TY - THES A1 - Just, Leon T1 - Using Geofencing to Reduce Circulation and Waiting Time of Trucks at Warehouses. A Simulation Study N2 - By 2030 the share of road freight transport in the European Union is expected to grow by 33% according to the Joint Research Center of the European Commission. However, today trucks are already usually confronted with long wait times at warehouses and similar facilities which lengthen the circulation time of trucks. A commonly identified cause for this is the lack of information and communication exchange between the trucks and the logistics facilities. To improve the information and communication exchange between trucks and warehouses to reduce the circulation and waiting time the use of modern information technologies is recommended. One of those modern information technologies is called geofencing and deals with the tracking of objects in defined geographic areas. This research aims to measure the influence that the implementation of geofencing technology has on the handling process of trucks at warehouses regarding the reduction of circulation and waiting time. A quantitative study in form of a computer simulation simulating the handling process of trucks at warehouses is performed to accomplish that. The results of this research showed that the application of geofencing to the handling process has a significant impact on the reduction of circulation and waiting time. However, analyzing these results showed that the extent of that reduction is dependent on the structure of the handling process at the warehouse as well as the distribution of waiting time throughout the handling process.
