This paper firstly explains the basics of pathfollowing in nonlinear statics. It then discusses the four general approaches for solving the occurring sets of linear equations. As a result we introduce an Arnoldi (IOM)—Newton algorithm which has a wide range of application and is highly efficient, as it adapts its effort to the progress of the computation. Two examples are given to prove the good performance of the algorithm.
Grid shells exhibit different modes of stability failure. This paper explains some parameters influencing the failure load of domes and barrel vaults and makes suggestions for the imperfection shape which has to be assumed in an analysis. All computations are carried out with a commercial FE-program.
