Here, we compare two promising designs to build solid-state electronic devices utilizing the same functional unit. Optically addressable Ru-terpyridine complexes were incorporated in supramolecular wires or employed as ligands of gold nanoparticles and contacted by nanoelectrodes. The resulting small-area nanodevices were thoroughly electrically characterized as a function of temperature and light exposure. Differences in the resulting device conductance could be attributed to the device design and the respective transport mechanism, that is, thermally activated hopping conduction in the case of Ru-terpyridine wire devices or sequential tunneling in nanoparticle-based devices. Furthermore, the conductance switching of nanoparticle-based devices upon 530 nm irradiation was attributed to plasmon-induced metal-to-ligand charge transfer in the Ru-terpyridine complexes used as switching ligands. Finally, our results reveal a superior device performance of nanoparticle-based devices compared to molecular wire devices based on Ru-terpyridine complexes as functional units. Ein verbreiteter Ansatz für die Bestimmung von Prozesszeiten für manuelle Tätigkeiten beim Kommissionieren ist die Methods-Time-Measurement (MTM). Um eine Vorgabezeit mittels MTM zu bestimmen, müssen Einflussfaktoren spezifiziert werden. Dieser Beitrag zeigt anhand der Greifzeit auf, wie diese Einfluss-faktoren auf Grundlage von Artikelstammdaten bestimmt werden können. Weiterhin wird der Unterschied zwischen einer für jeden Artikel individuell bestimmten Greifzeit und der Greifzeit basierend auf repräsentativen Eigenschaften von Artikelgruppen verglichen. Usually, deliveries take place at predetermined, constant time intervals. As in real-world MR systems, the number of containers to deliver in each interval varies in the short term, peaks in the number of deliveries may lead to capacity bottlenecks and late deliveries. In this paper, we develop three alternative strategies to determine starting times of MR cycles in real-time based on the current number of delivery orders in the system aiming to better handle variations in the number of orders. We evaluate the three strategies for different system load scenarios with respect to delivery service levels, order lead times, systems utilization and necessary number of MR trains using a discrete-event simulation model. Was sind die grundlegenden Kräfte die auf Clavicula und Implantat wirken und welchen Einfl uss hat die Bruchform. Methodik Die Muskel- und Gelenkkräfte sowie die Belastung des Implantatverbundes wurden mit einer muskuloskelletalen Simulationssoftware (AnyBody Technology, V.4) berechnet. Hierfür wurden mit einem komplexen Model des menschlichen Körpers folgende Bewegungen analysiert: eine Flexion von 160° und Abduktion 160° mit einem Gewicht von 2 kg in der Hand. Aus CT-Patientendaten wurden zwei dreidimensionale Modelle des Clavicula-Implantat Verbundes gebildet, die sich in der Frakturform unterscheiden (Querfraktur und vertikale Fraktur). In beiden Modellen wurde eine Claviculaosteosynthese in superiorer Position mit einer 6 Loch LCP mit 2 Schrauben pro Hauptfragment verwendet. Die Materialeigenschaften wurden aus der Dichte des Materials sowie aus Literaturdaten verwendet. Die Muskel- und Gelenkkräfte aus der muskuloskelletalen Berechnung wurden auf das Finite Elemente Modell übertragen und die Spannungen und Dehnungen des Implantat-Knochenverbundes wurden berechnet. Ergebnisse Es zeigte sich, dass die simulierte in vivo Belastung stark abhängig vom Flexionswinkel ist. Das Implantat ist in der superioren Lage auf Biegung belastet, welche maximale Werte im Überschulterniveau erreicht. Die Bruchform mit anatomischer Reposition und Kontakt der Hauptfragmente zueinander führt zu einer deutlichen Entlastung des Osteosyntheseverbundes im Vergleich zu einer Bruchform mit vertikaler Fraktur. Schlussfolgerung Aus den Analysen ist eine Positionierung der Plattenosteosynthese für die im mittleren Drittel frakturierte Clavicula in anterior-superiorer Lage wünschenswert. Die anatomische Reposition entlastet den Osteosyntheseverbund und sollte möglichst erreicht werden. Die Nachbehandlung sollte ein Bewegungsausmaß für den Arm für 4 Wochen für einfache Bruchformen auf 70° Flexion und Abduktion limitieren und für komplexe Bruchformen diese Limitierung ausgedehnt werden. The surfaces are excited by an intense fs-laser pulse (pump) and probed by an ultra-short electron pulse with variable time delay. The order-disorder phase transition from a c(4 × 2) to a(2 × 1) of the bare Si(001) surface shows a transient decrease of the intensity of the c(4 × 2) spots which recovers on a time scale of a few hundred picoseconds indicating the excitation of the phase transition. On Si(111) a monolayer of Indium induces a (4 × 1) reconstruction which undergoes a Peierls like phase transition to a (8 × "2") reconstruction below 100 K. Upon laser excitation with a fluence of 3.4 mJ/cm 2 at a temperature of 72 K the phase transition was strongly driven. The (8 × "2")-diffraction spots instantaneously disappears, while the intensity of the (4 × 1)-spots increases. A linear dependence between laser fluence and initial temperature rise was measured for film-thicknesses between 2.5 nm and 34.5 nm. The ratio of initial temperature rise and laser fluence for different film-thicknesses is compared to a model taking multilayer optics into account. The data agree well with this model. Current table-top-terawatt femtosecond laser systems provide an attractive source of few-hundred femtosecond duration bursts of angstrom-scale X-ray radiation with fluxes comparable to standard rotating anode sources. Their compact size enables time resolved structural dynamics to be studied in the small laboratory with temporal resolution better than typical molecular vibrational periods. Ultrafast structural dynamics in crystalline samples are readily studied with such systems and experiments to be discussed in this talk include ultrafast non-thermal solid-to-liquid transition in thin single-crystal Ge-111 films grown on Si-111 substrates; ultrafast non-thermal solid-to-solid transitions in bulk vanadium dioxide from a low temperature insulating phase to a high temperature metallic phase; and harmonic and anharmonic coherent acoustic dynamics in layered Ge-111/Si-111 and bulk GaAs-111 samples. On the surfaces inclined towards five different types of facets form with increasing Au coverage at adsorption temperatures Tads below 800 °C. They are (4 4 3), (7 7 5), (5 5 3), a stepped (2 2 1), and the (3 3 1) facets. Atomic models for the (5 5 3) and (7 7 5) facet planes are proposed on the basis of high resolution STM images. At C we found the formation of an ordered step train which covers the entire surface. With further increasing Au coverage the stepped surface decomposes again into (1 1 1) terraces and step bunches. Driving force is the formation of the Si(1 1 1)-(5×2)–Au reconstruction. We will present our recent work on developing Temporal LEED Spectroscopy (TLS) as a dynamic probe of surfaces capable of kinetics measurements at both high temperatures and surface coverages. By tuning the diffraction to specific structural entities such as steps, islands, etc., and monitoring the diffracted signal as a function of time, dynamics information about these structures can be obtained. As an example we will present TLS results for the dynamics of step fluctuations on Si(001) [1]. We have measured activation energies and identified step-edge diffusion as the rate limiting process for 950K < T < 1130K. Although this result is in apparent disagreement with earlier work, a careful analysis, considering crossover temperatures between different microscopic processes, can reconcile the differences. 1. Islanding of Ge is prevented and a 2D layer growth of smooth and continuous Ge films is observed. The lattice mismatch is accommodated by a periodic array of dislocations confined to the Si/Ge interface. The large covalent radius of Bi reduces the binding energy, allowing Very efficient segregation and low doping levels even at low growth temperatures. Unfortunately, this results also in a high Bi desorption flux limiting the possible growth temperatures below 600 degrees C. Consequently the Ge films show a high defect density in the order of 10(8) cm(-2) for stacking faults and 10(9) cm(-2) for dislocations which limit electron Hall mobility to values below 700 cm(2)/V s at room temperature. It is shown that when using a permanent magnet synchronous machine, a sudden breakdown of the field weakening current causes induction of high voltages in the stator windings. Hence, the electric system of the vehicle has to be protected against the resulting high currents. Furthermore precautions have to be taken to avoid dangerous driving conditions because of high braking torques in an inverter fault operation mode. In the case of the asynchronous induction machine an inverter pulse inhibition poses no big problem, neither for the electric system of the vehicle, nor the driver. In the first method, a Ga ' -focused ion beam in situ to the growth chamber is used to create local regions of enhanced Ga ' concentration and surface topography. It is shown that at low ion doses (Â/10 14 cm (2), implanted Ga causes local nucleation of Ge clusters upon the implanted region. At higher doses (]/10 15 cm (2), a complex surface topography localizes nucleation of Ge clusters. This approach can be used to seed complex patterns of Ge clusters with diameters of tens of nanometers and positional accuracy of sub-100 nm. The second method employs self-assembly of complex strain-stabilized ''quantum quadruplet'' and ''quantum fortress'' structures, whereby cooperative island nucleation around shallow strain-relieving pits is identified during Ge x Si 1(x /Si(1 0 0) heteroepitaxy. These configurations are kinetically limited structures that exist over a range of compositions, growth temperatures, and growth rates, but which are destabilized by strain relaxation (e.g. by the introduction of misfit dislocations) and by growth conditions which provide high adatom surface mobilities. This leads to a material with magnetically controllable mechanical properties of which the magnetorheological effect is the best known. The addition of electroconductive particles to the polymer mix adds electrical properties to the material behaviour. The resulting electrical resistance of the sample can be manipulated by external magnetic fields and mechanical loads. This results in a distinct interplay of mechanical, electrical and magnetic effects with a highly complex time behaviour. In this paper a mechanical characterisation on multiple time scales was conducted to get an insight on the short and long-term electrical and mechanical behaviour of this novel material. The results show a complex resistivity behaviour on several timescales, sensitive to magnetic fields and strain velocity. The observed material exhibits fatigue and relaxation behaviour, whereas the magnetorheological effect appears not to interfere with the piezoresistive properties. Such magneto-optical films have to be specifically engineered, and we give an example of this technology. To assess the validity and accuracy of finite-element calculations of a magnetization assembly combined with the physical modeling of the image formation, comparisons between calculated and experimentally obtained magneto-optical images of metal-loss defects have been made. A convincing quantitative agreement is demonstrated. It is shown that both physical and computer modeling techniques allow for a predictive engineering design of the prospective applications and provide greater insight into the method. Thus, stable and reliable system operation is crucial to avoid delays and material shortages. In industrial practice, milk-run trains usually share resources, for example, loading areas and technology and use the same tracks, leading to dependencies between routes and possible traffic jams and blockages, which significantly affect cycle times and may lead to instabilities in the system. We present a simulation model to analyse in-plant milk-run systems with a focus on typical traffic situations. We describe its application to a large industrial case study in detail and derive recommendations for designing routes with low risk of delays. Using specific orientations, the induced anisotropy can generate an easy plane of magnetization which is inclined with respect to the film plane. If the magnetization lies in this plane a very high sensitivity can be achieved. The dependence of the geometrical orientation of the easy plane on the growth direction is calculated and the sensitivity and dynamic range are derived. Methods: Human umbilical veins (HUV) were frozen in Euro-Collins/1M DMSO at –1°C/min and stored in liquid nitrogen. Stress-strain relationships of fresh and thawed veins were determined in an uniaxial tension-testing rig. HUV endothelial cells (HUVEC) were seeded onto denuded HUV under static conditions and grown for 3d. Luminal surfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. Calcein-stained cells were seeded hyperconfluently to determine the cell retention capacity of fresh and cryopreserved veins. Results: The stress-strain relationships of HUV followed a biphasic pattern typical for natural vessels. Neither the failure stress (2.71±0.36 vs. 3.25±0.97 N, n=3) nor the displacement required to achieve failure (9.73±0.9 vs. 7.43±2.07mm, n=3) were altered by cryopreservation. The burst pressure was estimated as approx. 1000mm Hg within the limitations of the uniaxial model. HUVEC seeded onto denuded HUV formed patches (at 9E3 cells per cm2) or an almost confluent endothelium (at 3E4 cells per cm2) within three days. The capacity to retain seeded HUVEC of denuded HUV was not altered by cryopreservation (1.15±0.08E5 vs. 1.26±0.14E5 cells per cm2, n=6). Conclusions: The burst pressure of HUV seems to be sufficiently high for the human arterial circulation and is not altered by cryopreservation. HUVEC can establish a confluent endothelium on denuded HUV. Therefore HUV appears to be a suitable storable scaffold for vascular tissue engineering. Es ist eine große gesundheits- und sozialpolitische Herausforderung, diese alten Frauen und Männer mit gesundheitlichen Beeinträchtigungen in ihrem Bestreben nach einer weitestgehend autonomen Lebensgestaltung zu unterstützen und zu stärken. Vor diesem Hintergrund widmete sich der Forschungsverbund „Autonomie trotz Multimorbidität im Alter“ (AMA I) der Leitfrage, inwieweit eine selbstbestimmte Lebensgestaltung alter mehrfach erkrankter Menschen erhalten werden kann. Um der Vielfalt der Lebenswelten älterer Menschen gerecht zu werden, wurden im Alltag wenig eingeschränkte und pflegebedürftige sowie kognitiv beeinträchtigte Personen in die Untersuchung einbezogen. Darunter waren Frauen und Männer, die noch im eigenen Haushalt und solche die im Pflegeheim lebten. Im Fokus der Untersuchungen standen die Ressourcen, die den alten Menschen in ihrer jeweiligen Lebenssituation zur Verfügung standen und die Frage, wie diese gestärkt werden können. Der Beitrag präsentiert Ergebnisse zu dieser Forschungsfrage aus der 1. Förderphase des AMA-Verbundes. Darauf aufbauend werden in einer 2. Förderphase (2011–2013, AMA II) nunmehr nachhaltige praxisrelevante Interventionen zur Mobilisierung von autonomierelevanten Ressourcen mehrfach erkrankter alter Menschen entwickelt und auf ihre Praxistauglichkeit getestet. Even if these failure types are known, data for trabecular bone exposed to cyclic loading are still insufficient as the majority of fatigue analyses on bone concentrate on cortical structures. Despite its highly anisotropic and inhomogeneous structure, trabecular bone is treated with continuum approaches in fatigue analyses. The underlying deformation and damage mechanism within trabecular specimens are not yet sufficiently investigated. In the present study different types of trabecular bone were loaded in monotonic and cyclic compression. In addition to the measurement of integral specimen deformations, optical deformation analysis was employed in order to obtain strain distributions at different scale levels, from the specimens' surface to the trabeculae level. These measurements allowed for the possibility of linking the macroscopic and microscopic mechanical behaviour of cancellous bone. Deformations were found to be highly inhomogeneous across the specimen. Furthermore strains were found to already localise at very low load levels and after few load cycles. Microcracks in individual trabeculae were induced in the very early stage of cyclic testing. The results provide evidence of the capability of the method to supply essential data on the failure behaviour of individual trabeculae in future studies. T2 - Medicine Meets Engineering N2 - The fatigue behaviour of materials is of particular interest for the failure prediction of materials and structures exposed to cyclic loading. For trabecular bone structures only a few sets of lifetime data have been reported in the literature and structural measures are commonly not considered. The influence of load contributions not aligned with the main physiological axis remains unclear. Furthermore age effects on the fatigue behaviour are not well described. In the present study, different groups of human vertebral cancellous bone were exposed to cyclic compression. The inital modulus and therefore lifetimes were found to be highly dependent on age. The decrease in both with increasing age was much more pronounced in specimens which were not aligned with the main physiological axis. This implies that old bone is much more sensitive to (cyclic) failure loads in general but particularly to loads which are not coincident with the physiological main axis. We propose a new approach to constructing the finite difference schemes of the BPM at the boundary of the computational window. The new approach can be further improved by correcting the field values at the boundary points according to Hadley's method. The algorithm is easy to implement for both two- and three-dimensional structures. Different coupling regimes are specified, and the changes in switching characteristics during the transformation from one regime to another is studied. However, lowering the clinker content can lead to an increasing risk of neutralisation of the concrete pore solution and potential reinforcement corrosion due to carbonation. carbonation of concrete with SCMs differs from carbonation of concrete solely based on Portland cement (PC). This is a consequence of the differences in the hydrate phase assemblage and pore solution chemistry, as well as the pore structure and transport properties, when varying the binder composition, age and curing conditions of the concretes. However, their indirect measurement of precipitation high above ground leads to strong systematic errors compared to direct rain gauge measurements. Additionally, the temporal undersampling from 5-min instantaneous radar measurements requires advection correction. We present ResRadNet, a 3-D-convolutional residual neural network approach, to reduce these errors and, at the same time, increase the temporal resolution of the radar rainfall fields by a 5-min short-range prediction of 1-min time-steps. The network is trained to process spatiotemporal sequences of radar rainfall estimates from a composite product derived from 17 C-band weather radars in Germany. In contrast to previous approaches, we present a method that emphasizes the generation of spatiotemporally consistent and advection-corrected country-wide rainfall maps. Our approach significantly increased the Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) of the radar product (from 0.63 to 0.74) and decreased the root mean squared error (mse) by 22% when compared to 247 rain gauges at a 5-min resolution. An additional large-scale comparison to eight years of data from 1138 independent manual daily gauges confirmed that the improvement is robust and transferable to new locations. Overall, our study shows the benefits of using 3-D convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for weather radar rainfall estimation to provide 1-min, ground-adjusted, that is, bias-corrected with respect to on-ground sensors, and advection-corrected radar rainfall estimates. We have looked at the evolution of seven-layer Pb islands from five-layer Pb islands due to the transport of Pb atoms from the interisland region, overcoming a barrier at the island edges, and moving to the island tops. By analyzing low-energy electron-diffraction and scanning-tunneling microscopy data, we have estimated the barrier for layer formation in this system to be ∼0.32eV. This energy is much larger than that expected from QSE electronic contributions alone. Students had to solve typical programming problems in the context of app development for the Android platform using the Eclipse IDE. Data was analyzed using IDE as well as browser interaction logs. In addition, screen recordings of the students' interaction with the IDE provide further insight. In this paper we present the first results of our ongoing work. First, it points out that the key to successful reverberant speech recognition is to account for long-term dependencies between reverberant observations obtained from consecutive time frames. Then, a diversity of approaches that exploit the long-term dependencies in various ways is described, ranging from signal and feature dereverberation to acoustic model compensation tailored to reverberation. A framework for classifying those approaches is presented to highlight similarities and differences between them. While we measure activation energies consistent with other work, the observed microscopic mechanism driving the fluctuations is inconsistent with previous claims. We exclude evaporation/condensation of atoms from the steps as the rate limiting kinetics in the temperature range of this experiment. Possible reasons for these differences are discussed. The material has a built-in capillary structure, which results in an immediate fluid uptake. Antibiotics absorbed to the bone substitute resulted in a prolonged release rate. Mechanical strength was investigated by an unconfined compression test up to failure under both wet and dry conditions for both formulations of the bone substitute. Antibiotic release was analysed microbiologically for two antibiotics, vancomycin and gentamicin, over an elution period of 10 days using the agar diffusion method.The drug release analysis resulted in a prolonged release rate of both antibiotics over 10 days. In vitro the amount of gentamicin and vancomycin eluted at day 10. From one pellet still exceeded the minimal inhibitory concentration of most aetiologically important pathogens. Formulation two of the present bone substitute is significantly harder in both wet and dry conditions when compared to formulation one. Both formulations lose strength in the wet condition relative to their performance in the dry condition. However, formulation two is as hard under wet conditions as formulation one is when dry.PerOssal is a suitable new degradable osteoconductive bone substitute that can be loaded with antibiotic solutions, which are released in effective doses over 10 days. The mechanical strength of PerOssal is sufficient to support cancellous bone defects in non-weight-bearing areas or in combination with osteosynthesis. Standardized procedures for calculating the overall transmission, combined with standardized measurements to characterize sub-assemblies, provide much better prediction of sound transmission between adjacent indoor spaces. The International Standards Organization (ISO) has published a calculation method, ISO 15712-1 that uses laboratory test data for sub-assemblies such as walls and floors as inputs for a detailed procedure to calculate the expected sound transmission between adjacent rooms in a building. This standard works very well for some types of construction, but to use it in a North American context one must overcome two obstacles – incompatibility with the ASTM standards used by our construction industry, and low accuracy of its predictions for lightweight wood or steel frame construction. To bypass limitations of ISO 15712-1, this Guide explains how to merge ASTM and ISO test data in the ISO calculation procedure, and provides recommendations for applying extended measurement and calculation procedures for specific common types of construction. This Guide was developed in a project established by the National Research Council of Canada to support the transition of construction industry practice to using apparent sound transmission class (ASTC) for sound control objectives in the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC). However, the potential range of application goes beyond the minimum requirements of the NBCC – the Guide also facilitates design to provide enhanced sound insulation, and should be generally applicable to construction in both Canada and the USA. This publication contains a limited set of examples for several types of construction, to provide an introduction and overview of the ASTC calculation procedure. Additional examples and measurement data can be found in the companion documents to this Guide, namely NRC Research Reports RR-333 to RR-337. Furthermore, the calculation procedure outlined and illustrated in this Guide is also used by the software web application soundPATHS, which is available for free on the website of the National Research Council of Canada (see the references in Section 7 of this Guide for access details). Au cours des dernières années, les scientifiques et les ingénieurs ont fait porter leurs efforts en matière d’atténuation de la transmission du son dans les bâtiments davantage sur le rendement du système dans sa totalité que sur les ensembles de construction individuels. Les méthodes normalisées de calcul de la transmission globale, combinées à des mesures normalisées de caractérisation des sous-ensembles, permettent de mieux prédire la transmission du son entre des espaces intérieurs adjacents. L’Organisation internationale de normalisation (ISO) a publié une méthode de calcul, la norme ISO 15712-1, qui utilise des données d’essai en laboratoire pour les sous-ensembles, comme les murs et les planchers, comme données d’entrée en vue d’une méthode détaillée de calcul de la transmission du son prévue entre des pièces adjacentes dans un bâtiment. Cette norme fonctionne très bien pour certains types de construction, mais pour l’utiliser dans un contexte nord-américain, il faut surmonter deux obstacles – l’incompatibilité avec les normes ASTM utilisées par notre industrie de la construction et la faible exactitude de ses prévisions pour la construction à ossature de bois ou d’acier légère. In Bi the extreme softening of the coherently excited A 1 g optical phonon presents strong indication that upon intense laser‐excitation the Peierls‐transition which determines the equilibrium structure of Bi can be reversed.
