Usually, the feedback signal for the speed or velocity controller is calculated from the measured position. Therefore, position measuring errors affect these control loops. This study presents an analytic error model that considers non-ideal sinusoidal measuring signals with basic deviations (amplitude differences, offset errors, and phase shift) as well as signal harmonics. The model was used to systematically investigate the influence of signal quality and the number of signal periods from position measuring devices on speed ripple, across a wide range of speeds. Using Gallium Nitride (GaN) or Silicon Carbide (SiC) semiconductors for motor inverters enables energy efficient operation up to pulse width modulation (PWM) frequencies of 500 kHz. This allows motor filters with small component sizes. As a result, high motor efficiency, low torque ripple, high control bandwidth and almost ideal sinusoidal output voltages are achieved. Halle/Saale, 11.05.2017 N2 - Bio-based products show a great potential to reduce the dependence on fossil resources. Germany currently has a forerunner role in the EU, using biomass as the same resource base for material and energetic utilisation. Beech wood is hyped in both ways: In material usage directly e.g., in the building sector to balance the possible scarcity of soft wood in the future, as well as indirectly as a feedstock for biorefineries, representing a long-term alternative to the fossil-based industry, and secondly, as energetic use due to its excellent burning quality. The BIOECONOMY CLUSTER sees itself as an actor in a difficult tension field within implementation of the wood-based Bioeconomy. With a total stocking volume of about 635 million m3, beech is the most abundant hardwood tree species in Germany. Nevertheless, beech wood-based biorefineries compete in a difficile tension field. One crucial factor is the reliable supply of raw materials - a consistent biomass quality, season-independent availability and efficient logistics of the raw material. However, the production processes are technically feasible; thus, finally, there is no guarantee for selling the bio-based products to the obtained price. How to overcome the strong tension field in the beech-based Bioeconomy? Different selected examples show possible approaches. To manage the wood-based Bioeconomy and the beech wood supply chain effectively, the influencing of factors and the managing of the same is crucial. In case of availability, the most critical raw materials are metallic ores and industrial minerals. Within the scope of developing resource efficient buildings, innovative building technologies, such as renewable energy systems, are becoming increasingly integral parts of buildings. Since critical raw materials are essential components in building technologies, they will also play an important role in the housing sector. In this context, it is crucial to consider how sustainability goals in the housing sector are affected by raw material criticality. This paper addresses supply and vulnerability risks of indium, which is contained in thin-film photovoltaics, in order to identify their impacts on future developments in the housing sector. Raw material availability is significantly influenced by the demand and supply of raw materials. To implement risk factors for a criticality assessment in sector-specific material flows, their impacts are analysed and modelled using a dynamic, macro-economic approach. Assuming different energy scenarios in the German housing sector up to 2050, the model reveals the raw material criticality by pointing out supply risks in order to derive recommendations. T1 - MAGNETIC RATE DAMPING FOR SATELLITES IN LEO T2 - 32nd ANNUAL AAS GUIDANCE AND CONTROL CONFERENCE N2 - This article deals with the topic of damping the rates of a satellite after separation from the launcher by sensing the rates with magnetometers or gyroscopes and actually damping it with torquerods or thrusters. In literature problems of this kind are treated by linearization which is not adequate here due to the high nonlinearity of the problem caused by the high gyroscopic torque. This paper addresses the observability and controllability of the rate dynamics for symmetric satellite bodies. Furthermore, robust stability of any bodies is investigated by means of the Krasovskii–LaSalle principle which is a variant of Ljapunov’s Second Method. It is found that – apart from one exception - the system is robustly stable for certain conditions depending only on the gain matrix and not depending on the orbit, moments of inertia or initial conditions. The exception is that of the intuitive case of an equator type orbit, in which the satellite rotates around the magnetic field lines, in this case the satellite’s rate cannot be damped. Several design configurations are analysed with respect to their performance and cost: Rate damping with magnetometers or gyroscopes as sensors, and torquerods and thrusters as actuators. The results are evaluated with respect to the time to reach the desired rate, the propellant and the power equivalent battery mass used. The goal is to use the results to allow an AOCS equipment and architecture trade-off at an early project phase. The design of the rate damping control of the SWARM project is presented as an example and demonstrated with simulations. T1 - Advanced AOCS Design on the First Small GEO Telecom Satellite T2 - 60th International Astronautical Congress, Oct. 12 -16, 2009, Daejon, South Korea N2 - The advanced Attitude and Orbit Control System (AOCS) design of the Small GEO platform is now being adapted for the first commercial mission. The Small GEO telecommunications satellite is a new development to fill a niche in the telecom industry for small platforms weighing about 1.5 tonnes and targeting payloads of 300 kg and 3 kW. The first mission will launch into Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO). Small GEO is being developed by a Consortium led by OHBSystem AG. The Swedish Space Corporation is a partner in the Consortium and supplies the AOCS and Electric Propulsion (EP) subsystems. The project is currently in Phase C and the first mission will fly in 2012. This article gives an overview of the AOCS development status. The AOCS architecture is a three-axis stabilized system using reaction wheels for attitude control, star trackers for attitude determination, and EP for orbit control. The AOCS software is being developed using model-based design techniques and test driven development. Results from subsystem level testing of flight code will be presented. The AOCS design is characterized by a number of advances in technology beyond traditional telecom satellite designs. Perhaps the largest deviation from a traditional design is complete reliance on EP for orbit control. Angular momentum management of the reaction wheels relies solely upon EP in the nominal modes. The EP is not used in the safe modes and therefore a cold gas system is included On-board. The cold gas system uses Xenon, the same fuel used by the EP. Another advance is the reliance upon APS-based star trackers. APS (Active Pixel Sensor) star trackers have a number of advantages over their CCD-based cousins in terms of robustness. The traditional fine sun sensor is simplified to a fault tolerant system of solar cells giving low, but more than adequate, accuracy. In addition, a GPS sensor will be flown on-board as an experiment. T1 - Calibration by Optimization Without Using Derivatives JF - Optimization and Engineering N2 - Applications in engineering frequently require the adjustment of certain parameters. While the mathematical laws that determine these parameters often are well understood, due to time limitations in every day industrial life, it is typically not feasible to derive an explicit computational procedure for adjusting the parameters based on some given measurement data. This paper aims at showing that in such situations, direct optimization offers a very simple approach that can be of great help. More precisely, we present a numerical implementation for the local minimization of a smooth function f:Rn→R subject to upper and lower bounds without relying on the knowledge of the derivative of f. In contrast to other direct optimization approaches the algorithm assumes that the function evaluations are fairly cheap and that the rounding errors associated with the function evaluations are small. As an illustration, this algorithm is applied to approximate the solution of a calibration problem arising from an engineering application. The algorithm uses a Quasi-Newton trust region approach adjusting the trust region radius with a line search. The line search is based on a spline function which minimizes a weighted least squares sum of the jumps in its third derivative. The approximate gradients used in the Quasi-Newton approach are computed by central finite differences. A new randomized basis approach is considered to generate finite difference approximations of the gradient which also allow for a curvature correction of the Hessian in addition to the Quasi-Newton update. These concepts are combined with an active set strategy. The implementation is public domain; numerical experiments indicate that the algorithm is well suitable for the calibration problem of measuring instruments that prompted this research. Further preliminary numerical results suggest that an approximate local minimizer of a smooth non-convex function f depending on n≤300 variables can be computed with a number of iterations that grows moderately with n.
