Doch in der Tertiärstufe werden die Bildungswege wieder zusammengeführt und die Absolvent(inn)en aller Schulformen befinden sich in einer gemeinsamen Lernumgebung. Die vorgestellte empirische Untersuchung von über 450 Studierenden an zwei bayerischen Fachhochschulen hinsichtlich des Bildungshintergrunds und der Sprachkompetenzen belegt, dass die Lernenden in den nunmehr gemeinsamen Englischkursen im Tertiärbereich über stark unterschiedliche Kompetenzniveaus verfügen. Die Daten zeigen eine ausgeprägte Kaskade im Kompetenzniveau basierend auf der früheren Sekundarschulform, wobei Studierende der vertieften allgemeinbildenden Schule (Gymnasium) ihre Qualifikationen höher einschätzen als Studierende von berufsbildenden Sekundarschulen (FOS und BOS). Obwohl in allen bayerischen Sekundarschulformen mindestens das GER-Niveau B2 als Standard für Schulabgänger festgelegt ist, geben in der Stichprobe von Studierenden an Fachhochschulen mehr als die Hälfte der Lernenden das Niveau B1 in mindestens einer der Fertigkeiten für Englisch an; und etwas mehr als 8% der Studierenden berichten ihre Selbsteinschätzung in jeder Fertigkeit als Niveau B1 oder niedriger. Die Ergebnisse lassen erkennen, dass ein breites Spektrum an Kompetenzniveaus von B1 bis C1 an den Fachohochschulen häufig endemisch ist, und dass die derzeitige Praxis, Englischkurse im Tertiärbereich für die idealisierten B2-Lernenden zu gestalten, den Bedürfnissen vieler Studierenden nicht ausreichend entgegenkommt. T1 - Source substitution method for obtaining the power transmission from vibrating sources in buildings JF - Applied Acoustics N2 - This paper describes a method analogous to the airborne sound source substitution method, to estimate the vibrational power injected by a structure-borne sound source into the supporting building element. The injected vibrational power is required for prediction of the structure-borne sound pressure from vibrating equipment in buildings. The paper focuses on high-mobility sources connected to low-mobility receivers, a situation which is commonly encountered in heavyweight construction. The mobility mismatch simplifies the transformation of laboratory measurement data to prediction of transmitted power in-situ. Three case studies were performed. In the first study, the power injected by a simple test source into a resiliently supported aluminium plate was determined using direct and indirect methods. Source substitution was investigated with different calibration options: steady-state excitation, transient excitation, and spatial averaging. The source power could be determined within 4 dB, compared with direct measurements of the injected power. In the second study, the power injected by a second source into a concrete transmission suite floor was determined. The third study was of a combined heating and power unit on a masonry wall. In this study, a reference sound pressure level in a receiver room was calculated and compared with a criterion curve for the assessment of low-frequency noise complaints. The case studies demonstrate that structure-borne sound source substitution is a promising development of the reception plate method. While the latter can be used if a free reception plate is available, the former circumvents problems of determining the transmitted power into coupled plates and therefore has application to real building conditions. The use of the instrumented hammer for the calibration and the use of spatial averaging significantly simplify the method. The direct airborne sound insulation of 30 walls with cold-formed steel framing was measured in accordance with ASTM E90-09. The walls had steel studs with a depth of 92 mm (3-5/8”) or 152 mm (6”), and with a steel thickness of 1.09 mm (0.043”) or 1.37 mm (0.054”). Other parameters that were investigated included the number of layers and thickness of gypsum board, the cavity insulation, the stud spacing, and the use of resilient channels. The test results for some non-standard wall configurations that were tested for research purposes (e.g. for walls with gypsum board on one side only) are also included in this report. The direct airborne and impact sound insulation of 17 floors with cold-formed steel framing was measured in accordance with ASTM E90-09 and ASTM E492-09, respectively. The floors had steel joists with a depth of 254 mm (10”) or 317 mm (12.5”), and with a steel thickness of 1.37 mm (0.054”). The top surface of the floor/ceiling assemblies was composed of a corrugated steel deck with poured gypsum concrete, while the bottom surface was composed of a gypsum board ceiling on resilient channels. The influence of the joist depth and the number of layers and thickness of the ceiling gypsum board was investigated, as well as the influence of several floor coverings (e.g. laminate or carpet). The report presents the detailed specimen descriptions and specimen properties and the results from the standardized tests according to ASTM E90-09 and ASTM E492-09. Brief analyses of the parameters affecting the sound insulation of the steel-framed assemblies are provided. The tests presented in this report were part of a large research study that also included an investigation into the flanking sound transmission in cold-formed steel-framed buildings. Other methods exist to evaluate the communication performance of respirators, but historically the NIOSH standard test procedure has been used. After all, it is the focus on technical subject matter which students expect to differentiate engineering ESP from standard EFL. Yet ESP instructors, who frequently have a background in fields such as applied linguistics or education, often receive little input from technical specialists as to which specialist topics are most relevant to their target domain. Our research indicates that ESP instructors in higher education can leverage a valuable resource to enrich teaching effectiveness: students who have already gained professional experience. As part of a longitudinal study at two universities of applied sciences (UAS) in southern Germany, engineering students at the beginning of their first semester of compulsory technical English participate in an online survey. The course participants provide relevant biographical information such as work experience and evaluate the perceived importance of a selection of skills and applications for a Technical English course. The surveys, administered in October 2016 and October 2017 and encompassing nearly 1000 respondents, provide compelling insights. Analysis reveals conclusive correlations between the perceived importance of course components and students' declared level of previous work experience. Listening comprehension, reading comprehension, process description, and test and measurement are topics whose importance correlates positively with work experience level. In addition, there are clear trends relating work experience level with the importance of the reading and writing of technical documents as well as communication and interaction. This data provides empirically-founded criteria for selecting the topics to include in the scope of a Technical English course for engineers, informed by the judgment of students with occupational experience. Additionally, recognizing that students with work experience have legitimate practitioner credibility allows instructors to identify and select relevant subject matter in concordance with experienced students' learning objectives. The goal of the proposed magnet system is to minimize the coil-current effect and to optimize the shielding at the same time. In the proposed design, a permanent magnet system with two gaps, each housing a coil, is employed to minimize the coil current effect, by reducing the linear coil-current dependence reported for the single air gap design by at least one order of magnitude. Both air gaps of the magnet are completely surrounded by high-permeability material, and hence the coils are shielded from outside magnetic fields and no magnetic field leaks outside of the magnet system. An example of the new magnet system is given and the analysis shows that the magnetic field in the air gap can be optimized to meet the requirement to be used in Kibble balances. T1 - Directed Self-Assembly of Ge Quantum Dots Using Focused Si2+ Ion Beam Patterning JF - scientific reports N2 - We show that templating a Si surface with a focused beam of Si2+ or Si+ ions can create suitable nucleation sites for the subsequent growth of self-assembled Ge quantum dots by chemical vapor deposition. To determine the mechanism of patterning we use atomic force microscopy to show that, similar to Ga+ patterning, the formation of a surface pit is required to enable control over Ge quantum dot locations. We find that relatively high implantation doses are required to achieve patterning, and these doses lead to amorphization of the substrate. We assess the degree to which the substrate crystallinity can be recovered by subsequent processing. Using in situ transmission electron microscopy heating experiments we find that recrystallization is possible at the growth temperature of the Ge quantum dots, but defects remain that follow the pattern of the initial implantation. We discuss the formation mechanism of the defects and the benefits of using Si ions for patterning both defects and quantum dots on Si substrates. I-Vcharacteristics at different pressure levels show a decrease of emission current with rising pressure. The initial characteristics can be restored by heating the FEA up to 110 °C during electron emission. The I-V characterization of the p-type sample showed a pronounced saturation for voltages higher than 500 V and a maximum emission current of 39 nA. The metallized sample revealed a FN-like emission up to several μA. The metallized and the p-type sample operating below the saturation region showed high current fluctuations of ±16%. Whereas, the metallized sample with current regulation and the p-type sample in the saturation yielded a current stability of ±0.4% and ±0.3%, respectively. Investigations in the frequency domain revealed the for field emission typical 1/f-noise. By operating in the saturation region (p-type sample) or using an emission current regulation (metallized sample) the noise level was reduced by at least 20 dB. Finally, the p-type sample was illuminated by a light emitting diode to increase and modulate the emission current in the saturation region. The emission current was increased by a factor of 3.7 to 145 nA. With this configuration we emulated an unstable emission behavior and evaluated the performance of our emission current regulation circuit. Optical switching under a halogen lamp illumination resulted in at least 2-4 times higher saturation currents and showed a linear dependence between the illumination power and the FE current, for both types of structures. This is important for a better understanding of plasma- induced flow characteristics. In this work, a method for extracting these parameters from integral measurement data is presented. A model describing the characteristics of a single emitter, including the saturation as a function of the applied voltage and the emitter radius, is developed. It is shown that experimental data of field emitter arrays can be represented as the sum of these functions and the characteristic parameters can be fitted to field emission data of an array. Using this method, the values of the radii as well as the parameters of distribution models can be determined directly. Analysis of experimental data from p-type Si emitter arrays shows that only 1–2% of the tips contribute significantly. Der Ansatz verspricht einfach zugängliche und leicht wiederholbare Probennahme die zum einen non-invasiv ist und zugleich Rückschlüsse auf Vorgänge im menschlichen Körper und bspw. dessen Gesundheitszustand zulässt. Seit Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts gibt es Massenspektrometer die es ermöglicht haben mehrere Tausend verschiedene Stoffe in der Ausatemluft nachzuweisen. Diese Technologien verbessern sich stetig und ermöglichen es die Vorgänge und Zusammenhänge zwischen Zusammensetzung der Ausatemluft und systemischen Prozessen besser zu verstehen. Die bei Studien mit Massenspektrometern ermittelten Biomarker, deren qualitative und quantitative Detektion Gesundheitsdiagnosen ermöglichen, haben aber noch nicht den Weg in den klinischen Alltag gefunden. Das Problem sind meistens die hohen Anschaffungskosten, komplizierte Datenauswertung und zumeist geringe Verfügbarkeit und Immobilität dieser Messgeräte. Die photoakustische Spektroskopie ist eine selektive und hochsensitive Messmethode, die es ermöglichen soll den Biomarker „Aceton“, der grundsätzlich die Metabolisierung von Fetten widerspiegelt, schnell und reproduzierbar quantitativ zu detektieren. Dabei müssen Hindernisse wie Querempfindlichkeiten, ausgelöst durch die komplexe Zusammensetzung der Messmatrix Atemgas, bei gleichzeitig kleine Aceton Konzentrationen (200-800 parts-per-billion) überwunden werden. Verschiedene Wellenlängenbereiche mit unterschiedlichen Lichtquellen, akustisch resonante sowie innovative Messzellendesigns und anspruchsvolle Datenauswertung mittels komplexer Algorithmik sind nötig um das Ziel, die Entwicklung eines kompakten, günstigen und zuverlässigen Acetonsensors, zu erreichen. Y1 - 2018 ER - TY - JOUR A1 - Rück, Thomas A1 - Bierl, Rudolf A1 - Matysik, Frank-Michael T1 - NO2 trace gas monitoring in air using off-beam quartz enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) and interference studies towards CO2, H2O and acoustic noise JF - Sensors and Actuators B: Chemical N2 - We present the development and characterization as well as comprehensive interference studies of a photoacoustic NO2 trace gas detection system. The system is based on an off-beam quartz enhanced photoacoustic scheme (off-beam QEPAS) and signal generation was initiated by amplitude modulating a low-cost diode laser emitting at 450 nm. The QEPAS sensor element features double-resonant amplification, still it is only ∼ 5 × 5 × 2.5 mm in size. The individual and combined resonance characteristics were investigated and specified to 52 dB amplification, adding up 15 dB acoustic- and 37 dB mechanical-resonance amplification. The linearity of the photoacoustic signal dependency on the analyte concentration was verified from 200 ppbV to 100 ppmV NO2 in synthetic air. The detection limit (3σ) was determined to 1.8 ppbV using a lock-in time constant of 10 s and an averaging time of 20 s. The normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient was specified to 2.5·10−8 W cm−1 Hz−0.5. The stability of the signal was investigated over time and a slight drift by 1‰ was observed after 30 min without temperature stabilizing the photoacoustic cell (PAC). Noise analysis was performed by means of Allan deviation and the inverse dependency of response time and precision of the system on the lock-in time constant was outlined. We performed interference analyses towards N2, O2, CO2, H2O and acoustic noise, respectively. Although neither spectral interferences nor losses due to slow NO2 VT-relaxation were observed, O2 was identified to cause a 15% signal drop due to VVNO2-O2-relaxation. Changing H2O concentrations were found to cause acoustic detuning, which cannot be compensated by adjusting the frequency of modulation, because of the double-resonant feature of the PAC. However, alternative approaches of compensation were discussed. Finally, we carried out heavy traffic noise simulations and determined the QEPAS setup to be 46 times less susceptible towards ambient noise compared to standard microphone-based photoacoustic setups.
