TY - JOUR A1 - Steglich, Patrick A1 - Mai, Christian A1 - Villringer, Claus A1 - Mai, Andreas T1 - Direct observation and simultaneous use of linear and quadratic electro-optical effects JF - Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics N2 - We report on the direct observation and simultaneous use of the linear and quadratic electro-optical effect and propose a method by which higher-order susceptibilities of electro-optical materials can be determined. The evaluation is based on the separation of the second- and third-order susceptibilities and the experimental technique uses a slot waveguide ring resonator fabricated in integrated photonic circuit technology, which is embedded by a guest-host polymer system consisting of the azobenzene dye Disperse Red 1 in a poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix as an active electro-optical material. The contribution of both effects on the electro-optical response under the influence of static and time-varying electrical fields is investigated. We show that the quadratic electro-optical effect has a significant influence on the overall electro-optical response even with acentric molecular orientated molecules. Our findings have important implications for developing electro-optical devices based on polymer-filled slot waveguides and give rise to advanced photonic circuits. It analyses three German-language texts from the era of the Second World War: Egon Erwin Kisch’s travelogue Secret China (China geheim, 1933), Vicki Baum’s Hotel Shanghai (1939), and Alfred Döblin’s short expository text The Golden Gate (Das Goldene Tor, 1946). Despite the many variations in their portrayals of wars and crises, migrations and acculturations, breakdowns and new beginnings around the Pacific Ocean, all three authors evaluate the challenge posed by the transpacific triangle evolving around China, Japan, and the US to Europe’s self-postulated role as a leading continent. Nowadays, we are able to effectively couple redox centres within protein molecules to electrochemical transducers. This allows the transduction of a biochemical reaction into an electrode signal with applications mainly in sensing and bioenergetics [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8]. However, in most cases, this coupling is not direct, and shuttle molecules or side products of the reaction are used. But also for the direct coupling, significant progress has been made, and several enzymes and redox proteins can be addressed directly by electrodes [8,9,10,11,12,13]. The understanding of the functioning of developed systems is, however, in its infancy. Charge and electrostatic interactions have been mostly studied, and for small dipole molecules such as cytochrome c, the situation can be well described [14]. It is shown that low-pressure plasma treatment with hydrogen as process gas leads to a decrease in UV transmission of fused silica. This decrease can be directly attributed to oxygen vacancy-related defects and the presence of hydrogen within the silicon dioxide glass network. By the analysis of the plasma composition, it was observed that the amount of oxygen within the plasma increases with increasing treatment duration. Hence, oxygen was continuously released from glass network in the course of the plasma treatment. It was further observed that this release is strongly dependent on the applied plasma power where the lowest process efficiency occurs at the highest plasma power. It is shown that an increase in plasma power leads to a remarkable increase in light emission from the working gas, hydrogen. This observation indicates that the higher the degree of excitation and ionisation of the plasma, the lower the efficiency of plasma-induced formation of oxygen deficiency-related defects. This finding is of mentionable relevance for a better understanding of plasma-induced surface modification and coating processes. Conventionally, biomass is burned in combustors that use air as oxidizer. The need for efficiency and reduced emissions has led to development of clean combustion technologies such as oxy-fuel combustion. In oxy-fuel combustion technique, fuel is burnt in O2/CO2 environment instead of O2/N2 environment. In spite of biomass being used under oxy-fuel conditions using fixed bed furnaces, there is no detailed study of biomass combustion in fixed bed reactors under oxy-fuel condition. The studies only cover combustion under air-fuel condition. There is no report in the literature on important combustion parameters, viz., flame propagation speed, temperature profiles, ignition time, and species evolution in the fixed bed combustion under oxy-fuel conditions; the studies have been only in air. This work extends the research on biomass conversion to combustion under oxy-fuel conditions. To address these knowledge gaps, this PhD thesis focused on establishing and isolating the role of various CO2 effects on biomass combustion properties using a laboratory fixed bed reactor through experiments and numerical modeling. The fixed bed reactor used in this study was operated in counter-current flame propagation mode. Oxidizer was a mixture of pure O2 and N2 or CO2. Measurement were made for air-fuel condition, oxy-fuel condition of different O2/CO2 mixtures and various initial bed porosity. In this work, all numerical simulations were carried out using a commercial CFD software CD-Adapco (STAR CCM+ version 11.04). Euler-Lagrange (CFD-DEM) approach was used to model biomass conversion in a packed bed. Solid particles and their conversion were modeled using DEM while fluid phase was modeled as a continuous phase using CFD. Biomass conversion was modeled by four sub-models, namely, drying, pyrolysis, gas-phase reactions and char oxidation models. These models were adopted and improved from previous research on wood combustion. To account for oxy-fuel combustion environment, reaction involving CO2 which has been identified as the dominant reaction pathway as well as its associated chain-branching reactions were incorporated in homogeneous reaction sub-model. In order to separate effects of CO2 on wood combustion, four different mixtures of O2 and Ar/CO2/N2 were designed and simulated. Temperature in O2/CO2 combustion environment was adjusted to be equal to that of O2/N2 environment by adding an appropriate amount of Ar while O2 amount remained the same. The results showed that flame front propagation speed in oxy-fuel atmosphere reduced to 78% of that of the air-fuel condition with similar O2 concentration. The CFD-DEM model agreed very well with experimental values for mass loss, propagation speed and flame front positions. However, peak temperatures were poorly predicted at lower oxygen concentrations. The accuracy of temperature prediction improved at higher oxygen concentrations. It was noted that oxy-fuel peak temperature is lower than air-fuel temperature by about 200 K. For oxy-fuel combustion, peak temperature value and propagation speed increases as O2 concentration is increased. The results showed that at any given oxygen concentration, ignition time in oxy-fuel environment is almost twice that of corresponding air-fuel condition. It was established that the packing density affects combustion process by changing the burning conditions and limits. Furthermore, the study revealed that there is an optimum packing density, χ = 0.71, beyond which the efficiency falls due to the onset of quenching in the spaces. It was concluded that dilution effect is the most influential parameter on the burning rate of wood combustion in an oxy-fuel system. In a future study, the model prediction could be improved by including ash inhibition sub-model and using a full chemical kinetic mechanism for hydro-carbon combustion. It was also recommended that a detail analysis of heat transfer in the bed could be investigated in a future study. The findings from this work are important and may be useful when designing burners which operate under oxy-fuel combustion conditions. Flipping the orientation of arcs, we obtain a new class of valid inequalities, the flip inequalities, comprising both the known cycle and change-cycle inequalities. For a point of the LP relaxation, a violated flip inequality can be found in pseudo-polynomial time, and even in linear time for a spanning tree solution. Our main result is that the integer vertices of the polytope described by the flip inequalities are exactly the vertices of the PESP polytope, i.e., the convex hull of all feasible periodic slacks with corresponding modulo parameters. Moreover, we show that this flip polytope equals the PESP polytope in some special cases. It covers 8,596 km2, which is 15% of the total area of Togo. The regional capital Dapaong has about 100,000 inhabitants. The savannah region consists of 5 prefectures, 70 cantons, 1,073 villages and 451 hamlets. The number of inhabitants is growing rapidly. The population figures were 828,224 in 2010 and 890,403 in 2013, a growth rate of 8.2% in only 3 years. With 105 inhabitants per km2 the savannah region is more densely populated than German Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (69 inhabitants per km2). The savannah region is the poorest region in the country. In the villages, subsistence farming prevails. Surpluses are sold at village markets or nearby city markets with little profit, since raw products are rarely processed and certainly not processed and the purchasing power in the region is low. The sensitive savannah floors are overused. During the long dry season (October to May) there is a lack of artificial irrigation. The climate change affects the savannah region through shorter and irregular rainy seasons. Deforestation leads to further drying out of the soil. The population is increasing, becoming poorer and poorer and uses almost exclusively wood for cooking in the villages. This leads to further deterioration of the arable land. Harvest yields are falling because improved seeds and fertilisers are also lacking. The infrastructure in the region is at an extremely low level. There are no industrial enterprises in the savannah region. There is an almost complete lack of companies that process and refine agricultural products. There is a lack of storage facilities and cold chains for agricultural products. Only for wood and charcoal there are transport routes from the international highway to regions with better purchasing power. A major obstacle to the establishment of small businesses is the lack of electricity. The aim of this study is to find an appropriate power cycle and working fluid for a friction turbine application. Due to its low production costs, better scalability and low-maintenance requirements, a friction turbine, also known as Tesla turbine, shall be used. In order to find a proper working fluid and estimate the efficiency and power output,a numerical study was performed on five promising working fluids namely Xenon, Argon, Helium, Air and superheated Steam. The simulation model consists of three disks with a diameter of 0,25 m and an outlet diameter of 0,12 mm rotating at constant 10.000 rpm.It is tried to keep the Gap Reynolds number at a constant 73, to ensure a laminar flow regime between the disks. The outcome of the numerical study showed that all working fluids are suitable. The highest efficiency (shaft power / technical power) has been achieved with steam (96%) and a power output of 126 W/gap. The least efficiency with 89% has been realized with air and a Power output of 118 W/gap. The noble gases are in between these fluids. By comparing the simulation data and taken into account numerical and estimation errors, all five working fluids are at par. Thus, the choice of the working fluid and the power cycle is an economical. While a hot gas air turbine is not as efficient as the steam turbine, the invest and maintenance costs are lower due to less heat exchangers and necessaries like water reconditioningand a phase separator. This study takes place in the context of energy, environmental and sanitation challenges in the city of Sokodé. Indeed, we are witnessing more and more growing needs for butane gas, firewood or charcoal for cooking or lighting in the city of Sokodé as everywhere in other cities of the same size. Thus by the production of energy in situ, the condition of the populations will be able to improve significantly thanks to the recovery of sludge and fermentable fractions of solid waste into biogas. The objective of this work is to produce and recover methane from fermentable waste produced in the city of Sokodé. The methane or biogas recovered will be used as fuel to fuel kitchens in households. The resulting digestate will serve as an organic amendment to agricultural soils in the commune of Sokodé. Laboratory scale tests have been carried out to validate the value of co-digestion of sewage sludge with fermentable solid waste. The results obtained have shown that the methanogenic potential of sewage sludge is low compared to that of fermentable solid waste. The co-digestion of the two products allows a greater production of methane representing an energy gain compared to the methanisation of the sewage sludge alone. This study shows that waste (sludge from public septic tanks, waste from markets, hotels and fermentable households) can be considered an appreciable energy resource. Their Co-treatment would, while reducing the nuisance associated with this waste, produce valuable energy. In this paper, we focus on the linear Fresnel system, which it is probably the simplest CSP technology and presents the lowest investment costs. However, it is the less investigated CSP technology and several authors expect significant cost reduction of this technology. Therefore, deeper knowledge on the technology is required. We aim at investigating the coupling of a linear Fresnel system with various energy processes in order to bring out its interests for the Sahel region and, hence, provide sustainable energy services such as electricity generation for rural areas, cooling and refrigeration via sorption cold production, hot water or steam supply for semi-industrial or industrial processes. Materials and methods: The study was carried out on the basis of the otorhinolaryngological department of Kharkiv Regional Clinical Hospital in 2019-2020. It involved 100 patients of both sexes aged 20-59 years with chronic non-polyposis maxillary sinusitis. Results: The sizes of the uncinate process, the middle turbinate and the natural anastomosis were determined using the calculation of uncertainty. Basing on the data obtained, all the patients were divided into three groups. Conclusions: Changes in the size of the natural anastomosis (both an increase and its narrowing) lead to changes in pressure in the area of the anastomosis, and a decrease in ventilation in the paranasal sinuses. [version 1; peer review: 3 approved] T2 - F1000Research N2 - Today, academic researchers benefit from the changes driven by digital technologies and the enormous growth of knowledge and data, on globalisation, enlargement of the scientific community, and the linkage between different scientific communities and the society. To fully benefit from this development, however, information needs to be shared openly and transparently. Digitalisation plays a major role here because it permeates all areas of business, science and society and is one of the key drivers for innovation and international cooperation. To address the resulting opportunities, the EU promotes the development and use of collaborative ways to produce and share knowledge and data as early as possible in the research process, but also to appropriately secure results with the European strategy for Open Science (OS). It is now widely recognised that making research results more accessible to all societal actors contributes to more effective and efficient science; it also serves as a boost for innovation in the public and private sectors. However for research data to be findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable the use of standards is essential. At the metadata level, considerable efforts in standardisation have already been made (e.g. Data Management Plan and FAIR Principle etc.), whereas in context with the raw data these fundamental efforts are still fragmented and in some cases completely missing. The CHARME consortium, funded by the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Agency, has identified needs and gaps in the field of standardisation in the life sciences and also discussed potential hurdles for implementation of standards in current practice. Here, the authors suggest four measures in response to current challenges to ensure a high quality of life science research data and their re-usability for research and innovation. The temperature adjustment was conducted by means of the so-called contact method using thermocouples at two different surface conditions and two different materials: AISI 316L L-PBF bulk surface, AISI 316L powder surface, and IN718 powder surface. The apparent emissivity values for the particular setup were determined. For the first time, also corrected, closer to real emissivity values of the bulk or powder surface condition are published. In the temperature region from approximately 150 °C to 580 °C, the corrected emissivity was determined in a range from 0.2 to 0.25 for a 316L L-PBF bulk surface, in a range from 0.37 to 0.45 for 316L powder layer, and in a range from 0.37 to 0.4 for IN718 powder layer. The long-term accessibility of research data is, therefore, fundamental in the economy of the research production process. However, the availability of data is not sufficient by itself, but also their quality must be verifiable. Measures to ensure reuse and reproducibility need to include the entire research life cycle, from the experimental design to the generation of data, quality control, statistical analysis, interpretation, and validation of the results. Hence, high-quality records, particularly for providing a string of documents for the verifiable origin of data, are essential elements that can act as a certificate for potential users (customers). These records also improve the traceability and transparency of data and processes, therefore, improving the reliability of results. Standards for data acquisition, analysis, and documentation have been fostered in the last decade driven by grassroot initiatives of researchers and organizations such as the Research Data Alliance (RDA). Nevertheless, what is still largely missing in the life science academic research are agreed procedures for complex routine research workflows. Here, well-crafted documentation like standard operating procedures (SOPs) offer clear direction and instructions specifically designed to avoid deviations as an absolute necessity for reproducibility. Therefore, this paper provides a standardized workflow that explains step by step how to write an SOP to be used as a starting point for appropriate research documentation. While in Mediterranean parts of Europe the sand fly fauna is diverse, in Central European countries including Austria mainly Phlebotomus mascittii is found, an assumed but unproven vector of Leishmania infantum. To update the currently understudied sand fly distribution in Austria, a sand fly survey was performed and other entomological catches were screened for sand flies. Seven new trapping locations of Ph. mascittii are reported including the first record in Vienna, representing also one of the first findings of this species in a city. Morphological identification, supported by fluorescence microscopy, was confirmed by two molecular approaches, including sequencing and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) protein profiling. Sand fly occurrence and activity were evaluated based on surveyed locations, habitat requirements and climatic parameters. Moreover, a first comparison of European Ph. mascittii populations was made by two marker genes, cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI), and cytochrome b (cytb), as well as MALDI-TOF mass spectra. Our study provides new important records of Ph. mascittii in Austria and valuable data for prospective entomological surveys. MALDI-TOF MS protein profiling was shown to be a reliable tool for differentiation between sand fly species. Rising temperatures and globalization demand for regular entomological surveys to monitor changes in species distribution and composition. T1 - Estimation of the Global Solar Radiation Received on the Soil in Nalohou and Natitingou (Northern Benin) T2 - Conference Proceedings : 1st German-West African Conference on Sustainable, Renewable Energy Systems SusRes : 1st July 2020 - Kara, Togo N2 - The design of solar energy systems requires knowledge of the global solar radiation received by solar panels on the ground. However, for many developing countries such as the Benin Republic, there is a serious lack of radiometric stations everywhere in the country. The unavailability of these data, therefore, limits knowledge regarding the optimal functioning of solar installations. To cope with these difficulties, a method for estimating the global irradiation is developed at Nalohou AMMA CATCH station and Natintingou synoptic station, two sites in North-West Benin. This model depends on meteorological and astronomical parameters. Meteorological data such as sunshine duration, relative humidity, and air temperature have been collected on the synoptic station of Natitingou, and observed data of irradiation are collected from Nalohou. They are used to validate the model. The results show that the estimation of the mean square deviation value is around 10 -2 . Overall solar radiation is significant in this region and its annual average value varies between 9.80 kWh/m2 and 10.50 kWh/m2. This model can, therefore, be used by solar system operators to optimize energy production in the region. Here, we use cryo-electron microscopy and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) to characterize the transient binding of Cyt c6 to TePSI. The structure of TePSI cross-linked to Cyt c6 was solved at a resolution of 2.9 Å and shows additional cofactors as well as side chain density for 84% of the peptide chain of subunit PsaK, revealing a hydrophobic, membrane intrinsic loop that enables binding of associated proteins. Due to the poor binding specificity, Cyt c6 could not be localized with certainty in our cryo-EM analysis. SANS measurements confirm that Cyt c6 does not bind to TePSI at protein concentrations comparable to those for cross-linking. However, SANS data indicate a complex formation between TePSI and the non-native mitochondrial cytochrome from horse heart (Cyt cHH). Our study pinpoints the difficulty of identifying very small binding partners (less than 5% of the overall size) in EM structures when binding affinities are poor. We relate our results to well resolved co-structures with known binding affinities and recommend confirmatory methods for complexes with KM values higher than 20 μM. Minimally invasive liquid biopsies have the potential to improve their early screening efficiency as well as monitor prognosis by facilitating the diagnostic procedures. This review aims to assess the potential of using liquid biopsies of different kinds of biomarker species that have only been obtained from solid pituitary tissues so far. Numerous molecules have been associated with the development of a PitNET, suggesting that it often develops from the cumulative effects of many smaller genetic or epigenetic changes. These minor changes eventually pile up to switch critical molecules into tumor-promoting states, which may be the key regulatory nodes representing the most potent marker substances for a diagnostic test. Drugs targeting these nodes may be superior for the therapeutic outcome and therefore the identification of such pituitary-specific cellular key nodes will help to accelerate their application in medicine. The ongoing genetic degeneration in pituitary adenomas suggests that repeated tumor profiling via liquid biopsies will be necessary for personalized and effective treatment solutions. The aim of this master thesis is to improve the relevant workflow in the Library of the University of Applied Sciences Mittelhessen and to merge the processes in a unified system. For this purpose, the current status of the workflow is first examined and a market analysis is carried out. Subsequently, the necessary functional and non-functional requirements for an interaction system to be developed are determined in a requirements analysis. In the conception of the system, data modelling as well as graphical user interface and functionality are described and realized in the practical implementation in terms of programming. The result is the prototype of a system that integrates the transmission and processing of order requests within a web application and controls interaction and communication between users.
