The gamification of food is experimented with, mainly for recreational purposes. But it could also be used to achieve a different goal. In this work, an approach to motivating children to eat and like vegetables more is explored. First, the basic perception of vegetables by children is examined and various ideas for games are explored with Cooperative Inquiry. These can be grouped into three categories: building, challenge and randomness. Possible prototypes have been discussed in form of text. A building game has been tested and it had a positive effect on the perception of vegetables of the participating children. However, only few children were available to work with, making further studies necessary. However, many skeptical voices arise regarding impact investing, because some issues hinder the growth the impact investing market (Gray et al., 2015, p.3). Regulatory intervention is needed to overcome the persisting challenges (Martin, 2013, p.18). Therefore, a literature review was undertaken in order to give an overview of existing regulatory measures and initiatives that have been implemented in different regions to foster the growth of the impact investing market, especially in the light of the taxonomy that was recently proposed by the EU. The literature review revealed that many regulations and initiatives have been established across the world, however the regulatory environment regarding impact investing is currently fragmented. Therefore, it is important that governments collaborate to uniformize regulations on a global level. Furthermore, this paper aims to find out how impact funds perform financially in comparison to conventional funds. In order to answer that question a performance analysis, using the Sharpe Ratio as a performance indicator, was conducted. The performance analysis indicated that impact funds perform slightly better than conventional funds. The result goes in line with existing studies that have analyzed the performance of impact investments. This paper indicates that impact investments can compete with conventional investments, but that there is still a lot to be done to bring the market to scale. Y1 - 2020 ER - TY - THES A1 - Li, Shiwei T1 - Influence of long-term organic and conventional farming on soil microbial properties N2 - In order to find out how different farming system influence microbial biomass and therefore influence the long-term soil fertility and soil quality, this study analyzed the impacts of conventional integrated and organic farming systems on soil microbiological parameters using soil samples from the DOK long-term field experiment (Switzerland). Farmyard manure fertilizer is applied to bio-dynamic (D), bio-organic (O) and conventional farming system (K) with two different intensities. Besides, there are a conventional mineral fertilizer received system (M) and an unfertilized control plot (U). The chloroform fumigation extraction (CFE) method and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) test were applied for detection and quantification of soil microbial biomass along with some other tests in physical, chemical and biological aspects. Soil pH tends to increase by applying farmyard manure. Metabolic quotient (qCO 2 ) revealed a lower level in the manured system though there was no significant difference between conventional and organic system. On one hand, D treatment achieved the highest values regarding microbial biomass carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus, and the highest gene copies number of detected microbial domains. On the other hand, higher concentration of microbial biomass sodium, potassium, manganese, silicon, nickel and zinc were found in M and K system. Contrary to expectation, the soil organic matter content between different treatments had only a little difference. In general, each tested soil quality parameter was affected by the type and quantity of fertilizer used to a different extent, among which the soil microbiological parameters showed more pronounced difference compared with soil physical parameter, pH and soil organic matter content. In short, organic farming system had greater potential to maintain soil fertility and improve soil quality than conventional farming system in the long term; while the comparison between two organic systems emphasized the beneficial influence from applying compost manure and bio-dynamic additives. Y1 - 2020 ER - TY - THES A1 - Ranganathan, Shraddha T1 - Evaluation of two methods to reduce legume-related flatulence through enzymatic digestion of flatulence factors N2 - Legumes are nutritionally equivalent to many meat products, and can be used to supplement or replace meat in daily diets. This is beneficial for a variety of reasons, such as: i) growing legumes can help to reduce acidification of soil, global warming potential and energy use; ii) livestock is taxing on the environment in terms of adding to the volume of greenhouse gases and nitrification of soil while legume crops fix soil nitrogen. Consumers can be opposed to adding legumes to their diet due to the perception of legumes causing flatulence. Intestinal gas buildup, bloating, cramps, abdominal pain and flatulence are caused by raffinose family oligosaccharides (RFOs) which cannot be digested in monogastric organisms such as humans. They are therefore broken down by microflora in the intestine; this bacterial digestion releases large volumes of hydrogen, which causes flatulence. The human body lacks the enzyme required to break down these RFOs — ⍺-galactosidase. This experiment evaluated two methods of applying ⍺-galactosidase to RFOs before they reach the intestinal microflora. The first method evaluates the effectiveness of enzymatically digesting the legumes before consumption. The second evaluates the effectiveness of the enzyme supplement Beano, which applies the enzyme to RFOs in the stomach. Experimental data showed that enzymatically digesting raw flours does significantly reduce the amount of RFOs in the legume. Similarly, Beano also reduces RFOs significantly. In 4 out of the 6 legumes sampled, there was no significant difference between the two methods. In order to consider the methods for commercial use, other factors (such as economic, logistical, etc.) must also be considered. At the outset, it appears that taking an enzyme supplement such as Beano might be more economically viable in the long term for the consumer, since processing costs for the flatulence free legumes would drive up the price of (normally cheap) legumes. There is an increase in the amount of people who are giving up meat for environmental and other reasons. For these consumers, as well as those who come from cultures that integrate legumes in their cuisine, the removal of flatulence factors from this nutrition-rich food group will be very beneficial. This thesis investigates the evolution and function of this prokaryotic defense mechanism and points out the three most applied CRISPR-Cas systems in relation to current applications in biotechnology. Furthermore, chances and challenges of named systems as well as a guideline for choosing the appropriate system with Cas endonucleases is framed. Therefore, several scientific databases were screened for the most informative and influential publications around the topic. Information was collected and organized in a reference management software. The utilized literature was tabularly denoted and gives an overview of the broad scope of CRISPR-Cas. Studies reported that exercises can be as effective as pharmacotherapy or psychotherapy in the treatment of depression. However less is known about the mechanism exercise effects psychological well-being. The Basic Need Theory, a mini theory within Self-Determination Theory proposes the implication of the perceived social environment on the satisfaction of basic psychological needs, namely autonomy, competence and relatedness. The satisfaction of basic needs is essential for human well-being whereas the frustration leads to ill-being. An autonomy supportive social environment is of use in the fulfillment of basic needs. The following study examined a sample of 90 participants allocated into groups of low and high exercise intensity completing an exercise therapy of 12 weeks. The perceived satisfaction and frustration of basic psychological needs and the effect of autonomy support on the change of basic psychological needs after exercise therapy in different intensities were evaluated pre and post intervention. Results have shown an effect of exercise therapy on the change of depressive symptoms. A difference of efficacy of exercises in low or high intensity could not be verified. A path analysis has shown an effect of autonomy support on the change in depressive symptoms that is partially mediated by the frustration of the need for competence. Taking together the results maintained that exercise therapy redounds in a positive change of depressive symptoms. There is evidence for the satisfaction and frustration of basic psychological needs contributed to this change. Autonomy support needs more empirical testing to be better substantiated with regard to the basic needs. Future studies might examine how the basic psychological needs relate to other facets of ill-being (e.g., anxiety). Different categories of materials such as plastics, metals, concrete, etc., can be used for Additive Manufacturing. At present, WAAM (Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing) is of high interest for many industries, as it allows creating large-scaled metallic components of moderate complexity with high density and good mechanical properties. In this master's Thesis, the capabilities of Gas Metal Arc (GMA) welding for in-situ alloying in multi-material WAAM are being investigated. A 6-axis FD-V6 welding robot by OTC Daihen along with Welbee W400 power supply was used to produce weldments both, with alternating current (AC), as well as pulsed direct current (DC). Two of Photron's High-Frequency cameras were used to investigate the process behavior. An All-in-one oscilloscope, Yokogawa DL850E ScopeCorder, was used to record the voltage and current signals. Single-layer, straight weldments were made to investigate the impact of different welding parameters over the weld seam shape and deposition rate. Later, the setup was extended to induce cold wire to change the chemical composition of the weld seams by in-situ alloying. Therefore, a clamp with adjustable angle, height, and distance was created to position the cold wire feeder along with the GMA welding nozzle. Cross-sections of weldments were taken to extract geometrical information related to the weld seam. In the end, combined experiments were done to investigate the process capabilities of generating weld seams of equal shape but different chemical composition by changing the wire feed speeds and the process parameters. This was the fundamental step for making the process ready for multi-material additive manufacturing. To demonstrate the process performance, two multi-material demonstrator components have been manufactured at the end of the thesis. N2 - The traditional professional world, which presupposes continuity of paths after initial training, has long ceased to exist. Continuous changes, the low durability of knowledge and the increasing complexity of the professional world foster the growing importance of lifelong learning. Today, employees are faced with the challenge of learning and acquiring new competences, even in the workplace. Although there are a variety of competence models for lifelong learning, these mostly relate to implementation at school. However, there is still a research gap on the subject lifelong learning and competences in the professional world. In order to bridge this gap, this essay will present (1) an introduction to the topic of lifelong learning and its competence models and (2) an analysis and assessment of the utility of these competence models in the professional world. The result shows that the competences of communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, digital skills, cultural skills, information management, self-regulation, flexibility, ethical awareness and entrepreneurial skills promote lifelong learning in the professional world. Other aspects to consider regarding lifelong learning in the professional world are: Meaningfulness, possible application and motivation. These results are restricted by the fact that not all present competence models are fit for application in the professional world. Therefore, the question arises whether these competence models are suited for the investigation. Based on the outlined limitations, the essay thus calls for further research, which could expand the knowledge gained in this work by examining additional studies with other or further competence models. E-bikes are zero-emission vehicles as they do not emit any combustion by-products. With the increasing demand for electric bikes over the past decades, the production of e-bikes has also rocketed. The purpose of this thesis is to optimize and design a robust power train of an e-bike test bench that is stationed in the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences. The mechanical design of the present test bench is modular and flexible. The current test rig is susceptible to large disturbances due to vibrations in the chain drive mechanism. Due to the large segments in the chain drive, the torque results are also interrupted. These issues have been overcome by the substitution of the chain-drive mechanism to a belt-drive mechanism. The optimized power transmission system remains the same ensuring a smooth power flow in the system. In order to optimize the powertrain, three different concepts were proposed. Each concept was graded on the basis of different criteria with the help of Decision Matrix Analysis in order to choose the most promising concept. A conceptual 3D CAD model and 2D Drawings of the powertrain have been designed on SolidWorks for better reference. The substituted or the new parts that were essential for the new optimizing concept were decided with the help of a Morphological Box followed by a detailed Bill of Materials (BOM). The new powertrain was commissioned with the new parts as per the concept. The thesis further expands on the characteristics of the present test bench and the optimized test bench, the results and readings of the present test bench and the commissioning of the new powertrain. The thesis concludes with the possibility of the future work on the test bench and structural changes that are necessary for the e-bike that is to be tested. Y1 - 2019 ER - TY - THES A1 - Kösters, Dominic T1 - Production and Chromatographic Analysis of Polyhydroxybutyrate from waste product streams by Azohydromonas lata N2 - As conventional plastic production receives much criticism for being harmful to both humans and the environment, this work focused on establishing a batch fermentation based on waste substrates from local industries to produce polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) with Azohydromonas lata (A. lata). Additionally, the produced PHB was characterised by qualitative and quantitative gas chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometer (GC-MS) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Multiple substrates, including rhubarb waste, pea waste, and dairy industry wastewater (KAAS medium), were tested for successful fermentation. Rhubarb and pea waste could not be used as a fermentation substrate due to obstacles in upstream processing. KAAS medium was prepared by centrifugation and sterile filtration and tested in a 1 L and 4 L fermentation yielding non-competitive biomass and PHB concentrations with 0.09 g/L and 0.004 g/L, respectively. A 3 L fermentation with pure saccharose as the carbon source served as a model for comparison and analysis and resulted in a measured biomass concentration of 3.58 g/L with a PHB content of 1.43 g/L after Soxhlet extraction. The GPC analysis led to no conclusive elograms and results due to issues in non-destructively extracting and solving the PHB. The GC-MS analysis showed excellent linearity with an R2 value of 0.9906 for the standard curve and clear chromatograms, which allowed for both qualitative and quantitative analysis of PHB. Since PHB concentrations from KAAS medium were low, no quantitative analysis could be performed. Only samples from the saccharose-based fermentation could be assessed quantitatively. The found maximum PHB concentration was 2.95 g/L, which deviated from the found 1.43 g/L after Soxhlet extraction and was therefore discussed in this work. No locally available waste substrate could be found to be suitable for an industrial scale fermentation. The findings during this work led to the conclusion that semi-sterile fermentation approaches shall be investigated in future works handling waste products as they can potentially overcome upstream processing steps and, hence, make rhubarb or pea waste a potential candidate for PHB production. Naturally, the use of sensors in order to enable systems intended to protect and support the driver or improve their comfort entails stringent requirements; not only in terms of performance, but reliability and robustness as well. This has led to the continued development of sensor technologies, with developers seeking to additionally provide more compact and cost-effective alternatives to surrounding sensing; autonomous driving being the end goal, therefore entailing stricter requirements. Although both RADAR and LIDAR sensors are used for the same purpose, i.e. measuring the radial distance towards a target and determining its velocity relative to the host vehicle, they differ with regards to their functionalities, components, operation and various other aspects, leading to individual strengths and weaknesses. For example, RADAR is known for its impressive detection range, whereas LIDAR is known for its enhanced accuracy and resolution. These contrasting characteristics therefore indicate that either sensor may be preferred over the other in certain situations; perhaps in which one may perform better than the other, or due to other factors and aspects. This paper aims to analyse and compare the two sensor technologies and their use in passenger vehicles with respect to these various factors and aspects, in order to provide an insight into different cases in which one may be more suitable than the other. In general, a single sensor cannot definitively achieve all automotive requirements within all situations. Thus, a combination of sensors is recommended, in order to benefit from their individual strengths and ensure continuous system functionality and availability to detect the surrounding environment. Research has shown that one of the reasons young people do not vote is a lack of information about the electoral process, candidates and policies. Studies have also shown that preferred information dissemination medium is aligned across age groups, with older people trusting old media such as newspapers and young people leaning towards new media such as social media. With the recent advancement in machine learning, natural language interface and popularity of conversational agents such as chatbots, a new subset of new media has emerged. This study aims to investigate if chatbots could be an efficient medium for young people to access electoral information. It does this by comparing it with a website, using the EU electoral page as a case study. Based on the content of the EU electoral webpage, a chatbot was designed, trained and deployed on Telegram. Participants were randomly divided into two experimental groups (chatbot and website) and asked to find a list of crucial information, interact with the medium and then respond to the System usability scale (SUS), and a perception questionnaire. Observed data and interview notes were also taken. Analysis of the experimental data, observed data and surveys demonstrated that chatbot as a tool is inefficient as an electoral information tool because of the limitation of chatbot when out of scope questions are asked and limitation in following conversation contexts which is crucial to conversations. However, it is rated as above average on usability and joy of use, but raises questions on trust and data protection. It is recommended that the study be performed again when there are more advances to natural language processing to see if its efficiency as an electoral information medium will improve. A longitudinal study is also recommended to see if there’s a direct impact of chatbots as a tool, on young people’s motivation to vote.
