The translation of poetry is a complex, multifaceted challenge: the translated text should communicate the same meaning, similar metaphoric expressions, and also match the style and prosody of the original poem. Research on machine poetry translation is existing since 2010, but for four reasons it is still rather insufficient:
1. The few approaches existing completely lack any knowledge about current developments in both lyric theory and translation theory.
2. They are based on very small datasets.
3. They mostly ignored the neural learning approach that superseded the long-standing dominance of phrase-based approaches within machine translation.
4. They have no concept concerning the pragmatic function of their research and the resulting tools.
Our paper describes how to improve the existing research and technology for poetry translations in exactly these four points. With regards to 1) we will describe the “Poetics of Translation”. With regards to 2) we will introduce the Worlds largest corpus for poetry translations from lyrikline. With regards to 3) we will describe first steps towards a neural machine translation of poetry. With regards to 4) we will describe first steps towards the development of a poetry translation mapping system.

Dieser Artikel gibt einen Einblick in innovative Möglichkeiten des Java-Lernens sowie einen Ausblick, der zeigt, dass sich nicht nur Programmiersprachen weiterentwickeln, sondern auch der Weg, wie wir sie lernen und lehren.
Computer-based Improvements of waste collection and public transport procedures are often a part of smart city initiatives. When we envision an ideal bus network, it will primarily connect the most crowded bus stops. Similarly, an ideal waste collection vehicle will arrive at every container exactly at the time when it is fully loaded. Beyond doubt, this will reduce traffic and support environmentally friendly intentions like waste separation, as it will make more containers manageable. A difficulty of putting that vision into practice is that vehicles cannot always be where they are needed. Knowing the best time for arriving at a position is not insufficient for finding the optimal route. Therefore, we compare four different approaches to optimized routing: Regensburg, Christchurch, Malaysia, and Bangalore. Our analysis shows that the best schedules result from adapting field-tested routes frequently based on sensor measurements and route optimizing computations.
In recent years, mobility solutions have experienced a significant upswing. Consequently, it has increased the importance of forecasting the number of passengers and determining the associated demand for vehicles. We analyze all bus routes in a rural area in contrast to other work that predicts just a single bus route. Some differences in bus routes in rural areas compared to cities are highlighted and substantiated by a case study data using Roding, a town in the rural district of Cham in northern Bavaria, as an example. Data collected and we selected a random forest model that lets us determine the passenger demand, bus line effectiveness, or general user behavior. The prediction accuracy of the selected model is currently 87%. The collected data helps to build new mobility-as-a-service solutions, such as on-call buses or dynamic route optimizations, as we show with our simulation.
Programming GPUs with low-level libraries like CUDA and OpenCL is a tedious and error-prone task. Fortunately, algorithmic skeletons can shield developers from the complexity of parallel programming by encapsulating common parallel computing patterns. However, this simplification typically constrains programmers to write their applications using the GPU library employed by the skeleton implementation. In this work, we combine skeletal programming with modeldriven software development (MDSD) to increase the freedom of choice regarding the employed GPU library instead of leaving all technical decisions to the skeleton implementation. We present a code-generator that transforms models comprising skeletons, their input data and input functions to parallel C++ code while taking care of data-offset calculations. The generator has been tested using different GPU and multi-GPU communication libraries such as Thrust and CUDA-MPI. We demonstrate our novel approach to GPU programming with two example applications: affinity propagation and n-body simulation.
Any re-design of a distributed legacy system requires a migration which involves numerous complex data replication and transformation steps. Migration procedures can become quite difficult and time-consuming, especially when the setup (i.e., the employed databases, encodings, formats etc.) of the legacy and the target system fundamentally differ, which is often the case with finance data, grown over decades. We report on experiences from a real-world project: the recent migration of a customer loyalty system from a COBOL-operated mainframe to a modern service-oriented architecture. In this context, we present our easy-to-adopt solution for running most replication steps in a high-performance manner: the QuickApply HPC-software which helps minimizing the replication time, and, thereby, the overall downtime of the migration. Business processes can be kept up and running most of the time, while pre-extracted data already pass a variety of platforms and representations toward the target system. We combine the advantages of traditional migration approaches: transformations, which require the interruption of business processes are performed with static data only, they can be made undone in case of a failure and terminate quickly, due to the use of parallel processing.
Objectives
The European University Association (EUA) defines “employability” as a major goal of higher education. Therefore, competence-based orientation is an important aspect of education. The representation of a standardized job profile in the field of medical informatics, which is based on the most common labor market requirements, is fundamental for identifying and conveying the learning goals corresponding to these competences.
Methods
To identify the most common requirements, we extracted 544 job advertisements from the German job portal, STEPSTONE. This process was conducted via a program we developed in R with the “rvest” library, utilizing web crawling, web extraction, and text mining. After removing duplicates and filtering for jobs that required a bachelor's degree, 147 job advertisements remained, from which we extracted qualification terms. We categorized the terms into six groups: professional expertise, soft skills, teamwork, processes, learning, and problem-solving abilities.
Results
The results showed that only 45% of the terms are related to professional expertise, while 55% are related to soft skills. Studies of employee soft skills have shown similar results. The most prevalent terms were programming, experience, project, and server. Our second major finding is the importance of experience, further underlining how essential practical skills are.
Conclusions
Previous studies used surveys and narrative descriptions. This is the first study to use web crawling, web extraction, and text mining. Our research shows that soft skills and specialist knowledge carry equal weight. The insights gained from this study may be of assistance in developing curricula for medical informatics.
Dieser Artikel richtet sich an IT-Führungskräfte, die die Nutzung von Cloud Computing (CC) in ihren Unternehmen fördern wollen. Eine Fallstudie des Konzerns Continental AG zeigt, wie Continental CC in großem Maßstab für die Organisation nutzbar machte. Das Unternehmen ging dabei in drei Schritten vor: Nach einer Experimentierphase wurde der Einsatz zunehmend professionalisiert und CC abschließend umfangreich nutzbar gemacht. Hieraus können drei Hand-lungsempfehlungen für Führungskräfte abgeleitet werden: (1) die CC-Strategie nach dem Delivery-Modell differenzieren, (2) in die Integration von Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS)- und Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS)-Anbietern investieren und (3) den Wissenstransfer innerhalb des Unternehmens fördern, um Veränderungen zu ermöglichen.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) started the standardization process for lightweight cryptography algorithms in 2018. By the end of the first round, 32 submissions have been selected as 2nd round candidates. NIST allowed designers of 2nd round submissions to provide small updates on both their specifications and implementation packages. In this work, we introduce a benchmarking framework for evaluating the performance of NIST Lightweight Cryptography (LWC) candidates on embedded platforms. We show the features and application of the framework and explain its design rationale. Moreover, we provide information on how we aim to present up-to-date performance figures throughout the NIST LWC competition. In this paper, we present an excerpt of our software benchmarking results regarding speed and memory requirements of selected ciphers. All up-to-date results, including benchmarking different test cases for multiple variants of each 2nd round algorithm on five different microcontrollers, are periodically published to a public website. While initially only the reference implementations were available, the ability of automatically testing the performance of the candidate algorithms on multiple platforms becomes especially relevant as more optimized implementations are developed. Finally, we show how the framework can be extended in different directions: support for more target platforms can be easily added, different kinds of algorithms can be tested, and other test metrics can be acquired. The focus of this paper should rather lay on the framework design and testing methodology than on the current results, especially for reference code.
With the rising complexity and processing power of modern computer systems, the amount of MCU on a single PCB also rises. These microcontrollers often need to communicate with each other to exchange payload and control information in a bidirectional manner. Today’s well-established communication protocols in MCUs either do not fit modern transmission speed requirements or do have an inappropriate master-slave attribute, which does not allow the communication partners to have equal bus access rights. Therefore, this paper introduces an extension of the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) to allow an equally distributed access right for the communication interface between two microcontrollers. It simultaneously does fit modern transmission speed requirements of a common network interface, so that the message transmission does not constitute a bottleneck in data processing. Besides the protocol design, we do also provide a first prototype implementation, which constitutes a proof of concept.
The number of IoT devices in SCADA and ICS systems is rising quickly, especially in the domain of critical infrastructures. But these kinds of systems are performing mission critical tasks like controlling devices in industrial facilities or substations in the smart grid. Therefore, they are subject to a lot of regulatory standards. Yet, to provide remote access over the internet, special architectures are developed to integrate a network interface into these devices without inferring with the actual functionality. However, these architectures either lack security measures against cyber-attacks or do not offer the necessary performance for time-critical communication interfaces. To solve that, an architecture consisting of three units is introduced in this paper to provide a network interface with extensive security measures and a high performance. The main feature is the isolation of the cryptographic functionality onto an additional MCU. After proposing the basic concept, the paper presents many implementation details. Based on the current state of implementation, a concept validation of the realized architecture is described.
In the beginning of every security analysis or penetration test of a system, information about the target has to be gathered. On IT-Systems a port scan is usually performed as a first step of an investigation. Since the communication protocols differ in automotive systems, generic port scanning tools can’t be used for a security analysis of CANs.
More complex protocols have a higher likelihood of implementation errors and bugs. On CAN networks, such payloads are transferred through International Standard Transport Protocol (ISO-TP) communication. We designed a new methodology to identify ISO-TP endpoints in automotive networks. Every of these endpoints can provide exploitable application layer protocols and therefor has to be considered during penetration testing and security analysis.
We contribute a new scan approach for the automated evaluation of possible attack surfaces in automotive CAN networks which has a higher coverage and multiple advantages than state of the art approaches.
Modern compute architectures often consist of multiple CPU cores to achieve their performance, as physical properties put a limit on the execution speed of a single processor. This trend is also visible in the embedded and real-time domain, where programmers are forced to parallelize their software to keep deadlines. Additionally, embedded systems rely increasingly on modular applications, that can easily be adapted to different system loads and hardware configurations.
To parallelize applications under these dynamic conditions, often dispatching frameworks like Threading Building Blocks (TBB) are used in the desktop and server segment. More recently, Embedded Multicore Building Blocks (EMB2) was developed as a task-based programming solution designed with the constraints of embedded systems in mind.
In this paper, we discuss how task-based programming fits such systems by analyzing scheduler implementation variants, with a focus on classic work-stealing and the libraries TBB and EMB2. Based on the state of the art we introduce a novel resource-trading concept that allows static memory allocation in a work-stealing runtime holding strict space and time bounds. We conduct benchmarks between an early prototype of the concept, TBB and EMB2, showing that resource-trading does not introduce additional runtime overheads, while unfortunately also not improving on execution time variances.
Cybersecurity in health

Purpose
Cybersecurity in healthcare has become an urgent matter in recent years due to various malicious attacks on hospitals and other parts of the healthcare infrastructure. The purpose of this paper is to provide an outline of how core values of the health systems, such as the principles of biomedical ethics, are in a supportive or conflicting relation to cybersecurity.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper claims that it is possible to map the desiderata relevant to cybersecurity onto the four principles of medical ethics, i.e. beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy and justice, and explore value conflicts in that way.
Findings
With respect to the question of how these principles should be balanced, there are reasons to think that the priority of autonomy relative to beneficence and non-maleficence in contemporary medical ethics could be extended to value conflicts in health-related cybersecurity.
Research limitations/implications
However, the tension between autonomy and justice, which relates to the desideratum of usability of information and communication technology systems, cannot be ignored even if one assumes that respect for autonomy should take priority over other moral concerns.
Originality/value
In terms of value conflicts, most discussions in healthcare deal with the conflict of balancing efficiency and privacy given the sensible nature of health information. In this paper, the authors provide a broader and more detailed outline.
Laryngoscopic images of the vocal tract are used for diagnostic purposes. Quantitative mea-surements like changes of the glottis size or the surface of the vocal cords during an image sequence can be helpful to describe the healing process or to compare the findings of diffe-rent patients. Typically the endoscopic images are circulary symmetric distorted (barrel di-stortion). Therefore measurements of geometric dimensions depend on the object´s position in the image. In this paper an algorithm is presented which allows the computation of the translational invariant "real" object size by correcting the image distortion without using additional calibration of the optical environment.
Zur Analyse von Lippenbewegungsabläufen wird ein aktives Konturmodell eingesetzt. Probleme bereitet die hohe Sprechgeschwindigkeit, die in star ken Objektverschiebungen result iert und bislang nicht durch eine alleinige Konturanpassung kompensiert werden kann. In diesem Beitrag werden die klassischen aktiven Konturmodelle um eine Vorjustierung der Grobkonturen erweitert, die eine energiebasierte Konturanpassung erst möglich macht. Die Schätzung der Verschiebung zur Vorjustierung basiert auf dem Gradientenbild und einem prädikatenlogisch formulierten Regelwerk, das Annahmen und Nebenbedingungen als Wissensbasis enthält. Mit Hilfe dieser Erweiterungen ist eine automatisierte Konturverfolgung der Lippen möglich.
Statistische Eigenschaften natürlicher Grauwerttexturen werden mit Co-Occurrence Matrizen, basierend auf der Grauwertstatistik zweiter Ordnung, modelliert. Die Matrix gibt dann die apriori Wahrscheinlichkeiten aller Grauwertpaare an. Da in der medizinischen Bildverarbeitung verstärkt Multispektralbilder ausgewertet werden, wird das bekannte Konzept hier auf beliebige Vektorbilder erweitert. Dadurch kann bei der Texturklassifikation die zur Verfügung stehende Information vollständig genutzt werden. Insbesondere zur Detektion von Farbtexturen ist dieser Ansatz geeignet, da Wertepaare unterschiedlicher Spektralebenen ausgewertet werden können. Ebenso kann die Methode auch bei der Multiskalendekomposition von Intensitätsbildern zur Verbesserung der Texturerkennung beitragen. Die in den Matrizen entstehenden Muster lassen dann über die Extraktion geeigneter Texturdeskriptoren Rückschlüsse auf die Texturen des Bildes zu.
Common Schanz screw systems can be used to stabilize pelvic ring fractures. In order to accommodate for different patient’s requirements, implants can be placed in cranio-caudal direction into the os ilium (T1), or into the supraacetabular bone canal, and thus, in dorso-ventral direction (T2). Whereas both techniques are currently used, no data of the biomechanical behavior is available up to this date. The aim of this study is to analyze, whether T2 shows biomechanical advantages with respect to tissue and implant stresses due to the enlarged bone-implant interface. Forces acting on the pelvis were analyzed using motion capture data of a gait cycle obtained by the utilization of a musculoskeletal simulation program. A three dimensional finite element (FE) model of the pelvis with grayscale-based material properties was generated. The muscle and joint reaction forces at toe-off were applied to the FE model and instable pelvis fractures were implemented. The osteosynthesis systems were positioned within the model in order to enable the comparison between the two different surgical techniques. Stresses and displacements were analyzed for bone tissue, fracture zone and implant.
T2 lead to approx. 30% larger displacements in the fracture zone. Von-Mises stresses were larger for T2 in the implant (80 MPa vs. 227 MPa), whereas T1 leads to larger stresses in the bone tissue (200 MPa vs. 140 MPa).
Both implantation techniques showed a good biomechanical behavior. Differences could be found with respect to tissue strains and deformations in the fracture zone. If bone quality or fracture healing are of concern, T2 or T1 should be used, respectively. However, both techniques seem to be applicable for cases with no special requirements. Further analyses aim to investigate the behavior under cyclic loading.
Die fortschreitende Digitalisierung des Gesundheitswesens ebnet auch den Weg einer stärkeren Verbreitung der telemedizinischen Versorgung in Deutschland. Die Politik erleichtert diesen Weg, z.B. mit dem eHealth-Gesetz oder mit der Lockerung des "Fernbehandlungsverbots" durch den Deutschen Ärztetag. Dabei wird schon aus der Definition (siehe z.B. die unten stehende Definition der AG Telemedizin) klar, dass Telemedizin keine neue medizinische Disziplin begründet. Bei Telemedizin handelt es sich nur um ein technisches Werkzeug in Kombination mit geeigneten klinischen Prozessen, damit bestehende medizinische Expertise unter Einsatz von Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien räumliche Entfernungen oder einen zeitlichen Versatz überbrücken kann. Patientinnen und Patienten können also behandelt werden, auch wenn sie vom Arzt räumlich entfernt sind.
Medical confidentiality is very important because it builds the fundament of trust between doctors and patients. In modern health services data protection is essential. But there are also other important security objectives, such as integrity and authenticity of medical data and health services, as their breach can potentially lead to life threatening conditions. State of the art security mechanisms are necessary to protect medical data and services and prevent attacks known as “hacking”. They should include in particular cryptography, as you can usually rely on mathematics, more than in software security and access control mechanisms. As patients normally cannot assess the security of a service, security audits or certifications of health services should be provided to generate trust and confidence.
