The possible reason for this difference is discussed in terms of a crossover from different rate-limiting kinetics. In the training phase, the observed feature vectors, corrupted by background noise and reverberation, together with estimates for the interference as provided by the speech enhancement system are used for training joint densities of the observations and the interference estimates. In the decoding phase, the joint densities are transformed to conditional densities of the observed features given the interference estimates. Thus, front end processing can be exploited for obtaining interference estimates, and the estimation errors can be modeled very effectively in a data-driven way. Connected digit recognition experiments in a simulated reverberant environment show the potential of the proposed approach: HMMs with the proposed conditional densities outperform various configurations of conventional HMMs in the logarithmic melspectral domain. This is a first step towards using conditional densities for creating synergies between front end and back end. Compared to the state of the art of using finite differences or the forward mode of automatic differentiation, our proposed approach leads to a reduction of the relative temporal complexity from linear to constant time in the number of control variables and measurement weights. We demonstrate that the advantageous complexity results are not only of theoretical nature, but lead to significant speedups in practice as well. With our implementation we are very close to the theoretical bound of the cheap gradient principle. We present one academic (spatially discretized heat equation) and two industrial application examples (biochemical process/Diesel-oxidation catalysis process) where we achieve speedups that range between 10 and 100. In addition to our core results, we also describe an efficient adjoint approach for the treatment of differential algebraic equations and present adjoint formulas for constrained least-squares problems. T1 - On the fatigue behavior and associated effect of residual stresses in deep rolled and laser shock peened Ti-6Al-4V at ambient and elevated temperatures T2 - 2003 TMS annual meeting N2 - Mechanical surface treatments, such as deep rolling, shot peening and laser shock peening, can significantly improve the fatigue behavior of highly stressed metallic components. Deep rolling is an especially attractive technique since it is possible to generate deep, near-surface compressive residual stresses and work hardening while retaining a relatively smooth surface finish. Indeed, this technique is best known for increasing the fatigue strength and lifetime of steel components such as crankshafts. Although most work on deep rolling has been on steels, recently it has also been applied with reasonable success to titanium alloys. Accordingly, in this investigation, we examine the effect of deep rolling on the high-cycle fatigue behavior of Ti-6Al-4V, with particular emphasis on the thermal and mechanical stability of the residual stress states and near-surface microstructures. Preliminary results on laser shock peened Ti-6Al-4V are also presented for comparison. In addition, we examine whether these surface treatments are effective in retaining fatigue strength at the higher temperatures of 300 to 450C. Based on the cyclic deformation and stress/life behavior, together with the X-ray and microstructural observations, it is found that deep rolling can be quite effective in retarding the initiation and initial propagation of fatigue cracks in Ti-6Al-4V at such higher temperatures, despite the almost complete relaxation of the residual stresses at the surface. This clearly implies that, in addition to residual stresses, near-surface microstructures, which in Ti-6Al-4V consist of ultrafine near-surface nanostructures, play a critical role in the enhancement of fatigue lifetimes by mechanical surface treatments. The fabrication of components consisting of different material regions is a challenge which cannot be realized by standard coating devices basing on blades or rollers. Thus, advanced coating and deposition techniques are needed which enable the precise and reliable control over very small powder quantities in order to prepare arbitrary powder patterns with high accuracy and repeatability. In this report, the delivery of polymer powder by vibrating nozzles inside laser sintering machines is investigated. Therefore, a steel nozzle attached to a piezo actuator is integrated into a machine, whereas the nozzle itself features internal channels which allow the precise control over the powder temperature using heat transfer oil. The setup is used to study the influence of different system configurations on the powder deposition characteristics as resolution and layer surface roughness. The results show that temperature influences the mass flow depending on the material used and that a precise deposition of powder pattern with microscale resolution is possible with optimized parameters. Finally, the multimaterial powder pattern is fused by a new illumination strategy of laser sintering which is called Simultaneous Intensity-Selective Laser Sintering in order to demonstrate the potential of this new approach. In this paper, polyethylene powder is qualified for the LBM process and specifically analyzed regarding the optical material properties of the powder for a wavelength of 10.6 μm. By admixing graphite as absorption intensifier the change of the optical material properties and the thereby connected processing parameters are analyzed. The exponential decay of the film temperature is explained by phonon reflection at the interface, which results in a strongly reduced thermal conduction in the cross plane of the layered system. The thermal boundary conductance is found to be as low as 1273 W/(K cm2). Model calculations, including phonon confinement effects, explain the linear relationship between the observed film-temperature decay constant and the film thickness. Even for 2.5 nm thin films the phonon transmission probability across the interface is given by bulk properties. Our simulations show that phonon confinement effects are negligible for bismuth-film thicknesses larger than 1 nm. The interface roughness, defect structure, and strain state have been investigated in dependence of film thickness and growth temperature. For all growth parameters, atomically smooth interfaces are observed. For thin Ge layers, about 75% of the strain induced by the lattice mismatch is relaxed by misfit dislocations at the Ge/Si interface. Only a slight increase of the degree of relaxation is found for thicker films. At growth temperatures below about 600 °C, the formation of twins is observed, which can be avoided at higher temperatures.
