The transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources requires efficient energy conversion and storage technologies, with hydrogen having great potential as a medium- to long-term storage solution. Proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers are particularly well-suited for producing green hydrogen from renewable energy thanks to their rapid response to fluctuating power inputs. Precise modeling of PEM electrolyzers is crucial for optimizing their performance and developing effective control strategies. Consequently, various models are developed in the literature, ranging from simple to highly precise models. In this work, four electrolyzers out of the literature are modeled in terms of their electrochemical behavior using a semi-empirical model that is widely applied in the literature. The required electrochemical parameters are identified using a particle swarm optimization algorithm. Furthermore, the thermal behavior of two electrolyzers is characterized, with the necessary thermal parameters being determined based on experimental data. The obtained electrochemical parameters should be in the range close to the reference data, which is not fullfilled for all of the obtained parameters. Nevertheless, the calculated polarization curves based on these parameters show excellent agreement with the experimental data, exhibiting mean average percentage errors of less than one percent. The thermal characteristics of the investigated stacks are also represented very precicely by the model based on the identified thermal parameters. The obtained thermal parameters indicate that the thermal capacitance of the stack increases with enhanced nominal power, while the thermal resistance decreases as the nominal power increases.
In this work, the dehumidification performance of a flat-plate adsorption bed, where granular silica gel (Siogel) is packed into the gas side of a GLX50 plate heat exchanger and used as a solid desiccant for HVAC applications, is experimentally investigated. Two operating parameters are considered in detail. First, the influence of inlet air velocity is studied at three values (0.83, 1.06, and 1.22 m/s), while keeping the inlet air temperature at 24 °C and the relative humidity at 70%. Second, the effect of changing the inlet relative humidity (46%, 75%, and 95%) is investigated at an air velocity of approximately 1.06 m/s and an inlet temperature of 20 °C. Transient temperatures and humidity ratios are monitored at the inlet and outlet of the bed, allowing the instantaneous moisture uptake and the accumulated water loading to be evaluated over the adsorption period. The results confirm that increasing air velocity accelerates the adsorption kinetics and increases the total amount of moisture removed. At 1.22 m/s, the cumulative water uptake is approximately 43% higher than at 0.83 m/s under similar inlet conditions. Higher inlet relative humidity also enhances both instantaneous and total adsorption due to the larger driving potential for mass transfer, but at the expense of a shorter effective adsorption period, as the desiccant saturates faster. The flat-plate bed provides relatively uniform air–desiccant contact and low flow resistance, so that the outlet air can be dried to about 35:40% RH after a few hours, even at the highest flow rate. The data and trends reported here are useful for designing and sizing plate-type desiccant beds, as well as for integrating compact, thermally driven dehumidifiers into HVAC systems in hot and humid climates.
Blindleistungs-Verhalten (P-Q-Verhalten) beschreiben. Beim Blindleistungsverhalten
werden i. d. R. zulässige cosφ-Bereiche definiert. Typische Werte sind hierfür
cosφ ≤ 0,95 für den I. und II. Quadranten sowie cosφ ≤ 0,925 für den III. Quadranten.
The transition of power systems from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources is driving profound changes across all voltage levels of the electrical grid, altering active power (P) as well as reactive power (Q) behavior. This transformation involves a shift from predominantly top-down, unidirectional electricity flows to bidirectional and increasingly complex flow patterns, fundamentally altering the operation and utilization of power systems. The growing integration of distributed energy resources (DERs), heat pumps (HPs), and electric vehicles (EVs) is particularly impacting lower voltage levels, which are evolving from traditionally consumer-dominated networks into active participants in energy dynamics. These developments have a significant influence on reactive power behavior, with many countries already reporting notable changes due to increased Q contributions from lower voltage levels. As bidirectional flows and decentralized generation increase, understanding and forecasting reactive power trends at these voltage levels becomes essential for ensuring grid stability and efficiency. This paper addresses the challenges of long-term Q forecasting in general by analyzing reactive power behavior in grids, the main influencing grid parameters and introducing existing approaches and concepts, analyzing their applicability, and discussing the associated challenges and methodologies. By shedding light on this underexplored area, the study aims to contribute to the development of advanced long-term reactive power forecasting methods and highlighting research trends.
Enhanced sector coupling across electricity, mobility, and heating sectors leads to higher efforts for distribution grid upgrades. Based on a case study, this paper evaluates the role of district heating networks in reducing electrical distribution grid reinforcements and compares their economic viability against a building-specific heat supply using heat pumps. A detailed energy system model is used to analyze two building energy renovation scenarios: a business-as-usual scenario with a 1 % annual renovation rate and an ambitious scenario with a rate of 2 %. Using a two-step optimization, the impact of different district heating network penetration levels on the distribution grid is evaluated, followed by an ex-post analysis to incorporate a simultaneity factor into district heating networks. Overall, district heating networks can reduce distribution grid reinforcements, but the associated savings alone do not justify their construction, particularly in the ambitious renovation scenario. In the business-as-usual scenario, a district heating network can reduce reinforcement costs by up to 71 %. However, in the ambitious scenario, grid reinforcements are already reduced due to lower heat peak demand, and the maximal reinforcement cost savings only amount to 35 %. Compared economically, district heating networks are cost-competitive with building-specific heating only in the business-as-usual scenario, up to a heat supply share of 70 % and in the ambitious scenario, up to 40 %. In both scenarios, a district heating network can be a robust solution to lower macroeconomic costs for a carbon-neutral heat supply.
The determination of the optimal location, types and size of additional required reactive power sources is a main interest of Reactive Power Planning (RPP) investigations and of this paper. The planning problem addresses the maintenance of voltage stability, which is an ancillary service in Germany, and can be formulated as a mixed-integer optimization prob-lem. The aim of this work is a techno-economically efficient coverage of the deficient steady state voltage deviation demands (VDD) by placing new reactive power sources with adequate size or extending the reactive power potential of existing sources. An optimization model is set up to solve the planning problem by using load flow voltage sensitivities, which quantify and evaluate the technical efficiency of new reactive power sources in relation to the present voltage deviation demands. Operating and investment costs are used as economic decision parameters. Within an application example, which is carried out with an exemplary transmission system, the solution of the planning problem is discussed.
