This study compares an AI-generated application with a manually designed one in terms of usability and user experience. Forty-two participants evaluated efficiency, effectiveness, satisfaction, emotional responses, and behavioural patterns. The manual application outperformed the AI-generated one in most datasets, particularly in clarity, supportiveness, and comprehensibility, while speed, learnability, activation, creativity, and security showed no significant differences. Users reported more positive emotions and confident interactions with the manual application, whereas the AI application elicited uncertainty and frustration. These behavioural differences were also reflected in processing times and task completion rates, suggesting that AI-generated solutions currently struggle to meet established UX standards. Nevertheless, the AI builder demonstrated potential for rapid prototyping and low-effort website creation, offering advantages for users with limited technical skills or resources. The findings highlight both the opportunities and limitations of current AI-based web design tools and underline the importance of human-centered design expertise in achieving high-quality user experiences. However, as domain rules grow complex, LCD platforms may fail to do so effectively. Generative AI, driven by large language models (LLMs), offers source code generation from natural language but suffers from its non-deterministic black-box nature and limited explainability. Therefore, rather than having LLMs generate entire applications from single prompts, we advocate for a white-box approach allowing citizen developers to specify domain models semi-formally, attaching constraints and operations as natural language annotations. These annotations are fed incrementally into an LLM contextualized with the generated application stub. This results in deterministic and better explainable generation of static application components, while offering citizen developers an appropriate level of abstraction. We report on a case study in manufacturing execution systems, where the implementation of the approach provides first insights. Realizing these decisions involves the work of professionals in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) domain who nowadays collaborate via the methodology of building information modeling (BIM). At the same time, the citizen plays an integral role both in the data acquisition phase, while also being a beneficiary of the improved resource management strategies. In this paper, we present a prototype for a “digital energy twin” platform we designed in cooperation with the city of Regensburg. We show how our extensible platform de- sign can satisfy the various requirements of multiple user groups through a series of data processing solutions and visualizations, in- dicating valuable design and implementation guidelines for future projects. In particular, we focus on two example use cases concern- ing building electricity monitoring and BIM. By implementing a flexible data processing architecture we can involve citizens in the data acquisition process, meeting the demands of modern users regarding maximum transparency in the handling of their data. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) for the macroscopic detection of villous atrophy at routine esophagogastroduodenoscopy may improve diagnostic performance. Methods A dataset of 858 endoscopic images of 182 patients with villous atrophy and 846 images from 323 patients with normal duodenal mucosa was collected and used to train a ResNet 18 deep learning model to detect villous atrophy. An external data set was used to test the algorithm, in addition to six fellows and four board certified gastroenterologists. Fellows could consult the AI algorithm’s result during the test. From their consultation distribution, a stratification of test images into “easy” and “difficult” was performed and used for classified performance measurement. Results External validation of the AI algorithm yielded values of 90 %, 76 %, and 84 % for sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy, respectively. Fellows scored values of 63 %, 72 % and 67 %, while the corresponding values in experts were 72 %, 69 % and 71 %, respectively. AI consultation significantly improved all trainee performance statistics. While fellows and experts showed significantly lower performance for “difficult” images, the performance of the AI algorithm was stable. Conclusion In this study, an AI algorithm outperformed endoscopy fellows and experts in the detection of villous atrophy on endoscopic still images. AI decision support significantly improved the performance of non-expert endoscopists. The stable performance on “difficult” images suggests a further positive add-on effect in challenging cases. The purpose of this study is to investigate how an intelligent Intrusion Detection System (iIDS) can provide more security in IoT networks with a novel architecture, combining multiple classical and machine learning approaches. By combining classical security analysis methods and modern concepts of artificial intelligence, we increase the quality of attack detection and can therefore conduct dedicated attack suppression. The architectural image of the iIDS consists of different layers, which in parts achieve self-sufficient results. The results of the different modules are calculated by means of statement variables and evaluation techniques adapted for the individual module elements and subsequently combined by limit value considerations. The architecture image combines approaches for the analysis and processing of IoT network traffic and evaluates it to an aggregated score. From this result it can be determined whether the analyzed data indicates device misuse or attempted break-ins into the network. This study answers the questions whether a connection between classical and modern concepts for monitoring and analyzing IoT network traffic can be implemented meaningfully within a reliable architecture of an iIDS.
