About the publication server "Repositorium Bochum"

The publication server "Repositorium Bochum" is a service offered by the university library of Bochum University of Applied Sciences on behalf of Bochum University of Applied Sciences.
The publication server provides members of Bochum University of Applied Sciences with a platform for the free electronic publication of scientific documents created within the framework of research and teaching at the university.

In this way, the university library supports open and worldwide access to scientific publications of Bochum University of Applied Sciences in the spirit of Open Access, thereby contributing to the advancement of scientific discourse.

What documents can be uploaded?

Members of Bochum University of Applied Sciences can electronically publish their scientific documents (articles, books, conference publications, project reports, preprints, etc.). The prerequisite is that the legal conditions for publishing the full texts are met. This must be confirmed with the declaration of consent.

Documents produced by students at Bochum University of Applied Sciences—such as bachelor’s theses, master’s theses, and term papers—may be published provided that the relevant department has established quality criteria and written approval has been obtained from the primary examiner or primary advisor.

Hints for searching

Boolean Operators AND, OR, NOT

When you use the Simple Search, all terms are combined by AND automatically. For a more tightly focused search you may use the Boolean Operators to combine different search terms.

AND: The document has to contain all search terms.

OR: The document has to contain one of the search terms. This function broadens your search and is recommended, when there are different terms for the same meaning.

article OR paper

NOT: This function works excluding and might be useful to reduce a large result list: Documents, which contain the one term, may not contain the other.

article NOT paper

The Boolean Operators work for the Advanced Search as well. You may use them to combine different search terms within one search field. For example, to search for documents of the author "Doe" in the years 2002 or 2003, use the query:

Author: Doe 
 Year: 2002 OR 2003

Wildcards

In the field 'Search:', you may use the symbols '*' and '?' as wildcards. Use them in place of a character or characters that are unknown or that may differ. You cannot use them in front of a word or search string.

Example 1: chemi* finds chemical but also chemistry or chemist. Example 2: licen?e finds licence and license.

You may use double quotes (") to search for phrases.

How do I publish my work here?

Step 1
Click on "Publish" in the menu on the homepage.
You will first be prompted to select a document type. Directly below that, you can upload your document(s). Publications are usually published as PDFs (Portable Document Format).
Here you can find the accepted file formats.

Step 2
Next, read the information about "Granting the Simple Right of Use." This section also discusses the need for a declaration of consent and where you can find the guidelines.
Confirm your agreement by checking the box. Please remember to print out the declaration of consent and submit the completed form to the university library.

Step 3
Next comes the actual form. Here, various details about your publication (so-called metadata) are requested. Use the given categories to describe the document you wish to publish.
Depending on the document type, some fields are mandatory and marked with a small asterisk. Provide the information as accurately as possible. For example, the following details are collected:

Document type (to be selected from a list)
The title of your publication and the language of the title
A brief content description of your document (abstract)
The date the document will be published (usually the day you upload it)
The language of the document (to be selected from a list)
The license under which you want to publish your document (to be selected from a list)

Step 4
At the end of the data collection, your entries will be displayed again, and you have three options: You can correct the data for your document if necessary, cancel the process, or save it directly.
What happens after I upload the data?
The staff of the university library will review the data and release it, provided the corresponding declaration of consent is submitted. If any information is missing or questions arise, you will receive an email.

Step 5
Please remember to print out the declaration of consent and submit the completed form to the university library.

What's metadata?

Metadata can be defined as

data describing one or more resources or as
data associated with an object and describing it

Basically metadata is describing documents, objects or services and contains information about their content, structure or form. More abstractly metadata is a description of data or "data about data". Bibliographic data sets and catalog entries in library catalogs can be seen as a kind of metadata.

This repository is using metadata in the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set (short Dublin Core (DC)) which has fifteen basic elements. Dublin Core is the result of international efforts to reach a collective consensus in describing electronic objects (in the broadest sense). The Library of Congress (LoC), the Online Cataloging Library Center (OCLC) and several national libraries are dealing with Dublin Core in many projects and are close to introduce the system respectively.

What's to regard if I plan to publish my work by a professional publisher or have done that already?

In most cases this is no problem. Please ensure in any case, if your publisher allows a parallel publication! To do that you can use the Open Policy Finder.

What about licenses for my publication?

Authors can choose which terms of use must be regarded for their publication. These terms are defined in a license. This repository supports different licenses, from which you can choose one (i.e. Creative Commons Licenses/).
