This article describes a systematic literature search of research articles on the topics of ecological sustainability and production planning. Over 900 research articles deal intensively with these topics. These articles were catalogued and included in a database. They can be evaluated with an analysis tool, developed by the research group. The tool is available free of charge via a website of the research group.
This article reviews the state of the art in research regarding sustainable extensions of hierarchical production planning. Sustainability is currently of considerable importance due to various interest groups. Hierarchical operational production planning and control is the state of the art in research as well as in industrial practice for planning of stations and their aggregations to production systems. Thus, it might be highly relevant to improve sustainability. In the literature mainly the scheduling level as well as the ecological dimension are considered. So the current research is limited to selected partial planning problems and incomplete with regard to sustainable aspects that emerge.
In this article, we discuss energy consumption of producing firms on aggregate production planning. While almost constant energy consumption can be the case for a producing firm, highly fluctuating energy demand can occur as well. Together with volatile energy supply, e.g. due to renewable energy sources, this combination of fluctuating energy supply and demand can result in planning uncertainty and high energy costs. We propose different case studies in which such high deviation in the electricity consumption of a producing firm occurs due to aggregate production planning without appropriate consideration of energy consumption.
Simulation der Einplanung der terminkritischen Montage von Abfüllanlagen am Beispiel der Krones AG
(2021)
Many companies need to make the best possible use of their production areas. For others, meeting predetermined customer due dates is critical. Few companies have to meet both requirements simultaneously. One example is the final assembly at Krones AG. An extensive simulation study identified potential for improvement. In some planning problems, preferring orders due to buffer time proves to be advantageous. In others, avoiding unused space is better. This project is to be continued with the development of a simulation-based planning program.
Simulation of robust Master Production Scheduling in an industrially relevant planning environment
(2013)
This paper presents a simulation analysis on the effects of robust master production scheduling. Up to now, relatively highly aggregated planning models for robust master production scheduling were regarded and the realizability of the planning results was not considered. This paper analyses a more detailed model for master production scheduling than in previous works. The evaluation of the planning results is made by providing the planning results to the subsequent planning levels in a hierarchical production planning system and realizing them in a realistic production system. The primary objective of the production system is to minimise tardiness of customer order deliveries. The secondary objective is to minimise inventory of end products. It is shown that robust master production scheduling in such a planning system leads to significant reductions of tardiness of customer order shipment. Compared to an equivalent deterministic approach for master production scheduling, the mean customer order backlog is reduced more than the mean inventory levels are increased.
