Enhancing Decision-Making for Human-Centered Construction Robotics: A Methodological Framework
(2024)
While the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry is increasingly aware of the rising demands for productivity and human-centered construction improvements, the holistic adoption of robotics as a fundamental strategy to address these challenges has not yet reached comprehensive fruition. This paper therefore introduces a methodological framework aiming to address the industry's pressing need for a systematic approach for assessing the feasibility of integrating robotics into human-centered construction processes. It aims to enhance decision-making regarding the degree of automation in human-centered construction processes, ranging from partial to full robotization or non-robotization. The framework is characterized by a more holistic end-to-end data-/workflow and therefore adopts a multifaceted approach, leveraging BIM-based planning methodologies and integrating new technologies [e.g., Motion Capturing (MoCap), work process simulation software incorporating Digital Human Models (DHM), self-developed conversion/interfacing software and more] that have not been widely used in the industry to date. Subsequently, the framework is evaluated in a real-life bricklaying construction process to ensure a more application-based approach. Overall, the framework advances current construction processes with a more inclusive and conscious technology infill to empower construction professionals with the workflow and corresponding tools necessary for the practical integration of robotics into human-centered construction processes.
The RILEM TC 281–CCC ‘‘Carbonation of concrete with supplementary cementitious materials’’ conducted a study on the effects of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) on the carbonation rate of blended cement concretes and mortars. In this context, a comprehensive database has been established, consisting of 1044 concrete and mortar mixes with their associated carbonation depth data over time. The dataset comprises mix designs with a large variety of binders with up to 94% SCMs, collected from the literature as well as unpublished testing reports. The data includes chemical composition and physical properties of the raw materials, mix-designs, compressive strengths, curing and carbonation testing conditions. Natural carbonation was recorded for several years in many cases with both indoor and outdoor results. The database has been analysed to investigate the effects of binder composition and mix design, curing and preconditioning, and relative humidity on the carbonation rate. Furthermore, the accuracy of accelerated carbonation testing as well as possible correlations between compressive strength and carbonation resistance were evaluated. The analysis revealed that the w/CaOreactive ratio is a decisive factor for carbonation resistance, while curing and exposure conditions also influence carbonation. Under natural exposure conditions, the carbonation data exhibit significant variations. Nevertheless, probabilistic inference suggests that both accelerated and natural carbonation processes follow a square-root-of-time behavior, though accelerated and natural carbonation cannot be converted into each other without corrections. Additionally, a machine learning technique was employed to assess the influence of parameters governing the carbonation progress in concretes.
Digital Twins (DT) implementation in the Built Environment (BE) industry is still in its early stages. Aiming to increase the knowledge about DT, this study analyzes how DT can be understood in the BE sector and investigates its different potential benefits and expected challenges. To do so, the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach was employed. Using 228 publications, the current study presents a proposed definition and structure for DT systems. The proposed structure is based on four main layers: physical, digital, application, and user layers. The study also classified the applications of DT into six groups: sustainability and environmental, facility management, safety, health, and risk management, structural performance, construction management, and architectural and urban-related applications. The challenges of DT implementation were also grouped based on industry-related, social and organizational, economic, technological, and political and legal challenges. Based on the results, future research directions and practical recommendations were presented to support the successful deployment of the technology.

Measured building survey
(2022)
The precisely measured documentation of historical buildings by means of drawings – the building survey – serves several purposes: it is not only an important part of the scientific study of architecture, but also an essential basis for building measures in existing contexts. It is the only way to undertake well-founded research respectively detailed architectural planning, from structural improvement to conservation and restoration measures. In addition to a historical overview of building surveying as a method, this volume mainly offers practical assistance regarding the different methods for documenting historic buildings – starting from manual methods of measuring up to electronic and computer-aided utilities available today. The content is complemented by many illustrations and examples as well as an introduction to methods, that go beyond the mere graphic documentation and thus represent ways of conducting thorough building examinations. The book offers easy access to the topic of building surveying, both for students as well as for anyone dealing professionally with historic buildings

Despite the existence of societies, journals, conferences, and doctoral programs that generate increasing numbers of doctorates and research publications design research is not a coherent intellectual field with a clear boundary of its subject matter, nor an academic discipline founded on a consensual understanding of its purpose, methodology and pedagogical curriculum; subsequently, there is hardly any commonality across doctoral programs and the assessment of a doctoral degree is difficult if not impossible, so criticised the late design historian Victor Margolin. He called to unify and bound design research to solve these problems. While agreeing with his critiques and appreciating his good intentions, I will argue that his call is impractical as well as undesirable due to the social circumstances and the nature of design inquiry and the changing academic research practice which tend towards inter/transdisciplinarity. Efforts should rather be directed to join fragmented design research in an evolving and inclusive manner to establish a dynamically connected discipline.
In “Design Research: Making of a Connected Discipline Part 1”, I argue that the social circumstances and the nature of design inquiry and the changing academic research practice which tend towards inter/ trans-disciplinarity render building a unified and bounded discipline unrealistic and undesirable. In place of unified and bounded, I suggest connected to be a more viable concept to think about disciplinary
research in design. Here in Part 2, I make some suggestions to start making of a connected discipline.

Design research is an academic issue and increasingly a success factor for industrial, organizational and social innovation. Efficient methodical support is crucial. The fiercerejection of 1st generation design methods in the early 1970s resulted in thepostmodernist attitude of "no methods", and subsequently in the strong adoption ofscientific ways of thinking for design research. The situation regarding methodologyhas been characterized by unproductive dualisms such as scientific vs. designerlymethods, normative vs. descriptive methods, research vs. design. The potential of theearly (1st generation) methods is neglected and the practical usefulness of designresearch is impeded. The suggestion for 2nd generation methods, conceived asdiscursive instruments, as discussed by Rittel and others has hardly been taken up indesign. The development of MAPS is aimed at the support of practice-oriented design, innovation and research processes. The long-term aim is the development of anintegrated knowledge and communication platform for research through design. MAPSis based upon the idea of a productive reconciliation of the strong dualisms between"scientific" and "designerly" modes of inquiry and supports the emerging concept ofdesign thinking. The paper reports on the ongoing research and development processfrom MAPS1.0 towards MAPS2.0 and beyond.
Beyond Dualisms in Methodology. An Integrative Design Research Medium "MAPS" and some Reflections
(2008)
Design research is an academic issue and increasingly an essential success factor for industrial, organizational and social innovation. The fierce rejection of 1st generation design methods in the early 1970s resulted in the postmodernist attitude of "no methods", and subsequently, after more than a decade, in the strong adoption of scientific methods, or "the" scientific method, for design research. The current situation regarding methodology is characterized by unproductive dualisms such as scientific methods vs. designerly methods, normative methods vs. descriptive methods, research vs. design. The potential of the early (1st generation) methods is neglected and the practical usefulness of design research is impeded. The suggestion for 2nd generation methods as discussed by Rittel and others has hardly been taken up in design. The development of a methodological tool / medium for research through design – MAPS1 – (which is the central part of the paper) presents the cause and catalyst for some reflections about the usability / desirability / usefulness of methodical support for the design (research) process.
We currently observe an interesting paradox: on the one hand, a narrow and determined preoccupation with the world we actually live in, away from the multiple pasts and futures in which we are embedded. On the other hand, we note a recurrent appeal to transcend the present towards the future – without reference, however, to the questions, perspectives, value propositions and investments that might define the necessary steps for ‘moving forward’ in important areas of social, cultural and economic life.
In the pursuit of a relevant yet flexible foundation for research in the design disciplines, practice-led research has generated a tremendous amount of interest in the recent years. A designer’s knowledge synthesizes intellectual, creative, experimental and interpretative skills, arguably exceeding the forms of knowledge privileged by, and in, conventional research. The “Communicating (by) Design” conference seeks to investigate developments in the sphere of research by (or through) design. While our main concern originates in architecture, other design disciplines are also of interest. The conference will investigate one of the central challenges for the designbased researcher, namely that of communicating. Communicating here may be understood as a set of processes, activities and events, which take place on different levels in designing - from individual, inner dialogues, through the issue of naming and defining terms to a more general problem of the representation of design knowledge - in order to articulate a set of intentions and values to an audience (which may be oneself ). Exploring aspects of defining, framing and sharing within design, the role of listening will also be raised, as the attitude that constitutes connectivity and allows conversation. The relationship between theory and practice, or “creative” and “critical” modes of inquiry, will also form an important theme of discussion, with a view to drawing the contours of new “hybrid” research practices. We accordingly welcome different representational forms relating to designled research - formal, explorative and/or interpretative - reflecting both doing and thinking about designing. The “Communicating (by) Design” conference is organized jointly between: Sint-Lucas School of Architecture in Brussels and Ghent, Belgium and Department of Architecture at the Chalmers University of Technology in Göteborg, Sweden.
Abduction Revisited
(2009)
We take abduction to be the central 'logical' and social "mechanism" of knowledge generation in general, applicable to everyday life, design, and the sciences. In our designerly methodological terms, we speak of ANALYSIS (the inductive phase), PROJECTION (the abductive phase) and SYNTHESIS (the deductive phase). We suppose that projection is enabled by abduction, and that understanding the abductive mechanisms in design PROJECTION is essential for the development of genuine designerly concepts of research. We hypothesize that transfer and transferability are relevant concepts and that establishing their relation to abduction is necessary. We set up quasi-experiments to examine design transfer. Based on the results of the experiments and following , we relate Peircean semiotics to his logical theory: his classes of signs are also classes of abduction. Firstly, we subscribe to Peirce's semiotic -a sign is in a triadic relation among object, interpretant and sign itself. Then we...

A methodology for the evaluation of the annual probability of occurrence of post-elastic seismic damage in realistic structures is presented. The seismic damage hazard analysis (SDHA) is carried out here by coupling conventional seismic hazard analysis (SHA) for the site and the structural response to earthquakes of different intensities. The structural performance is statistically investigated by conducting appropriate non-linear dynamic analyses for a limited set of real ground-motion records that might potentially pose a threat to the structure at the site. The merging of these two approaches permits calculation of the seismic hazard faced by the structure in direct damage terms. The methodology is presented in this paper with the aid of a simple illustrative case study where the annual probability of damage and, eventually, failure of a power house steel structure is computed. This methodology can find practical applications in seismic retrofit of nuclear power plant structures and in the evaluation of seismic damage hazards in new structure designs.
Projection before Analysis

Specification of the target reliability levels is one of the key issues of the assessment of existing structures. ISO 13822:2010 and ISO 2394:1998 indicate procedures for deriving the target reliability levels by optimisation of the total cost related to an assumed remaining working life of a structure. In the submitted study this approach is applied to estimate the target reliability levels of an existing structural member in conjunction with the human safety criteria. Obtained results are critically compared with the recommendations given in present standards. It appears that the requirement on the same target reliability levels for existing structures as for new structures is uneconomical. Further, the cost optimisation seems to yield rather low reliability levels and human safety criteria become commonly decisive for specification of the target reliabilities of existing structures.

There is great interest in developing an adequate partial factor format for the assessment of existing structures, and in particular bridges, that should be able to take various aspects into account linked to the fact that the structure already exists. As the structure is existing, additional information related to material parameters, loading conditions, local structural defects, etc. can be accounted for. In addition, the degree of conservatism needs to be well balanced to avoid unnecessary investment of resources in replacement or retrofitting. This contribution considers the experience gained in recent years in parallel with some ongoing standardisation work in relation to Eurocodes and the next edition of the fib Model Code for new and existing concrete structures. The current state of the art of partial factors for the assessment of existing structures is explored and the differences are assessed based on a comparison between (i) the use of recommended fixed partial factors as provided in many national and international codes, (ii) adjusted (flexible) partial factors derived for the individual case under consideration, and (ii) reliability-based verification. In order to assess the adequacy of proposals and identify some differences, the available partial factor formats are applied to two case studies of reinforced concrete bridges and they are critically assessed.

The expected lifespan of cement-based materials, particularly concrete, is at least 50 years. Changes in the pore structure of the material need to be considered due to external influences and associated transport processes. The expansion behaviour of concrete and mortar during freeze–thaw attacks, combined with de-icing salt agents, is crucial for both internal and external damage. It is essential to determine and simulate the expansion behaviour of these materials in the laboratory, as well as detect the slow, long-term expansion in real structures. This study measures the expansion of mortar samples during freeze–thaw loading using a high-resolution hand-held 3D laser scanner. The specimens are prepared with fully or partially saturated pore structures through water storage or drying. During freeze–thaw experiments, the specimens are exposed to pure water or a 3% sodium chloride solution (NaCl). Results show contraction during freezing and subsequent expansion during thawing. Both test solutions exhibit similar expansion behaviour, with differences primarily due to saturation levels. Further investigations are required to explore the changing expansion behaviour caused by increasing microcracking resulting from continuous freeze–thaw cycles. A numerical analysis using a 3D coupled hygro-thermo-mechanical (HTM) model is conducted to examine the freeze–thaw behaviour of the mortar. The model accurately represents the freezing deformation during the freeze–thaw cycle.
As use of digital fabrication increases in architecture, engineering and construction, the industry seeks appropriate management and processes to enable the adoption during the design/planning phase. Many enablers have been identified across various studies; however, a comprehensive synthesis defining the enablers of design for digital fabrication does not yet exist. This work conducts a systematic literature review of 59 journal articles published in the past decade and identifies 140 enablers under eight categories: actors, resources, conditions, attributes, processes, artefacts, values and risks. The enablers' frequency network is illustrated using an adjacency matrix. Through the lens of actor-network theory, the work creates a relational ontology to demonstrate the linkages between different enablers. Three examples are presented using onion diagrams: circular construction focus, business model focus and digital twin in industrialisation focus. Finally, this work discusses the intersection of relational ontology with process modelling to design future digital fabrication work routines.
