Bandersnatch (2018) is an interactive film with a branching narrative structure and a protagonist who undergoes internal change – in several different ways. In this thesis, I examine the impact the branching of narrative paths has on the structure of the protagonist’s various character arcs. I identify five distinct choice types and five plotlines, four of which feature character change. Using an adapted version of Kristin Thompson’s (1999) analytical model, I then analyze one exemplary plotline’s plot structure, demonstrating certain structural anomalies. In the analysis of the different choice types’ impact on the character arcs, the concepts of the fatal flaw, lie the character believes, internal need and truth the character learns are used in tandem with the above model to track the progression of the plotlines’ arcs. I demonstrate the different choice types’ effects and highlight several issues that arise as well as interesting mitigation tactics used in the film.
