TY - CHAP A1 - Chow, Rosan T1 - Design Research: Making of a Connected Discipline Part 1 T2 - 15th International Conference of the European Academy of Design (EAD Conference), Online and in Person in Brazil, Finland, India, Spain and the UK, 16-20 October 2023 N2 - Despite the existence of societies, journals, conferences, and doctoral programs that generate increasing numbers of doctorates and research publications design research is not a coherent intellectual field with a clear boundary of its subject matter, nor an academic discipline founded on a consensual understanding of its purpose, methodology and pedagogical curriculum; subsequently, there is hardly any commonality across doctoral programs and the assessment of a doctoral degree is difficult if not impossible, so criticised the late design historian Victor Margolin. He called to unify and bound design research to solve these problems. While agreeing with his critiques and appreciating his good intentions, I will argue that his call is impractical as well as undesirable due to the social circumstances and the nature of design inquiry and the changing academic research practice which tend towards inter/transdisciplinarity. Efforts should rather be directed to join fragmented design research in an evolving and inclusive manner to establish a dynamically connected discipline. In place of unified and bounded, I suggest connected to be a more viable concept to think about disciplinary research in design. Here in Part 2, I make some suggestions to start making of a connected discipline. It was set up with multiple stations of which an improvisation theatre was the highlight. Most of public presentations of robots emphasize the power of technology; the exhibition was intentionally designed to set apart from this. We chose theatric play as the medium of engagement and communication, and it was shown to be fruitful. In this paper, we draw implications from our experiences and present some preliminary results on the public opinions of living with robots. An Integrative Design Research Medium "MAPS" and some Reflections T2 - Undisciplined! Design Research Society Conference 2008, Sheffield Hallam, University, Sheffield, UK, 16-19 July 2008 N2 - Design research is an academic issue and increasingly an essential success factor for industrial, organizational and social innovation. The fierce rejection of 1st generation design methods in the early 1970s resulted in the postmodernist attitude of "no methods", and subsequently, after more than a decade, in the strong adoption of scientific methods, or "the" scientific method, for design research. The current situation regarding methodology is characterized by unproductive dualisms such as scientific methods vs. designerly methods, normative methods vs. descriptive methods, research vs. design. The potential of the early (1st generation) methods is neglected and the practical usefulness of design research is impeded. The suggestion for 2nd generation methods as discussed by Rittel and others has hardly been taken up in design. The development of a methodological tool / medium for research through design – MAPS1 – (which is the central part of the paper) presents the cause and catalyst for some reflections about the usability / desirability / usefulness of methodical support for the design (research) process. Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Scotland, April 1-3, 2009 N2 - We take abduction to be the central 'logical' and social "mechanism" of knowledge generation in general, applicable to everyday life, design, and the sciences. In our designerly methodological terms, we speak of ANALYSIS (the inductive phase), PROJECTION (the abductive phase) and SYNTHESIS (the deductive phase). We suppose that projection is enabled by abduction, and that understanding the abductive mechanisms in design PROJECTION is essential for the development of genuine designerly concepts of research. We hypothesize that transfer and transferability are relevant concepts and that establishing their relation to abduction is necessary. We set up quasi-experiments to examine design transfer. Based on the results of the experiments and following , we relate Peircean semiotics to his logical theory: his classes of signs are also classes of abduction. Firstly, we subscribe to Peirce's semiotic -a sign is in a triadic relation among object, interpretant and sign itself. Then we... I reflect on design research with an eye on the critical issues of our time. Design research has the potential to take on these issues; however, there are challenges. A threatening one, I see, is the divergence of design research and art research. I attempt to tackle this by examining Jonas’ Research through Design and Borgdorff’s Artistic Research with help from John Dewey’s philosophy.
