Measured building survey
(2022)
The precisely measured documentation of historical buildings by means of drawings – the building survey – serves several purposes: it is not only an important part of the scientific study of architecture, but also an essential basis for building measures in existing contexts. It is the only way to undertake well-founded research respectively detailed architectural planning, from structural improvement to conservation and restoration measures. In addition to a historical overview of building surveying as a method, this volume mainly offers practical assistance regarding the different methods for documenting historic buildings – starting from manual methods of measuring up to electronic and computer-aided utilities available today. The content is complemented by many illustrations and examples as well as an introduction to methods, that go beyond the mere graphic documentation and thus represent ways of conducting thorough building examinations. The book offers easy access to the topic of building surveying, both for students as well as for anyone dealing professionally with historic buildings
Mechanical surface treatments such as deep rolling or laser-shock peening can markedly affect the cyclic performance of light-weight alloys, especially if significant thick work hardened surface regions are induced. At room temperature, the cyclic deformation behaviour is strongly influenced by the nature of the induced near-surface microstructures provided that they remain stable during fatigue loading. At elevated temperatures, the stability of near-surface work hardening and local microstructures plays an even more important role since the process-induced residual compressive stresses are likely to anneal out partially or completely. This overview illustrates to what extent deep rolling can effect the cyclic performance of various wrought light alloys being fatigue loaded in stress control at ambient and elevated temperatures.
Find an introduction to the architecture, concepts and algorithms of the Linux kernel in Professional Linux Kernel Architecture, a guide to the kernel sources and large number of connections among subsystems. Find an introduction to the relevant structures and functions exported by the kernel to userland, understand the theoretical and conceptual aspects of the Linux kernel and Unix derivatives, and gain a deeper understanding of the kernel. Learn how to reduce the vast amount of information contained in the kernel sources and obtain the skills necessary to understand the kernel sources.
Road Vehicle Dynamics
(2020)
Road Vehicle Dynamics: Fundamentals and Modeling with MATLAB®, Second Edition combines coverage of vehicle dynamics concepts with MATLAB v9.4 programming routines and results, along with examples and numerous chapter exercises. Improved and updated, the revised text offers new coverage of active safety systems, rear wheel steering, race car suspension systems, airsprings, four-wheel drive, mechatronics, and other topics. Based on the lead author's extensive lectures, classes, and research activities, this unique text provides readers with insights into the computer-based modeling of automobiles and other ground vehicles. Instructor resources, including problem solutions, are available from the publisher.
Muslim Life in Germany
(2009)
A major challenge in grid computing remains the application software development for this new kind of infrastructure. Grid application programmers have to take into account several complicated aspects: distribution of data and computations, parallel computations on different sites and processors, heterogeneity of the involved computers, load balancing, etc. Grid programmers thus demand novel programming methodologies that abstract over such technical details while preserving the beneficial features of modern grid middleware.
For this purpose, the authors introduce Higher-Order Components (HOCs). HOCs implement generic parallel/distributed processing patterns, together with the required middleware support, and they are offered to users via a high-level service interface. Users only have to provide the application-specific pieces of their programs as parameters, while low-level implementation details, such as the transfer of data across the grid, are handled by the HOCs. HOCs were developed within the CoreGRID European Network of Excellence and have become an optional extension of the popular Globus middleware. The book provides the reader with hands-on experience, describing a broad collection of example applications from various fields of science and engineering, including biology, physics, etc. The Java code for these examples is provided online, complementing the book. The expected application performance is studied and reported for extensive performance experiments on different testbeds, including grids with worldwide distribution.
The book is targeted at graduate students, advanced professionals, and researchers in both academia and industry. Readers can raise their level of knowledge about methodologies for programming contemporary parallel and distributed systems, and, furthermore, they can gain practical experience in using distributed software. Practical examples show how the complementary online material can easily be adopted in various new projects.
IS offshoring
(2010)
Information systems (IS) offshoring describes the transfer of IS services to an offshoring service provider in a near or far away country. It has received growing attention in the past and there is a strong momentum in shifting IS services abroad. Markus Westner examines the IS offshoring phenomenon from the perspective of German companies. He first provides an overview of the current literature in the field of IS offshoring. Based on interviews with 47 industry experts, evaluation criteria for selecting projects for offshoring are identified. Finally, the author examines determinants of IS offshore project success in German companies based on a statistical analysis of 304 projects using structural equation modeling (PLS).
