The fluorescence decay time allows to identify and distinguish polymers from each other. Three differently treated biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate films are examined with two excitation wavelengths of 445 and 488nm. The fluorescence decay time is dependent of the treatment method of the films and is a means for identification.
The effectiveness of hot-melt coating depends on its uniformity and the extent to which the surface is completely covered. Compared with solvent-based coating, spreading is more limited in hot-melt coating; thus, the coating uniformity is more affected by the process parameters. This study presents a new method for identifying and quantifying factors influencing coating uniformity. The proposed method facilitates the determination of coating-thickness distribution and non-covered surface proportion based on micro-computed tomography measurements. The proposed method is based on particles that have undergone hot-melt coating in a fluidized bed, and it is compared to common methods for layer-thickness determination. The influencing factors are quantified in terms of the dependency of coating uniformity on the coating amount and material. Material properties have a significant impact because stearin and palm fat create different coating layers. The proposed method is confirmed to be well suited for analyzing coating qualities.
Real-world domestic electricity demand datasets are the key enabler for developing and evaluating machine learning algorithms that facilitate the analysis of demand attribution and usage behavior. Breaking down the electricity demand of domestic households is seen as the key technology for intelligent smart-grid management systems that seek an equilibrium of electricity supply and demand. For the purpose of comparable research, we publish DEDDIAG, a domestic electricity demand dataset of individual appliances in Germany. The dataset contains recordings of 15 homes over a period of up to 3.5 years, wherein total 50 appliances have been recorded at a frequency of 1 Hz. Recorded appliances are of significance for load-shifting purposes such as dishwashers, washing machines and refrigerators. One home also includes three-phase mains readings that can be used for disaggregation tasks. Additionally, DEDDIAG contains manual ground truth event annotations for 14 appliances, that provide precise start and stop timestamps. Such annotations have not been published for any long-term electricity dataset we are aware of.
Parameter free Non-intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) algorithms are a major step toward real-world NILM scenarios. The identification of appliances is the key element in NILM. The task consists of identification of the appliance category and its current state. In this paper, we present a param- eter free appliance identification algorithm for NILM using a 2D representation of time series known as unthresholded Recurrence Plots (RP) for appliance category identification. One cycle of voltage and current (V-I trajectory) are transformed into a RP and classified using a Spacial Pyramid Pooling Convolutional Neural Network architecture. The performance of our approach is evaluated on the three public datasets COOLL, PLAID and WHITEDv1.1 and compared to previous publications. We show that compared to other approaches using our architecture no initial parameters have to be manually tuned for each specific dataset.
Meeting ecological and water quality standards in lotic ecosystems is often failed due to multiple stressors. However, disentangling stressor effects and identifying relevant stressor-effect-relationships in complex environmental settings remain major challenges. By combining state-of-the-art methods from ecotoxicology and aquatic ecosystem analysis, we aimed here to disentangle the effects of multiple chemical and non-chemical stressors along a longitudinal land use gradient in a third-order river in Germany. We distinguished and evaluated four dominant stressor categories along this gradient: (1) Hydromorphological alterations: Flow diversity and substrate diversity correlated with the EU-Water Framework Directive based indicators for the quality element macroinvertebrates, which deteriorated at the transition from near-natural reference sites to urban sites. (2) Elevated nutrient levels and eutrophication: Low to moderate nutrient concentrations together with complete canopy cover at the reference sites correlated with low densities of benthic algae (biofilms). We found no more systematic relation of algal density with nutrient concentrations at the downstream sites, suggesting that limiting concentrations are exceeded already at moderate nutrient concentrations and reduced shading by riparian vegetation. (3) Elevated organic matter levels: Wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) and stormwater drainage systems were the primary sources of bioavailable dissolved organic carbon. Consequently, planktonic bacterial production and especially extracellular enzyme activity increased downstream of those effluents showing local peaks. (4) Micropollutants and toxicity-related stress: WWTPs were the predominant source of toxic stress, resulting in a rapid increase of the toxicity for invertebrates and algae with only one order of magnitude below the acute toxic levels. This toxicity correlates negatively with the contribution of invertebrate species being sensitive towards pesticides (SPEARpesticides index), probably contributing to the loss of biodiversity recorded in response to WWTP effluents. Our longitudinal approach highlights the potential of coordinated community efforts in supplementing established monitoring methods to tackle the complex phenomenon of multiple stress.
Teachers should be able to balance content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge and technological knowledge (TPACK) in their various activities on curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Our Germany-wide study focused on measuring intrapreneurship competence. To ensure a valid and reliable assessment, we followed the three-step assessment triangle: cognition, observation and interpretation. We modeled the intended IP competence as an interdisciplinary and interprofessional team, designed a technology-based performance assessment tool that uses authentic work tasks, and analyzed apprentices’ behavior via a model-based IRT (Rasch model) approach. Our results identify the distribution of the IP competence of apprentices on four proficiency levels. Since these results are generalizable, single IP tasks can be used by teachers to support and guide apprentices individually with regard to these proficiency levels. Our approach is a blueprint for evidence-based teaching that tackles all areas of TPACK.
A crucial problem in concrete engineering is the corrosion of steel reinforcements. Polymer fibers as alternative reinforcement material can prevent corrosion; however, high adhesion to concrete and good fiber mechanics are necessary for polymers to be considered as an alternative reinforcement. This study tested different thermoplastic polymer materials to evaluate their level of adhesion to concrete. The adhesion properties of different self‐drawn polymer fibers were analyzed by extracting the fibers from concrete using single fiber pull‐out test (SFPT). To determine the adhesion mechanism, different polymer properties were analyzed and correlated to SFPT. Strong evidence was found that the fibers mechanical properties correlate with SFPT. Roughening the fiber surface increases the SFPT results significantly. While highly polar materials can support the adhesion process, a clear correlation could not be found. This study identifies high stiffness and roughness as the crucial properties of polymer fibers used in concrete engineering. If these factors can be engineered into the fiber, polymer fibers can present an alternative to steel in concrete reinforcement.
Background: The International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) Generic-30 (Rehabilitation) Set is a tool used to assess the functioning of a clinical population in rehabilitation. The ICF Generic-30 consists of nine ICF categories from the component "body functions" and 21 from the component "activities and participation". This study aimed to develop a rating reference guide for the nine body function categories of the ICF Generic-30 Set using a predefined, structured process and to examine the interrater reliability of the ratings using the rating reference guide.
Methods: The development of the first version of the rating reference guide involved the following steps: (1) a trial of rating patients by several raters; (2) cognitive interviews with each rater to analyze the thought process involved in each rating; (3) the drafting of the rating reference guide by a multidisciplinary panel; and (4) a review by ICF specialists to confirm consistency with the ICF. Subsequently, we conducted a first field test to gain insight into the use of the guide in practice. The reference guide was modified based on the raters' feedback in the field test, and an inter-rater reliability test was conducted thereafter. Interrater agreement was evaluated using weighted kappa statistics with linear weights.
Results: The first version of the rating reference guide was successfully developed and tested. The weighted kappa coefficient in the field testing ranged from 0.25 to 0.92. The interrater reliability testing of the rating reference guide modified based on the field test results yielded an improved weighted kappa coefficient ranging from 0.53 to 0.78. Relative improvements in the weighted kappa coefficients were observed in seven out of the nine categories. Consequently, seven out of nine categories were found to have a weighted kappa coefficient of 0.61 or higher.
Conclusions: In this study, we developed and modified a rating reference guide for the body function categories of the ICF Generic-30 Set. The interrater reliability test using the final version of the rating reference guide showed moderate to substantial interrater agreement, which encouraged the use of the ICF in rehabilitation practice.
In this research we present a short distance capacitively coupled wireless power transfer (WPT) system with a self-oscillating half-bridge converter, which uses a positive feedback signal from the WPT system. By this novel implementation we find additional features of the system compared to linear amplifier based systems. With the DC bias voltage supplying the power converter, we achieve a controllable output power, tunable self-oscillation frequency and extension of the self-oscillation range. We present the analytical expressions for the converter waveforms. The theoretical analysis is confirmed by circuit simulation results and measurements on a prototype featuring a half-bridge converter with Gallium-Nitide (GaN) HEMTs. We achieve a system efficiency of 93% at a load power of 83W and 150kHz switching frequency.
We present the design of a half-bridge converter
for a capacitively coupled wireless power transfer
system. The load signal acts as a positive feedback
signal for a self-oscillation circuit which generates the
driving gate signals for the converter. Our research
reveals a robust wireless operation for a large range
of load resistors and coupling capacitors. Based on an
electric network analysis we obtain design criteria for
self-oscillation and for the power transfer. The theoretical
predictions are confirmed by circuit simulation
and measurement results on a converter prototype with
GaN-HEMTs. We report on a transfer efficiency of 92%
for a power greater than 50W at a switching frequency
of 300kHz and 200V DC link voltage.
Background
Community-dwelling older people are frequently affected by vertigo, dizziness and balance disorders (VDB). We previously developed a care pathway (CPW) to improve their mobility and participation by offering standardized approaches for general practitioners (GPs) and physical therapists (PTs). We aimed to assess the feasibility of the intervention, its implementation strategy and the study procedures in preparation for the subsequent main trial.
Methods
This 12-week prospective cohort feasibility study was accompanied by a process evaluation designed according to the UK Medical Research Council’s Guidance for developing and evaluating complex interventions. Patients with VDB (≥65 years), GPs and PTs in primary care were included. The intervention consisted of a diagnostic screening checklist for GPs and a guide for PTs. The implementation strategy included specific educational trainings and a telephone helpline. Data for mixed-method process evaluation were collected via standardized questionnaires, field notes and qualitative interviews. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics, qualitative data using content analysis.
Results
A total of five GP practices (seven single GPs), 10 PT practices and 22 patients were included in the study. The recruitment of GPs and patients was challenging (response rates: GP practices: 28%, PT practices: 39%). Ninety-one percent of the patients and all health professionals completed the study. The health professionals responded well to the educational trainings; the utilization of the telephone helpline was low (one call each from GPs and PTs). Familiarisation with the routine of application of the intervention and positive attitudes were emphasized as facilitators of the implementation of the intervention, whereas a lack of time was mentioned as a barrier. Despite difficulties in the GPs’ adherence to the intervention protocol, the GPs, PTs and patients saw benefit in the intervention. The patients’ treatment adherence to physical therapy was good. There were minor issues in data collection, but no unintended consequences.
Conclusion
Although the process evaluation provided good support for the feasibility of study procedures, the intervention and its implementation strategy, we identified a need for improvement in recruitment of participants, the GP intervention part and the data collection procedures. The findings will inform the main trial to test the interventions effectiveness in a cluster RCT.

We report on an investigation of student thinking about steady-state pipe flow of an incompressible fluid. About 250 undergraduate engineering students were given a test consisting of two hydrodynamics questions, combining multiple-choice format with subsequent open-ended explanations. There is substantial evidence that students have difficulty applying and prioritizing the two basic principles of mass conservation (expressed in the continuity equation) and energy conservation (i.e., Bernoulli’s equation). When faced with questions that involve gravity, dissipative effects (“friction”), or a visible pressure drop, a considerable number of students did not invoke the continuity equation in situations where applying it is a necessary step for arriving at the correct answer. Instead, even after lecture instruction on this topic, many of the first-year students based their answers on ill-supported assumptions about local pressures. Some of them used formal arguments from a simplified Bernoulli equation (“lower pressure means higher velocity”), while others based their answer on intuitive arguments (“higher pressure leads to higher velocity”). We also found reasoning based on analogies to single-particle motion (“flow velocity decreases when flowing upwards or friction is present”). Contrary to other researchers, we did not see any evidence for the hypothesis that students think of water as a compressible fluid. Instead, students’ answers often indicate a lack of understanding of the conservation of mass or its implications for incompressible fluids or of the role that this principle plays in the context of fluid flow. In addition, our data indicate that some students have more general difficulties in describing and reasoning about technical situations, such as applying equations containing multiple variables, distinguishing spatial differences in a quantity from its changes with respect to time, or realizing the meaning of idealizations. We also present some evidence that different levels of activation of students during instruction influence the prevalence of these difficulties and discuss some implications for instruction.

Large-scale, hypogene iron mineralization systems developed recurrently in the São Francisco craton in association with two orogenies. During the ca. 2.1–2.0 Ga Trans-Amazonian orogeny, low-temperature and low-to-moderate-salinity metamorphic fluids resulted in carbonatization-related iron enrichment of the early Paleoproterozoic Cauê Iron Formation (IF) of the Minas Supergroup (MSG) as well as short-distance iron mobilization. Monazite from the iron-oxide veins yielded a SHRIMP 232Th/208Pb date corresponding to fluid circulation coeval with the migmatization of the Archean tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite crust. During the Ediacaran to Cambrian Brasiliano orogeny, when the São Francisco craton was consolidated in its present configuration, hydrothermal fluids repeatedly mineralized the Cauê IF and the younger IFs of the lower Espinhaço Supergroup. Far-field hydrothermal alteration associated with distinct Fe mineralization episodes widely affected Meso- to Neoproterozoic sequences as well as Archean to Paleoproterozoic terranes of the cratonic core. Circulation of hydrothermal fluids during the Brasiliano orogeny caused desilicification, iron mobilization, and widespread alteration of the rocks. The alteration events are dated with monazite and xenotime intergrown with hematite, anatase, and recrystallized rims of detrital zircons from interlayered quartzites and of igneous zircons from pegmatites, granites, acidic volcanic rocks, and orthogneisses, yielding U-Pb dates between 542 and 493 Ma. U-Pb dates point to five Cambrian hydrothermal events from the waning stages to the aftermath of the Brasiliano orogeny. These hydrothermal fluid circulation events correspond to the emplacement ages of four granite suites and pegmatites that lasted from the final stages of the collision to the collapse of the Araçuaí-West Congo orogen. Episodic circulation of fluids continued for approximately 2 billion years after IF deposition on the eastern São Francisco craton with the formation of high-grade iron ore deposits and resetting of the IF trace-element inventory.
Background
Vertigo, dizziness and balance disorders (VDB) are common in older people and cause restrictions in mobility and social participation. Due to a multifactorial aetiology, health care is often overutilised, but many patients are also treated insufficiently in primary care. The purpose of this study was to develop a care pathway as a complex intervention to improve mobility and participation in older people with VDB in primary care.
Methods
The development process followed the UK Medical Research Council guidance using a mixed-methods design with individual and group interviews carried out with patients, physical therapists (PTs), general practitioners (GPs), nurses working in community care and a multi-professional expert panel to create a first draft of a care pathway (CPW) and implementation strategy using the Consolidated Framework of Implementation Research and the Expert recommendations for Implementing Change. Subsequently, small expert group modelling of specific components of the CPW was carried out, with GPs, medical specialists and PTs. The Behaviour Change Wheel was applied to design the intervention´s approach to behaviour change. To derive theoretical assumptions, we adopted Kellogg´s Logic Model to consolidate the hypothesized chain of causes leading to patient-relevant outcomes.
Results
Individual interviews with patients showed that VDB symptoms need to be taken more seriously by GPs. Patients demanded age-specific treatment offers, group sessions or a continuous mentoring by a PT. GPs required a specific guideline for diagnostics and treatment options including psychosocial interventions. Specific assignment to and a standardized approach during physical therapy were desired by PTs. Nurses favoured a multi-professional documentation system. The structured three-day expert workshop resulted in a first draft of CPW and potential implementation strategies. Subsequent modelling resulted in a CPW with components and appropriate training materials for involved health professionals. A specific implementation strategy is now available.
Conclusion
A mixed-methods design was suggested to be a suitable approach to develop a complex intervention and its implementation strategy. We will subsequently test the intervention for its acceptability and feasibility in a feasibility study accompanied by a comprehensive process evaluation to inform a subsequent effectiveness trial.

Background
Implementation frameworks may support local implementation strategies with a sound theoretical foundation. The Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) facilitates identification of contextual barriers and facilitators, and the Expert Recommendations for Implementing Change (ERIC) allows identifying adequate implementation strategies. Both instruments are already used in German-speaking countries; however, no standardised and validated translation is available thus far. The aim of this study was to translate the CFIR and ERIC framework into German, in order to increase the use of these frameworks and the adherence to evidence-based implementation efforts in German-speaking countries.
Methods
The translation of the original versions of the CFIR and ERIC framework was guided by the World Health Organisation’s recommendations for the process of translating and adapting both conceptual frameworks. Accordingly, a four-step process was employed: first, forward translation from English into German was conducted by a research team of German native speakers with fluent knowledge of the English language. Second, a bilingual expert panel comprising one researcher with German as his mother tongue and expert command of the English language and one English language expert and university teacher reviewed the translation and discussed inconsistencies with the initial translators. Third, back-translation into English was conducted by an English native speaking researcher. The final version was pre-tested with 12 German researchers and clinicians who were involved in implementation projects using cognitive interviews.
Results
The translation and review process revealed some inconsistencies between the original version and the German translations. All issues could be solved by discussion. Central aspects of the items were confirmed in 60 to 70% of the items, and modifications were proposed in 30% of the items. Finally, we revised one CFIR-item heading after pre-testing. The final version was given consent by all involved parties.
Conclusions
Now, two validated and tested implementation frameworks to guide implementation efforts are available in the German language and can be used to increase the application of agreed-on implementation strategies into practice.
The objective of this study was to catalog items from instruments used to measure functioning, disability, and contextual factors in patients with low back pain treated with manual medicine (manipulation and mobilization) according to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. This catalog will be used to inform the development of an International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health-based assessment schedule for low back pain patients treated with manual medicine. In this scoping review, we systematically searched MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, and CINAHL. We identified instruments (questionnaires, clinical tests, single questions) used to measure functioning, disability, and contextual factors, extracted the relevant items, and then linked these items to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. We included 95 articles and identified 1510 meaningful concepts. All but 70 items were linked to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. Of the concepts linked to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, body functions accounted for 34.7%, body structures accounted for 0%, activities and participation accounted for 41%, environmental factors accounted for 3.6%, and personal factors accounted for 16%. Most items used to measure functioning and disability in low back pain patient treated with manual medicine focus on body functions, as well as activities and participation. The lack of measures that address environmental factors warrants further investigation.
