In recent years, More-Than-Human-Design (MTHD) has gained traction in HCI, as exemplified by a growing body of workshops and publications. As this nascent field progresses, unresolved conceptual and practical methodological challenges continue to surface. It is time for MTHD researchers to critically revisit underlying assumptions, concepts and processes that shape their work. This one-day workshop invites the DIS community to engage in two key areas: a critical discussion on anthropocentrism, a core yet multifaceted concept in MTHD, and the presentation of practical work that either reveals paradoxes within MTHD – concerning how to decenter humans and how to engage with more-than-human actors – or explores constructive ways to navigate these paradoxes. Through mapping and discussing the challenges, we aim to identify patterns and shared concerns. The workshop will culminate in an open-ended Archive of Tensions, accessible via the workshop website, serving as a collective resource for ongoing reflection and inquiry. Furthermore, the Archive will be presented in an online event and the results will be published as an article.
With the goal to facilitate societal discussion, the interactive exhibitioin “Living with Robots”, open to the public at the Science Night in Regens-burg, Germany in 2024 gave visitors the opportunity to imagine a life with robots at home, at work, for care, and education. It was set up with multiple stations of which an improvisation theatre was the highlight. Most of public presentations of robots emphasize the power of technology; the exhibition was intentionally designed to set apart from this. We chose theatric play as the medium of engagement and communication, and it was shown to be fruitful. In this paper, we draw implications from our experiences and present some preliminary results on the public opinions of living with robots.
A cooperative project focusing on the archaeology and ›shared heritage‹ of German colonialism in the former Togoland colony brings together capacities from Ghanaian and German partners in the fields of archaeology, history, ethnography, architecture/building archaeology and surveying/cartography. The project aims to document, research, preserve, and present built heritage from the German colonial period in close consultation and cooperation with local authorities and communities. Building on extensive archaeological research on German missionisation and colonisation of Togoland led by Wazi Apoh and students over the past 20 years, the project partners initially focus on archival and building archaeological research, including damage assessments and restoration/rehabilitation planning in addition to (GIS-)mapping. This report outlines preliminary results from preparatory research in 2022 and a first field season in the Volta Region of Ghana in early 2023, and it highlights possible avenues for further work.
Measured building survey

The precisely measured documentation of historical buildings by means of drawings – the building survey – serves several purposes: it is not only an important part of the scientific study of architecture, but also an essential basis for building measures in existing contexts. It is the only way to undertake well-founded research respectively detailed architectural planning, from structural improvement to conservation and restoration measures. In addition to a historical overview of building surveying as a method, this volume mainly offers practical assistance regarding the different methods for documenting historic buildings – starting from manual methods of measuring up to electronic and computer-aided utilities available today. The content is complemented by many illustrations and examples as well as an introduction to methods, that go beyond the mere graphic documentation and thus represent ways of conducting thorough building examinations. The book offers easy access to the topic of building surveying, both for students as well as for anyone dealing professionally with historic buildings
Despite the existence of societies, journals, conferences, and doctoral programs that generate increasing numbers of doctorates and research publications design research is not a coherent intellectual field with a clear boundary of its subject matter, nor an academic discipline founded on a consensual understanding of its purpose, methodology and pedagogical curriculum; subsequently, there is hardly any commonality across doctoral programs and the assessment of a doctoral degree is difficult if not impossible, so criticised the late design historian Victor Margolin. He called to unify and bound design research to solve these problems. While agreeing with his critiques and appreciating his good intentions, I will argue that his call is impractical as well as undesirable due to the social circumstances and the nature of design inquiry and the changing academic research practice which tend towards inter/transdisciplinarity. Efforts should rather be directed to join fragmented design research in an evolving and inclusive manner to establish a dynamically connected discipline.
In “Design Research: Making of a Connected Discipline Part 1”, I argue that the social circumstances and the nature of design inquiry and the changing academic research practice which tend towards inter/ trans-disciplinarity render building a unified and bounded discipline unrealistic and undesirable. In place of unified and bounded, I suggest connected to be a more viable concept to think about disciplinary
research in design. Here in Part 2, I make some suggestions to start making of a connected discipline.
