We investigate the mechanical and microstructural properties of a diamond-like carbon coating (DLC) which is deposited by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) onto an alumina/aluminosilicate glass composite used for biomedical applications. Ball-on-ring tests yield a fracture strength that is essentially influenced by the surface topology/roughness. The surface topology of the coating is investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Tribology tests and nanoindentation represent the wear resistance and hardness; these are properties that are mainly influenced by the microstructural properties of the DLC coating. This microstructure is investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and analyzed by parallel electron energy loss spectroscopy (PEELS). For the general applicability of the coated composite, the interfacial adhesion of the DLC coating on the comparably rough substrate (roughness amplitudes and wavelengths are in the micrometer range) is important. Therefore, we focus on TEM investigations that show the interface to be free of gaps and pores that we, together with a characteristic microstructure adjacent to the interface, relate to the excellent adhesion. The interlayer consists of a high density of SiC grains, part of them directly bound to the substrate, and part of them bound to other SiC grains. This interlayer is followed by an essentially different region of the coating as concerns the microstructure; this region consists of nanocrystalline diamond particles embedded in an amorphous carbon matrix. It is this heterogeneous microstructure to which we attribute (i) the good adhesion based upon the interface stabilizing SiC grains, and (ii) the high hardness and wear resistance based upon the diamond nanocrystals in the coating.

The morphology and microstructure of an Al2O3 glass composite (trade name In-Ceram, Vita Zahnfabrik) were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The composite was produced by infiltration of a lanthanum-based glass throughout a porous Al2O3 body. This alumina body was formed by three classes of particles differing in size and shape: faceted particles typically ≤4 μm in diameter, platelets of average diameter 8 μm, 1.5 μm thickness, and small spheres 0.4 μm in diameter. The outstanding strength properties of the composite (600 MPa, ball-on-ring test) are a result of the high wetting capability of the glass phase on the Al2O3 surface. In addition, plastic strain relaxation in the faceted particles by dislocation formation compensates partially for residual stresses and impedes crack formation at the glass/Al2O3 interface.

A solution methodology is introduced for the efficient computation of the acoustic field over restricted domains and for a frequency window. Typically, such partial field solutions include, for example, surfaces enclosing the radiating structure or even single points in the computational domain. The multiple-frequency partial-field (MFPF) method starts out by reformulating the finite element matrix system into a suitable shifted form. The DtN map is used as a radiation boundary condition and is interpreted as a low rank update of the matrix problem. The shifted standard form is then approximated by a rational matrix-valued Padé approximant and solved simultaneously over a frequency range. To obtain the Padé approximation, a banded unsymmetric Lanczos process is applied on the standard shifted form exploiting the matrix Padé-via-Lanczos connection. Numerical examples show the feasibility of the outlined procedure.

Statement of problems: Computer-aided design/computer-assisted machining systems offer the possibility of fabricating restorations from one machinable ceramic block. Whether multishaded blocks improve esthetic results and are a viable alternative to individually stained ceramics has not been fully determined.
Purpose: The aim of this investigation was to examine the effect of multishaded blocks on the esthetic appearance of all-ceramic CEREC crowns and compare these crowns with single-shade and stained restorations.
Material and methods: Ten subjects were included in this study. For each subject, 6 different crowns were milled with the use of a CEREC machine. One crown was milled from each of the following machinable ceramic materials: CEREC Vitablocs Mark II in classic colors; Vitablocs Mark II in 3D-Master colors; Vitablocs Mark II in either classic or 3D-Master colors, with additional staining; Megadenta Bloxx multishaded; Mark II experimental multilayer; and an experimental multilayer leucite ceramic. Three independent examiners assessed the esthetic appearance of crowns fabricated to match each subject's anterior tooth shade. A scale of 1 to 6 was used to score the shade match and esthetic adaptation of each crown, with 1 representing excellent characteristics and 3.5 serving as the threshold for clinical acceptability. The examiners' scores were averaged, and the mean values were analyzed with the Wilcoxon signed rank test (P<or=.05).
Results: Only individually stained Mark II restorations achieved a mean score below the threshold of 3.5 for all 10 subjects. These restorations were significantly more esthetic (P<or=.05) than restorations fabricated from all other materials except the Mark II experimental multilayer ceramic. The second best results were obtained for crowns made from single-shaded Mark II 3D-Master blocks: 6 out of 10 restorations were scored below 3.5. Two of the layered materials (Mark II experimental and Bloxx) followed with 5 acceptable restorations out of 10.
Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, the results provide no evidence that multicolored machinable ceramics improve the esthetics of all-ceramic crowns.

In this paper, the high-temperature fatigue behavior and residual stress states of a Ti-6Al-4V alloy are investigated after mechanical surface treatment. In particular, the two surface treatments investigated, laser shock peening and deep rolling, were observed to result in significantly different residual stress states. The consequent isothermal fatigue behavior at elevated temperatures, characterized using cyclic deformation curves, are discussed in terms of the stability of the near-surface work hardening and compressive residual stresses. Despite pronounced relaxation of the residual stresses, both laser shock peening and deep rolling led to a significant improvement in the cyclic deformation behavior and, hence, increased fatigue lifetimes at elevated temperatures as compared to untreated materials states.
It is well known that mechanical surface treatments, such as deep rolling, shot peening and laser shock peening, can significantly improve the fatigue behavior of highly-stressed metallic components. Deep rolling (DR) is particularly attractive since it is possible to generate, near the surface, deep compressive residual stresses and work hardened layers while retaining a relatively smooth surface finish. In the present investigation, the effect of DR on the low-cycle fatigue (LCF) and high-cycle fatigue (HCF) behavior of a Ti–6Al–4V alloy is examined, with particular emphasis on the thermal and mechanical stability of the residual stress states and the near-surface microstructures. Preliminary results on laser shock peened Ti–6Al–4V are also presented for comparison. Particular emphasis is devoted to the question of whether such surface treatments are effective for improving the fatigue properties at elevated temperatures up to ∼450 °C, i.e. at a homologous temperature of ∼0.4T/Tm (where Tm is the melting temperature). Based on cyclic deformation and stress/life (S/N) fatigue behavior, together with the X-ray diffraction and in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations of the microstructure, it was found that deep rolling can be quite effective in retarding the initiation and initial propagation of fatigue cracks in Ti–6Al–4V at such higher temperatures, despite the almost complete relaxation of the near-surface residual stresses. In the absence of such stresses, it is shown that the near-surface microstructures, which in Ti–6Al–4V consist of a layer of work hardened nanoscale grains, play a critical role in the enhancement of fatigue life by mechanical surface treatment.
Mechanical surface treatments, such as deep rolling, shot peening and laser shock peening, can significantly improve the fatigue behavior of highly stressed metallic components. Deep rolling is an especially attractive technique since it is possible to generate deep, near-surface compressive residual stresses and work hardening while retaining a relatively smooth surface finish. Indeed, this technique is best known for increasing the fatigue strength and lifetime of steel components such as crankshafts. Although most work on deep rolling has been on steels, recently it has also been applied with reasonable success to titanium alloys. Accordingly, in this investigation, we examine the effect of deep rolling on the high-cycle fatigue behavior of Ti-6Al-4V, with particular emphasis on the thermal and mechanical stability of the residual stress states and near-surface microstructures. Preliminary results on laser shock peened Ti-6Al-4V are also presented for comparison. In addition, we examine whether these surface treatments are effective in retaining fatigue strength at the higher temperatures of 300 to 450C. Based on the cyclic deformation and stress/life behavior, together with the X-ray and microstructural observations, it is found that deep rolling can be quite effective in retarding the initiation and initial propagation of fatigue cracks in Ti-6Al-4V at such higher temperatures, despite the almost complete relaxation of the residual stresses at the surface. This clearly implies that, in addition to residual stresses, near-surface microstructures, which in Ti-6Al-4V consist of ultrafine near-surface nanostructures, play a critical role in the enhancement of fatigue lifetimes by mechanical surface treatments.
Introduction The most well known effect of mechanical surface treatments on metallic materials is the improvement in fatigue properties. It is therefore not surprising that most of the archival literature on mechanical surface treatments, such as shot peening, deep rolling and laser shock peening, deals with the effect of near-surface properties on fatigue behavior. Most of these studies, however, are confined to room temperature fatigue behavior; in comparision, the effect of mechanical surface treatment on fatigue behavior at high temperatures has been rarely investigated [1-5]. The reason for this disparity can be found in the popular belief that fatigue strength improvement by mechanical surface treatments is mainly due to the presence of compressive residual stresses, and since such stresses should anneal out at elevated temperatures, mechanical surface treatments for high temperature applications would appear questionable. However, this view may be over simplistic as there is always a possibility that the residual stresses may be at least partially stable at elevated temperatures [6]; in addition, other factors may be involved, such as the nature of the near-surface microstructure. Accordingly, it is the objective of this study to examine the role of mechanical surface treatments on the high temperature fatigue behavior of several metallic engineering materials. Moreover, it is the aim of this work to clarify what are the critical temperature "thresholds' at which near-surface microstructures and residual stresses become unstable and whether this can explain the observed fatigue behavior.
A lot of dental alloys are available on the market. Among these alloys, there are the conventional alloys, the so called casting alloys used without ceramics, the bonding alloys used with high fusing ceramics and the universal alloys used without or with low fusing ceramics. It is im portant to know the physical and mechanical properties of these materials but also their biocompatibility and their resistance to corrosion. Dental alloys are generally placed in the mouth for many years, they must not induce adverse biological reactions such as gingival swelling and erythema, mucosal pain and lichenoid reactions. Although these troubles are often caused not by the materials itself (1, 2), they can be induced by the metallic ions released during their corrosion. In order to decrease the risks to the health, it is necessary to study the corrosion of the dental alloys. Currently, the ISO 10271 Standard (3), describes 3 different corrosion tests: a static immersion test (chemical corrosion), an electrochemic al test and a tarnish test. However, there are no indications yet about the possible interpretation of test results. In this paper, we propose a method to compare and classify the dental alloys in relation to their chemical and electrochemical corrosion results. METHODS: The material tested are pure metals such as gold, palladium, silver, copper and zinc as well as dental alloys which are commercially sold (see Table 1). 54 different materials have been tested. A minimum of four samples of each material were tested by electrochemic al corrosio n and a minimum of three in chemical test. The samples were cast and prepared as indicated by the manufacturer and by the ISO 10271. For the electrochemical test, the samples are in the form of disks 11 mm in diameter. They are tested with a potentiostat/galvanostat Voltalab Model 21. For the chemical test, the samples are rectangular with the dimensions 35X10X1.7 mm. The solution used and the operating conditions are described in the ISO 10271. The concentration of metallic ions released is measured by Induced Coupled Plasma
This paper addresses the efficient solution of acoustic problems in which the primary interest is obtaining the solution only on restricted portions of the domain but over a wide range of frequencies. The exterior acoustics boundary value problem is approximated using the finite element method in combination with the Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) map. The restriction domain problem is formally posed in transfer function form based on the finite element solution. In order to obtain the solution over a range of frequencies, a matrix-valued Padé approximation of the transfer function is employed, using a two-sided block Lanczos algorithm. This approach provides a stable and efficient representation of the Padé approximation. In order to apply the algorithm, it is necessary to reformulate the transfer function due to the frequency dependency in the nonreflecting boundary condition. This is illustrated for the case of the DtN boundary condition, but there is no restriction on the approach which can also be applied to other radiation boundary conditions. Numerical tests confirm that the approach offers significant computational speed-up.
A Krylov subspace projection method which provides simultaneous solutions of the Helmholtz equation at multiple frequencies in one solution step is presented. The projector is obtained with an unsymmetric block Lanczos algorithm applied to a transfer function derived from a finite element discretization. This approach is equivalent to a matrix-valued Padé approximation of the transfer function. The proposed method is an extension of the formulation presented in [J. Comput. Acoust. 8 (2000) 223] to unsymmetric systems and allows the treatment of a much wider range of practical problems, including near-field and fluid–structure interaction computations
Effects of Deep Rolling on the Fatigue Behavior of Ti-6Al-4V at Ambient and Elevated Temperatures
(2003)
The low-cycle and high-cycle fatigue behavior of the Mg-base wrought alloy AZ31 is investigated in the temperature range 20– 300 °C using total-strain-controlled push – pull tests. It is shown that the mechanical properties of the material are substantially influenced by the direction dependent formation of deformation twins and resulting deformation asymmetry. As a consequence tensile mean stresses develop during total-strain-controlled fatigue tests without mean strain.
A management system for dynamic and interorganizational design processes in chemical engineering
(2004)
Design processes in chemical engineering are hard to manage. The design process is highly creative, many design alternatives are explored, and both unexpected and planned feedback occurs frequently. Thus, it is inherently difficult to manage the workflow in design processes, i.e., to coordinate the effort of experts working on tasks such as creation of flow diagrams, steady-state and dynamic simulations, etc. Conventional project and workflow management systems support the management of design processes only to a limited extent. In contrast, the management system AHEAD is designed specifically for dynamic design processes. In addition, AHEAD supports the management of interorganizational design processes. A subprocess may be delegated to a contractor, which receives information only about those parts of the overall process that are relevant for the contract. The management systems of the client and the contractor are coupled at run time such that both systems maintain up-to-date state information. The contract may be changed at any time according to the rules of a pre-defined change protocol. To validate this approach to the management of dynamic and interorganizational design processes, the AHEAD system has been applied to a comprehensive case study, namely the conceptual design and basic engineering of a chemical plant for producing polyamide 6.

Aims
Drug-eluting stents (DES) represent a major advance in interventional cardiology. Along with the success shown, current DES also present limitations related to the presence of polymer-coating, fixed drug, and dose used. With the ISAR (Individualized Drug-Eluting Stent System to Abrogate Restenosis) project, a DES system has been developed that permits individualized choice of the drug and dose to use for the given patient. The objective of this prospective dose finding study was to assess the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of a polymer-free on-site stent coating with increasing rapamycin doses.
Methods and results
In this dose finding study, 602 patients were sequentially enrolled in four groups: microporous bare metal stent (BMS), DES stents coated with a 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0% rapamycin solution. The angiographic in-segment restenosis rate at follow-up angiography was the primary study endpoint. In-segment restenosis was significantly reduced from 25.9% with BMS to 18.9, 17.2, and 14.7% with 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0% rapamycin-eluting stents, respectively (P=0.024). Similarly, the need for target lesion revascularization at 1 year follow-up was reduced from 21.5% with BMS to 16.4, 12.6, and 8.8% with 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0% rapamycin-eluting stents, respectively (P=0.006).
Conclusion
The placement of polymer-free stents coated on-site with rapamycin is feasible and safe. Furthermore, a dose-dependent efficacy in restenosis prevention is achievable with this new DES concept.
Objective
The risk of in-stent restenosis can be considerably reduced by stents eluting cytostatic compounds. We created a novel drug-eluting stent system that includes several new features in the rapidly evolving field of stent-based drug delivery.
Methods and Results
The aim of the present study was the preclinical evaluation of a stent-coating system permitting individual, on-site coating of stents with a unique microporous surface allowing for individualizable, dose-adjustable, and multiple coatings with identical or various compounds, designated ISAR (individualizable drug-eluting stent system to abrogate restenosis). Stents were coated with 0.75% rapamycin solution, and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-based determination of drug release profile indicated drug release for >21 days. Rapamycin-eluting microporous (REMP) stents implanted in porcine coronary arteries were safe. To determine the efficacy of REMP stents, this novel drug-eluting stent platform was compared with the standard sirolimus-eluting stent. At 30 days, in-stent neointima formation in porcine coronary arteries was similar in both groups, yielding a significant decrease of neointimal area and injury-dependent neointimal thickness compared with bare-metal stents.
Conclusion
The ISAR drug-eluting stent platform as a novel concept for stent coating allows for a safe, effective, on-site stent coating process, thus justifying further clinical evaluation to decrease in-stent restenosis in humans.
In-stent neointima formation can be successfully attenuated by drug-eluting stents. We introduce a novel conceptual approach for stent-coating that allows for dose-adjustable, on-site stent coating process if desired with multiple compounds. Microporous stents coated with rapamycin proved safe and effective for the limitation of neointima formation in a porcine coronary stent model.
The cyclic deformation behavior of deep rolled and polished aluminium wrought alloy AlMg4,5Mn in the temperature range 20-300°C has been investigated. Results of quasistatic tension and compression tests of untreated specimens in the temperature range 20-300°C are presented. To characterize the fatigue behavior for stress-controlled tests as a function of test temperature, s-n curves, cyclic deformations curves and mean strains as a function of number of cycles are given. The residual stress- and work hardening states near the surface of deep rolled aluminium alloy AlMg4.5Mn before and after fatigue tests were investigated by X-ray diffraction methods. The investigated AlMn4.5Mn aluminium alloy shows cyclic hardening until fracture at all stress amplitudes in stress-controlled fatigue tests at 25-150°C. With increasing temperature the deformation behavior shifts from cyclic hardening to cyclic softening. Below a certain stress amplitude at a given temperature deep rolling led to a reduction of the plastic strain amplitude as compared to the untreated state through cyclically stable near-surface work hardening as indicated by stable FWHM-values. This reduction in plastic strain amplitude is associated with enhanced fatigue lives. The effectiveness of deep rolling is governed by the cyclic and thermal stability of near-surface work hardening rather than macroscopic compressive residual stresses. Since near-surface work hardening is known to retard crack initiation, deep rolling is also effective in temperature- and stress ranges where macroscopic compressive residual stresses have relaxed almost completely, but where near-surface work hardening prevails. Above certain stress amplitudes and temperatures, deep rolling has no beneficial effect on the fatigue behavior of AlMg4.5Mn. This is a consequence of instable near-surface microstructures, especially instable near-surface work hardening.
Several specimens of AZ31 magnesium alloy were taken in different directions from a rolled plate and subjected to tensile, compressive and four-point bending tests. Tensile and compressive tests allowed to characterize the mechanical properties of the material in the rolling and cross rolling directions. The bending tests were carried out in four different specimen types to take the effect of the anisotropy induced by the rolling procedure itself into account. Six strain gages per specimen allowed to observe the evolution of the strain with the bending moment during the tests. All bending specimens were bent until a total compressive deformation of 2.5 %. It was observed that the corresponding tensile strain was significant lower and slightly different for each specimen type. In addition, a characteristic non-uniform distribution of deformation twinning was observed. The induced residual stresses after bending were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and incremental hole-drilling (IHD). Due to the different mechanical behavior in tension and compression, an asymmetric residual stress distribution after bending could be observed. The neutral axis was, in all cases, shifted towards the tensile side. This observation agrees with the strain measurements during bending tests.
Tire model TMeasy
(2007)
This paper describes the semi-physical tire model TMeasy for vehicle dynamics and handling analyses, as it was applied in the ‘low frequency tire models’ section of the research programme tire model performance test (TMPT). Despite more or less weak testing input data, the effort for the application of TMeasy remains limited due to its consequent ‘easy to use’ orientation. One particular feature of TMeasy is the wide physical meaning of its smart parameter set, which allows to sustain the identification process even under uncertain conditions. After a general introduction, the modelling concept of TMeasy is compactly described in this paper. Taking the standard tire interface (STI) to multibody simulation system (MBS) software into account, the way to apply TMeasy is briefly shown. This includes three selected examples of application. The final comments of the authors on TMPT describe the experiences and earnings received during the participation in that programme.
Objectives: The mechanical properties and seeding with endothelial cells were investigated in fresh and cryopreserved human umbilical vein.
Methods: Human umbilical veins (HUV) were frozen in Euro-Collins/1M DMSO at –1°C/min and stored in liquid nitrogen. Stress-strain relationships of fresh and thawed veins were determined in an uniaxial tension-testing rig. HUV endothelial cells (HUVEC) were seeded onto denuded HUV under static conditions and grown for 3d. Luminal surfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. Calcein-stained cells were seeded hyperconfluently to determine the cell retention capacity of fresh and cryopreserved veins.
Results: The stress-strain relationships of HUV followed a biphasic pattern typical for natural vessels. Neither the failure stress (2.71±0.36 vs. 3.25±0.97 N, n=3) nor the displacement required to achieve failure (9.73±0.9 vs. 7.43±2.07mm, n=3) were altered by cryopreservation. The burst pressure was estimated as approx. 1000mm Hg within the limitations of the uniaxial model. HUVEC seeded onto denuded HUV formed patches (at 9E3 cells per cm2) or an almost confluent endothelium (at 3E4 cells per cm2) within three days. The capacity to retain seeded HUVEC of denuded HUV was not altered by cryopreservation (1.15±0.08E5 vs. 1.26±0.14E5 cells per cm2, n=6).
Conclusions: The burst pressure of HUV seems to be sufficiently high for the human arterial circulation and is not altered by cryopreservation. HUVEC can establish a confluent endothelium on denuded HUV. Therefore HUV appears to be a suitable storable scaffold for vascular tissue engineering.
A new bone substitute, consisting of hydroxylapatite and calcium sulphate, was prepared in two formulations and analysed for its mechanical strength and antibiotic elution. The bone substitute PerOssal has osteoconductive and degradable properties. The material has a built-in capillary structure, which results in an immediate fluid uptake. Antibiotics absorbed to the bone substitute resulted in a prolonged release rate. Mechanical strength was investigated by an unconfined compression test up to failure under both wet and dry conditions for both formulations of the bone substitute. Antibiotic release was analysed microbiologically for two antibiotics, vancomycin and gentamicin, over an elution period of 10 days using the agar diffusion method. The drug release analysis resulted in a prolonged release rate of both antibiotics over 10 days. In vitro the amount of gentamicin and vancomycin eluted at day 10. From one pellet still exceeded the minimal inhibitory concentration of most aetiologically important pathogens. Formulation two of the present bone substitute is significantly harder in both wet and dry conditions when compared to formulation one. Both formulations lose strength in the wet condition relative to their performance in the dry condition. However, formulation two is as hard under wet conditions as formulation one is when dry.PerOssal is a suitable new degradable osteoconductive bone substitute that can be loaded with antibiotic solutions, which are released in effective doses over 10 days. The mechanical strength of PerOssal is sufficient to support cancellous bone defects in non-weight-bearing areas or in combination with osteosynthesis.
A proposal for the classification of dental alloys according to their resistance to corrosion
(2007)
Objectives
The purpose of this study was to establish a method to compare and classify dental alloys in relation to their resistance to corrosion.
Methods
Alloy samples and pure metal samples were prepared and tested in chemical and electrochemical corrosion according to ISO 10271. For electrochemical test, the rest potential versus time and a potentiodynamic scan were recorded. After chemical corrosion test, the ions released were analyzed by ICP (induced coupled plasma) spectroscopy.
Results
High gold alloys had a similar polarization curve than gold. The same effect was observed for Pd–base alloys, their curves were similar to the one of palladium. The ions released during chemical corrosion were non-precious metallic ions. Thereby Ni–Cr alloys were found to release the most ions. Au–Pt alloys showed the highest release of ions compared with other precious alloys but low compared with Ni–Cr. Electrochemical corrosion was more aggressive than chemical corrosion and every type of elements was etched, the higher the precious metal content, the higher the resistance to corrosion of the alloy.
Discussion
Using the recorded data, a classification system for electrochemical corrosion was developed and discussed to judge the results. Hereby were gold and zinc used as reference materials. The applied classification system defines five classes and it is proposed that alloys of class V are not acceptable. For chemical corrosion resistance, three classes were distinguished according to the quantity of metallic ions released and it is proposed that class III (100–1000 μg/cm2 week) is not acceptable. Palladium and Pd–base alloys showed a higher electrochemical and chemical corrosion resistance than gold.

Medicine Meets Engineering: Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Applied Biomechanics Regensburg
(2008)
Biomedical Engineering is defined as the science that integrates medical and engineering sciences to improve diagnosis and treatment of patients. Only by this integration progress can be achieved. Both medical and engineering sciences comprise a huge diversity in topics, so it is imaginable that Biomedical Engineering, combining these two science areas, is even more huge. Thanks to this megadisciplinary approach many breakthroughs can be achieved. More and more research groups realize this and start new research projects, which results in a rapid increase in knowledge in Biomedical Engineering. This will only benefit the main goal of Biomedical Engineering; improving diagnosis and treatment of patients when it is spread and applied. The 2nd Regensburg Applied Biomechanics conference is special in that it realized both the distribution of new knowledge and the essential integration of medical and engineering specialists. The conference dealt with the latest results in applied biomechanics, ranging from fundamental bone strength properties via bone remodeling phenomena to new implants that replace lost human functions. Also new research areas like robot surgery and tissue engineering were discussed.
The effect of laser-hybrid welds on deformation and failure behaviour of fracture mechanics specimens is investigated in order to provide quantitative prediction of damage tolerance and residual strength. The simulation of crack initiation and crack extension in hybrid welds is performed by applying GTN damage model. The identification of damage parameters requires combined numerical and experimental analyses. The tendency to crack path deviation during crack growth depends strongly on the constraint development at the interface between base and weld metal. In order to quantify the influence of local stress state on the crack path deviation, the initial crack location is varied. Finally, the results from fracture mechanics tests are compared to real component, beam-column-connection, with respect to fracture resistance.
Aerospace and automotive industries employ three main techniques to set up joints between metal and fibre reinforced plastics parts (FRP); adhesive bonding, mechanical fastening with rives/bolts and a hybrid combination. A new joint technique has been developed to combine the two advantageous mechanisms form-closure and adhesion in a fibre-friendly way. Prior is established through metal structures (pins) which are perpendicularly welded onto metal surfaces with an arc-welding-process. They intrude into the FRP during lay-up and therefore set up a first connection. The composite-matrix is responsible for latter adhesive bonding and final form closure. Finite-element-analyses of cylindrically shaped joints are carried out to get detailed knowledge of the influence of parameters like pin-number, pin-position, pin-height, pin-form sleeve-geometry, and stiffness behaviour. Long calculation times of 3D-models lead to the introduction of a corresponding 2D-axisymmetric-model which is used to run parameter-studies within a reasonable time. For this novel technique the combination of fibre-friendly form closure and adhesive bonding of interface plays a major role. A well selected amount of vertical reinforcements, their placement and geometrical dimensions will lead to a stiffer joint. Goal is to minimize fibre-deletion and overlap length to improve load-transfer and joint-strength, to reduce weight in high-strength-applications as well as the avoidance of safety rivets.
Mechanical surface treatments such as deep rolling or laser-shock peening can markedly affect the cyclic performance of light-weight alloys, especially if significant thick work hardened surface regions are induced. At room temperature, the cyclic deformation behaviour is strongly influenced by the nature of the induced near-surface microstructures provided that they remain stable during fatigue loading. At elevated temperatures, the stability of near-surface work hardening and local microstructures plays an even more important role since the process-induced residual compressive stresses are likely to anneal out partially or completely. This overview illustrates to what extent deep rolling can effect the cyclic performance of various wrought light alloys being fatigue loaded in stress control at ambient and elevated temperatures.
Flame sprayed Al-12Si coatings for the improvement of the adhesion of composite casting profiles
(2008)
In this study, flame sprayed Al-12Si coatings were produced on the surface of inlays (aluminum profiles) of composite castings parts. The aim was to enhance the strength between the joining partners inlay and cast. Due to the high surface roughness and the presence of pores in the coatings, combined with the formation of an intermetallic phase at the interface, the adhesion of flame sprayed inlays could be enhanced by a factor of 2 compared to blank inlays and by a factor of 1.3 when compared to sand-blasted inlays. However, results also show that gaps are present, mostly at the interface between the inlays and the flame sprayed coatings, and these gaps have a negative effect on the joining strength of the composite casting parts. Therefore, optimizing the adhesion of the coating on the Al profiles via an improvement in both the sand-blasting and the flame spraying parameters would be beneficial for further enhancement of the adhesion of composite casting parts.
The fatigue behaviour of materials is of particular interest for the failure prediction of materials and structures exposed to cyclic loading. For trabecular bone structures only a few sets of lifetime data have been reported in the literature and structural measures are commonly not considered. The influence of load contributions which are not aligned with the main physiological axis remains unclear. Furthermore site and species dependent relationships are not well described. In this study five different groups of trabecular bone, defined in terms of orientation, species and site were exposed to cyclic compression. In total, 108 fatigue tests were analysed. The lifetimes were found to decrease drastically when off-axis loads were applied. Additionally, species and site strongly affect fatigue lifetimes. Strains at failure were also found to be a function of orientation.

The fatigue behaviour of materials is of particular interest for the failure prediction of materials and structures exposed to cyclic loading. For trabecular bone structures only a few sets of lifetime data have been reported in the literature and structural measures are commonly not considered. The influence of load contributions not aligned with the main physiological axis remains unclear. Furthermore age effects on the fatigue behaviour are not well described. In the present study, different groups of human vertebral cancellous bone were exposed to cyclic compression. The inital modulus and therefore lifetimes were found to be highly dependent on age. The decrease in both with increasing age was much more pronounced in specimens which were not aligned with the main physiological axis. This implies that old bone is much more sensitive to (cyclic) failure loads in general but particularly to loads which are not coincident with the physiological main axis.
Repeated loadings may cause fatigue fractures in bony structures. Even if these failure types are known, data for trabecular bone exposed to cyclic loading are still insufficient as the majority of fatigue analyses on bone concentrate on cortical structures. Despite its highly anisotropic and inhomogeneous structure, trabecular bone is treated with continuum approaches in fatigue analyses. The underlying deformation and damage mechanism within trabecular specimens are not yet sufficiently investigated. In the present study different types of trabecular bone were loaded in monotonic and cyclic compression. In addition to the measurement of integral specimen deformations, optical deformation analysis was employed in order to obtain strain distributions at different scale levels, from the specimens' surface to the trabeculae level. These measurements allowed for the possibility of linking the macroscopic and microscopic mechanical behaviour of cancellous bone. Deformations were found to be highly inhomogeneous across the specimen. Furthermore strains were found to already localise at very low load levels and after few load cycles. Microcracks in individual trabeculae were induced in the very early stage of cyclic testing. The results provide evidence of the capability of the method to supply essential data on the failure behaviour of individual trabeculae in future studies.
Plastic design allows the exploitation of the full resistance of steel structures by taking advantage of stress–redistributions due to plastic strains exceeding the yield strain. Especially in seismic design the utilization of material reserves and the formation of plastic hinges play an important role. In devastating earthquakes in Northridge (USA) and Kobe (Japan) brittle fracture of welded connections in steel moment frames occurred prior to formation of plastic hinges and utilization of plastic material reserves. The subsequent research works resulted in improved design rules and recommendations for these kinds of failure. But to guarantee sufficient ductile performance of these connections also in the upper shelf region, plastic and earthquake resistant design rules should take into account degradation of strain capacity and toughness properties due to quasi static and especially seismic loading.
In the scope of the current European project “Plastotough”, the main objective is to derive quantified toughness design rules in the upper shelf based on the strain requirements opposed to strain capacities. This paper gives an overview over the research work in performance and shows recent results from experimental and numerical analyses performed within this project for monotonic and cyclic loading.

Planning a new logistics center is a quite difficult job. Depending on the requirements there are a great number of possible design versions. The planner has to consider not only the present but also the future requirements. Up to now, the planner decides on the basis of experience which system will perform the requested services best. This paper illustrates the redesign of a new order-picking system in industry supported by a simulation tool of our institute designed especially for the rough planning. With the described project the road capability of the applied simulation concept is underlined. Several versions based on the requirements were investigated and evaluated. Key figures are calculated and a recommendation depending on performance and arising expenses is given.
Fragestellung
Simulationssoftware (AnyBody Technology, V.4) berechnet.
The present paper deals with the influence of heat affected zone (henceforth HAZ) on the fracture performance of longitudinal welded linepipes in dependence on constraint level. It has been shown that toughness values of HAZ obtained from standard fracture mechanics tests lead to uneconomic linepipe design for two reasons. The first reason is that laboratory specimens with higher constraint level generally exhibit lower fracture resistance compared to flawed linepipes. The second one has to do with a higher probability of cleavage failure occurrence in the laboratory specimen than in the linepipes due to larger areas of lower toughness (so called local brittle zones (LBZ)) intersected by crack front. In recent years numerous studies have been initiated with the objective to quantify the constraint level and thus to allow for less conservative linepipe safety assessment by applying constraint corrected toughness values. However, the main focus of these studies has hitherto been on the homogeneous materials, failing to account for the possible effects of different microstructures within the heterogeneous HAZ. This paper seeks to close this gap by reporting on results from tests on fracture mechanics specimens of a high strength X80 steel, i.e. SENB and SENT specimens as well as results from ring expansion tests. Both, deep and shallow cracks are inserted in the fracture mechanics specimens and rings targeting the fusion line (FL). By varying the initial crack size and sample type, different constraint levels are achieved and subsequently quantified using numerical methods. Besides constraint observations, post metallographic analyses are performed to identify exact HAZ microstructure involved at the crack tip. Finally, the influence of HAZ properties, flaw size and geometry on the failure behaviour of the linepipes has been demonstrated and assessed. Based on the combination of the results from constraint studies and the post metallographic analyses, the methodology is proposed which enables simple quantitative prediction of toughness values for safe and economic design of linepipes with flaws located in HAZ.
finite element simulation of sheet metal forming, shell elements are widely used. The limits of applicability of the shell elements are sometimes disregarded, which leads to an error in predictions of important values such as springback geometry. The underlying kinematic assumptions of the shell elements do not hold where the thickness of In the metal sheet approaches the value of the radius of curvature. Complex three-dimensional material behavior effects cannot be represented precisely as the result of the simplified kinematics. Here we present a model adaptivity scheme based on a model error indicator. The model-adaptive technique presented in this paper aides to resolve only the critical areas of the structure with a three-dimensional discretization while keeping reasonable computational cost by utilizing shell elements for the rest of the structure. The model error indicator serves as a guide for subsequent automatic adaptive re-meshing of the work-piece followed by a model-adaptive finite element analysis. The accuracy of the approximation obtained by the model-adaptive technique coincides well with that of a more expensive solution obtained with solid elements only.
Vortex-Generator Pairs for Vortex-Induced Heat-Transfer Enhancement in Heat-Exchanger Channels
(2010)
The objective of the presented work is to investigate possibilities for increasing the heattransfer in heat-exchanger channels for aircraft applications by using flow-manipulating devices. Focal point of the investigation are different arrangements of vortex-generator pairs within a generic heat-exchanger channel. The DLR URANS CFD solver THETA has been used to carry out numerical simulations of the laminar flow within a rectangular channel with integrated vortex generators. In particular, the analysis of the interaction of generated vortices with the stratified thermal boundary layer, the impact of vortical flow structures on heated walls and the enforced mixed-convection flow is of special interest. The final goal is the evaluation of the applicability of oppositely arranged vortex-generator pairs for the enhancement of vortex-induced heat-transfer.
To detect convective gas flow inside the large airways during high frequency oscillated ventilation (HFOV) the fluorinated contrast gas Heptafluoropropane was used for 19F-MRI. In a first study the comparison between constant flow measurements and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations provided a good agreement. In a following experiment oscillated flow was applied to a lung phantom consisting of ventilation bag and long pipe. The pressure wave inside the pipe was explored point-by-point and corresponding velocities were determined. With these experiments it could be shown for the first time that flow measurement during HFOV using fluorinated contrast gas is feasible.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and experimental investigations on a generic model of the trachea have been carried out focusing on the impact of an endotracheal tube (ETT) on the resulting flow regime. It could be shown that detailed modelling of the airway management devices is essential for proper flow prediction, but secondary details as Murphy Eyes can be neglected. Models with bending and connector promote the formation of stronger secondary flows and disturbances which persist for a longer time.
INTRODUCTION
Several clinical studies demonstrated long-term adjacent-level effects after implantation of spinal fusion devices[1]. These effects have been reported as adjacent joint degeneration and the development of new symptoms correlating with adjacent segment degeneration[2] and the trend has therefore gone to motion preservation devices; however, these effects have not been understood very well and have not been investigated thoroughly[3].
The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of varying the stiffness of spinal fusion devices on the adjacent vertebral levels. Disc forces, moments and facet joint forces were analyzed.
METHODS
The AnyBody Modeling System was used to compute the in-vivo muscle and joint reaction forces of a musculoskeletal model. The full body model used in this study consists of 188 muscle fascicles in the lumbar spine and more than 1000 individual muscle branches in total. The model has been proposed by de Zee et al.[3], validated by Rasmussen et al.[4] and by Galibarov et al.[5]. The new model[5] determines the individual motions between vertebrae based on the equilibrium between forces acting on the vertebrae from muscles and joints and the passive stiffness in disks and ligaments, figure 1a. An adult of 1.75 m and 75 kg with a spinal implant in L4L5 was modeled. This model was subjected to a flexion-extension motion using different elastic moduli to analyze and compare to a non-implanted scenario. The analyzed variables were vertebral motion, the disc reaction forces and moments, as well as facet joint forces in the treated and the adjacent levels: L2L3, L3L4, L4L5 and L5-Sacrum.
RESULTS
When introducing a spinal fusion device in the L4L5 joint the reaction forces and moments decreased in this joint with stiffer devices leading to lower joint loads. However, in the adjacent joints, L3L4 and L5Sacrum, an increase was observed when implanting stiffer devices. Similar trends could be found for the L2L3 joint. The loads in the facet joints showed the same trends. While introducing a spinal fusion device reduced the facet joint forces in the treated joint, the loads in the adjacent facet joints were increased according to the stiffness of the implanted device, figure 1b.
DISCUSSION
While the treated disc joint showed reduced motion and loads, the adjacent levels demonstrated a significant increase. In particular, the increased facet joint forces in the adjacent levels can lead to adjacent level facet pain or accelerated facet joint degeneration. Introducing a device resulted in preventing facet contact and therefore facet joint loads, even using the device with the lowest stiffness.
CONCLUSION
The presented model shows that clinical complications such as facet joint degeneration in adjacent levels after implantation of spinal fusion device are consistent with the change in the mechanical-stimulus distribution in the system.
On modelling spine curvature dependent on muscular and external forces in multibody dynamics system
(2011)
This paper presents a computational approach for investigating effect of muscular and external forces on curvature of the lumbar spine. Multibody dynamics system is used to compute the lumbar spine curvature using a force-dependent kinematics facility, e.g. this method allows releasing some degrees of freedom in order to be computed based on the current load configuration.

The corrosion behaviour of WE43 magnesium alloys using the mini cell system was studied. Voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy were applied to study on the one hand the effect of microstructure of the working electrode and on the other hand the effect of proteins in the electrolyte. Two types of alloy samples were produced (i) by permanent mould casting and (ii) by gas atomization followed by extrusion. The results showed that the microstructure was strongly influenced by the production process. The extruded samples showed an improved homogeneity of phase distribution compared with cast samples as it was aimed for. Due to increased homogeneity it was expected to find higher corrosion resistance. However, the electrochemical results are contradictory and suggest an additional phase in the extruded microstructure. Using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) the secondary magnesium rare earths (RE) phase of extruded samples showed differing composition than of cast samples as well as additional oxide phases. After the samples were electrochemically investigated in cell medium with and without fetal calf serum (FCS), an impact of FCS was detected in voltammetry due to the length of the polarisation curve. As the tip of the mini cell in contact with the working electrode is small, developing gases tend to spread on the working electrode and break the contact of liquid to the counter electrode; which results in disrupting the current flow. This effect was more pronounced when rising the voltage and was found reduced when using electrolytes with FCS. Impedance spectra were slightly deformed by FCS, seen as a kinetic effect but not as a basic differing corrosion reaction. The insight into the effects of FCS was provided by the mini cell system as this system enables to collect entire series of measurements. In contrast of two single measurements, those series reflected the slight difference caused by FCS. The focus of the electrochemical corrosion study was set on the first half hour of immersion.

Introduction: Previous studies of bone stresses in the human lumbar spine have relied on simplified models when modeling the spinal musculature, even though muscle forces are likely major contributors to the stresses in the vertebral bones. Detailed musculoskeletal spine models have recently become available and show good correlation with experimental findings. A combined inverse dynamics and finite element analysis study was conducted in the lumbar spine to investigate the effects of muscle forces on a detailed musculoskeletal finite element model of the 4th lumbar vertebral body. Materials and Methodology: The muscle forces were computed with a detailed and validated inverse dynamics musculoskeletal spine model in a lifting situation, and were then applied to an orthotropic finite element model of the 4th lumbar vertebra. The results were compared with those from a simplified load case without muscles. Results: In general the von Mises stress was larger by 30%, and even higher when looking at the von Mises stress distribution in the superio-anterior and central part of the vertebral body and in the pedicles. Conclusion: The application of spine muscles to a finite element model showed markedly larger von Mises stress responses in the central and anterior part of the vertebral body, which can be tolerated in the young and healthy spine, but it would increase the risk of compression fractures in the elderly, osteoporotic spine.
A 3-point skeletal anchorage with taping screws for distraction osteogenesis after a Le Fort III osteotomy was applied for the first time in a severely mentally impaired patient where intraoral devices had to be avoided. All 3-force application points included the center of resistance, which allowed an optimal control on the resulting moment. A novel device for skeletal long-term retention into the nasal dorsum prevented a relapse, whereas adjustment of the midface position was observed. Fusioned three-dimensional computed tomography analysis revealed real movements not accessible by a conventional cephalometry.
In order to better understand the mechanisms of gas transport during High Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation (HFOV) Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) with contrast gases and numerical flow simulations based on Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) methods are performed. Validation of these new techniques is conducted by comparing the results obtained with simplified models of the trachea and a first lung bifurcation as well as in a cast model of the upper central airways with results achieved from conventional fluid mechanical measurement techniques like e.g. Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA). Further it is demonstrated that MRI of experimental HFOV is feasible and that Hyperpolarized 3He allows for imaging the gas re-distribution inside the lung. Finally, numerical results of oscillatory flow in a 3rd generation model of the lung as well as the impact of endotracheal tubes on the flow regime development in a trachea model are presented.
Neue Prozessstrategien zur Herstellung von Multi- Material-Bauteilen und Gradientenwerkstoffen
(2012)
First results regarding the realisation of multi-material components manufactured by Laser Beam Melting of polymers and metals are published. For realising composite structures from polymer powders by additive manufacturing, at first relevant material properties regarding compatibility have to be analysed. The paper shows the main requirements for compatibility between different materials and offers first results in form of a compatibility matrix of possible combinations for composite structures. For achieving gradient properties of additively manufactured metal parts by using composite materials the composition of alloying components in the powder and adapted process strategies are varied. As an alternative to atomizing pre-alloyed materials, mixtures of different powders are investigated.
