Circularity of wood products can reduce this demand by improving resource efficiency, but barriers like uncertain availability and quality of post-consumer wood hinder implementation. This study optimizes and extends the PRecTimber model to forecast post-consumer wood quantities and qualities in Germany (revised with quality information), Finland, and Sweden. By 2050, predicted post-consumer wood volumes are 14.11 Mt in Germany, 1.64 Mt in Finland, and 2.74 Mt in Sweden, mainly from the construction sector. Our quality assessment methodology with scenario analysis (status quo S0 and improved scenarios S1–S2 with +10 and +20 percentage-point gains in key quality factors) reveals that the shares of post-consumer construction sawnwood suitable for lifespan extension and material recycling, respectively, are 25 % and 59 % under S0, 36 % and 50 % under S1, and 49 % and 38 % under S2. Leveraging these quantity and quality insights, policy reforms can support industries and technological innovation to optimize the use of post-consumer wood. The resulting advantages are demonstrated by evaluating data collected from a stiff in-service bridge structure. User-centered design approaches, such as the persona method, offer strategies to address these challenges. Objective: Personas were created to inform the development of technologies supporting ageing in place by enhancing stakeholders’ understanding of needs and technology experience among older adults. Methods: The personas were developed through an iterative process, with this paper detailing the last stage, which employed the a PATHY technique as conceptual framework for content analysis. Eleven focus group discussions were conducted in southern Germany, of which nine were included in the analysis. These involved older adults in need of support, with orthopedic and neurological conditions, and in informal caregiving roles. Results: Five hybrid personas were created to represent the target groups’ experiences related to ageing in place, each reflecting needs, problems, existing solutions, habits, sociodemographic characteristics, and dimensions of technology experience. Key factors influencing technology experience and uptake among the personas were identified, including the social context and availability of support, the perceived trade-off between safety and digital privacy, and the persistence of the digital divide. Conclusion: The findings underscore the necessity of adaptable, context-sensitive technology solutions, displayed by the personas’ needs, pains, routines and technology experiences. Thereby, the hybrid personas reinforce the importance of a more relational and context-aware approach in user-centered design. However, most often systems, such as shared autonomous vehicles (SAV), are not designed according to the diverse needs of people with disabilities. It is still an open question how people with disabilities assess such systems in terms of acceptability and accessibility. Person with impairments need to take part in the design process of SAV to increase acceptance and accessibility. To close this research gap, a Europe-wide online survey was administered and data from 273 people with impairment and 312 without impairment was collected on their assessment of future SAVs. Survey respondents were asked about their intention to use SAVs and to assess the mobility system based on the five facets of the Mobility Divide Index (autonomy, travel time, convenience, comfort, and safety). The findings showed that people with disabilities took a rather critical view of SAVs and revealed a low intention to use. However, the results suggest that people with disabilities see benefits of SAVs for a more independent and easier mobility. Findings also indicate that SAVs are not expected to make their trips faster, comfortable, and safer. Results revealed a gender effect for one MDI facet. Women with impairments assessed SAVs as less comfortable compared to men. No significant differences in the assessment of SAVs between different types of disabilities were found. Qualitative findings regarding the suggestions for improvement were analyzed. Nearly 300 suggestions for improvements were analysed and clustered into 13 categories (trust, safety & security, on-board staff, entry and exit, availability of information, costs, travel time, previous experiences, availability, wheelchair compatibility, app usage, accessibility in general and others). These findings suggest that information and communication is essential for persons with disabilities when using SAVs. Information transparency must be ensured in future SAVs. The categories identified in the qualitative analysis provide valuable insights to address the information gaps relevant to this target group, particularly regarding accessibility. Based on the findings, in the current development phase of SAVs, the focus should be on building trust and promoting acceptance of these vehicles. In this way, the intention to use SAVs among people with disabilities could be enhanced and a more inclusive mobility future for SAVs is realized. This article shows that a FedRAMP equivalent certification process combined with a European cloud certificate especially designed for the public administration could be the trigger to a successful and faster cloud implementation in the public administration sector in Europe that is currently underdeveloped. This is usually done in a fluidized bed (Wurster coater) or a coating drum. Pneumatic conveying systems are usually already installed for conveying particulate media, for example between process steps or the filling. In pneumatic conveying, the fluidized state of the Wurster Coater is already present. The basic idea of the current project is to implement the coating step directly in the pneumatic conveying system. Experimental approach: The coating tests were carried out using a vacuum system. For this purpose, various coating chambers with different nozzle arrangements were printed using a rapid prototyper. The nozzles used were also printed in-house and adapted to the requirements. Particles with a diameter of 3 mm were used for the tests and sprayed with a common protective coating as well as blue dye. The particles were heated to 120°C in order to supply the necessary heat to evaporate the solvent. Images of the coated particles were taken and evaluated with ImageJ to analyze the coating result. The amount of coating delivered changes the coating layer linearly as expected. The tests showed that it is possible to coat particles during pneumatic conveying. A comparison with coating in a Wurster coater showed that the amount of overspray is higher than in a Wurster coater, leading a lower efficiency in the coating step in pneumatic conveying though. The selection of the stirrer is based on the desired flow pattern and the rheological properties of the material being processed. A change in the mixing task or a significant shift in material properties during the process can lead to decreased efficiency, longer mixing times, or poorer mixing quality. To address the need for handling various tasks across a wide range of applications with the same mixer, a multi-purpose mixer with adjustable tools was developed. It consists of a coaxial stirrer with an inner and an outer stirrer. The blades of the inner stirrer can be changed in inclination during the process. This allows different tasks, such as dispersion, aeration, and suspension, to be performed efficiently in succession without the need for tool changes. Additionally, the process parameters can be dynamically changed to compensate for changes in the process. Energy input into the fluid serves as a key parameter to quantify the quality of a dispersion process. The three independent actuators can be used to achieve the best energy input. To identify the optimal settings, a control algorithm called the "automated design of experience" was developed. This algorithm adjusts the speed of the main and coaxial stirrers and the blade angle in a sequential manner, evaluating whether these changes lead to improved or worsened energy input. An inline turbidity measurement at the upstream outlet can be used to monitor dynamically the separation efficiency. The variable cross-section area can be controlled depending on the fluctuating volume flow or on a specific outlet concentration based on the measured turbidity. Experiments showed that operating the system at a constant pressure loss improves the separation efficiency despite a reduction of the volume flow. Efficient separation at different or even fluctuating volume flow is hence possible. The classi cation was carried out in this way in [11] when the group of group-like elements is abelian and the prime divisors of the order of the group are > 7. In this case the appearing Nichols algebras are of Cartan type. Based on recent work of Heckenberger about diagonal Nichols algebras [29, 28, 27] we compute explicitly the liftings of some Nichols algebras not treated in [11]; namely we lift - all Nichols algebras with Cartan matrix of type A2 (Theorem 6.3.3), - some Nichols algebras with Cartan matrix of type B2 (Theorem 6.4.3), and - some Nichols algebras of two Weyl equivalence classes of non-standard type (Theorem 6.5.3), giving new classes of nite-dimensional pointed Hopf algebras. However, inefficiencies due to undetected faults in substations result in high return temperatures, increasing heat losses, and limiting the integration of renewable energy sources. The lack of publicly available labeled datasets poses a significant challenge for fault detection using supervised learning models. To address this issue, this study explores three machine learning-based synthetic data generation techniques – time series forecasting, generative adversarial networks (GANs), and fault signature transfer. These methods aim to increase publicly available data either by sharing the generating model or a synthetic dataset. The novelty lies in the combination of advanced supervised machine learning methods being applied to a large, fully labeled data set to create new, equally labeled data for publication, as, to our knowledge, no such dataset has been compiled before. We evaluate our methods on the first-of-its-kind ILSE dataset, which includes real-world smart meter data from 547 substations and 1,162 reviewed faults from a German DHS network, including detailed root cause information. Overall, time series forecasting achieves an MAPE of 3% to 10% for inlet and outlet temperature and 25% to 40% for heat load and flow rate, both of which are within year-to-year variance. For GANs, specifically TimeGAN, we found a discriminative score of about 0.10 compared to 0.24 in the original publication when tested on Energy benchmark data. Fault signature transfer has yet to yield usable results, most likely due to the high variance in the fault signatures, fault duration, and overlapping or multiple root causes. The hotel and restaurant industry faces a particular challenge. It must combine traditional, highly personalized services with new digital technologies. The German vocational education system shows increasing digital integration. However, systematic analyses are missing. These analyses should examine which digital competencies are included in trainingprograms. They should also show how professional requirements are changing. Approach: This study uses a multi-method research design. The first step examined key regulatory documents. These included training regulations and curricula for hotel specialists and cooks. We used qualitative content analysis for this examination. The second step involved 33 guided expert interviews. We interviewed stakeholders from companies, vocational schools, associations, and staff members. We analyzed the data using qualitative-deductive methods. The analysis followed theoretically based category systems. Findings: The document analysis shows that digital content exists in the regulatory materials. We found explicit digital content (n=37) and implicit digital content (n=52). The materials include requirements for trainees such as process understanding, teamwork skills, and adaptability. However, gaps exist in several areas. These include data analysis, creativity, lifelong learning, and cross-disciplinary interest. The interview analysis identified five central transformation areas. These are digital sales, digital guest journey, process optimization, digital staff management, and data-based decision support. These changes create new skill requirements on three levels: Knowledge (e.g , IT basics and tool know-how), Skills (for example, handling digital systems, organization, and communication), and Attitudes (for example, openness, willingness to learn, and team orientation). Conclusions: The results show that technological developments in the hotel and restaurant industry have wide-reaching effects. They do not only require technical adjustments but also deep pedagogical and didactic changes in vocational education. A tension exists between economic requirements (such as automation) and the need for social-emotional skills. This tension is especially important in direct guest contact. Number of backers had the biggest impact on project success. For German projects, the influence of backers was significantly higher than in the UK and USA. The size of the funding goal emerged as the most influential factor in UK and Germany, while the team favorite award did not show a significant influential effect in the whole sample. The accumulation of small plastic fragments—microplastics and nanoplastics—potentially threatens organisms, ecosystems, and human health. Researchers commonly employ non-destructive analytical methods to assess the presence and characteristics of microplastic particles in environmental samples. However, these techniques require extensive sample preparation, which represents a significant limitation and hinders a direct on-site analysis. In this context, previous investigations showed the potential of fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) for fast and reliable identification of microplastics in an environmental matrix. However, since microplastics receive an environmental coating after entering nature, a challenge arises from organic contamination on the surface of microplastic particles. How this influences the fluorescence signal and the possibility of microplastic detection are unknown. We analyzed the fluorescence spectra and lifetimes of the samples using fluorescence spectroscopy and frequency-domain fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FD-FLIM), respectively. Our results demonstrate that reliably identifying and differentiating ABS and PET was possible via FD-FLIM, even in the presence of these biological contaminations. These findings highlight the potential of this technique as a valuable tool for environmental monitoring and plastic characterization, offering a rapid and efficient alternative to currently used analytical methods. An approach employing CUSUM Charts is introduced to identify substring outages within PV systems effectively. The methodology utilizes fundamental field data that is commonly available in practice. A filtering approach, combined with the use of CUSUM control charts, minimizes false positives, ensuring that only consistent underperformance is flagged as an out-age. The methodology returns far fewer false positives and more stable error intervals for substring outages than a former monitoring approach. Overall, the study demonstrates a significant improvement in detecting substring outages. The advanced methodology enables more effective O&M for PV plants, where substring outages are reliably identified after a short detection time. The proposed system leverages diverse datasets, including DadaGP, GuitarToday, and Leduc, with novel data pre-processing and tokenization strategies. We have developed metrics for tablature accuracy and playability to quantitatively evaluate the performance. The experimental results demonstrate that the Fretting-Transformer surpasses baseline methods like A* and commercial applications like Guitar Pro. Fibers made of polypropylene show a low bonding behavior in concrete. Fillers can help to overcome this issue but often lead to reduced mechanical properties. Core-shell fibers, which split the mechanical properties and the bonding behavior between the core and the shell component, could be a solution. This study investigates mono-material and core-shell fibers produced with calcium carbonate and bentonite fillers and compares their behavior in tensile tests, density measurements, contact angle measurements, topography measurements, single fiber pull-out tests, reflected light microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The fillers caused an increased drawability, resulting in higher mechanical properties. Further, in the core-shell fibers, the calcium carbonate increased the surface roughness, which led to a better anchoring of the fiber in concrete, which was also visible in the deformation during pull-out observed in reflected light microscopy pictures. We deployed the ecosystem in six households for one week and found that it increased participants’ perceived control, awareness, and understanding of smart home privacy. Technologies using infrared technology, as well as video and sound transmission are used to recognize movement to prevent falls and enable the continuous recording of vital parameters. Individual assessment of the necessity and limits of application from a nursing care perspective is essential due to the restriction on the patient’s privacy and autonomy. As an example, the Oxevision monitoring system is analysed in more detail in this project. Care professionals as well as the public were asked about the potentials and risk factors of video-based monitoring systems using semi-structured interviews and an online survey. This paper intends to provide a basis for discussion for the use of video-based monitoring systems in long-term inpatient care facilities. The aim is to conduct qualitative and quantitative fundamental research as a basis for generating data and a critical analysis of the topic. In addition to displaying the opinion of the general public, the limitations and potential benefits of these technologies are illustrated and ethical aspects are discussed. Method The research was conducted in a mixed-method design by a student research group. All surveys are based on prior literature research however, the analysis is based on defined criteria. Interviews were conducted with nursing care professionals (n=4) and people from the public (n=244) were surveyed on the topic of video-based monitoring systems via an online survey. The interviews were analysed using inductive, structured content analysis methods as Mayring describes to be a suitable analysis method. The online survey was analysed using statistical methods to draw credible quantitative results. Results and Discussion The results clearly show that video-based monitoring systems have both advantages and disadvantages as well as ethical aspects and factors that influence the acceptance of video-based monitoring which must be weighed up individually. From the total responses of n=244, 47,1% (n=115) of survey participants are in favour of the use of monitoring systems in nursing, while 40,1% are undecided. The most frequently mentioned advantages from the interviews included continual vital sign monitoring, faster reactions in emergencies, a reduction in the workload of nursing staff and an increase in patient safety, for example through improved fall prevention for patients. In contrast, 185 people (75,8%) of the survey participants are of the opinion that video monitoring systems should not be used across the board and that specific groups of people should be considered differentially. Frequently cited reasons for this are data protection, restriction of privacy and self-determination, as well as the fear of data abuse. The hereby collected data suggests that a general interest in the implementation of video-based monitoring systems is apparent among the population. In order to increase acceptance, of aspects such as data protection, privacy and possible abuse of data, further research is needed to establish a reliable conclusion to this matter. Through nine expert interviews with physicians from diverse medical backgrounds, the study aims to understand concerns and anticipated benefits of AI in the doctor–patient relationship. To demonstrate AI’s applications, digital anamnesis surveys were conducted with two actual patients, and the resulting data were interpreted by AI and reviewed by physicians. Findings indicate that physicians view AI as potentially beneficial, expecting that AI can facilitate improvements in care quality, efficiency, and time savings. Despite initial concerns about AI’s ability to address individual patient needs and its impact on the doctor–patient relationship, there is significant interest in integrating AI tools into daily practice. Key issues include patient constitution, the effort-to-benefit ratio, and potential risks to patient trust. The study identifies six areas for further research: Economic impact and cost-benefit analysis, patient acceptance and trust, stress reduction and job satisfaction, effects on doctor–patient relationships, development of verification mechanisms, and ethical and legal considerations. These findings underscore the complexities of AI integration in health care, emphasizing the need to address concerns about patient individuality, data privacy, and interpersonal relationships while harnessing AI’s potential. Polybutylene succinate (PBS), a plastic produced from succinic acid, is among the promising materials for the future. However, the production of bio-based succinic acid through biotechnical processes in controlled environments presents challenges. This process leads to increased costs and is currently not economically competitive compared to crude oil-based succinic acid production. In addition to succinic acid, levulinic acid is another monomer produced in the same process. A novel approach to the digestion of biomass has been developed to address the issue of biotechnological production of bio-based platform chemicals. This innovative process employs microwave radiation, pressure, and temperature to convert wood residues into succinic acid and levulinic acid. Various catalyst concentrations and biomass ratios were tested in a batch process, with high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC/MS) analyses revealing the formation of succinic acid, levulinic acid, formic acid, and 2 oxoglutaric acid. The results demonstrate that microwaves combined with a metal salt catalyst can be used to produce platform chemicals from lignocellulosic biomass. To further advance the continuous production of PBS, a twin-screw extruder was modified and adapted after the successful results obtained from the batch processes. This setup enables additional experiments to evaluate the transferability of batch process results to continuous reactions, facilitating the scale-up and economic viability of the overall PBS production process in the future. To overcome this issue, alternative noncorrosive reinforcements such as polymer fibers could be used. However, as environmental protection becomes more important, sustainability must also be considered in the solution. An alternative to polymers based on raw oil is bio-based polymers. This study investigates the suitability of polymer fibers produced from polybutylene succinate together with cellulose and wood fillers as concrete reinforcements. Different mixtures of polybutylene succinate, cellulose, and wood fillers were created, and fibers were produced using a multiple drawing process. The fibers were tested using tensile tests, a single-fiber pull-out test, contact angle measurements, reflected light microscopy, density measurements, and thermogravimetric analysis. The fillers were shown to decrease the mechanical properties as the particle size and filler amount increased, resulting in a reduction in Young’s modulus and tensile strength of 55% and 70%, respectively, while adhesion to concrete increased with particle size from 0.31 ± 0.02 N/mm2 without filler to 0.90 ± 0.10 N/mm2 for the best-performing material combination. Reflected light microscopy images show changes in the fiber surface before and after pull-out. The fiber density decreased from 1.26 ± 0.05 g/cm3 to 0.91 ± 0.04 g/cm3 with an increasing filler amount and particle size for a compound with 10 weight percent of wood filler 1. The fiber thermal stability decreased slightly with the addition of filler. The greatest effect was a reduction in the temperature to ≈58 °C at 1% weight loss when 10 weight percent of wood was added. This study proves the possibility of using bio-based materials as concrete reinforcements. Furthermore, we elaborate the proposed model with an extensive dataset of events of a worldwide known German software company. In addition to promising results (e.g.) with regard to n-gram models, the training time of the proposed model is shorter than that of typical reference models such as neural networks with a long short-term memory architecture (LSTM).
