Coagulative disorders, especially clotting during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, are frequent complications. Direct visualization and analysis of deposits in membrane oxygenators using computed tomography (CT) may provide an insight into the underlying mechanisms causing thrombotic events. However, the already established multidetector CT1 (MDCT) method shows major limitations. Here, we demonstrate the feasibility of applying industrial micro-CT (μCT) to circumvent these restrictions. Three clinically used membrane oxygenators were investigated applying both MDCT and μCT.
The scans were analyzed in terms of clot volume and local clot distribution. As validation, the clot volume was also determined from the fluid volume, which could be filled into the respective used oxygenator compared to a new device. In addition, cross-sectional CT images were compared with crosscut oxygenators. Based on the μCT findings, a morphological measure (sphericity) for assessing clot structures in membrane oxygenators is introduced. Furthermore, by comparing MDCT and μCT results, an augmentation of the MDCT method is proposed, which allows for improved clot volume determination in a clinical setting.
This paper proposes the possible switching synchronization strategies of an automotive dual-inverter against the background of minimizing the RMS DC-link capacitor current. The publication mainly focuses on the straight-ahead motion of a rear axle with one electric drive per wheel. In addition to it, a dual-inverter consisting of two subinverters with a common DC-link capacitor is taken into consideration. These sub-inverters each have three phases and are based on a 2-level voltage-source-topology. To control the electrical machines, the continuous Space-Vector-Modulation strategy is used. For this application, different control signal synchronization strategies of the two sub-inverters of the dualinverter are presented. Apart from the existing strategies, this paper proposes a new method, which inherits a compromise between low complexity and high effectiveness. In contrast to previous publications, the resulting capacitor currents are quantified and subsequentlyevaluated. This novel quantification, which is dependent on the dual-inverter’s operating point, provides a base for targeted dimensioning of the capacitor. Moreover, this forms the foundation for further investigations of vehicle’s cornering, as well as for the possible synchronization of stand-alone inverters. In the context of this publication, the presented results are verified by experimentally determined data of a motor-inverter system.
Independent component analysis (ICA), being a data-driven method, has been shown to be a powerful tool for functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data analysis. One drawback of this multivariate approach is that it is not, in general, compatible with the analysis of group data. Various techniques have been proposed to overcome this limitation of ICA. In this paper, a novel ICA-based workflow for extracting resting-state networks from fMRI group studies is proposed. An empirical mode decomposition (EMD) is used, in a data-driven manner, to generate reference signals that can be incorporated into a constrained version of ICA (cICA), thereby eliminating the inherent ambiguities of ICA. The results of the proposed workflow are then compared to those obtained by a widely used group ICA approach for fMRI analysis. In this study, we demonstrate that intrinsic modes, extracted by EMD, are suitable to serve as references for cICA. This approach yields typical resting-state patterns that are consistent over subjects. By introducing these reference signals into the ICA, our processing pipeline yields comparable activity patterns across subjects in a mathematically transparent manner. Our approach provides a user-friendly tool to adjust the trade-off between a high similarity across subjects and preserving individual subject features of the independent components.
Blended cements, where Portland cement clinker is partially replaced by supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), provide the most feasible route for reducing carbon dioxide emissions associated with concrete production. However, lowering the clinker content can lead to an increasing risk of neutralisation of the concrete pore solution and potential reinforcement corrosion due to carbonation. carbonation of concrete with SCMs differs from carbonation of concrete solely based on Portland cement (PC). This is a consequence of the differences in the hydrate phase assemblage and pore solution chemistry, as well as the pore structure and transport properties, when varying the binder composition, age and curing conditions of the concretes. The carbonation mechanism and kinetics also depend on the saturation degree of the concrete and CO2 partial pressure which in turn depends on exposure conditions (e.g. relative humidity, volume, and duration of water in contact with the concrete surface and temperature conditions). This in turn influence the microstructural changes identified upon carbonation. This literature review, prepared by members of RILEM technical committee 281-CCC carbonation of concrete with supplementary cementitious materials, working groups 1 and 2, elucidates the effect of numerous SCM characteristics, exposure environments and curing conditions on the carbonation mechanism, kinetics and structural alterations in cementitious systems containing SCMs.
Introduction
We present a clinical case showing the real-time detection, characterization and delineation of an early Barrett’s cancer using AI.
Patients and methods
A 70-year old patient with a long-segment Barrett’s esophagus (C5M7) was assessed with an AI algorithm.
Results
The AI system detected a 10 mm focal lesion and AI characterization predicted cancer with a probability of >90%. After ESD resection, histopathology showed mucosal adenocarcinoma (T1a (m), R0) confirming AI diagnosis.
Conclusion
We demonstrate the real-time AI detection, characterization and delineation of a small and early mucosal Barrett’s cancer.
Investigation of Shifted PWM Methods for a Dual Three-Phase System to Reduce Capacitor RMS Current
(2020)
Mild hybrid automotive topologies containing a 48V high power (>15 kW) electric drive system demand a high integration of power electronics and electrical machine. A multi-phase motor winding topology helps to keep the per-phase operating currents to a reasonable level. Close integration and multi-phase system have led to a drive system with dual 3-phase systems supplied by a common 48V DC-link, which allows to shift PWM patterns for reduction of DC-link capacitor ripple current and size. This paper derives some basic rules for combinations of common PWM methods for dual 3-phase systems without magnetic cross-coupling. Experimental measurements verify simulated results.
Wind turbines play a crucial role in the revolution towards renewable resources. They need to be economically competitive to be sustainable. This still requires to lower the cost of energy (COE). To this end, nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) is used within this paper. As known from literature, NMPC significantly improves the energy extracting performance as well as the mitigation of tower loads of wind turbines. As it is shown in this paper, the drivetrain fatigue strength drops disproportionally in parallel, which either increases the demands on the turbine design or decreases the lifetime of drivetrain components. Without additional boundary conditions to the underlying optimal control problems (OCPs), the application of energy-maximizing NMPC might so even raise the COE. Only penalizing axial torque oscillations by quadratic terms decreases energy-extracting performance below the level of classical wind turbine controllers. This makes more sophisticated conditions necessary. In this paper, the increase of the drivetrain damage by NMPC is analyzed, and appropriate boundary conditions are derived, to balance the two contradicting objectives of energy maximization and drivetrain load mitigation. An NMPC approach based on indirect methods is used, to obtain a solution of the OCPs very efficiently. It applies the Hamilton equations and Pontryagin's maximum principle. Its accuracy and efficiency to solve OCPs was presented over the last decades.
