Polybutylene succinate (PBS), a plastic produced from succinic acid, is among the promising materials for the future. However, the production of bio-based succinic acid through biotechnical processes in controlled environments presents challenges. This process leads to increased costs and is currently not economically competitive compared to crude oil-based succinic acid production. In addition to succinic acid, levulinic acid is another monomer produced in the same process. A novel approach to the digestion of biomass has been developed to address the issue of biotechnological production of bio-based platform chemicals. This innovative process employs microwave radiation, pressure, and temperature to convert wood residues into succinic acid and levulinic acid. Various catalyst concentrations and biomass ratios were tested in a batch process, with high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS) analyses revealing the formation of succinic acid, levulinic acid, formic acid, and 2 oxoglutaric acid. The results demonstrate that microwaves combined with a metal salt catalyst can be used to produce platform chemicals from lignocellulosic biomass. To further advance the continuous production of PBS, a twin-screw extruder was modified and adapted after the successful results obtained from the batch processes. This setup enables additional experiments to evaluate the transferability of batch process results to continuous reactions, facilitating the scale-up and economic viability of the overall PBS production process in the future.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{Niemann2024, author = {Niemann, Anne}, title = {Einfach gut? However, current algorithms for decision-making automation in business lack trust and transparency. Additionally, they can suffer from mistakes if stakeholders with limited digital literacy report no or wrong data to the algorithm. Allowing stakeholders to participate directly in decision-making processes has the potential to enhance acceptance of decisions and strengthen cooperation. This paper proposes the concept of Cyber-Social Consensus (CSC), an inclusive, trustworthy and transparent automated decision-making protocol that combines algorithms with human participation. Algorithmic automation is facilitated via blockchain-based smart contracts, human involvement via email communication as a traditional, widely-used tool to accommodate different levels of digital literacy. An areal measurement of fluorescent lifetimes of these materials can be done using Frequency-Domain Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (FD-FLIM). Up until now, most plastic detection is done using NIR or X-ray, while most applications of FD-FLIM are in biomedicalfields. The application of FD-FLIM in a food safety setting presents a promising approach to the detection of plastic contaminants. A Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) based neural network is developed to reliably identify the presence of plastic in a food/plastic sample via FD-FLIM. Features like the mean, median, standard deviation, variance, range, and interquartile range are calculated from the intensity image, the phase shift and modulation index along with the according phase- and modulation-dependent fluorescence lifetimes from the FD-FLIM data. For training, test and validation, a total of 3520 FD-FLIM measurements have been taken at 445nm excitation of sixteen samples with the labels food and plastic. To rank the performance of the 3888 trained networks, Fl-score, accuracy, precision, and recall are used as metrics. The best performing network reaches a Fl-score of 98.86\% proving that a differentiation of foods and plastics using a MLP classification based on FD- FLIM data is possible with a low error rate.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{LeiterSchwarzVersenetal.2024, author = {Leiter, Nina and Schwarz, Jonas and Versen, Martin and Risse, Michael and L{\"o}der, Martin G.J. and Laforsch, Christian}, title = {A non-destructive approach to wood origin differentiation using FD-FLIM}, series = {2024 IEEE Sensors Applications Symposium (SAS)}, booktitle = {2024 IEEE Sensors Applications Symposium (SAS)}, publisher = {IEEE}, doi = {10.1109/SAS60918.2024.10636550}, pages = {1 -- 6}, year = {2024}, abstract = {Wood auto-fluorescence, primarily attributed to lignin, presents a distinctive feature. Different wood species exhibit variations in lignin distribution. Frequency-Domain Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy is effective in distinguishing wood species based on their fluorescence characteristics. This study investigates the potential to differentiate the origins of beech, spruce, and larch through phase-dependent fluorescence decay times. Therefore the zero hypothesis H0 is tested: The phase dependent fluorescence lifetimes of samples from the same species but varying in origin are equal. To determine the fluorescence characteristics of woods of different origins, wood samples of the species Fagus sylvatica L. (beech), Larix decidua Mill. (larch), and Picea abies (L.) H. Karst. (spruce) from Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, New Zealand and Romania were analyzed. The wood samples were analyzed with a FD-FLIM camera setup, including a laser source emitting at an excitation wavelength of 445 nm. Employing Analysis-of-Variance hypothesis testing on fluorescence lifetime data for each wood species, the results indicate that 23 out of 35 origin pairs could be distinguished at a 5\% significance level. While acknowledging the challenges of origin-based differentiation, the findings emphasize the promising potential of fluorescence lifetime imaging microscope as a valuable tool in this context. Moving forward, a more intricate approach to sample differentiation should involve acquiring detailed information about the samples, including associated temperature and precipitation profiles, and soil composition.}, language = {en} } @article{KellnerUtz2024, author = {Kellner, Florian and Utz, Sebastian}, title = {An inverse optimization approach for studying sustainability preferences in sourcing decisions}, series = {Journal of Cleaner Production}, volume = {483}, journal = {Journal of Cleaner Production}, doi = {10.1016/j.jclepro.2024.144305}, year = {2024}, abstract = {Throughout many societies around the globe, there is growing awareness of the urgent need for the transition towards a sustainable economy. Research shows that buying firms have substantial leverage to initiate sustainable development by controlling the sustainable performance of their suppliers. In that context, this article presents a novel methodology based on inverse optimization to derive the implicit preferences of decision-makers in the trade-off between traditional sourcing objectives and sustainability in the supplier selection and order allocation process. The derived implicit preferences can then be used for further analyses to gain a better understanding of the characteristics of purchasing managers and sourcing situations that come with particularly high/low preferences placed on sustainability. Since the inverse optimization approach is computationally resource-intensive and consumes a significant amount of time, we present a scalable state-of-the-art cloud architecture that allows solving an arbitrary number of optimization programs in an acceptable amount of time. We demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed methodology in a real-world case. Here, data-driven machine learning methods can be a cornerstone, particularly for fault detection in district heating substations, where the availability of heat meter data keeps increasing. However, the creation of data sets suitable for training such machine learning models poses challenges to researchers and practitioners alike. To address this problem, we propose a systematic and domain-specific process for data set creation for fault detection in the form of practical guidelines. This process concretizes the data science and data mining cross-industry standard CRISP-DM for the district heating domain and focuses on the process steps of goal definition, data acquisition and understanding, and data curation. We aim to enable researchers and practitioners to create data sets for fault detection in the district heating domain and therefore also enable the creation or improvement of machine learning models in this domain. In addition, we propose a minimum viable feature set for fault detection in district heating networks with the goal of enabling better cooperation between researchers and easier transfer of the resulting machine learning models, to better proliferate new progress in the field.}, language = {en} } @misc{SchoenauSchoenauDaumeetal.2024, author = {Sch{\"o}nau, Maximilian and Sch{\"o}nau, Elisabeth and Daume, Darwin and Panhuysen, Markus and Schulze, Achim and H{\"u}ttl, Bernd and Landes, Dieter}, title = {Improved Sampling of IV Measurements}, series = {Proceedings of the 41st EU PVSEC}, journal = {Proceedings of the 41st EU PVSEC}, publisher = {Proceedings of the 41st EU PVSEC}, doi = {10.4229/EUPVSEC2024/3AV.3.50}, pages = {3}, year = {2024}, abstract = {The measurement of IV curves is the most important characterization technique of photovoltaic devices. This work seeks to determine a fair sampling rate for IV curves. Traditional sampling methods, such as using equidistant voltage steps, result in biased data by over- and undersampling the measurement at different voltages, which affect critical evaluations such as maximum power point (MPP) determination as well as series and shunt resistance estimation. Therefore, an adaptive sampling approach based on calculating the arc length of the IV curve is proposed, aiming to distribute data points equidistantly along the curve. This method is intended to provide a more balanced representation of the measurement data across all segments of the curve. The results indicate that using this adaptive approach, the measurement points can be significantly reduced at lower voltages while maintaining essential data density at key characteristics such as the MPP, facilitating faster and more accurate assessments.}, language = {en} } @article{KardasNickLueftl2024, author = {Kardas, Leopold and Nick, Carola and L{\"u}ftl, Katharina}, title = {„Das ist wirklich eine Gratwanderung": Schl{\"u}sselprobleme der Patientinnen- und Familienedukation zu technischen Assistenzsystemen in Sozial- und Gesundheitsberufen - eine Grounded Theory}, series = {Heilberufe Science}, journal = {Heilberufe Science}, doi = {10.1007/s16024-024-00419-8}, pages = {17}, year = {2024}, abstract = {Hintergrund Zwischen technischen Assistenzsystemen f{\"u}r die h{\"a}usliche Versorgung und ihren potenziellen Nutzer:innen bestehen h{\"a}ufig erhebliche Passungsprobleme.
