    <title language="eng">Out-migration from coastal areas in Ghana and Indonesia - The role of environmental factors</title>
    <abstract language="eng">Projections of climatic and environmental changes have generated a growing effort to assess their implications for human migration. Because migration is always a multicausal phenomenon, this study aims to disentangle the impact of environmental factors from other migration-inducing factors to shed some light on the complex relationship between the environment and migration. Thus, we conducted quantitative microlevel studies in low-lying communities in two high-mobility countries - Ghana and Indonesia - that are particularly exposed to coastal hazards like erosion, land subsidence, storm surges and an increasing sea level, and are prone to flooding on a regular basis. Different measures of environmental threats were collected, ranging from individual perceptions over the household’s distance to the coast to expert opinions. We analyzed the relationships using logistic regressions and controlled for contextual factors on multiple levels. No statistically significant direct impacts of slow-onset environmental events on migration decisions could be detected. Perceptions of storms, a clearly sudden-onset event, however, were found to be significantly linked to out-migration decisions in Ghana. These findings support the hypothesis that environmental factors are generally not a primary cause of migration and their effects are rather context specific - especially for slow-onset changes.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">Development of a Usability Capability Self-Assessment Tool for Improvement and Monitoring of Human-Centred Design in Small and Medium-Sized Companies</title>
    <abstract language="eng">Usability is an important quality aspect of software products. Today, companies need to be capable to develop software with good usability to stay competitive. This can be achieved by practicing human-centred design (HCD) during the development process. However, especially small and medium-sized software enterprises (SMEs) still practice HCD on a low level, if at all.&#13;
This thesis explores whether and how the approach of process capability assessment can support SMEs with a systematic improvement of HCD. It is shown that a process capability assessment for usability at SMEs can only be successful, when the first steps of initiating HCD are al-ready done. Then, a process assessment approach seems to be useful to systematically improve the usability capability at SMEs.&#13;
Based on this theoretical background, a usability capability self-assessment tool tailored for SMEs is developed. It has a simplified assessment procedure and uses the DIN EN ISO 9241-220 as reference model. The self-assessment tool was applied at two German software SMEs to test whether the approach is useful for SMEs and whether the reference model is suitable.&#13;
The results indicate that the usability self-assessment tool is a promising approach for future SMEs as several interesting applications were identified. The chosen reference model seems to be an appropriate choice for a self-assessment; only the complex language used in the standard impedes the assessment. All in all, the thesis lays the foundation for a systematic approach to support SMEs with usability.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">Automated Hyperspectral Field Scanner for Vegetation Monitoring</title>
    <abstract language="eng">Vegetation monitoring is an important tool in a variety of fields, e.g. precision agriculture and plants’ phenotyping. The system design of existing non-invasive ground based systems is usually not open-source. Therefore, these systems cannot be reliably modified and thus are not suitable to advanced applications, such as prototyping of new sensors. This thesis describes the development of a ground based hyperspectral monitoring system for use in plant science and sensor testing. A well-documented and automated working prototype has been developed and initial tests show promising results. Further work in system modularity and redundancy is needed.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">Hardware Design and RF Performance Evaluation of a Long Range 2.4 GHz Radio Module</title>
    <abstract language="eng">Low–power, long–range wireless solutions are needed for transmission of environmental and industrial monitoring data from remote, battery–driven sensors. Chirp spread spectrum (CSS) modulation techniques are able to meet these requirements. A CSS–based radio module was designed to operate in the 2.4 GHz frequency band, whose advantages are worldwide availability, lack of duty–cycle restrictions and a broad spectrum. The module’s power consumption is satisfactory, but its range has to be improved. The accuracy of time-of-flight (ToF) distance estimation, an extra feature of the module, has not been evaluated. Impedance matching, transmission lines and printed circuit board design are among the practical aspects discussed, while ToF ranging and orthogonality of CSS signals are considered from a theoretical point of view.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">Employability of Chinese Overseas Returnees</title>
    <abstract language="eng">In the past years, the benefits of overseas studies have brought many Chinese returnees with some advantages to enhance their employability in the Chinese labor market. However, with a large number of overseas Chinese students returning to work in recent years, some disadvantages of returnees gradually appear that the experiences of studying abroad have been unable to satisfy domestic employers’ needs. In this bachelor’s thesis, the questions on “whether overseas studies still maintain the large benefits on employability for the majority of returned Chinese overseas students, and if not, what are the reasons?” were answered to explore the employability between Chinese returnees and the local graduates. In order to get better analysis, appropriate methods (secondary analysis, literature review, questionnaire, and so forth) were implemented during the study, which questionnaire was considered as the main research measure to update the current condition. The results were somewhat different from the previous studies which indicated a more positive attitude towards the returnees’ employability. Overseas qualifications were not considered as a decisive factor for employment in the Chinese market that more comprehensive experiences were required. Overall, the thesis is possible to provide people with a clearer understanding in the current employability of Chinese students under different study background.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">Differences in root morphology of modern wheat and barley varieties and their wild ancestors</title>
    <abstract language="eng">Sustainable agriculture requires plants which are able to absorb water and nutrients more efficiently to avoid losses and to reduce negative effects on the environment. Root traits are vitally important to fulfill these aims. Therefore, it is important to better understand root morphology of common cereals, such as wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and their wild relatives. Wild wheat and barley relatives have a superior root system and thus may provide a valuable biological resource for breeding stress tolerant cereals in the future. The objectives of this research were to characterize the variability of root traits among modern wheat and barley cultivars and their wild forms. &#13;
Fifteen wheat and nine barley cultivars and wild forms were grown under optimal growth conditions without addition of nutrients in a greenhouse experiment. Cultivars and wild forms showed a high genetic variation in root morphology, as well as in shoot traits. Cultivars were divided into three domestication categories: wild forms, old cultivars and modern cultivars. A high variability while comparing cultivars at domestication level showed that it is a 4 weak predictor for root traits. A deep and large root system, high root length density and a high root to shoot ratio were identified as being beneficial traits for efficient nutrient and water uptake. T. aestivum var. tschermakianum, Aegilops cylindrica, H. vulgare hexastichon and H. lagunculiforme had highest values for these traits.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">Finding an Optimal Duty-cycle for a BCI Speller</title>
    <abstract language="eng">In SSVEP BCIs the stimulation frequencies are fixed, but the same cannot be said of duty-cycles. By altering the used duty-cycles the performance and comfortableness of a BCI speller was examined. This study proposes that the most comfortable duty-cycle can often be used without a significant drop in performance, and most of these performance drops can usually be detected prior to the actual spelling. Two different amplification systems were also compared, resulting in no statistically significant difference in performance.</abstract>

    <title language="deu">Untersuchungen zum Einfluss mikrobiologischer und technischer Parameter auf die hygienische Qualität von Kaffee aus Kaffeevollautomaten</title>
    <abstract language="deu">Der Konsum von Kaffee und seinen Zubereitungsarten hat in den letzten Jahren enorm zugenommen. Die sog. „Kaffee to go“-Getränke gewinnen hierbei immer mehr an Bedeutung und mit den Verpackungen dieser geht eine große Abfallproblematik einher. Der Großteil der Mitnahmegetränke wird in Vollautomaten hergestellt, welche auch im Haushaltsbereich immer mehr zum Einsatz kommen. Diese Vollautomaten müssen regelmäßig gereinigt und gepflegt werden, da sie sonst als Quelle für Lebensmittel-Kontaminationen fungieren können. Durch eine feuchte Umgebung in den Wassertanks und wasserführenden Systemen sowie eine ausreichende Nährstoffzufuhr durch Kaffee und Kaffeerückstände bieten Vollautomaten ein geeignetes Milieu für mikrobielles Wachstum.&#13;
Um den Einfluss technischer und mikrobiologischer Parameter auf die hygienische Qualität von Kaffee überprüfen zu können, wurden Geräte aus dem Haushalts- und dem gewerblichen Bereich untersucht. Die isolierten Mikroorganismen wurden mittels MALDI-TOF-MS identifiziert und als artifizielle Kontaminationen für weitere Versuche verwendet. Sie dienten als Grundlage für empirische Versuchsreihen und Simulationen an einem Kaffeevollautomaten zum Einfluss der Parameter Temperatur und Zeit auf die mikrobiologische Qualität. Die Wirkung dieser Parameter wurde auch in artifiziell kontaminierten Mehrwegbechern simuliert.&#13;
Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass 40 % aller gewerblichen Geräte und 25 % aller Haushaltsgeräte mikrobiologisch belastet waren, die Wassertanks der Haushaltsgeräte waren zu 100 % kontaminiert. Besonders häufig wurden Bakterien der Gattungen Bacillus, Pseudomonas und Staphylococcus identifiziert. Die Ausgabetemperaturen der Vollautomaten sowie die Einwirkdauer der Temperaturen sind als zu gering für eine mikrobiologische Unbedenklichkeit der Lebensmittel einzuordnen. Die Temperaturen der untersuchten Kaffeeproben lagen zwischen 63,59 °C im gewerblichen Bereich und 61,32 °C im Haushaltsbereich. Für kontaminierte Mehrwegbecher konnte eine optimale Kaffeeausgabetemperatur von 68 °C ermittelt werden. Bei adäquater Verwendung geht von Mehrwegbechern kein hygienisches Risiko aus, jedoch von Kaffeevollautomaten bei unzureichender Reinigung.</abstract>

    <title language="deu">Etablierung einer Trübungsmessung als risikobasierten Ansatz im Allergenmanagement zur proaktiven Bewertung des allergenen Kontaminationspotentials von Spülwässern in Produktions- und Abfüllanlagen der Lebensmittelindustrie am Beispiel Feinkostherstellung</title>
    <abstract language="deu">Allergene bzw. Allergieauslöser sind natürlich vorkommende Proteine, die bei allergischen Personen eine anormale Reaktion auf Lebensmittel auslösen. Der Anteil der Bevölkerung mit Allergien steigt stetig an. Die Kennzeichnung von Allergenspuren ist in Deutschland gesetzlich nicht geregelt. Daher greifen einige Lebensmittelhersteller darauf zurück, alle im Betrieb verarbeiteten Allergene als Spuren auf der Verpackung zu kennzeichnen. Durch dieses Vorgehen schränkt sich die Auswahl an Lebensmittel für Lebensmittelallergiker erheblich ein. Die Kennzeichnung ist abhängig von einem guten Allergenmanagement des Unternehmens, das auf Umsetzung diverser Qualitätsmanagementmaßnahmen basiert. Dazu gehört die regelmäßige Kontrolle der Reinigungseffizienz in Hinsicht auf Entfernung von allergenen Spuren in den Anlagen, um eine Kontamination des Folgeprodukts mit Allergenen auszuschließen. Dazu gibt es verschiedene analytische Möglichkeiten, wie PCR, ELISA, LC-MS/MS sowie Lateral Flow Teststäbchen, um die Freiheit von Allergenen im Spülwasser nachzuweisen. Aktuell wird meist auf Lateral Flow Teststäbchen zurückgegriffen, da diese einfach zu handhaben sind und ein schnelles Ergebnis zur Entscheidung liefern. Jedoch hat sich herausgestellt, dass bei erreichtem Limit of Detection (LOD) häufig bereits eine Trübung des letzten Spülwassers mit bloßem Auge erkennbar ist. Da das allergene Protein im homogenen Lebensmittelverbund auftritt und das Protein nicht mehr als solches gemessen wird, sondern die gesamte Menge an Produkt, erhöht sich die zu detektierende Komponente. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit war es, zu prüfen, ob anhand des Parameters Trübung eine Aussage über das allergene Potential von Spülwässern in der Lebensmittelindustrie gemacht werden kann. Der Ansatz beruhte auf Bewertung des Final Rinse (letztes Spülwasser), das auch für Nachweise mit Lateral Flow Teststäbchen als Probenmaterial verwendet wird. Zur Umsetzung der neuen Methode wurden Spülwassersimulationen von allergenhaltigen Produkten der Firma Develey Senf &amp; Feinkost GmbH hergestellt und auf ihr Trübungsverhalten bei verschiedenen Konzentrationen bewertet. Die Festsetzung eines Allergengrenzwertes erfolgte durch eine Berechnung auf Grundlage verschiedener Referenzwerte für allergene Spuren. Dazu wurden verschiedene Bewertungsmodelle miteinander verglichen. Dieser produktspezifische Allergengrenzwert galt als eine Konzentration im Spülwasser, ab der eine Verschleppung von Allergenen relevant war. Diese Grenzkonzentrationen wurden optisch bewertet und durch Trübungsmessung mit Messwerten gestützt. Es konnte für einige Produktgruppen festgelegt werden, dass ein optisch klares Spülwasser auf eine Freiheit von relevanter Allergenmenge hinweist. Für alle getesteten Produkte konnten bei relevanter Allergenmenge eindeutige, sich von reinem Wasser unterscheidende Messwerte generiert werden. Durch die Bestätigung der Korrelation zwischen Trübung und Produktkonzentration wurde eine indirekte Quantifizierung von Allergen ermöglicht. Die Trübungsmessung bietet dadurch einen einfachen, indirekten Schnellnachweis zur Bewertung des allergenen Potentials von Spülwässern, der von Matrixeffekten befreit ist.</abstract>
    <abstract language="eng">Allergens and allergy-inducing substances are naturally-occurring proteins that trigger abnormal reactions to foodstuffs. The proportion of the population suffering from allergies is steadily rising, however labelling of allergen contamination is not regulated by law in Germany. Several foodstuff producers therefore resort to the precautionary labelling of every allergen processed in the production operation. Using this procedure, the variety of food available to allergy sufferers is limited. The labelling itself is dependent on a well-conducted allergy management in the company. &#13;
Allergy management is based on implementation of different quality management systems including the regular control of cleaning efficiency in purpose of elimination of allergen traces in the production lines. This is carried out to exclude the possibility of contamination of downstream products with allergens. There are various analytical methods such as PCR, ELISA, LC-MS/MS and lateral flow devices that may be employed to prove the absence of allergens in the final rinse water. At the moment, the tests most commonly used are lateral flow devices because of their ease of handling and their fast delivery of results. It has been shown, however, that the final rinse water often showed turbidity visible to the naked eye when the limit of detection (LOD) of the lateral flow device was reached. Because of the homogenous distribution of the allergen protein in the foodstuffs compound and the measurement of the whole product diluted in water instead of the pure protein, the substance being detected proliferates. &#13;
The goal of this thesis was to check whether any statement regarding the allergen potential of the final rinse would be possible by assessing the turbidity. The approach is based on evaluation of the final rinse water which is also used for analysis by the lateral flow devices. For the implementation of the new method, samples of rinse water of products from Develey containing allergens were simulated and evaluated according to their turbidity behaviour at different concentrations. The allergen threshold values were calculated based on different threshold values for allergen traces. Different models were compared to permit selection of these threshold values and the specific allergen threshold value was set as the concentration in the final rinse which showed a relevant carryover of allergens. This limit concentration was evaluated visually and measured by turbidity. &#13;
For several product groups, the conclusion was that visually clear rinse water indicates an absence of relevant quantities of allergen. All tested products showed test values for relevant allergen quantities clearly distinguishable from pure water. By confirming the correlation between turbidity and concentration of the product, it was possible to make an indirect quantification of allergen. The measurement of turbidity offers a simple and indirect rapid method for the evaluation of the allergen potential of final rinse water which is free from matrix effects.</abstract>
