This paper is based on the talk of the same title delivered at the “Dock of Learning” Symposium. I reflect on design research with an eye on the critical issues of our time. Design research has the potential to take on these issues; however, there are challenges. A threatening one, I see, is the divergence of design research and art research. I attempt to tackle this by examining Jonas’ Research through Design and Borgdorff’s Artistic Research with help from John Dewey’s philosophy.
The 0-1 multidimensional knapsack problem (MKP) is a well-known combinatorial optimization problem with several real-life applications, for example, in project selection. Genetic algorithms (GA) are effective heuristics for solving the 0-1 MKP. Multiple individual GAs with specific characteristics have been proposed in literature. However, so far, these approaches have only been partially compared in multiple studies with unequal conditions. Therefore, to identify the “best” genetic algorithm, this article reviews and compares 11 existing GAs. The authors' tests provide detailed information on the GAs themselves as well as their performance. The authors validated fitness values and required computation times in varying problem types and environments. Results demonstrate the superiority of one GA.

We compute the Fourier expansion of Hecke operators on vector-valued modular forms for the Weil representation associated to a lattice L. The Hecke operators considered in this paper include operators T(p^2l) where p is a prime dividing the level of the lattice L. Additionally, an explicit formula for a general type of Gauss sum associated to a lattice L drops out as a by-product.

This paper addresses the problem of properly placing a given task in the manipulator workspace by a heuristic and numeric approach. Thus, the task is placed relatively to the manipulator for each element of the discretized workspace and the required joint torques are determined. The results are are by a torque-based optimization criterion. The modularity of this approach ensures general applicability on various systems and tasks while the high computational effort is treated by GPU parallelization. The method is presented for a given 6DOF manipulator and a highly dynamic trajectory. The resulting interactive map of the manipulator workspace gives an overview of the task dependent dynamic performance, detailed evaluation of certain solutions will show the dexterity of the proposed approach.
