Analysis of M/G/1-queues with Setup Times and Vacations under Six Different Service Disciplines
(2001)
Single server M/G/1-queues with an infinite buffer are studied; these permit inclusion of server vacations and setup times. A service discipline determines the numbers of customers served in one cycle, that is, the time span between two vacation endings. Six service disciplines are investigated: the gated, limited, binomial, exhaustive, decrementing, and Bernoulli service disciplines. The performance of the system depends on three essential measures: the customer waiting time, the queue length, and the cycle duration. For each of the six service disciplines the distribution as well as the first and second moment of these three performance measures are computed. The results permit a detailed discussion of how the expected value of the performance measures depends on the arrival rate, the customer service time, the vacation time, and the setup time. Moreover, the six service disciplines are compared with respect to the first moments of the performance measures.
In this contribution a method for the prediction of the radiated sound out of the velocity field of a vibrating ceiling is presented. The numerical method was validated via measurements on a real structure using a pp-probe. It is based on Integral Transform techniques and can be applied in the postprocessing of a FEM simulation
(harmonic analysis) [1]. The method was verified by measurements on the real structure and can be used for parametrical studies.
Rounding off the Parts 1 and 2 of this publication nomograms, based on dimensionless parameters, can be developed to predict the sound radiation of light weight slabs. Hereby different sets of geometry as well as different configurations of ceilings can be studied in order to describe the acoustical and dynamical behaviour of wooden ceilings.
This paper concerns the development and validation of Finite Element Methods (FEM) to simulate the dynamic response of a dowelled-joist timber floor. This is a solid floor comprised of timber joists connected using timber dowels with individual assemblies connected using inclined metal screws. The focus is on the structural dynamics in the low-frequency range up to 200 Hz which is the relevant range for impact sound insulation and vibration serviceability. Dowel connections between the joists that formed each assembly were modelled using either rigid or spring connectors in the FEM models. The validation against experimental modal analysis showed that both approaches were valid in terms of the eigenfrequencies, Modal Assurance Criterion (MAC) and the spatial-average velocity with point excitation. Whilst the FEM model with spring connectors had a higher number of correlated modes in the MAC analysis, this required removal of many spurious modes before predicting the response. The validated models were used to demonstrate the potential in predicting assessment parameters for vibration serviceability that are contained in EN 1995-1-1 (Eurocode 5). This predictive approach to the evaluation of vibration serviceability has the advantage in that it can be used for non-standard timber floors with non-standard boundary conditions or floor plans.
Correlations between standardised and real impact sound sources in lightweight wooden structures
(2021)
This study aimed to understand the correlation between standard impact sound sources and real impact sources in lightweight floor structures. Six real impact sources (adult walking, child running, child jumping on the floor, and three objects falling) were used to be compared with standard impact sources (i.e. tapping machine and impact ball). Measurements were conducted on a lightweight timber joist floor. Impact sound pressure levels (SPLs) produced by the standard impact sources were measured on the four floor structures with or without carpet tiles. For the real impact sources, two walkers wearing socks and slippers walked at different speeds (normal and fast) along three paths, while two children ran along the three paths and jumped at four positions. Also, the SPLs generated by dropped objects were measured at five positions. Seven standardised single-number quantities (SNQs) were calculated for the tapping machine and the impact ball, while three noise ratings (LAeq, LAFmax, and LN) were also computed from the sound recordings of the real impact sources. Both the tapping machine and the impact ball showed similar frequency characteristics with the real impact sources across all the floor structures. All the SNQs for the tapping machine and the impact ball were highly correlated with the energy-based noise ratings of the adult walking and little differences were found across walking speeds and footwear. Similar tendencies were observed from other real impact sources, indicating the high correlations between the standardised SNQs of the tapping machine and the impact ball and the noise ratings.
The total structure-borne sound power of an installed machine is a function of the source activity and mobility, and the receiver mobility, at each contact and for each component of excitation. The data and computational requirements for prediction therefore are large. Manufacturers view their products as single entities and desire corresponding single values of source strength. A laboratory reception plate measurement procedure has been proposed which yields single equivalent values of source strength and source mobility. The source data, in combination with an estimate of the single equivalent value of receiver mobility, yields the approximate total installed power. The accuracy of the estimate is dependent on the spatial variation in contact conditions over the connections. In addition, phase information has been lost in the simplification. Case studies are described for multiple contact sources on a non-homogeneous plate (a timber-joist floor) where the approximate estimates of structure-borne power are compared with exact values obtained from full mobility formulations.
A practical method is proposed for predicting the total structure-borne sound transmission from machines installed in lightweight buildings. The total structure-borne sound power is a function of the source activity and mobility, and the receiver mobility, at each contact and for each component of excitation. The data and computational requirements for prediction normally are large and are required to be in complex form for the cases where source mobility and receiver mobility are of the same magnitude. This can occur in lightweight framed buildings. However, manufacturers view their products as single entities and desire corresponding single values of source strength. They also desire simple measurement methods
and the data obtained to be in octave or one-third octaves. A laboratory reception plate measurement procedure has been proposed which yields single equivalent values of source strength and source mobility. The source data, in combination with an estimate of the single equivalent value of receiver mobility, yields a simple prediction of the total installed power. The accuracy of the simple prediction depends on the spatial variation in contact conditions. For example, the receiver mobility over a joist is likely to be significantly lower than for positions between joists. Case studies are described for multiple contact sources on a timber-joist floor where the simple predictions are compared with exact values obtained from a full mobility formulation.
This paper aims to provide a practical approach to the prediction of structure-borne sound power of mechanical installations in buildings. For structure-borne power, two source quantities, activity and mobility, are required, in combination with one receiver quantity, the receiver mobility. The source activity, in the form of free velocity or blocked force, is usually measured. For source mobility and receiver mobility, estimates, based on simple expressions, can provide a useful starting point. Also, machine bases may be categorised as: compact, plate-like, flanged or framed. Receiver structures, floors and walls, may be categorised as: plate-like, ribbed plate or framed plate. The estimates of source mobility are based on the rigid body value, the characteristic plate mobility and the fundamental plate frequency. For ribbed and framed plate structures, the mobility will vary with location, but again simple estimates of mobility, based on characteristic values and distance from the ribs, are possible.
In March 2019, German-speaking scientists and scholars calling themselves Scientists for Future, published a statement in support of the youth protesters in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (Fridays for Future, Klimastreik/Climate Strike), verifying the scientific evidence that the youth protestors refer to. In this article, they provide the full text of the statement, including the list of supporting facts (in both English and German) as well as an analysis of the results and impacts of the statement. Furthermore, they reflect on the challenges for scientists and scholars who feel a dual responsibility: on the one hand, to remain independent and politically neutral, and, on the other hand, to inform and warn societies of the dangers that lie ahead.
Knowing about the presence and number of people in a room can be of interest for precise control of heating, ventilation and air conditioning. To determine the number and presence of occupants cost-effectively, it is of interest to use already existing air condition sensors (temperature, humidity, CO2) of the building automation system. Different approaches and methods for determining presence have attracted attention in recent years. We propose an occupancy detection method based on a method of supervised machine learning. In an experiment, measurement data were recorded in a research apartment with controllable boundary conditions. The presence of people was simulated by artificial injection of water vapour, CO2 and heat dissipation. The variation of the number of artificial users, the duration of presence and the supply air volume flow of the ventilation resulted in a total of 720 combinations. By using artificial users, the boundary conditions were accurately defined, and different presence situations could be measured time-effectively. The data is evaluated with a method of supervised machine learning called random forest. The statistical model can determine precisely the number of people in over 93% of the cases in a disjoint test sample. The experiments took part in the Rosenheim Technical University of Applied Sciences laboratory.

Bevor Sie
bewährte Konstruktionen ändern, sollten Sie die wichtigsten schalltech-
nischen Gesetze beachten (Kapitel 4).
56 dB => 53 d13 => 46 d13?
I
m Kap. 8 wird gezeigt, daß mit Decken-
Mehrkosten von nur ca. 25 % bereits
Verbesserungen von ca. 10 dB möglich sind.
Hinweise auf neue Entwicklungen und
Alternativen werden in den nachfolgend
genannten Kapiteln gegeben
zu den Unterdecken - siehe Kap. 6.3 zur
Rohdeckenbeschwerung - siehe Kap. 6.4

Wooden building systems, including cross-laminated timber elements, are becoming more common. The last few years have seen new developments and documentation of innovative types of cross-laminated timber floor assemblies. Regarding impact sound associated to walking persons, running or jumping children, such floor assemblies can be regarded as a weak part. So far, there are no reliable standardized calculation models available, for prediction of impact sound in the entire frequency range. Therefore the design is always based upon previous experiences and available measurements. This article presents the results of a number of well controlled sound insulation measurements of cross-laminated timber/massive wood floor constructions conducted in laboratories. The collection of data and results analysis highlight some basic phenomena. For instance, how structural differences related to the grouping of the constructions change the frequency distribution of the impact sound level and the single number quantities. Another significant result is the influence of the dynamic stiffness of the resilient interlayer of floating floor systems and the mass per unit area of the floors. Based on this analysis, the aim is to identify similarities and carry out simplifications. The data will be further processed and used in the development of prediction models and optimization process of cross-laminated timber floor assemblies.
This paper investigates the prediction of low-frequency impact sound insulation for a solid timber floor formed from dowel-connected joists with Swiss hardwood.
A finite element model was developed for the dynamic response of the floor as it is neither homogeneous nor isotropic and has complex connections.
With point force excitation, a FEM model for the dynamic response of the floor was validated using experimental modal analysis in the laboratory.
Two different FEM models were developed, one using spring connectors and the other using join connectors. Good agreement between FEM and measurements in terms of the Modal Assurance Criterion (MAC) and eigenfrequencies was achieved for the first 14 modes with the spring connector model and for the first 7 modes with the join connector model.
However, for the vibroacoustic analysis it was necessary to use the join connector model due to the computational instabilities of the spring model above 100 Hz when it was coupled to the acoustic medium.
With mechanical excitation the radiated sound power from the underside of the timber floor was measured with sound intensity in order to calculate the radiation efficiency. Comparison of measurements and FEM showed reasonable agreement between 20Hz and 200Hz

Outdoor or just on site analyzes of photovoltaic modules can offer some advantages in comparison to indoor Lab stud-ies. In this way the electrical performance is monitored and logged under natural operating conditions in full range of irradiation and temperature. The entirety of monitored IV data allows deriving low-light characteristics of electric parameters, temperature coefficients and root cause analysis for possible degradation. We apply so-called self-reference algorithm in order to increase the accuracy of analysis. The improved precision is due to application of effective acting irradiation and effective temperature instead of externally measured data. Effective irradiation is determined in self-referencing scheme: the short circuit current of the module is assigned to the irradiation.
Outdoor performance analyses of photovoltaic modules can be advantageous compared to indoor investigations, as they take into account the influences of natural test conditions on the modules. However, such outdoor performance assessments usually suffer from poor accuracies due to undefined test conditions for the modules. This paper reports on a comprehensive concept for improved outdoor analysis which results in performance data with indoor laboratory precision. The approach delivers current-voltage characteristics for even more test conditions than required by the standard IEC 61853-1. Hence, curves of modules’ electrical parameters above irradiance can be deduced for any temperatures. The concept allows precise determination of temperature coefficients for user-defined irradiances taking into account outdoor effects like light-soaking or light-induced degradation. The calibration and measurement uncertainty of the presented outdoor analysis method is evaluated quantitatively. For the measurements an advanced outdoor set-up was used.
Varying thermal stresses influence significantly the time to failure of electric components as used, for instance, in automotive devices. For applications as autonomous driving a high reliability has to be guaranteed.
In this article we discuss how to combine probability distributions for failure. Discrete and continuous changes of the probability distribution in time are both considered. It turns out that the temporal order of the distributions, corresponding to the succession of stresses in applications, is essential.
The latter observation restricts the general applicability of the widely used temperature collectives where only the total time of a temperature stress is considered neglecting the order of the stresses.
An application of our results are thermal overstress tests on electric components. We may explain yet not well understood measurements for automotive electric cables.
Background
Joint contractures in frail older people are associated with serious restrictions in participation. We developed the Participation Enabling CAre in Nursing (PECAN) intervention, a complex intervention to enable nurses to promote participation in nursing home residents with joint contractures. The aim of this study was to examine the feasibility of the implementation strategy and to identify enablers and barriers for a successful implementation.
Methods
The implementation of PECAN was investigated in a 6-month pilot cluster-randomised controlled trial (c-RCT). As a key component of the implementation strategy, nominated nurses were trained as facilitators in a one-day workshop and supported by peer-mentoring (visit, telephone counselling). A mixed-methods approach was conducted in conjunction with the pilot trial and guided by a framework for process evaluations of c-RCTs. Data were collected using standardised questionnaires (nursing staff), documentation forms, problem-centred qualitative interviews (facilitators, therapists, social workers, relatives, peer-mentors), and a group discussion (facilitators). A set of predefined criteria on the nursing home level was examined. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics. Qualitative data were analysed using directed content analysis.
Results
Seven nursing homes (n = 4 intervention groups, n = 3 control groups) in two regions of Germany took part in the study. Facilitators responded well to the qualification measures (workshop participation: 14/14; workshop rating: “good”; peer-mentor visit participation: 10/14). The usage of peer-mentoring via telephone varied (one to seven contacts per nursing home). Our implementation strategy was not successful in connection with supplying the intervention to all the nurses. The clear commitment of the entire nursing home and the respect for the expertise of different healthcare professionals were emphasised as enablers, whereas a lack of impact on organisational conditions and routines and a lack of time and staff competence were mentioned as barriers.
Conclusion
The PECAN intervention was delivered as planned to the facilitators but was unable to produce comprehensive changes in the nursing homes and subsequently for the residents. Strategies to systematically include the management and the nursing team from the beginning are needed to support the facilitators during implementation in the main trial.

In order to set up guidelines for the design of light-weighted ceilings for timber constructions to be used by engineers in practice, investigations based on both measurements and numerical models have been carried out [1, 2, 3].
The setup and the calibration of the numerical model of the structure are outlined briefly.
A semi-analytical approach for the prediction of radiated sound is presented, which is based on Integral Transform Methods. The method can be applied in the post processing of a Finite Element computation.
Thus as a first step the structure, consisting of a timber slab, a floating floor and a suspended ceiling, is built up in a Finite Element model, where the material properties of wood and the characteristics of the system are considered.
The model is parameterized in order to enable computations with varying geometry and material parameters and calibrated with the help of measurements using model updating techniques.
The velocity pattern resulting out of the FEM computation is transformed from the spatial into the wavenumber domain and from the time into the frequency domain using Fourier Transform Methods. Applying this velocity pattern as a boundary condition to the Helmholtz Equation, which results out of the Fourier Transform of the wave equation, the wavenumbers, which fulfil the radiation condition, can be selected and the pressure field in the adjacent acoustic fluid can be computed.
Due to the properties of the Fourier-Transform the radiated sound power can be calculated efficiently in the transformed domain out of pressure and velocity.
In a second part of the contribution the model for the air cushion in the suspended ceiling is discussed, where a FSI-model for the acoustic fluid and the structure is compared against engineering approaches using simplifications concerning mass distribution and transfer impedances between the individual nodes at the interface
