TY - JOUR A1 - Krause, Antje A1 - Stoye, Jens A1 - Vingron, Martin T1 - Large scale hierarchical clustering of protein sequences JF - BMC Bioinformatics N2 - Background: Searching a biological sequence database with a query sequence looking for homologues has become a routine operation in computational biology. In spite of the high degree of sophistication of currently available search routines it is still virtually impossible to identify quickly and clearly a group of sequences that a given query sequence belongs to. Results: We report on our developments in grouping all known protein sequences hierarchically into superfamily and family clusters. Our graph-based algorithms take into account the topology of the sequence space induced by the data itself to construct a biologically meaningful partitioning. We have applied our clustering procedures to a non-redundant set of about 1,000,000 sequences resulting in a hierarchical clustering which is being made available for querying and browsing at http://systers.molgen.mpg.de/. Conclusions: Comparisons with other widely used clustering methods on various data sets show the abilities and strengths of our clustering methods in producing a biologically meaningful grouping of protein sequences. Few decades ago, it took a mail three weeks for it to cross the Atlantic. Nowadays with the use of e‐mail, the mail is there in a fraction of a second, traveling at the speed of light. Information exchange and communication is almost instant from all corners of the world, dramatically shrinking the boundaries and limitations of the past, to an extent that some have started to call the world a ‘global village’. The internet is the main driver of globalization, the integration of economic, political, cultural, religious, and social systems reaching the across world. This movement will only gain more momentum as more use people reach the web, and generation internet users approach work, learning and play in new ways. The internet has sweep across entire industries, and radically altered the way they do business. A good example is the book printing industry. In the past, printing a book was a risky proposition. Only a certain amount of books where printed. If they sold well, they quickly where out of stoke and if they didn’t sell the publisher was stuck with many copies of the same book. Nowadays the books are printed on demand, only after a customer has ordered a book via online. This reduces the fixed production cost almost to zero. As a result, far more people are able to print and sell there books than ever before, and customers have a wider pallet of products. An other good example is the entertainment business. In the past, a large budget, studios, actors among others things where required to shoot a movie. Nowadays anyone with a camcorder can film something and post it online, reaching an audience far grater that was previously possible. On the other hand, there are certain industries have not been changed dramatically by the internet revolution. One of these industries is education. “In many ways education has lagged behind some of these trends and is just beginning to feel their wake.” Terms as ‘e‐learning’ and ‘computer based training’ have been around for some time now, but where not able to find enough traction to have an impact on the landscape. But recently, the technology aspect as well as new pedagogic alternatives had caught up with e‐learning that have the potential of revolutionizing not only learning via the internet but learning as a whole. Since this market is still in the early stages, it is basically untapped. Organizations that take advantage of this an invest in e‐learning have the potential of being very successful. What is e‐learning? What benefits and disadvantages does it pose for the organization that wants start using this medium as a platform? What criteria is important when selecting the technology (LMS)? How should it be implemented? These questions are the backbone of this graduation thesis. They will be explained with a practical example, by implementing a LMS for a small American Company (E‐Hazwoper University), from start to finish. This document is divided into two parts: theoretical and practical segments. The theoretical segment starts with a general definition of what both E‐Learning and Learning Management System mean. Followed by discussion of the advantage, disadvantage and common misconceptions regarding e‐learning. Followed by a discussion talks about the 2.0 Generation, and how the landscape of the internet has been dramatically changing for the last few years. The last part of the theoretical segment provides a brief description of the general pedagogic philosophies that are relevant o the subject. The practical segment first discusses the Business Context. Here a general information about the host company is provided, followed by the project proposal. Next is the Design chapter, where detailed information about both the functional and technical requirements are defined and the different software alternaives are discussed and reviewed in order determine what alternative is better suited to meet all the business needs. Now with an alternative chosen, the Development phase follows. All required installation and addition configuration in order to have a functional service are described here. The last chapter is the Rollout, where the application itself is properly configured, tested and accommodated to the business standards. The receiver of that signal therefore has components which try to amplify the signal so that it can be processed optimally by a processor. In a mobile or portable environment the signal power level can vary strongly, because the position of the receiver to the transmitter is not fixed. In order to compensate that movement a control loop exists, which dynamically is adapting the front-end to the right level. This work describes a new, software-based way to handle the signal level control loop (formerly automatic gain control) in a digital TV receiver. Starting with a very basic introduction into digital communications, including the description of the traditional front-end architecture, followed by a detailed description of the new method. Finally some conclusions of this new method are made which are giving an idea about how in the future it might be possible to reach better receiving performances using this mechanism. To use the potentials of Blended learning a European wiki-based community called Methopedia will be established. By contributing to the development of Blended learning COMBLE supports ICT relevant methods that are indispensable for lifelong learning in Europe. Moreover, COMBLE will address to management-level, learners and trainers at the same time. We will develop a number of products - an applied reference model of Blended Learning, an expert course for trainers, and a European Blended Learning Driver’s Licence within the overall frame of the Methopedia. These products support the development of a community for best practices and the use of Blended Learning to be used in all educational contexts. Moreover, the quality of education and training in Europe will be enhanced by improving innovative Blended Learning concepts. COMBLE supports the successful implementation of Blended learning methods and strategies in the formal learning context of Vocational training, Continued Professional Development and Higher education systems. By working closely with application partners COMBLE develops practical, situated and innovative Blended Learning methods. Based on the concept of data flow diagrams (Yourdon 1989), processes and data flows are used. With the ability of a process to harness any amount of in- and outputs with different sources and destinations, it is possible to model any conceivable data processing problem. By aggregating a diagram as a new process, it becomes possible to outsource partial process chains to different abstraction levels. As a result, even very complex solutions can be modeled and explained in a clear way. The introduced uniform termination flow while traversing the graph creates a good readability, which also makes it possible to quickly detect weaknesses. Moreover, this solution is comprehensive and advances the cooperation in teams and development. With the use of predictive modelling, a more informed base for managerial decision making within soft HR performance management is offered. Design/methodology/approach The study builds on a dataset (n > 43 k) stemming from an annual employee MNC survey. It covers several soft HR performance drivers and outcomes (such as engagement, satisfaction and others) that either have evidence of a dual-role nature or non-linear relationships. This study applies the framework for artificial neural network analysis in organization research (Scarborough and Somers, 2006). Findings The analysis reveals a substantial artificial neural network model performance (R2 > 0.75) with an excellent fit statistic (nRMSE <0.10) and all drivers have the same relative importance (RMI [0.102; 0.125]). This predictive analysis revealed that the organization has to increase six of the drivers, keep two on the same level and decrease one. Originality/value Up to date, this study uses the largest dataset in soft HR performance management. Additionally, the predictive results reveal that specific target values lay below the current levels to achieve optimal performance. This study aims to analyze the deficiencies of privacy policies in terms of readability, vague statements, and the use of pacifying phrases concerning privacy. This represents the undertaking of a step forward in the literature on this topic through a comprehensive analysis encompassing both time and website coverage. It characterizes trends across website categories, top-level domains, and popularity ranks. Furthermore, studying the development in the context of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) offers insights into the impact of regulations on policy comprehensibility. The findings reveal a concerning trend: privacy policies have grown longer and more ambiguous, making it challenging for users to comprehend them. Notably, there is an increased proportion of vague statements, while clear statements have seen a decrease. Despite this, the study highlights a steady rise in the inclusion of reassuring statements aimed at alleviating readers’ privacy concerns. Moreover, due to ongoing advances in the field, earlier studies are far from reflecting the current situation due to the constant evolution of the field. The present research aims to evaluate and compare current solutions. Based on tweets on the airline service quality, we test the solutions of six vendors with different market power, such as Amazon, Google, IBM, Microsoft, and Lexalytics, and MeaningCloud, and report their measures of accuracy, precision, recall, (macro) F1, time performance, and service level agreements (SLA). For positive and neutral classifications, none of the solutions showed precision of over 70%. For negative classifications, all of them demonstrate high precision of around 90%, however, only IBM Watson NLU and Google Cloud Natural Language achieve recall of over 70% and thus can be seen as worth considering for application scenarios w here negative text detection is a major concern. Overall, our study shows that an independent, critical experimental analysis of sentiment analysis services can provide interesting insights into their general reliability and particular classification accuracy beyond marketing claims to critically compare solutions based on real-world data and analyze potential weaknesses and margins of error before making an investment.
