The extent of mechanical vessel injury correlates with ISR. A new ex vivo porcine stent model was introduced and evaluated comparing different stent designs. Methods: Coronary arteries were prepared from pig hearts from the slaughterhouse and used for ex vivo implantations of coronary stents. One basic stent design in two configurations (dogbone, DB; non-dogbone, NDB) was used. Vascular injury was determined according to a modified injury score (IS). Results: Standardized experimental conditions ensured comparable vessel dimensions and overstretch data. DB stents caused more severe IS compared to NDB stents. The mean IS and the IS at the distal end of all stents were significantly reduced for NDB stents (ISMean, DB, 1.16 ±0.12; NDB, 1.02 ±0.12; p=0.018; ISDist, DB, 1.39 ±0.28; NDB, 1.13 ±0.24; p=0.03). Außen liegende Bauteile in Form dünnwandiger Flächentragwerke in diesen Anwendungen weisen zumeist nicht eine kreisrunde, sondern unstetige Bauteilkrümmung auf und sind aufgrund ihres Einsatzortes durch Schlagbelastungen (Impacts) in verschiedenen Geschwindigkeitsbereichen gefährdet. Besonders im Niedergeschwindigkeitsbereich sind diese Impacts bei diesen meist gekrümmten Strukturen als kritisch zu beurteilen, da sie von außen oftmals nicht sichtbar sind, sich aber stark auf die verbleibende Restfestigkeit, insbesondere die Druck- und Schwingfestigkeit, aufgrund inter- und intralaminarer Schädigungen auswirken. Sie stellen demnach eine kritisch zu betrachtende Belastungsart dar. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden oben benannte unstetig gekrümmte Flächentragwerke auf eine unstetig elliptisch gekrümmte Prüfkörpergeometrie in Anlehnung an den Querschnitt einer Flügelvorderkante abstrahiert. Mittels experimenteller, numerischer und analytischer Untersuchungen wird ein grundlegendes Verständnis des Krümmungseinflusses auf das Schädigungs- und Verformungsverhalten ebendieser Strukturen bei Impact-Belastung und quasi-statischer Druckbelastung erarbeitet. Prüfkörper mit vier verschiedenen Krümmungsstufen werden dahingehend unter Verwendung einer Fallbolzenanlage im Niedergeschwindigkeitsbereich schädigend geprüft und die resultierende projizierende Schadensfläche in Abhängigkeit des Krümmungsgrades ausgewertet. Zur Untersuchung des reinen Krümmungseinflusses werden Prüfkörper in quasistatischen Druckversuchen im elastischen Bereich auf deren Verformungsverhalten hin analysiert. Durch Einführung des geometriebedingten Verformungswiderstandes als vergleichende Kenngröße kann auf Basis lokal variierender Struktursteifigkeiten ein Zusammenhang aus dem Impact-Verhalten und dem elastischen Verformungsverhalten gleicher Krümmungsstufen geschlossen werden. Durch begleitende numerische Untersuchungen wird das Verformungsverhalten sowie die sich dabei einstellenden einzelschichtspezifischen Spannungszustände untersucht. Weiterhin werden bestehende analytische Berechnungsmethoden für stetige Kreisbögen im Berechnungsumfang erweitert und auf die vorliegende Problemstellungübertragen. Insbesondere der Einsatz von endlosen Verstärkungsfasern kann die mechanischen Eigenschaften additiv gefertigter Strukturen signifikant verbessern und die Fertigung hochbelastbarer Faserverbundstrukturen im 3D-Druckverfahren ermöglichen. Daher gilt es aktuell notwendige Anlagen und Prozessketten für den Fertigungsprozess aber auch Vorgehensweisen für die belastungsoptimierte Auslegung der Faserverläufe innerhalb des Bauteils zu entwickeln, um so das Themengebiet „Endlosfaserverstärkter 3D-Druck“ weiter voranzutreiben. Für mehr räumliche Freiheit bei der Positionierung der Druckbahnen können industrieroboterbasierte Systeme eingesetzt werden, um so das Potenzial gerichteter Bauweise von Faserverbundstrukturen auch im additiven Fertigungsprozess vollumfänglich ausschöpfen zu können. Dabei ermöglicht ihr Einsatz auch eine räumliche Ablage der Faserverstärkung, wobei für die Materialablage ein geeigneter 3D-Druckkopf erforderlich ist. Für die Implementierung der Faserverstärkung ist zudem eine dem Lastfall entsprechende Auslegung des Bauteils sowie die Ermittlung einer sinnvollen Faserpositionierung innerhalb des Bauteils erforderlich, wobei unterschiedliche Variablen aus den Bereichen Material, Struktur und Fertigungsprozess berücksichtigt werden müssen. The case study is the prediction of the yield strength of a 3D-printed 316L steel from morphological and crystallographic features. Three different artificial intelligence models including feed-forward (FNN), convolution (CNN), and graph (GNN) neural networks are employed to train the data-driven models and are compared in terms of performance and computational requirements. The dataset required for training is generated by performing crystal plasticity finite element simulations. The FNN model has the smallest input size and takes in some statistical parameters describing the material microstructure, but its accuracy is relatively low. The CNN approach inputs voxel-based realizations of the microstructure and is able to give accurate estimations; however, its training process is time-consuming and computationally expensive. In the GNN approach, the polycrystalline material is represented by a graph whose nodes and lines represent the grains and adjacency between grains. It is observed that GNN yields a better performance compared to the other two approaches and has the capability of handling complex tasks. The use of climate-neutral fuels, produced from renewable energies, such as Oxymethylene Ether (OME) as a diesel substitute, can significantly reduce CO2 and pollutant emissions in these sectors. In addition to CO2 neutrality, OME also offers improved combustion characteristics compared to diesel fuel, eliminating the soot–NOx trade-off and thus enabling new opportunities in engine design and calibration. In this paper, the combustion of pure OME on a close-to-production, single-cylinder non-road diesel engine with a pump–line–nozzle injection system is analyzed. A variation of the center of combustion at constant power output was performed for diesel and OME at different operating points. Two injectors were investigated with OME. A study on ignition delay and a detailed thermodynamic analysis was carried out. In addition, the exhaust emissions CO, NOx, VOC, as well as particulate-matter, -number and -size distributions were measured. With OME, a significantly shorter ignition delay as well as a shortened combustion duration could be observed, despite a longer injection duration. In addition, the maximum injection pressure increases. VOC and CO emissions are reduced. Particulate matter was reduced by more than 99% and particle number (>10 nm) was reduced by multiple orders of magnitude. The median of the particle size distribution shifts from 60 to 85 nm (diesel) into a diameter range of sub 23 nm (OME). A significant reduction of NOx emissions with OME enables new degrees of freedom in engine calibration and an efficiency advantage without hardware adaption. After an elbow trauma the stability of the joint is an important decision criterion for the subsequent treatment. The decision regarding non-operative/operative care depends mostly on subjective assessments of medical experts. Therefore, the aim of this study is to use musculoskeletal simulations as an objective assessment tool to investigate the extent to which failure of different stabilizers affects the elbow stability and how these observations correspond to the assessment from clinical practice. A musculoskeletal elbow simulation model was developed for this aim. To investigate the stability of the elbow, varus/valgus moments were applied under 0°, 45°and 90° flexion while the respective cubital angle was analyzed. This was performed for nine different injury scenarios, which were also evaluated for stability by clinical experts. With the results, it can be determined by which injury pattern and under which flexion angle the elbow stability is impaired regarding varus/valgus moments. The scenario with a complete failure of the medial and lateral ligaments and a fracture of the radial head was identified as having the greatest instability. The study presented a numerical determination of elbow stability against varus/valgus moments regarding clinical injury patterns, as well as a comparison of the numerical outcome with experience gained in clinical practice. The numerical predictions agree well with the assessments of the clinical specialists. Thus, the results from musculoskeletal simulation can make an important contribution to a more objective assessment of the elbow stability. Despite their continued importance, there is no systematic method of defining these control limits. However, sub-optimal control limits can lead to undetected faults or cause unnecessary interruption to production. This manuscript presents an algorithm that systematizes this manual process into an efficient search task. We conceptualized the search task as a sequence of sub-problems that are based on the conventional steps taken by process experts when defining control limits. This algorithm can be integrated into an expert tool for shop floor personnel to automate the definition of control limits in annotated time series data. We demonstrate the efficacy of the control limits found by our algorithm by comparing them to those manually defined by process experts in real-world process data from the automotive industry. Furthermore, we show that our algorithm generalizes to traditional time series classification problems and achieves state-of-the-art performance on selected benchmark datasets. However, there is a paucity in current literature regarding the use of this technique for complete reconstruction of the female breast as an alternative to conventional techniques, such as expander or flap-based procedures. In particular, the influence of pre-operative irradiation for successful reconstruction has rarely been examined in published studies. Here, the authors describe their experience with successful fat injection in pre-radiated breasts in comparison with non-pre-radiated patients. Methods In this retrospective study, we examined a total of 95 lipofilling treatments on 26 patients (28 breasts). All of them experienced mastectomy following breast cancer; local breast defects after partial resection of the gland were not included in this study. In total, 47 lipofilling procedures in 12 non-irradiated patients (14 breasts) and 48 procedures in 14 irradiated women (also 14 breasts) were performed. Per session, approximately 297 +/- 112 cc of adipose tissue was grafted in group A (no radiotherapy) and approximately 259 +/- 93 cc was grafted in group B (radiotherapy). Results Among the group of women without pre-operative radiation, 71% of breast reconstructions limited to lipofilling only showed constant engraftment of fat tissue with a successful reconstructive result, whereas only 21% of the patients with pre-radiated breasts showed complete reconstruction of the breast with a permanent fat in-growth. Conclusion Preoperative radiotherapy significantly impedes successful completion of breast reconstructions planned only by autologous fat transfer. Patients should be selected individually and carefully for complete breast reconstruction using lipofilling only. Nevertheless, knee laxity assessments presented in the literature suffer from significant drawbacks such as soft tissue artifacts, restricting the knee within the measurement, and the absence of quantitative knee ligament property information. In this study, we demonstrated the applicability of a novel methodology for measuring 3D knee laxity, combining robotics- and image-based technology. As such technology has never been applied to healthy living subjects, the aims of this study were to develop novel technology to measure 3D knee laxity in vivo and to provide proof-of-concept 3D knee laxity measurements. To measure tibiofemoral movements, four healthy subjects were placed on a custom-built arthrometer located inside a low dose biplanar X-ray system with an approximately 60 deg knee flexion angle. Anteroposterior and mediolateral translation as well as internal and external rotation loads were subsequently applied to the unconstrained leg, which was placed inside a pneumatic cast boot. Bone contours were segmented in the obtained X-rays, to which subject-specific bone geometries from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans were registered. Afterward, tibiofemoral poses were computed. Measurements of primary and secondary laxity revealed considerable interpersonal differences. The method differs from those available by the ability to accurately track secondary laxity of the unrestricted knee and to apply coupled forces in multiple planes. Our methodology can provide reliable information for academic knee ligament research as well as for clinical diagnostics in the future. In order to improve the outcome, adipose tissue can be processed before application. In this study, we investigated changes caused by mechanical processing. Lipoaspirates were processed using sedimentation, first-time centrifugation, shear-force homogenization, and second-time centrifugation. The average adipocyte size, stromal vascular cell count, and adipocyte depot size were examined histologically at every processing step. In addition, the adipose derived stem cells (ADSCs) were isolated and differentiated osteogenically and adipogenically. While homogenization causes a disruption of adipocyte depots, the shape of the remaining adipocytes is not changed. On average, these adipocytes are smaller than the depot adipocytes, they are surrounded by the ECM, and therefore mechanically more stable. The volume loss of adipocyte depots leads to a significant enrichment of stromal vascular cells such as ADSCs. However, the mechanical processing does not change the potential of the ADSCs to differentiate adipogenically or steogenically. It thus appears that mechanically processed lipoaspirates are promising for the reparation of even mechanically stressed tissue as that found in nasolabial folds. The changes resulting from the processing correspond more to a filtration of mechanically less stable components than to a manipulation of the tissue. In a specified level of soil succession, a special kind of plant family benefits on the Fungal to Bacteria Ratio. The ability to determine this ratio in situ without complex chemical applications is part of the project Electronical Laboratory for Intelligent Soil Examination (ELISE). Several mechanical and optical tests on soil samples are covered within this Project. To analyze the fungal to bacteria ratio, samples are prepared automatically – in a defined and reproductive procedure – to generate slides for shadowing microscopy. The samples are observed by a camera, which is attached to a transmitted light microscope. The automatic analysis, done with computer vision algorithms, aims to quantify bacterial and fungal biomass in the actual sample view. Moreover, the algorithm can classify organisms according to their color and shape. To get a processable picture, several images from different focal levels must be taken through the sample thickness. Parts of each image, are in focus at the actual layer, are merged to a whole depth of field picture, by focus stacking. This produced picture is used to classify, locate and quantify – in first step filamentous organisms e.g. fungal by image sematic segmentation. The result represents an image sized mask, which indicates the class of fungi with class equivalate values at the pixel positions – covered by the organism. This information is used to calculate the fungal mass per gram soil. To quantify the bacterial biomass two approaches are implemented. For low density of bacterial existence, the individual bacteria is counted for a part of the field of view by an image detection algorithm to be extrapolate afterwards to the mass per gram soil. For high density of bacterial occurrence, specified regions of interest with only bacteria present are chosen. An image classification which has been pretrained by pictures of bacterial density patterns – previously determent by making the sample countable due to preforming sample dilutions, is done. The second option for high density bacterial count is, to automatically preform dilutions until the image detection is confidently countable. The inerter is defined to exert a force that is in proportion to the relative acceleration of the two inerter terminals. Here, two TMDI topologies are investigated. The conventional topology is given by the inerter being in parallel to the spring and viscous damper of the TMDI. The other topology is the serial arrangement of spring, inerter and viscous damper being in parallel to the stiffness of the mass spring oscillator of the TMDI. While the first topology intends to increase the inertial force of the TMDI, the second topology aims at producing an additional degree of freedom. The considered TMDI concepts are simulated for harmonic and random excitations, with parameters set according to those described in the literature and with numerically optimized parameters which minimize the primary structure displacement response. The classical TMD is used as a benchmark. The findings are twofold. The conventional TMDI with typical inertance ratio of 1% and the very small value of 0.02% performs significantly worse than the classical TMD with the same mass ratio. In contrast, the TMDI with an additional degree of freedom can improve the mitigation of the primary structure if the inertance ratio is set very small and if the TMDI parameters are numerically optimized. Complete reconstruction of the breast mound with AFG alone represents an exceptional technique that has been published mostly in case reports or in studies with limited cases.The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of three different techniques for breast reconstruction on the recovery of skin sensitivity at the reconstructed breast. METHODS: The study included 30 patients after mastectomy following breast cancer. Three groups were examined: A) breast reconstruction by autologous fat grafting (AFG), B) breast reconstruction by deep inferior epigastric artery perforator flap (DIEP) and C) breast reconstruction by expander/implant (TE).Biometric data were compared; sensitivity tests were performed using Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments.The non-operated, healthy contralateral breasts of the patients were used as a reference. RESULTS: While the traditional reconstruction techniques by microsurgical anastomosed perforator flap or expander/implant showed a strongly decreased or completely missing sensitivity of the skin, the tests after reconstruction by AFG represented high values of sensory recovery, which came close to the reference group of non-operated breasts. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the first study to compare skin sensitivity after AFG-based reconstruction to established techniques for breast reconstruction. We could demonstrate in a limited group of patients, that breast reconstruction by autologous fat grafting can achieve higher values of skin sensitivity compared to traditional techniques. In contrast to diesel applications, monitoring gasoline particulate filters (GPFs) by differential pressure sensors is challenging due to lower soot masses to be deposited in the GPFs. A different approach to determine the soot loading of GPFs is a radio frequency-based sensor (RF sensor). To facilitate sensor development, in previous work, a simulation model was created to determine the RF signal at arbitrary engine operating points. To ensure accuracy, the exact dielectric properties of the soot need to be known. This work has shown how small samples of soot-loaded filter are sufficient to determine the dielectric properties of soot itself using the microwave cavity perturbation method. For this purpose, mixing rules were determined through simulation and measurement, allowing the air and substrate fraction of the sample to be considered. Due to the different geometry of filter substrates compared to crushed soot samples, a different mixing rule had to be derived to calculate the effective filter properties required for the simulation model. The accuracy of the determined mixing rules and the underlying simulation model could be verified by comparative measurements on an engine test bench. With its high energy density close to diesel fuel, R100 is suitable to operate non-road mobile machinery with a high power demand and long operating time, where electric drives reach their limits. Advantages are indicated for its use in environmentally sensitive areas like agriculture since R100 is highly biodegradable and non-toxic. However, R100 is characterised by differing physical and chemical properties compared to diesel. The objective of the research is to investigate the differences in the ignition and combustion behaviour of R100 compared to diesel fuel (DF). For this purpose, a constant volume combustion chamber is used, which is equipped with a modern solenoid injector for engines of non-road mobile machinery. The researched injector shows a different hydraulic behaviour when using R100 compared to DF in that the injected fuel mass is lower with R100 than with DF. In combination with the 14 % by mass lower calorific value, less energy output is determined with R100. When varying the injection pressure, the impact on the ignition delay and combustion behaviour is much higher for R100 than for DF. Specifically, an increase of the injection pressure supports mixture preparation and thus partially compensates the differing physical properties of R100. The results of ignition delay measurements and net heat release analysis are as follows: At low load conditions with low injection pressure as well as a low combustion chamber temperature and pressure, R100 ignites later and shows a further delayed combustion compared to diesel. The opposite is observed for medium and high load conditions, where R100 ignites faster and without delayed combustion in comparison to DF. Thus, an adjustment of the heat release of R100 at the same level as for DF is possible by modifying the injection strategy. The research shows that for an optimised combustion of R100 the injection settings must be adjusted for every operation point separately. The results indicate how the injection parameters should be adjusted for different load conditions to realise a high-quality engine calibration for R100. In addition, a volumetric large temperature jump (V-LTJ) kinetic setup was applied to measure the adsorption and desorption kinetics of a small-scale adsorbent sample prepared dedicatedly to be representative for the adsorbent domain inside the investigated adsorber plate heat exchanger (APHE). All kinetic results of the small-scale adsorbent sample and the APHE were fitted into exponential forms with a single characteristic time constant (τ) with a coefficient of determination (R2) better than 0.9531. A very good matching between the small-scale and full-scale adsorption kinetic measurements was obtained, with an average relative deviation of 12.3% in the obtained τ-values. In addition, the kinetic data of the small-scale adsorbent sample were utilized for estimating the expected specific instantaneous and moving average powers of the evaporator/condenser heat exchanger. The average relative deviation (ARD) between the moving average specific evaporator powers obtained from the small-scale and the full-scale measurements amounts between 5.4 and 15.1%. This study presents a simulative evaluation of the theoretical allocation methods developed in Selmair and Maurer (2020) combined with either hard or dynamic availability rules to ascertain the most efficient parameters of an Autonomous Mobile Robot System. In order to quantify this efficiency, the following Key Performance Indicator (KPI) were considered: number of delayed orders, driven fleet metres and the percentage of available Autonomous Mobile Robot as determined by their state of charge. Additionally, as an alternative energy source, a fast-charging battery developed by Battery Streak Inc. was included in this study. The results show that, in comparison to a conventional and commonly used trivial strategy, our developed strategies provide superior results in terms of the relevant KPI. Absorber-free laser transmission welding enables the precise joining of identical polymers without additives or adhesives and is well-suited to meet the demands of the aforementioned industries. To attain sufficient absorption of laser energy without absorbent additives, thulium fiber lasers, which emit in the polymers’ intrinsic absorption spectrum, are used. Focusing the laser beam with a high numerical aperture provides significant intensity gradients inside the workpiece and enables selective fusing of the internal joining zone without affecting the surface of the device. Because seam size and position are crucial, the high-quality requirements demand internal weld seam monitoring. In this work, we propose a novel method to determine weld seam location and size using optical coherence tomography. Changes in optical material properties because of melting and re-solidification during welding allow for weld seam differentiation from the injection-molded base material. Automatic processing of the optical coherence tomography data enables the identification and measurement of the weld seam geometry. The results from our technique are consistent with microscopic images of microtome sections and demonstrate that weld seam localization in polyamide 6 is possible with an accuracy better than a tenth of a millimeter. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to create a realistic 3D model of a dragonfly wing captured with a high-resolution micro-CT. To represent geometry changes in span and chord length and their aerodynamic effects, numerical investigations are carried out at different wing positions. METHODS: The forewing of a Camacinia gigantea was captured using a micro-CT. After the wing was adapted an error-free 3D model resulted. The wing was cut every 5 mm and 2D numerical analyses were conducted in Fluent® 2020 R2 (ANSYS, Inc., Canonsburg, PA, USA). RESULTS: The highest lift coefficient, as well as the highest lift-to-drag ratio, resulted at 0 mm and an angle of attack (AOA) of 5∘. At AOAs of 10∘ or 15∘, the flow around the wing stalled and a Kármán vortex street behind the wing becomes CONCLUSIONS: The velocity is higher on the upper side of the wing compared to the lower side. The pressure acts vice versa. Due to the recirculation zones that are formed in valleys of the corrugation pattern the wing resembles the form of an airfoil. Magnesium materials combine their good mechanical properties with bioactivity, which make them interesting for guided bone regeneration and for the application as barrier membranes. In this study, the in vitro degradation behavior of thin magnesium films was investigated in cell medium and simulated body fluid. Three methods were applied to evaluate corrosion rates: measurements of (i) the gaseous volume evolved during immersion, (ii) volume change after immersion, and (iii) polarization curves. In this comparison, measurements of H2 development in Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium showed to be the most appropriate method, exhibiting a corrosion rate of 0.5 mm·year−1. Observed oxide and carbon contamination have a high impact on controlled degradation, suggesting that surface treatment of thin foils is necessary. The bioactivity test showed positive results; more detailed tests in this area are of interest. A common phenomenon, especially observed in violin beginners, is the tendency to elevate the right shoulder during playing the violin. This can probably lead to serious disorders in long-term practice with repetitive movements. OBJECTIVE: For this reason, this study investigated the relationship between the right shoulder elevation and the force in the right glenohumeral joint during violin playing. It was hypothesized that the forces in the right glenohumeral joint are higher during playing with the right shoulder raised compared to playing in normal posture. METHODS: Motion capture data from four experienced violinists was recorded and processed by means of musculoskeletal simulation to get the force and elevation angle while playing with raised shoulder and in normal position. RESULTS: The results indicate that the absolute values of the resulting force, as well as the forces in the mediolateral, inferosuperior, and anteroposterior directions, are higher in playing the violin with the shoulder raised than in a normal posture. CONCLUSIONS: Elevating the right shoulder while playing the violin may pose a potential problem. However, geometric irregularities inherent for L-PBF stents are expected to influence not only their mechanical behavior but also their interaction with the artery. In this study, the influence of geometrical irregularities on stent-artery interaction is evaluated within a numerical framework. Thus, computed arterial stresses induced by a reconstructed L-PBF stent model are compared to those induced by the intended stent model (also representing a stent geometry obtained from conventional manufacturing processes) and a modified CAD stent model that accounts for the increased strut thickness inherent for L-PBF stents. It was found that, similar to conventionally manufactured stents, arterial stresses are initially related to the basic stent design/topology, with the highest stresses occurring at the indentations of the stent struts. Compared to the stent CAD model, the L-PBF stent induces distinctly higher and more maximum volume stresses within the plaque and the arterial wall. In return, the modified CAD model overestimates the arterial stresses induced by the L-PBF stent due to its homogeneously increased strut thickness and thus its homogeneously increased geometric stiffness compared with the L-PBF stent. Therefore, the L-PBF-induced geometric irregularities must be explicitly considered when evaluating the L-PBF stent-induced stresses because the intended stent CAD model underestimates the arterial stresses, whereas the modified CAD model overestimates them. The arterial stresses induced by the L-PBF stent were still within the range of values reported for conventional stents in literature, suggesting that the use of L-PBF stents is conceivable in principle. However, because geometric irregularities, such as protruding features from the stent surface, could potentially damage the artery or lead to premature stent failure, further improvement of L-PBF stents is essential.
