CY - München ER - TY - JOUR A1 - Ji, Yang A1 - Borrmann, André A1 - Beetz, Jakob A1 - Obergrießer, Mathias T1 - Exchange of Parametric Bridge Models Using a Neutral Data Format JF - Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering N2 - Parametric modeling is a well-established methodology in the field of mechanical engineering. It allows for the creation of flexible geometric models using parameters for dimensions and makes it possible to define numeric relationships between these parameters by means of mathematical formulas and define geometric-topological constraints between geometric entities. The result is a flexible geometric model that can be steered through the manipulation of its primary parameters. In contrast to explicit geometric models with fixed dimensions, a parametric model can capture the design intent and represent domain knowledge. The use of parametric modeling techniques is particularly beneficial for designing bridges. This is because the geometric design of bridges is mainly determined by external constraints resulting from the size and the layout of both the overlying and the undercrossing carriageway. This reduces the effort required for reworking when changes are made, while simultaneously providing a high degree of reusability for the model in other, similar projects, resulting in significantly increased efficiency in the bridge design process. Because of the strong fragmentation of the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry, the data exchange between the different participants in a construction project is of crucial importance. The use of neutral, open data formats has proved to be the most suitable approach to realize this data exchange. However, currently existing neutral data formats do not allow for an exchange of parametric geometry. To overcome these technical limitations, this paper introduces an extension to the IFC-Bridge format, thus providing a means of interchanging parametric bridge models. This article describes in detail the necessary entities introduced to define parameters and capture dimensional and geometric constraints. The suitability of the developed extensions is proved by presenting the successful transfer of parametric bridge models between two parametric design systems as well as from a design system to a structural analysis system. Up to now these three planning stages are executed isolated and without the required data exchange between each other. This separation leads to time-consuming and expensive manual re-input of geometric and semantic data. Currently, roads are designed using the traditional approach which is based on various 2D drawings. The current design process focuses on the roadway itself, additional geotechnical conditions such as the slope angle of the dam or the position of a retaining wall are not considered. To solve these problems, a new parametric and 3D-model based approach has been developed in the research project ForBAU — The virtual construction site. This new approach is based on the traditional 2D infrastructure planning process, but includes a new parameterized 3D modeling concept. Different open data formats such as LandXML and GroundXML allow data integration with both, a parametric Computer Aided Design (CAD) system and a geotechnical engineering software. An automatic update function ensures data flow without loss of information. Usage of this new approach will accelerate the infrastructure design and provide a parametric 3D-model approach to close the gap between the geotechnical and the infrastructure planning process. This paper provides detailed information about this new integration concept and gives an overview on the various implementation steps. Thereby, state-of-the-art software solutions attempt to streamline the design and production processes accordingly. However, most digital workflows lack in terms of adequate sequential data preparation, agglomeration, and interfacing capabilities for consecutive design phases. These issues result in long, tedious correction loops, a wide range of software solutions and extensions to mitigate the issues. In addition, many digital workflows do not consider or integrate construction, production and machine relevant data holistically (respectively geometry and semantics). In this context, the production relevant data in from of human-centered work process data referring to digital human models (DHM), derived human abilities, safety and ergonomic criteria are often neglected. However, this is essential to interface the construction, human and machine relevant data in a holistic manner. This paper therefore proposes a DtP-workflow which is intended to solve some of the issues by interfacing relevant software solutions incorporating construction, production (including DHM and more) and machine relevant data in a holistic manner using a Building Information Modeling (BIM)-approach (based on the IFC schema). In this regard, the DtP-workflow aims to reverse common top-down digital workflows by considering and integrating the relevant data for consecutive design phases from the beginning. Subsequently, the DtP-workflow should achieve a reduction in planning effort. A major challenge lies in the fact that a bridge's geometry is often described in parametric terms, using geometric constraints and mathematical expressions to describe dependencies between different dimensions. Since the current draft of IFC-Bridge does not provide a parametric geometric description, this paper presents a possible extension and describes in detail the object-oriented data model proposed to capture parametric design including geometric and dimensional constraints. The feasibility of the concept has been verified by actually implementing the exchange of parametric models between two different computer-aided design (CAD) applications. For this reason the paper proposes a way to improve collaboration between the geomechanical infrastructural design and analysis process, by introducing an infrastructural Information Delivery Manual (IDM). To realize IDM, the traditional geomechanical infrastructural use case was defined and the process specific workflow (activities & data exchange) was determined by developing an infrastructural process map. In order to ensure correct data exchange between the involved processes various Exchange Requirements (ER) were specified. But to the effect an infrastructural product model like IFC is still not available, the data exchange as well as the ER specification was made by different formats. Consequently, urban planners have a strong interest in digital twin technology, since it provides them with a laboratory for experimenting with data before making far-reaching decisions. Realizing these decisions involves the work of professionals in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) domain who nowadays collaborate via the methodology of building information modeling (BIM). At the same time, the citizen plays an integral role both in the data acquisition phase, while also being a beneficiary of the improved resource management strategies. Many of these ML models rely heavily on large amounts of suitable, machine-readable, and labeled training data. Therefore, a variety of conceivable use cases for ML in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry are difficult to implement due to a lack of freely and directly usable training data. The process of manually structuring and labeling existing data is time-consuming and needs in some cases skilled personnel to ensure the quality of the labeled data. Due to these factors, approaches for utilizing artificially generated data, referred to as synthetic data, are becoming more prevalent. Since Building Information Models contain a large amount of information, deriving training data from these models presents an obvious route for generation of this data. There are many ML applications whose implementation is inhibited due to a lack of training data, for which model-based synthetic data offer a possible solution approach. The Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) standard provides a powerful exchange format for models independently of their authoring software. Parametric and generative approaches to model creation enable the generation of numerous different building models within a short period of time and with low effort. This paper presents a workflow for automated derivation of synthetic training data from rule-based or parametrically generated models combined with existing IFC datasets as a multimodal data repository. The method is validated by testing automated synthetically labeled image data for a plan detection task, which is carried out with the Object Detection Framework YOLOv8. The suggested workflow has the potential to enhance data accessibility, thereby contributing to the implementation of ML applications in the AEC industry. This is only feasible if the individual underlying digital model meets the requirements imposed by the analysis at hand. In practice, especially models of existing buildings are not easy to come by as the information describing the existing structure is often scattered across multiple different data sources in various formats. Previous research efforts have outlined methodologies which leverage machine learning, computer vision and subsequent semantic enrichment in order to achieve the (re)construction of such building models. However, these methods are generally not integrated with each other, nor do they consider being able to interface with a shared repository of building related data. In this paper we present a methodology which focuses on establishing a common context for all building related data by utilizing the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) schema. In particular we focus on utilizing readily available geometric and semantic data originating from geographic information systems as a basis, subsequently referencing additional data sources in their corresponding context and finally outlining interfaces with downstream enrichment processes in both directions. Through incorporating contextualized (IFC) data into the early stages of the remodeling workflow, we outline an end-to-end process from the initial component-based data-acquisition to the as-built building information model. In establishing a standardized foundation for data exchange and collaboration it enables all stakeholders to work more seamlessly across different stages of the remodeling project. By integrating process design with AI-based algorithms into simulation tools, various construction process layout variants including robot-assisted scenarios can be simulated and evaluated based on user-specific key performance indicators (e.g., ergonomic score, layouting parameters) to identify optimized solutions. A data processing algorithm automates the process, eliminating the need for manual simulation variations and resulting in increased operational productivity. The AI-based system evaluates and optimizes process layouts by adjusting control parameters. A case study on a brick laying process serves as an exemplary use case, highlighting the necessity and impact of adopting process optimization. The findings emphasize the transformative potential of automated process optimization within simulation environments to rethink existing construction practices, enhance worker well-being, and boost operational productivity.
