A reconfigurable planar inductor based on bistable compliant mechanism is proposed. Flexible snapping of wire elements is used for modification of the loop area and self inductance as well as for the mutual coupling between laterally arranged multiple inductors in a magneto-inductive wave (MIW) device. A mechanical model is presented building the basis for an analytical inductance model. The bistable reconfigurability is demonstrated experimentally and confirmed by numerical simulation results.
The 12th International Conference on Physics Teaching in Engineering Education (PTEE 2024) took place from 15th to 17th of May, 2024 at TH Rosenheim. This “Program and Abstracts” contains the conference time schedule as well as the abstracts and video links of the 3 keynotes and the abstracts of the 46 contributions. The contributions cover actual themes in teaching engineers at universities and universities of applied sciences. Among others they are related to: SoTL (Scholarship of Teaching and Learning), influence of the pandemic on teaching, artificial intelligence in learning and teaching including learning analytics, and innovative concepts for lectures and labs in physics and engineering subjects.

Analyzing and Optimizing Fixed-Point Operations on a MATLAB Simulink based Motion Control System

This paper deals with the analysis and optimization of fixed-point operations in the context of motion control systems and the MathWorks MATLAB® Simulink® environment. It presents a procedure for estimating the maximum arithmetic error of fixed-point operations inside a modeled control loop, which can be used to verify compliance with a defined precision. Additionally, it shows the results of a runtime analysis for different numerical data types in combination with two fixed-point operations: addition and multiplication. In order to improve the fixed-point performance for MATLAB® Simulink® models, two optimized implementations are provided, which can improve the fixed-point operations by a factor up to 3, compared to the automatically generated operation implementations. The paper results are based on the MATLAB® R2022b release.
Servo drives in production machines are either position-, speed-, force- or torque-controlled. As the motor current is proportional to torque or force, the current control loop dynamics is crucial for all operating modes. In production machines used in the semiconductor industry, it is particularly important that the bandwidths of the control loops are continuously increased. It is thus important to take the dependency of motor resistance and inductance on frequency in control loop design into consideration. As the switching frequencies of wide-bandgap semiconductors increase, the effect becomes even more significant. This paper discusses the influence of frequency-dependent resistance and inductance on the behavior of a PI current controller. A design method for an optimized and robust current controller is then presented on this basis. Verification is performed with two completely different servo motors-a 3-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor and a high-dynamic optimized voice-coil motor.
The measurement of torque is often based on a measured deformation, which results from a torsional load acting on the sensor. Strain gauges are standard devices for quantifying the deformation. In this paper, a device determining the torque based on a measured relative distortion of a torsional flexible body is presented. Two position measuring devices are used to determine the relative distortion. The design criteria for the flexible body of the sensor are discussed. A prototype using the proposed measurement principle was built up and analyzed regarding the achievable accuracy of the torque measurement at pure torsional loads and also under disturbing loads. The results show a high accuracy in the torque measurement with a linearity error in the range of 0.11% of the maximum torque. The influence of disturbing loads on the torque measurement can be neglected, which is an advantage compared to other torque sensors.
A "hybrid" team-based physics course was developed and rolled out at the Albstadt-Sigmaringen University, Germany, with the intention to provide more flexibility in space and time for the students. Data on the correlation between type of participation and learning success showed, that participation in person together with the performance in other STEM related courses are the main predictors for learning success. Interestingly, it had no influence on the learning success of the non-participating students whether they participated remotely or not at all. Thus, the biggest challenge for the lecture of the future, which offers more flexibility in space and time, is the "activation" of students who participate remotely.
