    <title language="mul">FMS-Berichte Sommersemester 2024</title>
    <abstract language="deu">Dieser Bericht entstand ursprünglich auf Initiative der Studierenden des damals neuen Masterstudiengangs „Elektro- und Informationstechnik (MEI)“ an der OTH Regensburg, die an der Pflichtlehrveranstaltung „Forschungsmethoden und Seminar (FMS)“ im Wintersemester 2020/21 teilnahmen.&#13;
&#13;
Diese Lehrveranstaltung hat das Ziel, systematisch an das wissenschaftliche Arbeiten, speziell die Wissenschaftskommunikation, heranzuführen. Daher ist im Laufe der Veranstaltung geeignete Literatur zu einem individuellen Thema zu recherchieren, sind Veröffentlichungen auf ihre Relevanz hin zu beurteilen und letztendlich gilt es eine eigene Ausarbeitung basierend auf der Literaturrecherche zu erstellen und diese in einem Vortrag zu präsentieren.&#13;
&#13;
Parallel dazu wird im Theorieteil die entsprechende Hinführung zu den verschiedenen Elementen der Wissenschaftskommunikation vermittelt:&#13;
&#13;
• Bedeutung der Wissenschaftskommunikation für die Arbeit der Ingenieure in Forschung und Entwicklung&#13;
• Literaturrecherche, Suchmaschinen, Sichtung und Analyse vorhandener Publikationen, Bewertung der Qualität aufgefundener Fachliteratur, Auswahl geeigneter Materialien für die eigene Arbeit&#13;
• Aufbereitung und Darstellung der recherchierten technischer Inhalte in Form einer seitenanzahlbegrenzten wissenschaftlichen Ausarbeitung&#13;
• Einhalten formaler Randbedingungen bzgl. Strukturierung, einschl. Bildnachweise und Zitationsstile&#13;
• Peer-review-Prozess bei wertschätzender Beurteilung der Leistung anderer&#13;
• Publikumsangepasstes Aufbereiten komplexer fachlicher Inhalte mit hochschulöffentlicher Präsentation der Ergebnisse&#13;
• Führen mündlicher wissenschaftlicher Diskurse&#13;
&#13;
Die präsentierten Themen beruhen nicht auf eigener Forschungstätigkeit, sondern sind als einführende Reviewartikel zum jeweiligen vorgegebenen technischen oder gesellschaftspolitischen Forschungsthema zu verstehen.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">Kinetic cooling in mid-infrared methane photoacoustic spectroscopy: A quantitative analysis via digital twin verification</title>
    <abstract language="eng">This study presents a detailed quantitative analysis of kinetic cooling in methane photoacoustic spectroscopy, leveraging the capabilities of a digital twin model. Using a quantum cascade laser tuned to 1210.01 cm⁻¹, we investigated the effects of varying nitrogen-oxygen matrix compositions on the photoacoustic signals of 15 ppmV methane. Notably, the photoacoustic signal amplitude decreased with increasing oxygen concentration, even falling below the background signal at oxygen levels higher than approximately 6 %V. This phenomenon was attributed to kinetic cooling, where thermal energy is extracted from the surrounding gas molecules rather than added, as validated by complex vector analysis using a previously published digital twin model. The model accurately reproduced complex signal patterns through simulations, providing insights into the underlying molecular mechanisms by quantifying individual collision contributions. These findings underscore the importance of digital twins in understanding the fundamentals of photoacoustic signal generation at the molecular level.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">Neutrophil extracellular traps -a potential trigger for the development of thrombocytopenia during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation</title>
    <abstract language="eng">Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) have recently emerged as a potential link between inflammation, immunity, and thrombosis, as well as other coagulation disorders which present a major challenge in the context of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). By examining blood from ECMO patients for NETs and their precursors and correlating them with clinical and laboratory biomarkers of coagulation and inflammation, this study aims to evaluate the association between the presence of NETs in the bloodstream of ECMO patients and the development of potentially severe coagulation disorders during ECMO therapy.&#13;
Therefore, blood samples were collected from healthy volunteers (n=13) and patients receiving veno-venous (VV) ECMO therapy (n=10). To identify NETs and their precursors, DNA and myeloperoxidase as well as granulocyte marker CD66b were visualized simultaneously by immunofluorescence staining in serial blood smears. Differentiation of DNA-containing objects and identification of NETs and their precursors was performed semiautomatically by a specific algorithm using the shape and size of DNA staining and the intensity of MPO and CD66b signal.&#13;
Neutrophil extracellular traps and their precursors could be detected in blood smears from patients requiring VV ECMO. Compared to volunteers, ECMO patients presented significantly higher rates of NETs and NET precursors as well as an increased proportion of neutrophil granulocytes in all detected nucleated cells. A high NET rate prior to the initiation of ECMO therapy was associated with both increased iL-6 and TNF-α levels as an expression of a high cytokine burden. These patients with increased NET release also presented an earlier and significantly more pronounced decrease in platelet counts and ATIII activity following initiation of therapy compared with patients with less elevated NETs. These findings provide further indications for the development of immune-mediated acquired thrombocytopenia in ECMO patients.</abstract>
