TY - THES A1 - Fischer, Anna T1 - Cultural Trauma and Reconciliation using the Example of the Australian Indigenous Population N2 - Unlike other nations, Australia’s colonial past did not went into healing in the mid-1960’s. Regardless to its conflicting past, the country attracts masses of tourists*, seasonal workers* and immigrants* and measures up to other global players. However, due to a predominant white gaze, the country itself is fragmented. As a result, it exhibits a significant imbalance of power and is therefore characterized through inequality. Based on colonial practices, major trauma has been inflicted on Australia’s Indigenous population* over centuries. These include the Stolen Generations as well as the annexation of the land. Due to over 200 years of colonization, the country is still dealing with the aftermath of trauma. In 2008, Aboriginal* and Torres Straits Islanders* belatedly received an official apology for the Stolen Generations. Both, the building of a nation as well as merging two contrasting traditions and worldviews with each other, present itself challenging. Attempts to achieve recovery and reconciliation in regards to the terrors of the past had been made. These include negotiations of the Native Title, action plans in education, an enhanced artistic representation as well as political compliance. Nowadays, support for victims* of trauma consists of traditional forms of therapy and counselling. Furthermore, modern concepts of therapy, which are more body- and emotion focussed are experiencing an increasing demand. Be it climate change, digitalization or the COVID-19 pandemic, our students need to learn how to work in an always changing environment, in interdisciplinary teams as well as in international contexts, to address these challenges. At the same time, learning spaces and educational environments have to transform and adapt to this new educational curriculum with innovative approaches. After two years of an ongoing exchange of ideas, we believe that LEARN[IN] is a rather small but good step in that direction. This E-book provides an overview of our DAAD-financed LEARN[IN] project in 2019–2020 that dealt with the “re-definition of learning spaces as a key factor of 21st century education.” LEARN[IN] is a DAAD-financed project within the research programme “Hochschuldialog mit Sudeuropa” (Higher Education Dialogue with Southern Europe). The project “LEARN[IN]” is conducted by SRH University Heidelberg/Germany, Universita degli studi Firenze/Italy and Universidade do Minho/Portugal. However, Europe is lagging behind the US economy, where startup ecosystems are thriving for decades, such as the Silicon Valley. One reason for that is that Europe comprises of many small markets, each with different legislation and language, which creates barriers for local startups to scale fast. The European startup ecosystem is very fragmented and in order to be competitive on the global markets, collaboration between different startup cities is necessary to develop. The purpose of this study is to explore the collaboration between the two tech startup ecosystems in Berlin (Germany) and Sofia (Bulgaria). The approach is to measure and analyse the current collaboration of entrepreneurs and investors from both ecosystems by collecting quantitative data about their collaboration behaviour. Data is collected via an online survey among participants from both ecosystems. Then, the data is used to identify which pairs of actors are most likely to become the catalysts of collaboration in the next 5 years. Based on that, three alternative scenarios for the future collaboration between Berlin and Sofia are designed. Scenario 1 assumes the collaboration between entrepreneurs from both ecosystems will grow fast and stimulate the collaboration between other actors from Berlin and Sofia. Scenario 2 identifies there is an established collaborative relationship between investors from Berlin and investors from Sofia. Based on that, the prediction is that in the long term many co-investments will occur, and this will generally encourage other actors from the two cities to collaborate. Scenario 3 is based on the assumption that Sofia will position itself as a seed-stage startup hub. The low cost of living and low competition for seed capital can eventually attract Berlin entrepreneurs to collaborate more with Sofia investors. ER - TY - THES A1 - Runge, Saeden Liam T1 - “Sorry Mate, Wrong Path”: The Impact of a Branching Narrative Structure on the Protagonist’s Character Arc in the Interactive Film Bandersnatch N2 - Bandersnatch (2018) is an interactive film with a branching narrative structure and a protagonist who undergoes internal change – in several different ways. In this thesis, I examine the impact the branching of narrative paths has on the structure of the protagonist’s various character arcs. I identify five distinct choice types and five plotlines, four of which feature character change. Using an adapted version of Kristin Thompson’s (1999) analytical model, I then analyze one exemplary plotline’s plot structure, demonstrating certain structural anomalies. In the analysis of the different choice types’ impact on the character arcs, the concepts of the fatal flaw, lie the character believes, internal need and truth the character learns are used in tandem with the above model to track the progression of the plotlines’ arcs. I demonstrate the different choice types’ effects and highlight several issues that arise as well as interesting mitigation tactics used in the film. A content analysis of body positive accounts on Instagram N2 - In the last few years, the body-positive movement, which challenges unrealistic beauty standards by promoting self-love and acceptance towards diverse bodies, has grown in popularity specifically on Instagram. This has generated mixed resonance about the movement. The present study aimed at understanding the criticism of body positivity being co-opted by corporations and reinforcing beauty ideals by examining body positive messages and their impact. This thesis provides a content analysis of 150 Instagram posts of 15 body positive influencers on Instagram while focusing on commercialistic aspects and follower interaction. The results showed that body positive content usually depicted broad ranges of body sizes but focused less on communicating positive body image themes. It was found that commercialism is majorly integrated into the accounts and follower interaction is higher if the individual showed more skin or self-objectified poses. In the theory work, a study was done on the state of the art of LIB recycling processes. Additionally, the role of LIB recycling industries on cathode material recycling, economic state, and price evolution of the cathode material was discussed. In the experiment part, an investigation was done to recover cobalt and lithium from the model solutions. The model solution was prepared similar to wastewater from LIB recycling process that contains Li+ and Co2+ ions. Cobalt was recovered by electrochemical techniques from that solution. The experiment was performed at different pH values of the model solution. According to X-ray fluorescence, the percentage of deposited cobalt at pH 0.95, 1.90, 2.45, 3.85, 4.65, and 5.90 was 21.31%, 97.40%, 96.80%, 92.60%, 94.36%, and 90.47% respectively. The percentage recovery of cobalt was higher at the lowest pH value. T1 - What Makes Prosecutors Independent? - Analyzing the Determinants of the Independence of Prosecutors JF - Journal of Institutional Economics N2 - The prosecution of criminal suspects is an integral part of a country's justice system. While substantial scholarly attention has been devoted to the study of the police and judges and their relevance to the rule of law, surprisingly little is known about prosecutors. The aim of this paper is to contribute towards filling this knowledge gap. We first demonstrate the rising importance of prosecutors for criminal justice systems around the world. We identify the independence of prosecution agencies from the other two branches of government as a centrally important characteristic and then proceed to analyze the determinants of de facto prosecutorial independence from a political economy perspective. We find that press freedom, the immunity of parliamentarians and belonging to the common law tradition are positively associated with higher de facto independence.
