N2 - Forest ecosystems provide mankind with economic, social and environmental benefits called ecosystem goods and services. More often than not, some of these benefits are either mutually exclusive or come with negative impacts on the society or the environment. Hence, estimating the monetary value of these benefits is essential in decision making and policies on scarce natural resources. This thesis aims at estimating the monetary value of about 200 ha of the remaining Hambach forest which was once about 8,500 ha. In recent years, this forest has been the focus of numerous protests from environmentalists who believe that the German energy company RWE should not continue cutting down forest trees in order to extract its rich lignite reserves for electricity production. The environmentalists cite the loss of biodiversity and climate change as the base of their argument but fail to support this statement with an actual valuation study of the existing forest. On the contrary, RWE values the Hambach mine at €4 to €5 billion. In this light, this thesis makes a generous attempt at placing a monetary value on the 200 ha of Hambach forest using benefit transfer and meta-analysis as the main valuation techniques. Moreover, other techniques for a possible primary valuation project are elucidated. Besides, the social and environmental impacts of lignite mining are examined. Eventually, the obtained results are analyzed and discussed along with a concluding chapter on possible solutions and subsequent developments. Scientists found out that organizational culture has a significant impact on the success of organizations. Because of the fast-moving environment of companies, firms have to build up capabilities to react quickly to those environmental changes and adapt. Adapting means changing and as the culture of an organization is the fundamental base it has to change, too. Deduced from that development in science this paper investigates methods to change organizational culture and evaluates which of these methods are sensible to do so. The interventions Laboratory Training, Survey Feedback and Process Consultation are compared by assessing studies that tested the effect of those methods. The results of that comparison show that all three intervention types are useful to change organizational culture but for different cultural aspects and in different stages of the change process. Laboratory Training should be applied at the beginning of the change process in order to change attitude and strengthen the commitment to change. Survey Feedback should be used whilst developing the new culture to obtain feedback from employees and increase their involvement in the change process. Finally Process Consultation can support the implementation of the new culture in specific departments. Because these findings are mostly based on older studies, future research should focus on newer methods and explicit on methods to change culture. Fast pyrolysis has received considerable attention in the conversion of biomass into bio-oils which can be used for transportation fuel production. However, bio-oil produced from conventional fast pyrolysis has poor quality mainly due to its high amount of oxygenated compounds and requires upgrading before it can be used as transportation fuel. Catalytic upgrading is a prospective process in which oxygen can be removed from the bio-oil using a catalyst, which was studied in this paper. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the catalytic effects of six applied catalysts on the quality of the bio-oil derived from wheat/barley straw biomass. Fast pyrolysis of the biomass feedstock was performed in an ablative reactor at 550 ℃, and the pyrolysis vapors were led through a catalytic layer (at 400 ℃) in a second reactor for upgrading. Different properties were analyzed for evaluating the quality of the upgraded bio-oils, including water content (for calculating organic content), total acid number (TAN), higher heating value (HHV), elemental composition, and chemical composition. It was found that all catalysts, especially activated carbons (SC40 and SC44), reduced the tarry phase yield with increasing aqueous yield, resulting in the upgraded bio-oils with lower carbon and higher oxygen contents due to their catalytic activities. Moreover, the use of catalysts significantly reduced the sulfur content, making the final bio-oils more attractive due to the environmental concerns. SC40 was the best catalyst in increasing phenols yield and decreasing acids and ketones yields. The zeolite catalysts showed good selectivity to phenols production; the increasing load of nickel ions (Ni) on HZSM-5 slightly enhanced the formation of phenols and eliminated the formation of acids and ketones compared to unmodified HZSM-5. The upgraded bio-oil is still not qualified to be used as transportation fuels. However, it can be used as feedstock for producing specific chemicals in the modern refineries. Today, companies need to be capable to develop software with good usability to stay competitive. This can be achieved by practicing human-centred design (HCD) during the development process. However, especially small and medium-sized software enterprises (SMEs) still practice HCD on a low level, if at all. This thesis explores whether and how the approach of process capability assessment can support SMEs with a systematic improvement of HCD. It is shown that a process capability assessment for usability at SMEs can only be successful, when the first steps of initiating HCD are al-ready done. Then, a process assessment approach seems to be useful to systematically improve the usability capability at SMEs. Based on this theoretical background, a usability capability self-assessment tool tailored for SMEs is developed. It has a simplified assessment procedure and uses the DIN EN ISO 9241-220 as reference model. The self-assessment tool was applied at two German software SMEs to test whether the approach is useful for SMEs and whether the reference model is suitable. The results indicate that the usability self-assessment tool is a promising approach for future SMEs as several interesting applications were identified. The chosen reference model seems to be an appropriate choice for a self-assessment; only the complex language used in the standard impedes the assessment. All in all, the thesis lays the foundation for a systematic approach to support SMEs with usability. For instance; category “Automotive” is assigned to car manufacturer BMW AG. The classification allows the company to evaluate its revenue and profits on different customer segments which, in turn, has an impact on Schenker’s strategic planning. Until now the assignment is carried out manually which means that someone from sales department should perform some research on a customer’s public profile whenever a new customer is registered in the database. With the rapid growth of global trade in recent years and Schenker’s expansion to the Asian market with thousands of new customers the manual approach is no longer sustainable in a global market. This thesis provides an alternative solution based on scraping customer data available in the web and classification of the extracted content. We deal with three significant difficulties: find web data related to a given customer name (we do have a company name but no homepage URL in Schenker database), extract a predictive portion of the data without introducing too much noise and, finally, set up a classification algorithm. Most importantly, the whole process needs to be implemented automatically. For the classification task, we have identified two tree-based classification algorithms random forest and extreme gradient boosting (xgboost). Random forest performs better by using package ranger with an overall 52% accuracy and 87.8% multiclass area under the curve. On the other hand, xgboost takes less time to compute, but the accuracy is poor as compared to random forest. Ten participants without prior experience were introduced to a level 2 system and completed an on-road test drive session. Utilizing a mixed- methods approach including the Trust in Automation (TiA) questionnaire, verbal trust scores, and Facial Emotion Recognition (FER), trust in the system was measured at key milestones. TiA scores increased in a majority of participants, and a significant shift in the factor Reliability/Competence (p<0.05) was observed post-drive. According to FER scores, participants with a gain in TiA post-drive and those with a loss in TiA post-drive, more frequently displayed the emotions happy and angry, respectively. Results indicate that trust increases after a user’s first experience with ADAS and further that FER may be predictive of user trust in automation. This is due to demographic changes, which bring about an imbalance between eligible donors and possible future recipients. Hence, these changes pose a great challenge in meeting the demand for plasma and plasma-derived products in the future. As plasma cannot be synthesized, recipients depend on voluntary plasma donors. In order to ensure a sufficient supply of plasma considering the ongoing process of aging population, it is crucial to understand why people engage in donation behavior and which factors influence their decision to maintain the donor career. The current study investigates the determinants of plasma donation intention using an extended version of the theory of planned behavior. As the study is conducted in cooperation with Octapharma Plasma GmbH, a subsidiary of one of the largest worldwide operating providers for plasma preparations, the analysis is based on the company’s donors only. By using an online questionnaire, data of N = 1153 plasma donors is surveyed in order to examine the hypotheses. Multiple hierarchical regressions reveal significant predictors for plasma donation intention for all donors combined and also for both first-time and repeat plasma donors. Across all donor stages, self-efficacy turns out to be the predominant predictor for future donation intention. Moreover, the satisfaction with the last donation influences all groups of plasma donors in their decision of career maintenance. Therefore, organizations should pay attention to these components, developing strategies to enhance both donors’ self-efficacy and donation satisfaction. The aim is to predict the time series of the Appl Percentage (ApplPerc) from the workload manager of the z/OS mainframe system using SMF 72.3 and SMF 70.1 records as input. System Management Facility (SMF) data are binary log files that are used to collect system performance data and information about system behaviour. The SMFs show how Apache Spark can be used for the pre-processing. This includes data collection, data extraction, and data selection. The machine learning algorithms are implemented in R. The input SMF datasets will be split into training and test data, and thereby applied to different machine learning and deep learning models such as random forest regression, recurrent neural network, and k-nearest neighbor regression to predict the ApplPerc. Influencer marketing represents nowadays one of the most popular marketing strategies online. Given its significant expansion, it is necessary to gather a better comprehension of this widespread phenomenon. The present paper aims to explore the impact of influencer marketing on consumer behaviour in order to offer novel insights to the literature on influencer marketing and to provide the practitioners with meaningful knowledge in the domain. Specifically, the research investigates in-depth how this marketing strategy influences the consumer behaviour during the consumer decision making process and how factors of different nature such as influencers’ trustworthiness, consumers’ self-esteem and wishful identification as well as sales promotions affect their behaviour. This study applied an inductive, qualitative approach because of the exploratory nature of the research purpose. The empirical study was conducted by means of semi-structured interviews with ten young female adults from the Republic of Moldova. The interviews concentrated on respondents’ personal experiences and attitudes regarding influencer marketing and it researched particularly the beauty and fashion industries on Instagram. The findings of this study uncovered and explained the buying behaviour patterns of female consumers that appear as a result of influencer marketing influence throughout the consumer decision making process. Beyond this, the findings illustrate how different influencing factors shape the resultant consumer behaviour. Subsequently, appropriate theoretical and practical implications were derived. UX professionals are responsible for communicating user needs and UX requirements in a clear and understandable way so that other team members such as software developers can work in a user-centric way. The thesis examines known forms of requirements specification and identifies possible challenges in communicating user needs with the help of a systematic literature review. Based on design patterns, possible solutions for these problems are developed. In an interview study, these solution proposals are compared with real scenarios and adapted. As a result, the thesis presents nine guidelines that UX professionals can use to communicate user requirements. The idea is to promote a good exchange with the other team members and suitable, short forms of specification. A key point was that these should always convey a reason or the user’s motivation for a requirement to provide meaningful context information to those who have never been in touch with the user. Lockdown has been implemented in many countries to prevent the virus from spreading. Lockdown has prohibited people to go outside of their houses, closed industries and factories, and restricted air transportation and the free movement of vehicles, except emergency vehicles and flights. On the optimistic side, improvements in ambient air quality due to the lockdown have been reported across the world. This study evaluated ambient air quality by analyzing the PM2.5 concentrations monitored in 7 major cities of Nepal during March, April, and May of the years 2019 and 2020. Furthermore, meteorological data were also evaluated to investigate how meteorological conditions have affected Nepal’s ambient air quality during the investigation period. The monthly mean PM2.5 concentrations during March, April, and May 2020 were found to be lower in nearly all of the 7 cities of Nepal as compared to March, April, and May 2019. To some extent, a slightly higher amount of precipitation in March-May 2020 than during March-May 2019 supressed the ambient PM2.5 concentrations in 2020. But, since the highest decrease in PM2.5 concentration was found in Nepalgunj (72.78%) followed by Kathmandu (46.2%) during May 2020 as compared to May 2019 and thus, the highest differences between 2019 and 2020 were found for the cities with the highest contribution of transport emissions to PM2.5 in ambient air, the COVID-19 lockdown might have contributed to the lower PM2.5 concentrations in 2020. On the other hand, it can be assumed that one of the major primary sources of PM2.5, biomass burning (both the residential use and natural forest fires), was not affected by the lockdown, but biomass burning might be the reason for the increment of PM2.5 concentrations found at some sites, in particular in the Kathmandu Valley, and for the only subtle decrease at other sites during the lockdown. In essense, though it is an unfortunate situation, the lockdown provided a glimpse of the situation how effective improvements in the environmental conditions could be if we were to introduce large scale mitigation measures swiftly. This quote sums up most of the current thoughts on the phenomenon of a ground-breaking invention from 2008 by Satoshi Nakamoto since a major part of the world’s population is still missing out on sophisticated knowledge about it. Especially in times of digitalization, it is of enormous value to be informed about current developments in technology. This thesis aims to evaluate the future development of money, especially if Bitcoin has the potential to totally replace conventional currencies. Furthermore, the strengths and shortcomings of Bitcoin will be discussed. It also reaches to determine characteristics for a currency’s long-term success and which of those characteristics are fulfilled by Bitcoin. To answer the research question if Bitcoin has the potential to be an alternative currency and to test the developed hypotheses, pertinent literature is reviewed and an empirical study consisting of expert interviews which are examined using a qualitative structured content analysis method, are conducted. Afterwards, the results are critically discussed. The results of this thesis reveal that Bitcoin has the potential to become an alternative currency because it fulfills most of the criteria a currency needs to meet to be successful in the long run. Furthermore, it is evident that Bitcoin still faces vast barriers and needs to overcome enormous obstacles, which shifts the time horizon for becoming a success somewhere in the farther future. Additionally, apart from the development of cryptocurrencies, it is shown that money in general, will flow much more digitally in the short run. The loss i.e., the decrease of biodiversity, does not only have negative effects on vegetation and animals, but also on humans. If nature is doing well, people are doing well. In order to counteract the loss, this bachelor thesis attempts to increase plant and insect biodiversity at a specific location with insect-friendly seed mixtures and by measuring the change using comparison areas. Accordingly, the two research questions were addressed: (1) "How does plant-biodiversity change in the backyard and front yard on the seed mixture plot compared to plant-biodiversity in the backyard and front yard next to the seed mixture plot?" and (2) "How does insect-biodiversity change in the backyard and front yard on the seed mixture plot compared to insect-biodiversity in the backyard and front yard next to the seed mixture plot?" To answer these research questions and to obtain more suitable data, a wildflower strip was established in the backyard and one in the front yard, each with an adjacent reference field, to ensure equal environmental conditions and to detect changes in flora and fauna. Plants and insects were observed and documented during the flowering period in order to determine differences in biodiversity sizes afterwards. The comparison of the different biodiversity sizes shows that an increase in insect and plant biodiversity can be achieved by planting insect-friendly wildflower strips. As the increase of plant biodiversity also leads to the increase of insect biodiversity. Further research in the field of biodiversity enhancement could be done by collecting more measurement points of the coefficients at additional locations to extend the data set and to improve the applied method of this bachelor thesis. Therefore, the concept of board compensation is outlined, the phenomenon of APM is defined, and the main points of scholarly interest in both subject areas are addressed. Through reviewing existing literature that investigates the use of APM within board compensation systems, the rationale for their use and the associated (dis-)advantages are determined. It is shown that the use of APM in board compensation can lead to greater alignment between board members and shareholders’ interests, in-crease sensitivity of pay to performance, and improve the information content of APM published elsewhere. However, using APM can also lead to excessive pay, which may be a result of managerial opportunism. Strong corporate governance mechanisms ap-pear to be relevant for ensuring an appropriate use of APM in compensation systems. The use of APM within board compensation schemes of large German stock-listed com-panies in the fiscal year 2019 is investigated empirically. The relevance of such measures is found to be high, and they determine a large portion of total variable pay. The specific APM used within compensation schemes and those disclosed in annual reports are partially divergent, especially when it comes to growth-related, capital effi-ciency-related, and capital structure-related measures. Nonetheless, APM used in com-pensation systems are identified as a subgroup of APM disclosed in the annual report. In this study, three main analytical techniques were used to comprehensively analyse the urban surface water quality. Luminescent bacteria test is a rapid and sensitive bioassay for acute toxicity determination in water. Through the inhibition rate of bacteria, the toxicity of water quality is reflected in a short-term. In this study, Vibrio fischeri bioassay was used to determine the toxicity in urban surface water. However, when the luminescence results of samples have only a slight difference, AAS and TOC can be used as sensitive chemical analytical techniques. atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) can analyse the heavy metal concentration and total organic carbon (TOC) can determine the organic contamination in water. AAS and TOC can quantitatively and qualitatively analyse chemical parameters. In the study, although each technique has a certain limitation, the combination of these three experiments can be detailed explain the cause of toxicity of urban surface water. Therefore, the advantage of these three methods which are fast, highly sensitive, and easy to operate, makes the analysis of water quality more efficiently. In this study, the water samples were analysed after filtration. In case the toxicity being related to substances sorbed to the suspended matter has a significant effect on water quality, it is necessary to conduct unfiltered experiments in future research. The application of artificial intelligence is becoming popular in diverse domains, making its role in gas transport networks more and more interesting. The opposite interest of the players in the network is the reason behind the thought of establishing a game analogy here. The agents as players act on the basis of the opponent’s action. Nevertheless, it is still considered an abstract concept for a great majority of the population. Energy is also responsible for most of the environmental problems we are facing nowadays, therefore, we require more than ever, and by any necessary means, to bring this concept closer to our daily life, not only from a dimension of knowledge, also from those related to our behavior and attitude towards it. This study aims to explore Virtual Reality social platforms as a promising means of communication to address environmental issues. More specifically, to understand their potential to generate participation cultures around serious issues, understanding participation culture as the set of activities, through which people collectively shape a space for expression and learning. For this purpose, a research was conducted analyzing three Virtual Reality social apps (VRChat, Rec Room, and AltSpaceVR) to identify —under the perspective of Jenkins’ Convergence Culture— the existing activities and behaviors shaping participatory cultures inside of the platforms. However, Platinum is an extremely expensive material. Therefore, increasing loading could contribute to the price significantly. The aim of this work is to measure the proton exchange membrane fuel cell performance under three different catalyst loading on cathode and determine the optimum loading for performance in these three tested loading levels. The tested cathodic loadings are 0.3 mg/cm2, 0.6 mg/cm2 and 0.9 mg/cm2. By applying two methods: current-voltage measurement and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, the open circuit voltages, polarization, power output and impedance were recorded. From the experiment, it is found that the internal resistance decreased with increasing Platinum loadings on the cathode. The simulation results indicate this change is mostly contributed by decreasing cathodic resistance. With increasing cathodic Platinum loading, the cathodic resistance decreases. It is also found during experiments, the polarization, open circuit voltage and power performance first increased and then stayed at same level. These indicators showed best performance at 0.6 mg/cm2 cathodic loading level. Combined with simulation results, the large impedance value of constant phase element in equivalent model for 0.9 mg/cm2 loading is considered as the reason why the power performance stop improving. Nepal is among the countries most affected by both indoor and outdoor PM2.5 pollution in the world. This thesis is based on the recent lockdown that happened in Nepal during the pandemic of COVID-19 in 2020. This study investigates the impact of lockdown on PM2.5 emission based on the assessment of emission inventories. The annual data for PM2.5 emission was extracted from EDGAR (Emissions Database for Global Atmospheric Research) and then the extrapolation was done to calculate the assumed PM2.5 emission for 2019 and 2020 using linear regression. The assumed nationwide monthly emission ercentage was used to calculate the PM2.5 emission during lockdown months. The PM2.5 sources affected during the lockdown were identified and their assumed percentage contribution (6.18%) was used to calculate the emission during lockdown month. The ambient air PM2.5 concentration data was extracted from the official websites of the government of Nepal. The lockdown months were compared with the preceding year's same month and the percentage change was calculated. The study suggested that in 2020 the PM2.5 emission rate for April was reduced by 4.68% and for May it was reduced by 4.85% whereas during an assumed 'no lockdown‘ year, all the months would have had an increase in PM2.5 emission by ~1.6%. The concentration of PM2.5 for March was educed by 14.65%, similarly, for April it was reduced by 13.96% and for May it was reduced by 50.92%. The comparison of the percentage change of both the PM2.5 emission and concentration shows that the decrease in concentration was much higher compared to the reduction in emission due to the lockdown. The monthly assessment of PM2.5 during the lockdown suggested that the percentage change in emission of PM2.5 was minor compared to the change in the concentration of PM2.5 which might be due to different reasons including meteorology, underestimation of the contribution of some emission sectors by the emission inventories and the fact that the emission inventories are set up for the whole country whereas the PM2.5 concentration data are collected with monitoring stations located in cities close to major PM2.5 sources. It is unimaginable not being able to communicate around the world nowadays. It is not trivial to find suitable legal grounds for transferring data out of the European Union. The European Commission must declare a country as safe to be able to transfer data in this specific country. It is necessary to follow this principle not to violate any data protection laws. Since the 16th of July 2020 it is not allowed to transfer any data into the United States using the “Privacy Shield” as a legal safeguard due to the judgment of the European Court. There are still methods for legitimizing data transfers such as ”Binding Corporate Rules (BCR’s)” or “Standard contractual clauses”. Those well-known legal safeguards are only available for transferring data into the United States if “additional measures” were taken according to the European Court. To this day no official instance announced what those “additional measures” could be. This bachelor thesis will analysis the problems a possible “additional measure” must face. To achieve this goal the method of literature review will be used. Many older and newer professional article, books, laws and jurisprudence will be researched and analysed to an- ticipate the needs for a “additional measure”. A Simulation Study N2 - By 2030 the share of road freight transport in the European Union is expected to grow by 33% according to the Joint Research Center of the European Commission. However, today trucks are already usually confronted with long wait times at warehouses and similar facilities which lengthen the circulation time of trucks. A commonly identified cause for this is the lack of information and communication exchange between the trucks and the logistics facilities. To improve the information and communication exchange between trucks and warehouses to reduce the circulation and waiting time the use of modern information technologies is recommended. One of those modern information technologies is called geofencing and deals with the tracking of objects in defined geographic areas. This research aims to measure the influence that the implementation of geofencing technology has on the handling process of trucks at warehouses regarding the reduction of circulation and waiting time. A quantitative study in form of a computer simulation simulating the handling process of trucks at warehouses is performed to accomplish that. The results of this research showed that the application of geofencing to the handling process has a significant impact on the reduction of circulation and waiting time. However, analyzing these results showed that the extent of that reduction is dependent on the structure of the handling process at the warehouse as well as the distribution of waiting time throughout the handling process. N2 - This paper investigates the impact of the Corona pandemic on M&A activities considering the variables M&A volume, M&A value, GDP, and Covid figures. The aim is to analyze the relationships between the development of the pandemic and M&A activities in five European countries (Germany, the UK, France, Italy, and Spain). With an introduction to the literature published so far on the topic, an excellent introduction to the situations around Corona and the M&A market is already offered. The one or other outlooks are already scientifically proven here and have thus also been very for the following analyses and results. In the first step of the research, we analyze M&A volumes and values in the countries under consideration before and during the pandemic. It can be seen that the number of M&A transactions increased overall during the pandemic, but transaction values were very fluctuating in comparison. This observation certainly reflects the general uncertainties and economic challenges of the pandemic. The next step is correlating Covid figures, M&A activity, and GDP. This shows that the pandemic outbreak led to a short-lived decline in M&A activity, as companies acted more cautiously and held back on transactions due to the uncertainty. However, M&A activity rose again as the economic situation in the countries stabilized, and companies were better able to respond to the pandemic. In addition, the impact of GDP on M&A activity is also examined. It can be seen that GDP was affected in all countries due to lockdowns and restrictions on public life. Nevertheless, there was some resilience in the economy as GDP showed an increase in all countries despite the pandemic. The analysis of the correlation between the variables shows that there is a significant relationship between Covid numbers and M&A activity. The higher the Covid numbers were in a country, the more M&A activity was affected. This suggests that the development of the pandemic had a significant impact on M&A activity. Overall, this work shows that the Corona pandemic significantly impacted M&A activity in Europe. The uncertainty and economic challenges led to a short-lived decline in activity, but the overall number of deals increased. The correlation analysis highlights the links between the pandemic and M&A activity and underscores the importance of thoroughly examining the variable factors influencing M&A decisions under Corona conditions. Human health and welfare depend on ecosystem functions and services which are interchangeably connected to biodiversity. Amphibians are one of the most sensitive and vulnerable species to anthropogenic impacts, because of their fast reactions to changing conditions in their surroundings they are often referred to as bioindicator species. Since year 2016 an amphibian population located in the district of Wesel in North-Rhine-Westphalia in Germany experiences drastic changes in population size and composition. To find out if anthropogenic impacts may influence the development of the amphibian population, different methods for assessing the population and biodiversity are used. Data was collected from year 2017 to 2023 with the help of a drift fence with pitfall traps. The amphibian population is evaluated regarding population size, age structure, sex ratio and migration behaviour. Additionally, biodiversity indices are used for a quantitative and qualitative analysis. As last step, the amphibian population is compared to another amphibian population with similar preconditions, but experiencing less anthropogenic pressure. A high reduction of population size and changes in age and sex composition were found for the assessed amphibian population. Moreover, the migration behaviour alternates over time. The found results strongly indicate that the main cause of the negative development is a high anthropogenic pressure. Further intensive conservation and monitoring actions are needed, to restore the amphibian population and avoid the complete destruction. N2 - The aim of this Bachelor Thesis is to investigate the relationships between environmental attitudes and other factors influencing pro-environmental behavior. For this purpose, the data of 210 participants was examined by means of a quantitative online survey. In this study, the short scale UGK-V of the SEU-3 with 21 items was used. It contains seven content scales and measures the constructs attitude, behavioral intention, and self-reported behavior. In addition, three items were used to measure awareness of action consequences. Significant correlations are found between the environment-related constructs. Attitude correlates strongest with behavioral intention. The postulated hypotheses can be confirmed, though this result is of limited accuracy due to the low reliability of self-reported behavior. It was possible to show a relationship between awareness of action consequences and the total scale, as well as all the subscales. This correlates the most with environmental awareness. The hypothesized correlation (H4) represented the smallest correlation, suggesting that awareness of action consequences may be associated with attitude rather than behavior. Causality cannot be established, so the different aspects may influence each other. Interaction cannot be ruled out either. Inconsistent definitions of the constructs in addition to an insufficiently representative sample make a generalization to any population difficult. The results can be compared with the values of the original sources and show valid survey instruments. Analyzing data from 94 respondents via hierarchical linear regression analysis, several significant relationships were identified. In general, leader behavior has a strong positive impact on team processes. Furthermore, task-oriented leaders have the greatest positive influence on action processes, while relation-oriented leaders have the greatest positive influence on interpersonal processes. As floods cannot be prevented, understanding the pattern and causes and being able to forecast could significantly reduce the losses during the flood. In July 2021, Germany faced a catastrophic flood, taking more than 180 people’s lives and causing around 40 billion euros of economic loss. The effects of diminishing green spaces, increasing sealed spaces, and higher summer temperatures are particularly noticeable in built-up and urban areas. The constant use of land and development means that insect habitats, which are essential to a functioning ecosystem, are being lost. But this development is not only problematic for insects: increased sealing also increases the potential risk of the heat island effect, which poses a threat to human health. One possible solution for providing habitat and food for insects in urban areas could be green façade systems. These could partially restore ecosystem services lost to development and have a positive effect on ambient temperature through shading of the building and evaporation from the plants. In order to measure this effect of façade greening on the environment, in particular on insect diversity and insect population, this work measured the number of insects using two different counting methods over several days on two external façades, one with façade greening and one without. In addition, to determine the effect of the green façade on the ambient temperature, the temperature was measured at different parts of the façades at both measurement locations. The result of the work is that the façade with plants has a significantly higher insect biodiversity and insect density than the façade without plants. N2 - The present work examines the development of propaganda based on the progression of mass media in the 20th century and the switch to digital media around the year 2000. Beginning with the description of books, the mass media of the last century is described chronologically up to the topic of television. Historical events are associated with the use of propaganda. With the onset of the digital age, the scope of propaganda methods is shifting from the analogue to the digital world. The risks on the internet of these processes are highlighted. Particularly outstanding is the speed and accessibility of large groups of people with the help of networks. By democratizing the internet with the help of the participatory web, users can be targeted using algorithms and artificial intelligence-driven social bots. The dangers of filter bubbles and echo-chambers, which can lead to radicalization, are discussed. Proposals to curb the exploitation of social networks for propaganda purposes through the dissemination of fake news and conspiracy narratives are laid out to users, institutions, governments and tech companies. Gamebased Learning through Gamification can serve as a softer alternative to introduce and familiarize learners with, although due to technical limitations, games do not completely replace reliable passive learning methods of learning such as books, lectures, and field practices. The aim of Project Nitratscouts is to develop educational modules concerning Nitrate infiltration from agricultural soils such as the groundwater boardgame, which facilitates learning about nitrate in groundwater, compliance with environmental quality standards, animal husbandry and manure as fertilizer, while also introducing them to agricultural decision-making regarding crop production. The tool offers several ways for playing, enabling players to perceive underlying the issue of Nitrate in groundwater from different perspectives. The tool was tested with 44 participants, in 17 single and 8 competitive game modes. Feedback was collected through survey results, performance evaluation cards, and participants’ verbal remarks and comments. The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to test the methods adopted to create the tool, describe feedback observations on collection by evaluating the learning effect about conflicts of interest based on quantitative and qualitative analyses of quantitative survey responses, performance evaluation cards, examine similarities of verbal feedback and cluster it into groups regarding multiple aspects such as relevance of random events, design and acquired perspective on conflict of interest, and discuss lessons from received feedback. Schlüsselwörter: Gruppenstimmung, Vertrautheit, Teamvertrauen, Längsschnittdesign N2 - A widely used approach to improving performance is teamwork, whereby people can be influenced and benefit from various factors when working together. However, as collaboration becomes more diverse and complex, the aim of the thesis is to investigate the relationship between selected factors critical to success in order to contribute to more effective team composition. This raises the research question of how the constructs of familiarity, team trust and group affective tone are related. Therefore, a longitudinal study was conducted with psychology students. The students completed an online questionnaire at three measurement points. In the end, a data set of N = 134 was recorded. In order to aggregate the data at group level, the rwg and the ICC (1) and ICC (2) were calculated. However, the requirement for data aggregation was not met, which is why the statistical data analysis had to be carried out at individual level. The intra- and interpersonal correlations of the constructs were examined using the correlation for repeated measures and linear regression. Familiarity was found to be positively related to trust and positive affecctive tone. It was also found that a positive affective tone favors the level of trust. In addition, a mediation was carried out to work out the significance of positive affective tone on the relationship between familiarity and trust. The results confirm the assumed realationships and show the importance of familiarity and positive affective tone. Practical and theoretical implications are discussed. The concept comes from data visualization, except for in a physicalization the data is presented as 3D tangible objects. Research shows that physical representation of data and being able to interact with it improve understanding and memorability of data, which supports the embodied cognition thesis, according to which cognition is supported by the body and the physical world and developmental psychology research, suggesting that manipulation of physical objects can promote understanding and learning. Alongside traditional physicalizations of statistical data, there also exist physicalizations of personal data, for example heartrate patterns, DNA data, one’s emotional states during the course of the week, etc. Research shows that such physicalizations, often embodied into everyday objects to promote familiarity and intuitive interaction, stimulate self-reflection as well as social interactions by telling others the stories behind the data. Some researchers thought about using data physicalizations as gifts and created example of such gifting artifacts. However, the design process of these artifacts was not based on the user research; nor were the physicalization gifts evaluated in any way. This is the gap that we are addressing in this master thesis, and the goal of our project was therefore to create and evaluate a personal data physicalization present using the human centered design approach. We started our work by conducting user research: performing interviews and defining the important characteristics of the future physicalisation gift. It was followed by a brainstorming session of possible design solutions and creation of the prototype. The prototype was then tested with users, addressing understandability of the data presented in the physicalisation and subjective perception of the gift. Our documentation of the findings and the research process provides a new step in the research of personal data physicalisations and lays out new topics for future investigations. Within the context of Zechenpark, formerly known as the Bergwerk West, in Kamp-Lintfort and the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord as case studies, these locations serve as prime examples of reclamation efforts. Both locations now stand as emblematic sites undergoing transformation from industrial ruins to ecologically vibrant zones. The plant species composition of the biodiversity plots of the 2022 Sowing Campaign (Einsaat-Aktion 2022) by the Förderverein Landesgartenschau (LaGa) were analyzed using biodiversity indices, as well as the species composition of Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord. A statistically significant correlation was observed between the number of individuals of flowering plants and the number of insects in Zechenpark, as determined by Spearman's rank correlation coefficient (Rs = 0.75, p < 0.05). This study offers valuable insights that could contribute to enhancing plant diversity within urban parks, thereby supporting the advancement of sustainable urban development. However, it is associated with a lot of new challenges for e-commerce businesses, particularly in understanding and managing the customer behavior patterns with the rising online product returns. Since the accessibility of online shopping has risen, assessing the critical factors related to product return and prediction has become a really challenging task for e-commerce vendors. This study also aims to segment the customers based on customer behavior prediction into two categories, i.e., high return risk and low return risk customers, and further develop strategies to reduce the online returns. This study is rather structured into four integral parts, where each part provides the comprehensive analysis. The first aspect involves analyzing and identifying the customer behavior patterns leading to product returns. The second aspect predicts the online product return based on selected features and the third is to segment the customers based on online product return prediction and categorize them into high return risk, and low return risk customers. The final step involves development of strategies to reduce the product return based on the intense analysis conducted. To achieve this meaningful research outcome, data analysis is conducted to understand the customer behavior patterns, and a Random Forest feature selector is used to identify the customer behavior patterns that lead to product return. Based on the identified features, classification models were applied to classify and predict whether the customer is going to return product or not. Furthermore, in these seven classification models such as Logistic Regression, Ada Boost, Decision Tree, Naive Bayes, XG Boost, K-Nearest Neighbors, and Random Forest were implemented and used to compare the performance of the classification models to find out the best performing model. Lastly, the segmentation of customers is carried out based on the online product prediction using Logistic regression with classification threshold method into high return risk and low return risk customer categories. The results obtained help in understanding the customer behavior and reduce the online product return by developing the strategies. This study will eventually help the online businesses in reducing returns which will also enhance the customer satisfaction. Despite the fact that groundwater is frequently abundant and widely utilized, it is difficult and costly to precisely estimate water levels when compared to surface water systems. Groundwater managers require improved digital tools to understand the system state of the aquifers they seek to interact with sustainably (e.g., accessing real-time updates on the state of the water table to check whether pumping operation is achieving or violating a desired drawdown target.) Here we propose a workflow for a pilot region that (a) temporally interpolates irregularly, manually-measured water levels in a real observation network using data from neighboring sensor-equipped observation, using a multiple linear regression approach to reduce complexity. The resulting interpolated time series are then used in conjunction with the sensor data to come up with (b) spatial interpolations of the groundwater field over time using inversed distance weighting (IDW) at any given point in time. From that, spatial estimates of the groundwater field can be transformed into maps of deviation from drawdown targets. We visualize these targets and their temporal evolution for groundwater managers in real-time on a web application. The web application displays these maps together with operational data (e.g., extraction rates) and meteorological data (recent and forecasted precipitation rates). It serves as a foundational tool for groundwater management when making control decisions to save energy in climate change mitigation and to reduce costs. However, these objects were never meant for good, but rather instruments of colonial control. Over time, the local population adopted their names into everyday language, turning them into loanwords. Today, while most traces of the colonial era have faded, these loanwords persist. This raises a crucial question: Do loanwords serve as remnants of colonialism? And what role can a designer play in reclaiming them? The custom board in this project, referred to as the USB2LORA board, is a printed circuit board (PCB) that integrates a FT232H USB 2.0 high-speed chip with a wireless LoRa transceiver. The primary objective of this thesis is to investigate how effective USB sniffer is in debugging and analyzing USB traffic between a USB device and a USB host, verifying the USB traffic against the standard, and detecting potential anomalies in communication. Using the USB sniffer, I successfully captured the essential USB communication processes, including the host’s recognition of the USB2LORA boards, retrieval of its configuration details, and the exchange of control commands and data between the USB2LORA boards and the USB host. During the recognition phase, the host requested and retrieved information about the USB2LORA board, containing its configuration, the type of data it can send and receive, and details about the buffers used to store or prepare the data during USB transmission. In subsequent data exchange phases, the results show that the host effectively sent control commands to configure the USB chip and to initiate communication with the wireless transceiver. The observed USB traffic aligned well with the USB standard and confirmed the correct behavior of the USB2LORA boards. Overall, the incorporation of a USB sniffer into the development and verification process of a custom USB board allows effective debugging of USB traffic and ensures adherence to the USB specification. Moreover, it enables developers to confirm the expected behavior of their software and their USB peripheral board as well as detect any anomalies in the communication. Y1 - 2025 ER - TY - THES A1 - Helou, Ziad T1 - Opportunities and challenges for the solar industry in Lebanon. N2 - Lebanon faces a significant energy crisis characterized by unreliable electricity supply, political instability, and outdated infrastructure. This thesis explores the potential of solar energy as a sustainable solution to address these challenges, focusing on economic, technical, and regulatory barriers while drawing comparative insights from Cyprus’s renewable energy model. The research examines three primary questions regarding the economic and technical challenges hindering solar energy adoption in Lebanon, the lessons that can be learned from Cyprus to inform solutions, and the comprehensive strategies that can support the development of Lebanon’s solar energy sector. The findings reveal that while Lebanon has experienced rapid growth in solar energy adoption, the sector is undermined by systemic issues such as low-quality imports, skill gaps, insufficient grid infrastructure, and the dominance of diesel generators. Comparative analysis with Cyprus underscores the importance of robust regulatory frameworks, financial accessibility, public-private partnerships, and accreditation systems for solar installers. Additionally, the analysis highlights the critical role of improving capacity factors in Lebanon, with findings showing that even a 1% increase could supply power to over 16,000 homes, emphasizing the potential efficiency gains for Lebanon’s solar energy sector. The thesis also evaluates Lebanon’s progress toward its 2030 renewable energy targets, noting that while the country appears to have met these targets in percentage terms, the achievement is largely a result of reduced electricity generation rather than genuine renewable capacity growth. Recommendations include enforcing quality standards, establishing national accreditation systems, addressing corruption, and leveraging international funding for infrastructure modernization and workforce development. This research emphasizes that Lebanon’s transition to renewable energy is not only a technical and economic endeavor but also a pathway to greater energy independence and environmental sustainability. Profit shifting, tax avoidance, deductions, and exemptions in current international tax practices have contributed to lower tax revenues worldwide, splitting the consideration of corporate tax rates into two: statutory vs effective. In light of this, this thesis examines the relationship between corporate taxation and social inequality. The effects of statutory and effective tax rates on both income and wealth inequality (measured by their respective Gini-coefficients) are compared. A panel data regression model was carried out using SPSS. The model was applied to a selection of 10 OECD countries, spanning over a 6-year period from 2017 to 2022. The regression model indicates a significant relationship between income inequality (income Gini-coefficient) and the two corporate tax rates (estimates of -0.332 for statutory and -0.311 for effective). However, a significant relationship between wealth inequality (wealth Gini-coefficient) and the two tax rates was not identified. In addition, limitations regarding heteroscedasticity, potential endogeneity issues, and the small data set were addressed in detail but not completely ruled out. Implications include the effectiveness of progressive corporate taxation as a redistributive tool in the case of income inequality and the investigation of alternative taxes for tackling wealth inequality. The need for policies that push for easier attainment of data on wealth inequality is crucial for future research on the matter. Two methods for determining the system temperature are described here: the hot/cold-method and the derivation from the radiometer equation using measurement data from a source with a known brightness temperature, in this case, S7. Both methods deliver different results, depending on the measurements and assumptions on which they are based. The results show that the data basis and uncertainties should always be considered when analysing the observational data to be able to evaluate the results correctly. Overall, the telescope is quite suitable for educational observations, especially of the 21-cm line of neutral hydrogen. Furthermore, instructions have been created for the various tasks so that the results are reproducible and comprehensible. The entire process is made transparent, from planning the observations and setting up the telescope to measuring and analysing the data. In addition, basic concepts of radio astronomy are described in theory to provide valuable background knowledge. On this basis, the use of the telescope enables students and amateur astronomers to understand and apply the basic principles of radio astronomy and to plan and carry out their own observations. The destabilisation mechanisms, flotation rate acceleration, and segregation of phases in the system undergo considerable improvement through CO2 microbubbles formation. The ability to effectively separate and isolate aqueous and oil phases is important for treating industrial wastewater, hence optimizing waste reduction and resource recovery. The laboratory studies explore various operational parameters, such as CO₂ consumption efficiency, pressure variations, and residence time, in order to optimize splitting in various emulsion mixtures. The studies proved to effectively provide up to 95% total organic carbon (TOC) reduction, particularly achieved in combination with prolonged flotation and settling. Significantly, treatment by CO2-induced separations proved to have most efficiency in synthetic Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SDS)-based emulsions and in industrial scenarios such as in cooling lubricants. In addition, prolonging flotation time to an overnight timeframe significantly increased TOC reduction in the case of the SDS emulsion. The presented results offer a new look over the experimental development of separation technologies, demonstrating the effective splitting of emulsions by injecting CO2 without additional pressure input and thus its feasibility in an industrial setting. In addition to providing a chemical-free separation alternative, this method offers the advantage of reduced energy input and the potential for CO2 recapture and reuse as well as oil recovery.
