The SUFACHAIN project aims to analyse agroforestry systems and integrate them into local land use systems, while developing products and technologies that contribute to the sustainable use of resources and create local value. In close collaboration with local partners, the project will (1) analyse and design sustainable agroforestry systems, (2) improve quality in the foods made from agroforestry products, (3) develop efficient technologies for the re-use of waste materials from the processing chain, (4) improve transparency along the supply chain, (5) increase local value by valorising selected ecosystem services and (6) develop attractive market niches for agroforestry products. The potential benefits and drawbacks of soil amendment with frass N2 - Insect rearing is a rapidly growing sector in Europe, with larval protein production projected to exceed 1 Mt in 2025. The by-product frass is a mix of larval faeces, exoskeletons and undigested substrate. Given its potential as a soil improver, frass could make insect production a “zero waste” industry. However, its positive reputation has not been thoroughly scrutinized with regard to environmental impacts. We therefore conducted experiments to investigate the effects of frass application on the soil microbial community, release of greenhouse gases and heavy metal availability. The main conclusions were: 1) Frass is nutritious and can benefit the soil microbial biomass, but rapid loss of C and N reduces its fertiliser and organic amendment potential 2) Co-application of frass with urease inhibitors could allow it to be utilised as a slow-release N fertiliser 3) Concurrent soil amendment of frass with nitrification inhibitors prevents soil nitrite accumulation 4) All frass types tested are suitable as ameliorative amendments to heavy-metal contaminated soils T3 - Beiträge des Forschungs- und Transfertags der Hochschule-Rhein Waal - 05 Y1 - 2023 U6 - http://nbn-resolving.de/urn/resolver.pl?urn:nbn:de:hbz:1383-opus4-17689 ER - TY - RPRT A1 - Hansohm, Nele A1 - Jansen, Lennart A1 - Mandala, Kennedy A1 - Kandiado, Peter A1 - Meinhold, Kathrin A1 - Darr, Dietrich A1 - Wichern, Florian A1 - Gebauer, Jens T1 - Instruction Manual of Baobab Cultivation – Based on Experiences in Mangochi, Malawi N2 - Based on experiences in Mangochi, Malawi an instruction manual on how to best cultivate baobab seedlings has been developed. The manual covers all steps from seed and field preparation, how to manage the seedlings e.g. with regard to irrigation and pests, up to harvest of leaves and root tubers – which can be used as a food source.
