A Simulation Study}, school = {Hochschule Rhein-Waal}, abstract = {By 2030 the share of road freight transport in the European Union is expected to grow by 33\% according to the Joint Research Center of the European Commission. However, today trucks are already usually confronted with long wait times at warehouses and similar facilities which lengthen the circulation time of trucks. A commonly identified cause for this is the lack of information and communication exchange between the trucks and the logistics facilities. To improve the information and communication exchange between trucks and warehouses to reduce the circulation and waiting time the use of modern information technologies is recommended. One of those modern information technologies is called geofencing and deals with the tracking of objects in defined geographic areas. This research aims to measure the influence that the implementation of geofencing technology has on the handling process of trucks at warehouses regarding the reduction of circulation and waiting time. A quantitative study in form of a computer simulation simulating the handling process of trucks at warehouses is performed to accomplish that. The results of this research showed that the application of geofencing to the handling process has a significant impact on the reduction of circulation and waiting time. However, analyzing these results showed that the extent of that reduction is dependent on the structure of the handling process at the warehouse as well as the distribution of waiting time throughout the handling process.}, language = {de} } @masterthesis{Pricken, type = {Bachelor Thesis}, author = {Pricken, Lennard}, title = {The effect of Covid 19 on Mergers and Acquisitions in Germany in contrast to European Countries.}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:hbz:1383-opus4-18047}, school = {Hochschule Rhein-Waal}, pages = {67}, abstract = {This paper investigates the impact of the Corona pandemic on M\&A activities considering the variables M\&A volume, M\&A value, GDP, and Covid figures. The aim is to analyze the relationships between the development of the pandemic and M\&A activities in five European countries (Germany, the UK, France, Italy, and Spain). With an introduction to the literature published so far on the topic, an excellent introduction to the situations around Corona and the M\&A market is already offered. The one or other outlooks are already scientifically proven here and have thus also been very for the following analyses and results. In the first step of the research, we analyze M\&A volumes and values in the countries under consideration before and during the pandemic. It can be seen that the number of M\&A transactions increased overall during the pandemic, but transaction values were very fluctuating in comparison. This observation certainly reflects the general uncertainties and economic challenges of the pandemic. The next step is correlating Covid figures, M\&A activity, and GDP. This shows that the pandemic outbreak led to a short-lived decline in M\&A activity, as companies acted more cautiously and held back on transactions due to the uncertainty. However, M\&A activity rose again as the economic situation in the countries stabilized, and companies were better able to respond to the pandemic. In addition, the impact of GDP on M\&A activity is also examined. It can be seen that GDP was affected in all countries due to lockdowns and restrictions on public life. Nevertheless, there was some resilience in the economy as GDP showed an increase in all countries despite the pandemic. The analysis of the correlation between the variables shows that there is a significant relationship between Covid numbers and M\&A activity. The higher the Covid numbers were in a country, the more M\&A activity was affected. This suggests that the development of the pandemic had a significant impact on M\&A activity. Overall, this work shows that the Corona pandemic significantly impacted M\&A activity in Europe. The uncertainty and economic challenges led to a short-lived decline in activity, but the overall number of deals increased. The correlation analysis highlights the links between the pandemic and M\&A activity and underscores the importance of thoroughly examining the variable factors influencing M\&A decisions under Corona conditions.}, language = {de} } @masterthesis{Tscherner, type = {Bachelor Thesis}, author = {Tscherner, Marie}, title = {Anthropogenic Impact on the Amphibian Population at the Ober-Lohberg-Allee in Dinslaken}, school = {Hochschule Rhein-Waal}, abstract = {The current rapid biodiversity loss results in a sped-up extinction of species worldwide. Human health and welfare depend on ecosystem functions and services which are interchangeably connected to biodiversity. Amphibians are one of the most sensitive and vulnerable species to anthropogenic impacts, because of their fast reactions to changing conditions in their surroundings they are often referred to as bioindicator species. Since year 2016 an amphibian population located in the district of Wesel in North-Rhine-Westphalia in Germany experiences drastic changes in population size and composition. To find out if anthropogenic impacts may influence the development of the amphibian population, different methods for assessing the population and biodiversity are used. Data was collected from year 2017 to 2023 with the help of a drift fence with pitfall traps. The amphibian population is evaluated regarding population size, age structure, sex ratio and migration behaviour. Additionally, biodiversity indices are used for a quantitative and qualitative analysis. As last step, the amphibian population is compared to another amphibian population with similar preconditions, but experiencing less anthropogenic pressure. A high reduction of population size and changes in age and sex composition were found for the assessed amphibian population. Moreover, the migration behaviour alternates over time. The found results strongly indicate that the main cause of the negative development is a high anthropogenic pressure. Further intensive conservation and monitoring actions are needed, to restore the amphibian population and avoid the complete destruction.}, language = {en} } @masterthesis{Saberi, type = {Bachelor Thesis}, author = {Saberi, Sabiha}, title = {Governance of Global Value Chains in the Garment Industry: The Bangladesh Fire and Building Safety Accord}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:hbz:1383-opus4-18072}, school = {Hochschule Rhein-Waal}, pages = {80}, abstract = {Global Value Chain (GVC) is a process where production takes places in different countries for different stages. The effects of diminishing green spaces, increasing sealed spaces, and higher summer temperatures are particularly noticeable in built-up and urban areas. The constant use of land and development means that insect habitats, which are essential to a functioning ecosystem, are being lost. But this development is not only problematic for insects: increased sealing also increases the potential risk of the heat island effect, which poses a threat to human health. One possible solution for providing habitat and food for insects in urban areas could be green fa{\c{c}}ade systems. These could partially restore ecosystem services lost to development and have a positive effect on ambient temperature through shading of the building and evaporation from the plants. In order to measure this effect of fa{\c{c}}ade greening on the environment, in particular on insect diversity and insect population, this work measured the number of insects using two different counting methods over several days on two external fa{\c{c}}ades, one with fa{\c{c}}ade greening and one without. The concept comes from data visualization, except for in a physicalization the data is presented as 3D tangible objects. Research shows that physical representation of data and being able to interact with it improve understanding and memorability of data, which supports the embodied cognition thesis, according to which cognition is supported by the body and the physical world and developmental psychology research, suggesting that manipulation of physical objects can promote understanding and learning. Alongside traditional physicalizations of statistical data, there also exist physicalizations of personal data, for example heartrate patterns, DNA data, one's emotional states during the course of the week, etc. Research shows that such physicalizations, often embodied into everyday objects to promote familiarity and intuitive interaction, stimulate self-reflection as well as social interactions by telling others the stories behind the data. Some researchers thought about using data physicalizations as gifts and created example of such gifting artifacts. However, the design process of these artifacts was not based on the user research; nor were the physicalization gifts evaluated in any way. This is the gap that we are addressing in this master thesis, and the goal of our project was therefore to create and evaluate a personal data physicalization present using the human centered design approach. We started our work by conducting user research: performing interviews and defining the important characteristics of the future physicalisation gift. Within the context of Zechenpark, formerly known as the Bergwerk West, in Kamp-Lintfort and the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord as case studies, these locations serve as prime examples of reclamation efforts. Both locations now stand as emblematic sites undergoing transformation from industrial ruins to ecologically vibrant zones. However, it is associated with a lot of new challenges for e-commerce businesses, particularly in understanding and managing the customer behavior patterns with the rising online product returns. Since the accessibility of online shopping has risen, assessing the critical factors related to product return and prediction has become a really challenging task for e-commerce vendors. This study also aims to segment the customers based on customer behavior prediction into two categories, i.e., high return risk and low return risk customers, and further develop strategies to reduce the online returns. This study is rather structured into four integral parts, where each part provides the comprehensive analysis. The first aspect involves analyzing and identifying the customer behavior patterns leading to product returns. The second aspect predicts the online product return based on selected features and the third is to segment the customers based on online product return prediction and categorize them into high return risk, and low return risk customers. The final step involves development of strategies to reduce the product return based on the intense analysis conducted. To achieve this meaningful research outcome, data analysis is conducted to understand the customer behavior patterns, and a Random Forest feature selector is used to identify the customer behavior patterns that lead to product return. Based on the identified features, classification models were applied to classify and predict whether the customer is going to return product or not. Furthermore, in these seven classification models such as Logistic Regression, Ada Boost, Decision Tree, Naive Bayes, XG Boost, K-Nearest Neighbors, and Random Forest were implemented and used to compare the performance of the classification models to find out the best performing model. Lastly, the segmentation of customers is carried out based on the online product prediction using Logistic regression with classification threshold method into high return risk and low return risk customer categories. The results obtained help in understanding the customer behavior and reduce the online product return by developing the strategies. Despite the fact that groundwater is frequently abundant and widely utilized, it is difficult and costly to precisely estimate water levels when compared to surface water systems. Groundwater managers require improved digital tools to understand the system state of the aquifers they seek to interact with sustainably (e.g., accessing real-time updates on the state of the water table to check whether pumping operation is achieving or violating a desired drawdown target.) Here we propose a workflow for a pilot region that (a) temporally interpolates irregularly, manually-measured water levels in a real observation network using data from neighboring sensor-equipped observation, using a multiple linear regression approach to reduce complexity. The resulting interpolated time series are then used in conjunction with the sensor data to come up with (b) spatial interpolations of the groundwater field over time using inversed distance weighting (IDW) at any given point in time. From that, spatial estimates of the groundwater field can be transformed into maps of deviation from drawdown targets. We visualize these targets and their temporal evolution for groundwater managers in real-time on a web application. The web application displays these maps together with operational data (e.g., extraction rates) and meteorological data (recent and forecasted precipitation rates). This thesis explores the potential of solar energy as a sustainable solution to address these challenges, focusing on economic, technical, and regulatory barriers while drawing comparative insights from Cyprus's renewable energy model. The research examines three primary questions regarding the economic and technical challenges hindering solar energy adoption in Lebanon, the lessons that can be learned from Cyprus to inform solutions, and the comprehensive strategies that can support the development of Lebanon's solar energy sector. The findings reveal that while Lebanon has experienced rapid growth in solar energy adoption, the sector is undermined by systemic issues such as low-quality imports, skill gaps, insufficient grid infrastructure, and the dominance of diesel generators. Comparative analysis with Cyprus underscores the importance of robust regulatory frameworks, financial accessibility, public-private partnerships, and accreditation systems for solar installers. Profit shifting, tax avoidance, deductions, and exemptions in current international tax practices have contributed to lower tax revenues worldwide, splitting the consideration of corporate tax rates into two: statutory vs effective. In light of this, this thesis examines the relationship between corporate taxation and social inequality. The effects of statutory and effective tax rates on both income and wealth inequality (measured by their respective Gini-coefficients) are compared. A panel data regression model was carried out using SPSS. The model was applied to a selection of 10 OECD countries, spanning over a 6-year period from 2017 to 2022. The regression model indicates a significant relationship between income inequality (income Gini-coefficient) and the two corporate tax rates (estimates of -0.332 for statutory and -0.311 for effective). However, a significant relationship between wealth inequality (wealth Gini-coefficient) and the two tax rates was not identified. In addition, limitations regarding heteroscedasticity, potential endogeneity issues, and the small data set were addressed in detail but not completely ruled out. The destabilisation mechanisms, flotation rate acceleration, and segregation of phases in the system undergo considerable improvement through CO2 microbubbles formation. The ability to effectively separate and isolate aqueous and oil phases is important for treating industrial wastewater, hence optimizing waste reduction and resource recovery. The laboratory studies explore various operational parameters, such as CO₂ consumption efficiency, pressure variations, and residence time, in order to optimize splitting in various emulsion mixtures. The studies proved to effectively provide up to 95\% total organic carbon (TOC) reduction, particularly achieved in combination with prolonged flotation and settling. Significantly, treatment by CO2-induced separations proved to have most efficiency in synthetic Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SDS)-based emulsions and in industrial scenarios such as in cooling lubricants. In addition, prolonging flotation time to an overnight timeframe significantly increased TOC reduction in the case of the SDS emulsion. The presented results offer a new look over the experimental development of separation technologies, demonstrating the effective splitting of emulsions by injecting CO2 without additional pressure input and thus its feasibility in an industrial setting. The research question is: "What impact can Virtual Influencers have on Brand Management?". The aim is to identify the advantages and disadvantages of VIs from a Brand Management perspective. The research utilizes a literature review and comparison to evaluate key dimensions such as authenticity, credibility, engagement, diversity, flexibility and Marketing effectiveness. The results show that VIs offer significant benefits, including flexibility, adaptability, diversity, high engagement rates, increased brand awareness and cost-effectiveness. VIs can operate without time, location or health restrictions and can be precisely customized to the brand strategy. They also achieve higher engagement rates, especially with sponsored posts, and can effectively increase brand visibility and recognition. However, the study also identifies several challenges associated with VIs. These include authenticity issues, as VIs do not have real-life experiences, making it difficult to develop real emotional connections with followers. In addition, VIs may struggle to gain credibility when promoting physical products and may not be as effective at generating purchase intention as HIs. The reduced parasocial interactions and initial distrust of users are also notable drawbacks. Overall, the research concludes that while VIs offer great potential for Brand Management and bring unique benefits, brands need to carefully consider the challenges associated with them. In particular, the aspects of cyber security and business continuity are analysed. The study covers the basics of virtualisation and containerisation, including their architecture and isolation mechanisms. Furthermore, the security risks and benefits of both approaches are analysed, especially with regard to container outbreak scenarios and vulnerability lifecycle management. A particular focus is placed on the breakdown of containerisation into different groups, including container runtime, container image and orchestration, in order to enable a differentiated view of security and efficiency potentials. Based on these findings, a concrete architecture proposal is presented that includes recommendations for the secure orchestration and management of containers. Unfortunately, the research is very limited for low-resource languages like Nepali. This study examines the utilisation of pre-trained BERT-based NERNepal for Named Entity Recognition (NER) tasks in Nepali text. The main goal is to investigate the efficiency of the NERNepal model, which has been pre-trained and fine-tuned on Nepali corpus data for NER. This research provides new insights by evaluating the NERNepal model on two distinct datasets. It addresses unique linguistic challenges specific to Nepali. The study also offers a detailed analysis of the model's strengths and weaknesses. By focusing on diverse datasets, this study shows how adaptable the model is and how its performance varies. These aspects have not been explored extensively before. The EverestNER dataset is one of the largest human-annotated datasets in Nepal so far, and the Nepali_NER dataset is also BIO-annotated for the NER task, which helped to compare the model's prediction. The performance was better on the Nepali_NER dataset in comparison with another selected dataset. The EverestNER dataset contained many complex words for ORG connected with many tokens for a single entity with different contextual meanings and different annotations for the same word in different tokens as per context. Because of this, it created more confusion for the prediction, especially for the ORG entity. It had a similar issue with another dataset as well, but the label annotation was better in comparison. Furthermore, the research tries to clarify the difficulties and constraints related to utilising pre-trained BERT models for NER in low-resource languages such as Nepali. The study focuses on research areas on the efficacy of the model and its performance on two different datasets. Post-training with the EverestNER train dataset was attempted, but due to computational resource limitations, only a maximum of 3 epochs was possible, which did not improve the evaluation. It also has implications for enhancing language processing tools for Nepali. The results show the ability of a pre-trained BERT-based model to improve NER skills for Nepali text. However, further study is required to overcome the current obstacles to identifying complex words. The availability of high computational resources and the possibility of combining other NER approaches with a transformer-based model could increase the performance and robustness of the model. Because of this policy, alternative poultry production methods were created to better meet animal welfare guidelines. Integrating male and female chicken farming offers a new, innovative solution to ethical and sustainability issues in traditional farming by combining egg and meat production. The importance of this research for revolutionizing poultry farming cannot be overstated (Becker et al., 2023). A University of Bonn research team is studying this alternative farming method to determine its productivity and viability. To meet industry needs while prioritizing animal welfare, they evaluate dual-purpose chicken potential by analysing egg (number and weight) and meat (weight) yields. First, it examines existing research on various facets of analysing and forecasting individual chicken egg and growth data. It further explores Becker et al.'s 2023 study, "The British Ixworth: individual growth and egg production of a purebred dual-purpose chicken." Moreover, the linear regression, SVR, KNN, and decision tree models were applied to this data for advanced analysis and prediction. The creation of a prototypical tool was used to gain insights into these challenges and sources of error during the conversion to Linked Data. These were then analyzed and solutions to these problems created. The resulting tool was evaluated with different Open Data datasets. The results show that it is able to partially automate the process of converting Open Data to Linked Open Data and that it succeeded in eliminating key barriers, like the necessary programming skills, currently needed to create Linked Data. The architecture is designed to solve the common challenge of bridging disparate operating systems in real-time robotics. Performance analysis over 35 moves demonstrates the architecture's high reliability, achieving a 100\% success rate in the software pipeline from command generation to execution planning. The study quantifies the system's primary performance bottleneck, showing that the physical robot movement averaged 22.6 seconds, while the underlying communication latency was negligible at 2.89 ms. This highlights a crucial distinction between computational speed and the challenges of physical manipulation. Compared to existing human-robot chess systems, which typically operate within a single OS or rely heavily on computer vision, this work contributes a validated architectural alternative. W. Erickson and aksimovic 2020). I develop a prototype digital controller for a buck converter, which uses a trained GPR model to predict the PWM duty cycle required to obtain a desired output voltage. I use an Analog Discovery 2 (AD2) (Digilent Inc. n.d.) as an interface between the GPR controller and the buck converter hardware by providing real-time voltage measurements to the controller and generating the PWM signal. I compare the performance of the GPR controller with the TPS629210DRLR Integrated Circuit (IC) (Texas Instruments 2022), which uses an analog control method and serves as the reference performance standard. I compare the performance of the GPR controller and the IC based on their ability to maintain a target voltage during a load change involving an RC load. The results are evaluated based on the voltage regulation accuracy and load voltage settling time. The results show that both controllers are able to set the load voltage within 1\% of the target value. However, the GPR controller has a settling time around 3 times longer than the analog controller. The longer settling time is due to latencies from communication with the AD2 and the time required for duty cycle computation. Despite this, the settling time difference is short enough to consider the digital GPR controller competitive to the reference analog control method, especially since the current prototype is not optimized to reduce these latencies. In Germany, the shift from internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) to electric vehicles (EVs) has become a key focus of national and EU climate policies. Nevertheless, the transition to EVs is associated with a multitude of factors that need to be considered, including emissions from manufacturing, the energy used during operations, and post-operational treatment. This thesis focuses on the design, development, and refinement of a web-based CO₂ Lifecycle Emission Calculation tool that compares cradle-to-grave emissions of EVs and diesel ICEVs based on different driving scenarios in Germany. It is based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Methodology as indicated in ISO 14040/14044. With the tool, the manufacturing, operational, and end-of-life emissions are estimated based on validated datasets from peer-reviewed literature and authoritative bodies (IPCC, IEA, UBA). The tool's modular structure, which was developed in Python with the Streamlit framework, also allows for other languages to be added, selection of the region's grid mix, scenario comparisons, and results visualization in multi-level dashboards. Findings of the literature review show that the tool is accurate for both types of vehicles as the known lifecycle emissions ranges for both types are captured. Carbon payback periods for EVs ranged from less than three years to over eight years depending on the grid context, from renewable-rich to coal-intensive. Sensitivity analysis demonstrates that both grid CO₂ intensity and annual mileage hold the greatest influence over lifecycle results. This research contributes to sustainability as it fills the void that exists between academic LCA models and consumer-facing applications with a transparent, reproducible, and user-configurable decision-support tool. Improvements can be made by incorporating real-time grid emission data, expanding the vehicle datasets, and including additional CO₂ environmental impact categories.}, language = {en} } @misc{Voss, type = {Master Thesis}, author = {Voß, Julia}, title = {The effectiveness of mental practice on novices' basketball free throw performance: Differentiation between external and internal visual imagery}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:hbz:1383-opus4-3231}, school = {Hochschule Rhein-Waal}, pages = {124}, abstract = {Purpose: The present study aims to investigate the acute effects of mental practice on novices' basketball free throw performance and their motor self-efficacy. Research has shown that one of the reasons young people do not vote is a lack of information about the electoral process, candidates and policies. Studies have also shown that preferred information dissemination medium is aligned across age groups, with older people trusting old media such as newspapers and young people leaning towards new media such as social media. With the recent advancement in machine learning, natural language interface and popularity of conversational agents such as chatbots, a new subset of new media has emerged. This study aims to investigate if chatbots could be an efficient medium for young people to access electoral information. It does this by comparing it with a website, using the EU electoral page as a case study. Based on the content of the EU electoral webpage, a chatbot was designed, trained and deployed on Telegram. Participants were randomly divided into two experimental groups (chatbot and website) and asked to find a list of crucial information, interact with the medium and then respond to the System usability scale (SUS), and a perception questionnaire. Observed data and interview notes were also taken. Analysis of the experimental data, observed data and surveys demonstrated that chatbot as a tool is inefficient as an electoral information tool because of the limitation of chatbot when out of scope questions are asked and limitation in following conversation contexts which is crucial to conversations. However, it is rated as above average on usability and joy of use, but raises questions on trust and data protection. It is recommended that the study be performed again when there are more advances to natural language processing to see if its efficiency as an electoral information medium will improve. However, many skeptical voices arise regarding impact investing, because some issues hinder the growth the impact investing market (Gray et al., 2015, p.3). Regulatory intervention is needed to overcome the persisting challenges (Martin, 2013, p.18). Therefore, a literature review was undertaken in order to give an overview of existing regulatory measures and initiatives that have been implemented in different regions to foster the growth of the impact investing market, especially in the light of the taxonomy that was recently proposed by the EU. The literature review revealed that many regulations and initiatives have been established across the world, however the regulatory environment regarding impact investing is currently fragmented. Therefore, it is important that governments collaborate to uniformize regulations on a global level. Furthermore, this paper aims to find out how impact funds perform financially in comparison to conventional funds. In order to answer that question a performance analysis, using the Sharpe Ratio as a performance indicator, was conducted.
