Feasibility of detecting thrombotic deposits in membrane oxygenators using micro computed tomography

Clot formation within membrane oxygenators (MOs) remains a critical problem during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The composition of the clots—in particular, the presence of von Willebrand factor (vWF)—may be an indicator for prevalent nonphysiological flow conditions, foreign body reactions, or coagulation abnormalities in critically ill patients. Mats of interwoven gas exchange fibers from randomly collected MOs (PLS, Maquet, Rastatt, Germany) of 21 patients were stained with antibodies (anti‐vWF and anti‐P‐selectin) and counterstained with 4′,6‐diamidino‐2‐phenylindole. The extent of vWF‐loading was correlated with patient and technical data. While 12 MOs showed low vWF‐loadings, 9 MOs showed high vWF‐loading with highest accumulations close to crossing points of adjacent gas fibers. The presence and the extent of vWF‐fibers/“cobwebs,” leukocytes, platelet–leukocyte aggregates (PLAs), and P‐selectin‐positive platelet aggregates were independent of the extent of vWF‐loading. However, the highly loaded MOs were obtained from patients with a significantly elevated SOFA score, severe thrombocytopenia, and persistent liver dysfunction. The coagulation abnormalities of these critically ill patients may cause an accumulation of the highly thrombogenic and elongated high‐molecular‐weight vWF multimers in the plasma which will be trapped in the MOs during the ECMO therapy.

With the increase in demand of services in the automotive industry, automotive enterprises prefer to collaborate with other qualified cross-domain partners to provide complex automotive functions (or services), such as autonomous driving, OTA (Over The Air) vehicle update, V2X (Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication), etc. One key element in cross-domain enterprise collaboration is the mutual agreement between interfaces of software components. In this context, model-to-model mappings of software component models of heterogeneous frameworks for automotive services and to explore the synergies in their interface semantics, have become an essential factor in improving the interoperability among the automotive and other cross-domain enterprises. However, one of the challenges in achieving cross-domain component interface model-to-model mappings at an application level lies in detecting the interface semantics and the semantic relations that are conveyed in different component models in different frameworks. This paper addresses this challenge using a Model Driven Architecture (MDA) based analytical approach to explore interface semantic synergies in the cross-domain component meta-models that are used for automotive services. The approach applies manual semantic checking measurements at an application interface level to understand the meanings and relations between the different meta-model entities of cross-domain framework software components. In this research, we attempt to ensure that interface description models of software components from heterogeneous frameworks can be compared, correlated and re-used for automotive services based on semantic synergies. We have demonstrated our approach using component meta-models from cross-domain enterprises, that are used for the automotive application domain.
Independent component analysis (ICA), as a data driven method, has shown to be a powerful tool for functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data analysis. One drawback of this multivariate approach is, that it is naturally not convenient for analysis of group studies. Therefore various techniques have been proposed in order to overcome this limitation of ICA. In this paper a novel ICA based work-flow for extracting resting state networks from fMRI group studies is proposed. An empirical mode decomposition (EMD) is used to generate reference signals in a data driven manner, which can be incorporated into a constrained version of ICA (cICA), what helps to overcome the inherent ambiguities. The results of the proposed workflow are then compared to those obtained by a widely used group ICA approach. It is demonstrated that intrinsic modes, extracted by EMD, are suitable to serve as references for cICA to obtain typical resting state patterns, which are consistent over subjects. This novel processing pipeline makes it transparent for the user, how comparable activity patterns across subjects emerge, and also the trade-off between similarity across subjects and preserving individual features can be well adjusted and adapted for different requirements in the new work-flow.

Abstract Background Most medical students are in contact with the pharmaceutical or medical device industry during their studies. Medical schools play an important role in protecting students from undue commercial influence and educating them about pharmaceutical marketing practices. Such influence has been shown to affect later prescribing behaviour with potential adverse effects for patient care. While in North America, many medical schools formulated and implemented conflicts of interest (COI) policies, only few such institutional policies have been reported in Germany. We aimed to analyze the quantity and quality of policies and curricula on COI at medical schools across Germany. Methods We collected relevant COI policies and teaching activities by conducting a search of the websites of all 38 German medical schools using standardized keywords for COI policies and teaching. Further, we surveyed all medical schools’ dean’s offices and adapted a scoring system for obtained results with 13 categories based on prior similar studies. Results We identified relevant policies for one medical school via the web-search. The response rate of the deans’ survey was 16 of 38 (42.1%). In total, we identified COI-related policies for 2 of 38 (5.3%) German medical schools, yet no policy was sufficient to address all COI-related categories that were assessed in this study. The maximum score achieved was 12 of 26. 36 (94.7%) schools scored 0. No medical school reported curricular teaching on COI. Conclusion Our results indicate a low level of action by medical schools to protect students from undue commercial influence. No participating dean was aware of any curriculum or instruction on COI at their respective school. The German Medical Students Association and international counterparts have called for a stronger focus on COI in the classroom. We conclude that for German medical schools there is still a long way to go.
SQL-on-Hadoop processing engines have become state-of-the-art in data lake analysis. However, the skills required to tune such systems are rare. This has inspired automated tuning advisors which profile the query workload and produce tuning setups for the low-level MapReduce jobs. Yet with highly dynamic query workloads, repeated re-tuning costs time and money in IaaS environments. In this paper, we focus on reducing the costs for up-front tuning. At the heart of our approach is the observation that a SQL query is compiled into a query plan of MapReduce jobs. While the plans differ from query to query, single jobs tend to be similar between queries. We introduce the notion of the code signature of a MapReduce job and, based on this, our concept of job similarity. We show that we can effectively recycle tuning setups from similar MapReduce jobs already profiled. In doing so, we can leverage any third-party tuning adviser for MapReduce engines. We are able to show that by recycling tuning setups, we can reduce the time spent on profiling by 50% in the TPC-H benchmark.
In this work, an integrated vehicle control system (IC) is tested in run-off-road scenarios. The integrated approach was employed in order to coordinate vehicle control systems, i.e. the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS), Four-wheel Steering (4WS) and the Electronic Stability Program (ESP). To perform a run-off-road maneuver, a fuzzy virtual test driver was designed. By receiving the lateral position of an obstacle and the vehicle’s relative yaw angle, the virtual test driver is capable of following a reference trajectory. Furthermore, to test the performance of the standalone controllers, i.e. ABS, ESP and 4WS, individual maneuvers are performed using a multibody vehicle model. The vehicle without any coordination between the control systems is used as reference. For the simulation results, it is concluded that the IC improves the vehicle stability and maneuverability in comparison with the non-integrated approach.
In this thesis, a concept for the automated use of network planning processes, which is part of the decision support system developed in the framework of the EU project CrossEnergy, is presented. This publication focuses on the automatic processing of input data and subsequent network modeling as well as the coordination of network extension measures for the systematic solution of static voltage and current problems. Different variants are calculated in order to be able to compare the design technologies.
To assess whether a structural element made of a given building material can withstand the expected mechanical load and environmental exposure in service, designers need information on the material resistances and loads as well as the local conditions. The durability of a building material in the structure can only be assessed if these factors are taken into account. Usually, the material resistances are obtained from laboratory tests. However, the performance of materials under standardized laboratory conditions differs from those occurring in the field. This paper considers this assessment problem and develops a solution strategy based on carbonation-induced corrosion as an example.
Masonry structures were built by means of various techniques, using materials whose properties exhibit a considerable scatter depending on the period of construction, region- specific soil resources and manufacturing procedures. Significant spatial variability within the structural system is often observed due to diverse deterioration mechanisms. Therefore, it is important to obtain case-specific information on the mechanical properties of existing masonry structures.
The case study of a historic building illustrates how the number of destructive tests (DTs) used to calibrate non-destructive tests (NDTs) can be optimised for the reliability assessment. Calibrated NDTs are used to establish the probabilistic model for compressive masonry strength. The specific focus is on compressive strength of masonry units; tests of mortar strength are only briefly discussed.
The preliminary assessment is based on non-calibrated NDTs. The number of DTs for calibration is then optimised by means of probabilistic cost optimisation, considering also possible subsequent actions – ‘do nothing’ or ‘strengthen the structure’. It appears that the estimates of masonry unit strength based on NDTs are associated with large dispersion and may be significantly biased. Consequently, it is often beneficial to conduct at least one DT. A practical tool is provided to determine optimum number of DTs for different outcomes of a NDT survey and different failure consequences.
For material testing, qualification and subsequent assessment fast, simple, reliable and economic methods are needed. This paper provides an overview of different techniques to determine the depth of carbonation in cementitious materials. The easiest and cheapest way is to remove a core or a fragment of concrete cover and spray a colour indicator on the fresh fractured surface (by splitting). Here, 1 % phenolphthalein in 70 % ethanol is most widely used. However, this only indicates in which area the concrete has a pH value below 8.2-10, but not the actual carbonation front which is on average about 20 % higher. Since phenolphthalein is carcinogenic, alternative colour indicators were investigated in the laboratory. 0.5 % Curcumin showed similar colour change to phenolphthalein. In addition, 0.1 % thymolphthalein proved to be an alternative. Scattering within one measurement was lower than for phenolphthalein and the results were closer to the carbonation depths determined by different analytical methods (TGA and LA-ICP-MS). Furthermore, the transition pH-value of thymolphthalein is in the area of 9.3-10.5 which is closer to the actual carbonation front, allowing a more accurate assessment of the risk of reinforcement corrosion.
The analysis of German weather data from 1996 to 2019 reveals a development in climate towards freeze-thaw exposure conditions which are detrimental to concrete durability. This trend may intensify freeze-thaw attack in future and lead to more internal and/or external damage in concrete structures. This contribution considers the inclusion of real climate conditions in laboratory simulations. Weather data were recorded and compared with depth-resolved measurements of humidity and temperature in concrete samples stored at the median site of an expressway. The strength of attack depends mainly on the amount of damaging freeze-thaw cycles (minimum temperature <-5°C in combination with moisture). In addition, the salt content of the contact water, minimum temperature and thickness of the ice layer on the concrete surface are decisive. Experiments show that internal and to a minor degree also external damage increase due to lower heating rates. The exposure of the sample itself (i.e. compass direction and removal of snow) affects the resulting damage evolution significantly. In order to save resources and enable the production of more sustainable concrete structures, current accelerated tests need to be adapted to real climatic conditions. 1. Introduction Adaptation to climate change and the associated extreme weather events represents a crucial challenge for our society. The durability of concrete, the most frequently used building material, is highly dependent on the local environment of concrete structures. In the case of a freeze-thaw de-icing salt attack, this is given by essentially the number of frost-thaw cycles (FTC) relevant to damage, the minimum temperature, the thickness of the ice layer, the moisture conditions and the concentration of salt. By investigating the interdependencies, the depth of scaling of the concrete surface per winter period can be predicted as a function of parameters accounting for the different effects of the concrete composition (air content, w/b ratio and binder type), curing time, carbonation and the duration and formation of damaging freeze-thaw cycles, [1, 2]. In order to quantify the individual effects and map them in an engineering model, a large number of laboratory tests are necessary. For this purpose, a known freeze-thaw cycle usually has to be modified. While it is already known that the cooling rate [3] and holding time at minimum temperature [4] affect scaling development, we investigated the effect of different heating rates on scaling on freeze-thaw de-icing salt attack.

Mobile cranes are regularly operated in regions which experience ultra deep operating temperatures of down to -60?C (-76?F). In safety regulated work environments crane operations will be suspended simply because the lowest wire rope working temperature stated in the applicable standards is -40?C/F. Examples of ultra deep temperature wire rope application are shown in Figure 1.1 and 1.3. It should be noted that this paper is written in conjunction with a paper written by the co-author Ulrich Briem titled “Fatigue Behaviour of Rope Wires”, presented and published in unison with this one. In order to analyze the behaviour under ultra deep temperature conditions, tests on wire rope as well as on rope wires were carried out. In the following, static tensile and bending test results with rope and rope wires will be reported, which were carried out in conditions of down to -95?C (-139?F) as well as at room temperature. The conclusion is that the results of these tests can be adopted to crane wire rope as well.
The rope curve line of a tensioned rope can be described by means of the catenary curve. Opposed to that, the curved line of a free bent rope cannot be described by an analytical function. Practical applications of free bending are for example at tail ropes at the bottom of shaft in rope drives with traction sheaves. The question whether the maximum diameter of rope loop is small enough for the diameter of the shaft is highly interesting. In [1] a method was presented to calculate the curved line of free bent ropes numerically by help of energy methods. An analytical description of rope curve line would be very helpful. Beginning with the structure of a rope curve line of tensioned rope (catenary curve) and considering the influence of bending stiffness, the structure of an analytical equation for the curve line of a free bent rope will be developed. The main focus of this paper is to develop and to describe the structure of such an analytical equation. To get a first idea about the values of the constants in that analytical equation a few test results were evaluated. But these equations consider the static rope behavior only. Due to dynamic effects in the rope while running through the loop at the bottom of a shaft, pendulousness of the tail rope occurs.
To investigate the role of heuristics in the domain of software engineering, an eye tracking study was conducted in which experts and novices were compared. The study focused on one of the most challenging parts in this domain: the generation of an object model for a software product based on a requirements specification. During their training, software engineers are taught different techniques to solve this task. One of these techniques is the noun/verb analysis.
However, it is still unclear to what extent novice and expert programmers are making use of it. Ideally, the noun/verb analysis works as a heuristic and helps programmers to make fast and accurate decisions. Participants in the study were 40 software programmers at four levels of expertise (novices, intermediates, experienced rogrammers, experts). They were presented with ten decision tasks. In each task, participants read a requirement specification and then had to choose one out of three presented class diagrams that they considered the best solution. During the task, their eye movements were recorded. Results show that all participants used the noun/verb analysis as a heuristic. Programmers with higher levels of expertise, however, outperformed programmers with lower levels of expertise. Interestingly, the more experienced programmers were not following the noun/verb analysis in a blindfolded way. They realised that the noun/verb analysis would produce diagrams, but a skilled software architect would not model them in this way. Instead they created their models in a way that they perceived as more logical and realistic
In recent years, the science and engineering for controlling sound transmission in buildings have shifted from a focus on individual assemblies such as walls or floors, to a focus on performance of the complete system. Standardized procedures for calculating the overall transmission, combined with standardized measurements to characterize sub-assemblies, provide much better prediction of sound transmission between adjacent indoor spaces. The International Standards Organization (ISO) has published a calculation method, ISO 15712-1 that uses laboratory test data for sub-assemblies such as walls and floors as inputs for a detailed procedure to calculate the expected sound transmission between adjacent rooms in a building. This standard works very well for some types of construction, but to use it in a North American context one must overcome two obstacles – incompatibility with the ASTM standards used by our construction industry, and low accuracy of its predictions for lightweight wood or steel frame construction. To bypass limitations of ISO 15712-1, this Guide explains how to merge ASTM and ISO test data in the ISO calculation procedure, and provides recommendations for applying extended measurement and calculation procedures for specific common types of construction. This Guide was developed in a project established by the National Research Council of Canada to support the transition of construction industry practice to using apparent sound transmission class (ASTC) for sound control objectives in the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC). However, the potential range of application goes beyond the minimum requirements of the NBCC – the Guide also facilitates design to provide enhanced sound insulation, and should be generally applicable to construction in both Canada and the USA. This publication contains a limited set of examples for several types of construction, to provide an introduction and overview of the ASTC calculation procedure. Additional examples and measurement data can be found in the companion documents to this Guide, namely NRC Research Reports RR-333 to RR-337. Furthermore, the calculation procedure outlined and illustrated in this Guide is also used by the software web application soundPATHS, which is available for free on the website of the National Research Council of Canada (see the references in Section 7 of this Guide for access details).

Handbook of Energy Storage
(2019)
There are several approaches to classifying energy storage systems (see Chaps. 1 and 2). Storage systems are used in a large number of different technologies at various stages of development, and in a wide range of application areas (see Chaps. 3 to 5). This chapter compares the capabilities of the different storage systems using the following criteria:This comparison of storage systems also provides a convenient overview of the various storage systems and their capabilities.
Technologies status and perspectives of Power-to-Gas in connection with seasonal underground storage
(2019)
This article revisits an analysis on (in)accuracies of time series averaging under dynamic time warping (dtw) conducted by Niennattrakul and Ratanamahatana [16]. They proposed a correctness-criterion for dtw-averages and postulated that dtw-averages can drift out of the cluster of time series to be averaged. They claimed that dtw-averages are inaccurate if they violate the correctness-criterion or suffer from the drift-out phenomenon. Furthermore, they conjectured that such inaccuracies are caused by the lack of triangle inequality. In this article, we show that a rectified version of the correctness-criterion is unsatisfiable and that the concept of drift-out is geometrically and operationally inconclusive. Satisfying the triangle inequality is insufficient to achieve correctness and unnecessary to overcome the drift-out phenomenon. We place the concept of drift-out on a principled basis and show that Fréchet means never drift out. The adjusted drift-out is a way to test to which extent an approximated dtw-average is coherent. Empirical results show that approximations obtained by the state-of-the-art averaging methods are incoherent in over a third of all cases.
The sample mean is one of the most fundamental concepts in statistics with far-reaching implications for data mining and pattern recognition. Household load profiles are compared to the aggregated levels more intermittent and a specific error measure based on local permutations has been proposed to cope with this when comparing profiles. We formally describe a distance based on this error, the local permutation invariant (LPI) distance, and introduce the sample mean problem in the LPI space. An existing exact solution has exponential complexity and is only tractable for very few profiles. We propose three subgradient-based approximation algorithms and compare them empirically on 100 households of the CER dataset. We find that stochastic subgradient descent can approximate the mean best, while the majorize-minimize mean is a good compromise for applications as no hyperparameter-tuning is needed. We show how the algorithms can be used in forecasting and clustering to achieve more appropriate results than by using the arithmetic mean.
The literature postulates that the dynamic time warping (dtw) distance can cope with temporal variations but stores and processes time series in a form as if the dtw-distance cannot cope with such variations. To address this inconsistency, we first show that the dtw-distance is not warping-invariant—despite its name and contrary to its characterization in some publications. The lack of warping-invariance contributes to the inconsistency mentioned above and to a strange behavior. To eliminate these peculiarities, we convert the dtw-distance to a warping-invariant semi-metric, called time-warp-invariant (twi) distance. Empirical results suggest that the error rates of the twi and dtw nearest-neighbor classifier are practically equivalent in a Bayesian sense. However, the twi-distance requires less storage and computation time than the dtw-distance for a broad range of problems. These results challenge the current practice of applying the dtw-distance in nearest-neighbor classification and suggest the proposed twi-distance as a more efficient and consistent option.
Averaging time series under dynamic time warping is an important tool for improving nearest-neighbor classifiers and formulating centroid-based clustering. The most promising approach poses time series averaging as the problem of minimizing a Fréchet function. Minimizing the Fréchet function is NP-hard and so far solved by several heuristics and inexact strategies. Our contributions are as follows: we first discuss some inaccuracies in the literature on exact mean computation in dynamic time warping spaces. Then we propose an exponential-time dynamic program for computing a global minimum of the Fréchet function. The proposed algorithm is useful for benchmarking and evaluating known heuristics. In addition, we present an exact polynomial-time algorithm for the special case of binary time series. Based on the proposed exponential-time dynamic program, we empirically study properties like uniqueness and length of a mean, which are of interest for devising better heuristics. Experimental evaluations indicate substantial deficits of state-of-the-art heuristics in terms of their output quality.
Purpose:
Because of the sharply growing interest worldwide of “hard” physical-mechanical robot systems for the execution of on-site construction tasks [i.e. single-task construction robots (STCRs)], the purpose of this study is to equip development projects with a systematic design-management system model that allows to integrate the different needs and aims of stakeholders.
Design/methodology/approach:
This paper proposes a STCR-technology management system (STCR-TMS) for the complete development cycle of STCR designs. The STCR-TMS is based on established principles from systems engineering and management and STCR-specific activities developed and tested by the authors as standalone elements in previous research work.
Findings:
The application of the STCR-TMS revealed the practicability of the method and the underlying concepts to provide practical guidance for the development process. Additional findings indicate that the method is sufficiently generic and flexible for application to different types of robots and indifferent world regions. This research has also shown that key activities need to be addressed to increase the practicability of the STCR-TMS.
Originality/value:
A unique characteristic of this method is the evolution with each utilization cycle. In addition, individual elements are interchangeable and can be adapted based on external circumstances. These properties allow the TMS to be applied to other fields in construction robotics. With the progression of the verification and validation of the method, know-how and certain elements can be fed into standardization activities (e.g. establishing a management system standard).
This deliverable describes the results and reflections by the partners’ efforts on user acceptance and motivation strategies. The report presents the outcome of an identification and detailing of user acceptance and motivation strategies for the overall system (REACH, Touchpoints & Engine concept) and subsystems (Touchpoints, REACH toolkit elements), providing full consideration and detailing of ethical, privacy, legal and usability/accessibility aspects. The REACH system incorporates two strands of technological elements; on the one hand, sensing and monitoring elements, and, on the other hand, motivational and physical engagement elements. For both types, user acceptance is critical allowing for a user experience that leads to (intrinsic, extrinsic, etc.) motivation to more physical activity. The remainder of this Deliverable is structured as follows. First, we introduce the REACH-specific interplay of the concept “user acceptance” with the linked concepts “behaviour change/motivation” and “personalization” in the context of (early) physical activation of elderly persons, and outline the related work and activities conducted in REACH (overall and per TP). Second, we present an analysis and structuring of acceptability drivers (ethical, privacy/security, legal, and accessibility considerations) per Touchpoint. From this we developed an integrated view that represents REACH specific know-how about how to use these acceptability drivers to integrate advanced ICT-driven technology for early detection and intervention use cases seamlessly into age inclusive communities. Third, we present our findings in the context of the development of acceptability drivers for the use of sensing and monitoring elements. We conclude the deliverable by outlining acceptability related evidence and examples from REACH trials (based on Deliverable D27 findings), and by summarizing the overall findings of this deliverable.
This deliverable report examines the outcome of the construction of functional or partly functional prototypes or mock-ups of Personalized Interior Intelligent Environment Units (PI²Us) for demonstration and testing purposes, associated with Task T5.4. The first part of this document will give an overview of the relation of this task to other tasks of WP5, other work packages, and the larger framework of the REACH project. The second part sets out the details of the progressive development from early concepts to the current prototyping stage. Moreover, the subsequent lab-based testing is described in the third part of the report. This includes both already carried out and planned testing activities for either early stage validation or final demonstration in a naturalistic test environment. Finally, part four summarizes the results and puts the different prototypes in perspective to the respective touchpoints and the overall REACH engine functionality. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 690425.
