    <title language="eng">Silicon-On-Insulator Slot-Waveguide Design Trade-Offs</title>
Silicon-on-insulator slot-waveguide structures are designed and analysed numerically. We present our theoretical investigation of field confinement factors and effective nonlinear areas for different waveguide structures in order to find optimized geometrical dimensions. It is shown that a slot-waveguide with a height of 220 nm, a slot width of 180 nm and a silicon rail width of 180 nm provides a five times higher field confinement in the cladding region compared to conventional strip-waveguides which explains the high sensitivity of slotwaveguide based label-free bio-sensors.

    <title language="eng">Advanced Nanophotonics: Silicon-Organic Hybrid Technology</title>
Integrated photonic devices have gained increasing research interests. Especially silicon photonics have become very attractive for various optical applications. Using silicon-on-insulator as a material platform provides the ability to fabricate photonic devices with electronic devices on a single chip. Driven by substantial research investments, the integration of photonic devices on silicon-on-insulator substrates has reached a degree of maturity that already permits industrial adoption. However, silicon has the disadvantage of linear electro-optical effects, and, therefore, advanced modulation formats are difficult to realize when using silicon-based high-speed modulators. Hence, a new approach was proposed: the silicon-organic hybrid technology. This technology is a viable extension of the silicon-on-insulator material system for efficient high-speed modulation. We herewith present our theoretical and experimental investigations of the silicon-organic hybrid slot-waveguide ring resonator. The advanced device design is described in detail, which allows using both, the efficient silicon-on-insulator strip-waveguides and the silicon-organic hybrid slot-waveguides in single ring resonator. For the first time, we report the transmission spectra of such a resonator covered with an electro-optical polymer.

<title language="eng">XUV fluorescence as a probe of interatomic coulombic decay of resonantly excited He nanodroplets</title>
Superfluid He nanodroplets resonantly excited by extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses can relax via interatomic coulombic decay (ICD), generally considered an ultrafast process. Here, we introduce a novel approach to probe the dynamics of ICD in He nanodroplets over timescales ranging from femtoseconds to nanoseconds. Our method relies on detecting XUV fluorescence emitted from the nanodroplets as they are driven into a nanoplasma by subsequent intense infrared pulses. Nanoplasma ignition is facilitated by tunnel ionization of XUV-excited He∗ atoms attached to the droplets; it thus serves as a sensitive probe of their relaxation dynamics. The observed nanosecond-scale decay is attributed to ICD between pairs of He∗ atoms undergoing roaming motion on the droplet surface, as supported by quantum-mechanical and classical model calculations.

Development of an accelerator-based tunable THz source prototype for pump-probe experiments at the European XFEL is ongoing at the Photo Injector Test facility at DESY in Zeuthen (PITZ). The proof-of-principle experiments on the THz SASE FEL are performed utilizing the LCLS-I undulator installed in the PITZ beamline. The first lasing at a center wavelength of 100 µm was observed in the summer of 2022. The lasing of the narrowband THz source was achieved using an electron beam with an energy of ~17 MeV and a bunch charge up to several nC. Optimization of beam transport and matching resulted in the measurement of THz radiation with a pulse energy of tens of µJ, measured with pyroelectric detectors. The THz FEL gain curves were measured by means of specially designed short coils along the undulator. The results of the first characterization of the THz source at PITZ will be presented.

<title language="eng">Studies of ultrafast dynamics in substrate-free nanoparticles at ELI using Timepix3 optical camera</title>
We present a novel application of the Timepix3 optical camera (Tpx3Cam) for investigating ultrafast dynamics in substrate-free nanoparticles at the Extreme Light Infrastructure European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ELI ERIC). The camera, integrated into an ion imaging system based on a micro-channel plate (MCP) and a fast P47 scintillator, enables individual time-stamping of incoming ions with nanosecond timing precision and high spatial resolution. The detector successfully captured laser-induced ion events originating from free nanoparticles disintegrated by intense laser pulses. Owing to the broad size distribution of the nanoparticles (10-500 nm) and the variation in laser intensities within the interaction volume, the detected events range in occupancy from near-zero to extremely high, approaching the readout limits of the detector. By combining time-of-flight and velocity map imaging (VMI) techniques, detailed post-processing and analysis were performed. The results presented here focus on the performance of Tpx3Cam under high-occupancy conditions, which are of particular relevance to this study. These conditions approach the limitations imposed by the camera readout capabilities and challenge the effectiveness of standard post-processing algorithms. We investigated these limitations and associated trade-offs, and we present improved methods and algorithms designed to extract the most informative features from the data.

<title language="eng">Efficient nanosecond barium nitrate Raman laser for the visible spectral range</title>
We report on the design and performance of two solid-state Raman lasers, pumped by a frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm (8 ns FWHM, 10 Hz, up to 10 mJ), that generate either the first or second Stokes radiation with wavelengths of 563 nm and 598 nm. Barium nitrate crystals with a 1 cm² face area and lengths of 3 cm and 5 cm were used as the Raman-active medium in stable semi-spherical resonators. The Raman lasers produced first Stokes and second Stokes pulses, achieving pulse energies up to 2.3 mJ and conversion efficiencies up to 35% (first Stokes, 5 cm crystal) and 21% (second Stokes, 5 cm crystal). The output beams exhibit nearly Gaussian profiles with beam quality factors of M² = 1.67 and M² = 1.83, respectively. The proposed design and characterization demonstrated a Raman laser with high efficiency and superior beam quality. After subsequent frequency doubling, the output appears well dedicated for future differential absorption LiDAR (DIAL) applications.

<title language="eng">Optimization of local backside released micro-ring resonators for sensing applications using silicon photonic integrated circuits in a SOI technology</title>
Photonic micro-ring resonators (MRR) are widely studied for their high sensitivity across applications like environmental monitoring, healthcare, and chemical analysis. Their evanescent field sensing requires partially unembedded waveguides compatible with CMOS processing. Our approach uses local backside etching with an additional buried oxide (BOX) etch to release waveguides while preserving the back-end of line (BEOL) structure, enabling spatial separation of the sensing area and electronics. The BOX etch critically affects sensor performance, as waveguide surface roughness can alter MRR properties and coupling. We analyzed MRR design variations, comparing wet and dry etching techniques for their effects on optical performance across rib and strip waveguides in quasi-TE and quasi-TM modes. Wafer-level measurements show that backside-released MRR achieve high extinction ratios with slightly reduced quality factors, advancing high-sensitivity photonic sensors.

<title language="eng">Split-Aperture Xolography – Linear Volumetric Photoactivation with Short Axial Dimension and Low out of Focus Excitation</title>
Spatially confined photo-excitation with the lowest possible activation of the remaining volume is of central importance for high-resolution high-density optical data storage, fluorescence microscopy, 3D-lithography, and 3D-printing. Two-photon absorption (2PA) enables such applications yet leads to slow processing speed due to the underlying non-linear absorption process. Here, Split-Aperture Xolography (SAX), is introduced which uses stepwise excitation of dual-color responsive molecules to initiate a linear volumetric photo-reaction process that is up to several orders of magnitude more efficient than 2PA. The capabilities of SAX are investigated in a scenario study for focusing systems with high numerical aperture (NA) using a Python implementation of vectorial diffraction theory. The intersecting half-cones generated by the split illuminated entrance aperture of the objective reduce the axial focal spot size of the activation distribution by up to a factor of two compared to 2PA targeting the same electronic transition. A steep average decline of the activation probability with the fifth power away from focus is found for a wide range of directions. This is significantly better in comparison to 2PA and prevents that undesired out-of-focus excitation events sum-up with subsequent irradiations. This approach is expected to be advantageous for volumetric methods at the nanoscale.

    <title language="deu">Chip-integrierte photonische Bauelemente</title>
The focus on high-tech in our society makes optical data transmission increasingly important due to the continually growing diversity of information. At the very beginning of integrated photonics, the data rates achieved were only a few bit/s. Today, transfer rates of several Gbit/s are possible due to novel chip-integrated devices such as electro-optical modulators and switches. This trend was made possible due to new developments in the field of Chip-integrated photonics. In this article, we discuss latest developments in the field of chip-integrated photonic devices and describe their experimental characterization. The experimental setup is developed and described in detail. The example used in our experiments is a hybrid silicon-polymer material system. Our results show that the hybrid material approach is a promising candidate for future on-chip integrated photonic devices with low power consumption.
