(2025)
Preface
The 1st INSECTSPLUS 2025 International Congress is jointly organised by the DIL
Deutsches Institut für Lebensmitteltechnik e. V. (DIL e. V.) and the Leibniz-Institut für
Agrartechnik und Bioökonomie e. V. (ATB) on May 12, 13, and 14, 2025 in
Cloppenburg, Germany. The INSECTSPLUS 2025 International Congress represents a
pioneering effort to advance the cultivation and processing of alternative biomass for
food, feed, and specialised applications. As the world handles the need for sustainable
food systems, alternative proteins have emerged as a crucial solution, bridging the gap
between research, industry, and policymaking. This inaugural congress is a premier
global platform, nurturing interdisciplinary collaboration among scientists, industry
leaders, investors, and technology providers dedicated to innovating within the
alternative protein sector.
The INSECTSPLUS 2025 Abstract Book encapsulates cutting-edge research,
technological advancements, and forward-thinking discussions at the congress. Within
these pages, readers will find insights spanning the entire alternative biomass value
cycle, including research on insect bioconversion, microbial dynamics, breeding,
nutrition, biorefinery innovations, sustainable processing technologies, and
applications of alternative proteins in food and feed. The breadth of topics highlights
the congress's commitment to a universal, integrated approach to alternative protein
development.
This congress would not have been possible without the dedication and contributions
of our esteemed authors, the members of the International Scientific Committee, the
organising team, sponsors, exhibitors, and partners. Their unwavering commitment to
advancing the field of alternative proteins has played a fundamental role in shaping the
programme and ensuring a rich exchange of knowledge and innovation. We extend
our heartfelt gratitude to all participants for their invaluable input and engagement.
As we navigate the challenges of global food security and environmental sustainability,
we hope that the knowledge shared at the INSECTSPLUS 2025 International Congress
will catalyse further research, technological breakthroughs, and sustainable business
practices in the alternative protein space. We invite you to explore the abstracts
compiled in this volume, engage in discussions, and contribute to shaping the future of
sustainable protein production.
We look forward to a successful congress and the collaborative progress it will inspire.

Food loss and waste, hunger and obesity are still of high importance as
indicated by recent publications, e.g. Nature Food
(https://doi.org/10.1038/s43016-024-01041-7) and The Lancet
(https://doi.org/10.1016/S0140-6736(23)02750-2). From a holistic
perspective, new nutritional concepts should include a physiologically
balanced, mainly plant-based diet, novel alternative food resources and
innovative technologies. In this context, nonthermal processing methods
offer an opportunity to imagine new pathways for the processing of
conventional and alternative food resources. Thus, the capabilities of
already established processes such as high pressure processing (HPP),
pulsed electric fields (PEF) treatment, the use of ultraviolet (UV) light and
various radiation sources, along with less explored processes such as
ultrasound (US) and cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAPP), must all
be taken into account. Additionally, the combination of electrical and
thermal processes (e.g. ohmic heating and PEF-assisted drying) as well as
nonthermal and thermal techniques (e.g. high pressure freezing, and high
pressure thermal sterilization) can also bring benefits.
The “2024 EFFoST/IFT-NPD WORKSHOP ON NONTHERMAL
PROCESSING OF FOODS” is organized for the first time by the Leibniz-
Institut für Agrartechnik und Bioökonomie e.V. (ATB) in the Center for
Research and Communication in a Circular BioEconomy (CIRCLE)
between October 7-9, 2024. The workshop is organized through a
collaboration between EFFoST, the European Federation of Food Science
and Technology, and the Nonthermal Processing Division of IFT, the
Institute of Food Technologists. The workshop provides an overview of the
state-of-the-art developments in nonthermal processing of food materials
and aims to emphasize both the diversity of the processes and the products
to be treated, and also the resilience and sustainability of various
applications that can deliver the best possible holistic food concepts. This
is encompassed in the theme of the workshop, “Nonthermal processes to
foster diversity, sustainability and resilience of future food systems”. This
publication contains the abstracts of all oral and poster presentations at this
event.
Within the workshop, we will offer a special platform for intensive and
trustful professional exchange between newcomers and experts in the field,
between academia and industry. We have compiled a broad scientific
program consisting of five central workshop themes: i) Applications of high
pressure processing, ii) Applications of pulsed electric fields, iii)
Applications of ultrasound and sonication processes, iv) Applications of
cold plasma, v) Sustainability aspects, and vi) Success stories of
innovations in food processing. In total, the workshop has attracted 55
presentations from 11 countries and 5 continents. During the three days of
the workshop, 8 short course lectures and 33 oral presentations will be
delivered in seven plenary sessions. Additionally, 14 posters and 3
company stands will be displayed for further discussion and scientific
exchange. The COST Action (CA19110) on Plasma Applications for Smart
and Sustainable Agriculture – PlAgri will also be considered during the
workshop. Finally, as the chairpersons of the workshop, we would like to
express our sincere gratitude to the authors, members of the scientific
committee, sponsors and supporters for their valuable contribution.

INSECTA 2023
(2023)
INSECTA 2023 conference is organized on September 13 and 14, 2023 in Magdeburg by Pilot Pflanzenöltechnologie Magdeburg e.V. (PPM) and Leibniz-Institut für Agrartechnik und Bioökonomie e.V. (ATB). In 2015, PPM initiated the first national INSECTA in Magdeburg and since 2016 the INSECTA was jointly organized by PPM and ATB. The annual conference addresses national and international experts from both academia and industry. Our aim is to continue the success of recent congresses and ensure that INSECTA remains the leading insect science and technology conference for attendees and ensures interdisciplinary collaboration.
It has been impressive to see the rapid growth of the insect industry over the past few years. Not only have business sizes increased, but new branches have also joined the existing ones and we are looking forward to welcoming all. New topics have also been introduced to basic and industrial research: allergens and food safety, health benefits, use of artificial intelligence, exploitation of further side streams and many more.
The world, climate and politics are changing fast, as are food habits. New sources for the production of consumer goods are needed in all aspects of life. Developing the insect industry and preparing it for the challenges of the next year will be important parts of our future. For this, we will get together at the conference, where we will learn during the lectures, converse during the breaks, and make new connections at the evening event.

- 325 n.e., a trzecie wraz z imigracją plemion słowiańskich w VI wieku n.e. (JAKUPI 2007).
(odpowiada to 9,3 metra, tzw. miara królewska).
