    <title language="eng">Precise Monitoring of Returning Sensation in Digital Nerve Lesions by 3-D Imaging: A Proof-of-Concept Study</title>
    <abstract language="eng">Digital nerve lesions result in a loss of tactile sensation reflected by an anesthetic area (AA) at the radial or ulnar aspect of the respective digit. Yet, available tools to monitor the recovery of tactile sense have been criticized for their lack of validity. However, the precise quantification of AA dynamics by three-dimensional (3-D) imaging could serve as an accurate surrogate to monitor recovery following digital nerve repair.&#13;
&#13;
For validation, AAs were marked on digits of healthy volunteers to simulate the AA of an impaired cutaneous innervation. Three dimensional models were composed from raw images that had been acquired with a 3-D camera (Vectra H2) to precisely quantify relative AA for each digit (3-D models, n= 80). Operator properties varied regarding individual experience in 3-D imaging and image processing. Additionally, the concept was applied in a clinical case study.&#13;
&#13;
Images taken by experienced photographers were rated better quality (p&lt; 0.001) and needed less processing time (p= 0.020). Quantification of the relative AA was neither altered significantly by experience levels of the photographer (p= 0.425) nor the image assembler (p= 0.749).&#13;
&#13;
The proposed concept allows precise and reliable surface quantification of digits and can be performed consistently without relevant distortion by lack of examiner experience. Routine 3-D imaging of the AA has the great potential to provide visual evidence of various returning states of sensation and to convert sensory nerve recovery into a metric variable with high responsiveness to temporal progress.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">Practitioners’ Perceptions on the Adoption of Low Code Development Platforms</title>
    <abstract language="eng">Organizations are under increasing pressure to develop applications within budget and time at high quality. Therefore, multiple organizations adopt Low Code Development Platforms (LCDP) to develop applications faster and cheaper compared to traditional application development. However, current research on LCDP adoption lacks empirical grounding as well as a deeper understanding of the importance of adoption drivers and inhibitors. We conducted semi-structured interviews and a Delphi study with seventeen experts to address these gaps. As a result, we identified twelve drivers and nineteen inhibitors for adopting LCDPs. We show that the experts have a consensus on the most and the least important drivers and inhibitors for LCDP adoption. Yet, the ranking of the drivers and inhibitors between the most and least important is highly context dependent. For some drivers and inhibitors, the experts’ ranking is similar to academic literature, whereas, for others, it differs. In conclusion, the study at hand empirically validates drivers and inhibitors for LCDP adoption, adds six new drivers and six new inhibitors to the body of knowledge, and analyses the importance of these factors.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">Achieving Optimal Reactive Power Compensation in Distribution Grids by Using Industrial Compensation Systems</title>
    <abstract language="eng">This paper presents a method for integrating industrial consumers owning compensation systems as alternative reactive power sources into grid operating processes. In remuneration, they receive a market-based provision of reactive power. The aim is to analyze the potential of reactive power compensation systems of industrial companies connected to medium-voltage (10 kV–30 kV) AC grids in order to increase the reactive power ability of distribution grids. Measurement methods and reactive power potential results of six industrial companies are presented to characterize the amount and temporal availability of their reactive power potential. The presented approach for using the decentralized reactive power potential is a centralized reactive power control method and is based on optimal power flow (OPF) calculations. An optimization algorithm based on linear programming is used to coordinate a reactive power retrieval tuned to the actual demand. The influencing quantities are the current grid status (voltage and load flow capacity reserves at grid nodes and power lines) and the current reactive power potential of the reactive power sources. The compensation impact of six measured industrial companies on an exemplary medium-voltage grid is shown by an application example.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">Techno-Economic Analysis of Carbon Dioxide Separation for an Innovative Energy Concept towards Low-Emission Glass Melting</title>
    <abstract language="eng">The currently still high fossil energy demand is forcing the glass industry to search for innovative approaches for the reduction in CO2 emissions and the integration of renewable energy sources. In this paper, a novel power-to-methane concept is presented and discussed for this purpose. A special focus is on methods for the required CO2 capture from typical flue gases in the glass industry, which have hardly been explored to date. To close this research gap, process simulation models are developed to investigate post-combustion CO2 capture by absorption processes, followed by a techno-economic evaluation. Due to reduced flue gas volume, the designed CO2 capture plant is found to be much smaller (40 m3 absorber column volume) than absorption-based CO2 separation processes for power plants (12,560 m3 absorber column volume). As there are many options for waste heat utilization in the glass industry, the waste heat required for CO2 desorption can be generated in a particularly efficient and cost-effective way. The resulting CO2 separation costs range between 41 and 42 EUR/t CO2, depending on waste heat utilization for desorption. These costs are below the values of 50–65 EUR/t CO2 for comparable industrial applications. Despite these promising economic results, there are still some technical restrictions in terms of solvent degradation due to the high oxygen content in flue gas compositions. The results of this study point towards parametric studies for approaching these issues, such as the use of secondary and tertiary amines as solvents, or the optimization of operating conditions such as stripper pressure for further cost reductions potential.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">Correlation of Acceleration Curves in Gravitational Direction for Different Body Segments during High-Impact Jumping Exercises</title>
    <abstract language="eng">Osteoporosis is a common disease of old age. However, in many cases, it can be very well prevented and counteracted with physical activity, especially high-impact exercises. Wearables have the potential to provide data that can help with continuous monitoring of patients during therapy phases or preventive exercise programs in everyday life. This study aimed to determine the accuracy and reliability of measured acceleration data at different body positions compared to accelerations at the pelvis during different jumping exercises. Accelerations at the hips have been investigated in previous studies with regard to osteoporosis prevention. Data were collected using an IMU-based motion capture system (Xsens) consisting of 17 sensors. Forty-nine subjects were included in this study. The analysis shows the correlation between impacts and the corresponding drop height, which are dependent on the respective exercise. Very high correlations (0.83–0.94) were found between accelerations at the pelvis and the other measured segments at the upper body. The foot sensors provided very weak correlations (0.20–0.27). Accelerations measured at the pelvis during jumping exercises can be tracked very well on the upper body and upper extremities, including locations where smart devices are typically worn, which gives possibilities for remote and continuous monitoring of programs.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">MoₓWₓ₋₁S₂ Nanotubes for Advanced Field Emission Application</title>
    <abstract language="eng">Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) nanotubes complement the field of low-dimensional materials with their quasi-1D morphology and a wide set of intriguing properties. By introducing different transition metals into the crystal structure, their properties can be tailored for specific purpose and applications. Herein, the characterization and a subsequent preparation of single-nanotube field emission devices of MoxWx-1S2 nanotubes prepared via the chemical vapor transport reaction is presented. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction  indicate that the molybdenum and tungsten atoms are randomly distributed within the crystal structure and that the material is highly crystalline. High resolution transmission electron microscopy  and electron diffraction (ED) patterns further corroborate these findings. A detailed analysis of the ED patterns from an eight-layer nanotube reveal that the nanotubes grow in the 2H structure, with each shell consists of one bilayer. The work function of the nanotubes is comparable to that of pure MoS2 and lower of pure WS2 NTs, making them ideal candidates for field emission applications. Two devices with different geometrical setup are prepared and tested as field emitters, showing promising results for single nanotube field emission applications.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">Error-Correcting Mean-Teacher: Corrections instead of consistency-targets applied to semi-supervised medical image segmentation</title>
    <abstract language="eng">Semantic segmentation is an essential task in medical imaging research. Many powerful deep-learning-based approaches can be employed for this problem, but they are dependent on the availability of an expansive labeled dataset. In this work, we augment such supervised segmentation models to be suitable for learning from unlabeled data. Our semi-supervised approach, termed Error-Correcting Mean-Teacher, uses an exponential moving average model like the original Mean Teacher but introduces our new paradigm of error correction. The original segmentation network is augmented to handle this secondary correction task. Both tasks build upon the core feature extraction layers of the model. For the correction task, features detected in the input image are fused with features detected in the predicted segmentation and further processed with task-specific decoder layers. The combination of image and segmentation features allows the model to correct present mistakes in the given input pair. The correction task is trained jointly on the labeled data. On unlabeled data, the exponential moving average of the original network corrects the student’s prediction. The combined outputs of the students’ prediction with the teachers’ correction form the basis for the semi-supervised update. We evaluate our method with the 2017 and 2018 Robotic Scene Segmentation data, the ISIC 2017 and the BraTS 2020 Challenges, a proprietary Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection dataset, Cityscapes, and Pascal VOC 2012. Additionally, we analyze the impact of the individual components and examine the behavior when the amount of labeled data varies, with experiments performed on two distinct segmentation architectures. Our method shows improvements in terms of the mean Intersection over Union over the supervised baseline and competing methods. Code is available at https://github.com/CloneRob/ECMT.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">Detection of duodenal villous atrophy on endoscopic images using a deep learning algorithm</title>
    <abstract language="eng">Background and aims&#13;
Celiac disease with its endoscopic manifestation of villous atrophy is underdiagnosed worldwide. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) for the macroscopic detection of villous atrophy at routine esophagogastroduodenoscopy may improve diagnostic performance.&#13;
&#13;
Methods&#13;
A dataset of 858 endoscopic images of 182 patients with villous atrophy and 846 images from 323 patients with normal duodenal mucosa was collected and used to train a ResNet 18 deep learning model to detect villous atrophy. An external data set was used to test the algorithm, in addition to six fellows and four board certified gastroenterologists. Fellows could consult the AI algorithm’s result during the test. From their consultation distribution, a stratification of test images into “easy” and “difficult” was performed and used for classified performance measurement.&#13;
&#13;
Results&#13;
External validation of the AI algorithm yielded values of 90 %, 76 %, and 84 % for sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy, respectively. Fellows scored values of 63 %, 72 % and 67 %, while the corresponding values in experts were 72 %, 69 % and 71 %, respectively. AI consultation significantly improved all trainee performance statistics. While fellows and experts showed significantly lower performance for “difficult” images, the performance of the AI algorithm was stable.&#13;

Conclusion&#13;
In this study, an AI algorithm outperformed endoscopy fellows and experts in the detection of villous atrophy on endoscopic still images. AI decision support significantly improved the performance of non-expert endoscopists. The stable performance on “difficult” images suggests a further positive add-on effect in challenging cases.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">Planning Principles for Integrating Community Empowerment into Zero-Net Carbon Transformation</title>
    <abstract language="eng">The adoption of the UN 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals is a landmark in international sustainability politics. For example, Europe has set ambitious targets to achieve 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030. However, numerous case studies from different countries have found that accelerating the transition to net-zero carbon emissions is easily hampered by the lack of a coherent systems framework, and that implementation gaps remain at the community level. These barriers are often due to a lack of an adequate end-user (i.e., household) input and early planning participation. This work therefore aims to improve on conventional planning methods that do not reflect innovative technologies with uncertainty and may not be applicable due to the lack of community empowerment, which is a dynamic learning and intervention opportunity for end-users at different planning stages (i.e., outreach, survey, planning, implementation, management, and maintenance). Using the lessons learned from participatory action research, whereby the author was involved as a project director throughout the planning and design process, we identified a&#13;
six-step cycle principle. The steps are (1) collective action commitments, (2) local values and resource identification, (3) carbon footprint inventory, (4) optimized integration of environment, economy, and energy action plans, (5) Flexible strategic energy system plans, and (6) digital performance monitoring. Ultimately, the outcomes provide application support for policymakers and planners and stimulate community engagement to contribute to the achievement of zero net carbon emissions.</abstract>

    <title language="deu">Präventionsforschung mit Menschen im Alter</title>
    <abstract language="deu">Mit dem demografischen Wandel wird der Anteil der institutionalisierten Menschen im hohen Alter in den kommenden Jahrzehnten stark zunehmen. Sie sind oftmals betroffen von altersbedingten Einschränkungen in der Kommunikation, dem Erleben von Einsamkeit, Einbußen in der Lebensqualität und tragen ein erhöhtes Risiko, an einer Demenz zu erkranken. Mit Blick auf die mögliche Entwicklung logopädisch relevanter Beeinträchtigungen erscheint es sinnvoll, entsprechende Präventionsmaßnahmen zu erarbeiten. Die Rekrutierung und Einbindung der Zielgruppe gestaltet sich durch ihre institutionelle Einbettung und besonderen Bedarfe komplex. Barrieren und potenzielle Förderfaktoren für die Forschung mit Bewohner*innen von Senioreneinrichtungen werden anhand der aktuellen Literatur und der Erfahrungen aus dem Forschungsprojekt BaSeTaLK vorgestellt. Es werden erste Ideen generiert, wie sich die genannten Herausforderungen durch die Einbindung von Logopäd*innen an der Schnittstelle von Forschung und Praxis überwinden lassen und welche besondere Rolle auch Studierende der Logopädie in der geriatrischen Forschung einnehmen können. Außerdem wird der Mehrwert für die klinisch-praktische Versorgung diskutiert.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">Ready to Leap (by Co-Design)? Join Order Optimisation on Quantum Hardware</title>
    <abstract language="eng">The prospect of achieving computational speedups by exploiting quantum phenomena makes the use of quantum processing units (QPUs) attractive for many algorithmic database problems. Query optimisation, which concerns problems that typically need to explore large search spaces, seems like an ideal match for the known quantum algorithms. We present the first quantum implementation of join ordering, which is one of the most investigated and fundamental query optimisation problems, based on a reformulation to quadratic binary unconstrained optimisation problems. We empirically characterise our method on two state-of-the-art approaches (gate-based quantum computing and quantum annealing), and identify speed-ups compared to the best know classical join ordering approaches for input sizes that can be processed with current quantum annealers. However, we also confirm that limits of early-stage technology are quickly reached.&#13;
Current QPUs are classified as noisy, intermediate scale quantum computers (NISQ), and are restricted by a variety of limitations that reduce their capabilities as compared to ideal future quantum computers, which prevents us from scaling up problem dimensions and reaching practical utility. To overcome these challenges, our formulation accounts for specific QPU properties and limitations, and allows us to trade between achievable solution quality and possible problem size.&#13;
In contrast to all prior work on quantum computing for query optimisation and database-related challenges, we go beyond currently available QPUs, and explicitly target the scalability limitations: Using insights gained from numerical simulations and our experimental analysis, we identify key criteria for co-designing QPUs to improve their usefulness for join ordering, and show how even relatively minor physical architectural improvements can result in substantial enhancements. Finally, we outline a path towards practical utility of custom-designed QPUs.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">A measurement-based model for image reconstruction in MPI using a FFL</title>
    <abstract language="eng">Most of the common model-based reconstruction schemes in magnetic particle imaging (MPI) use idealized assumptions, e.g., of an ideal field-free-line (FFL) topology. However, the magnetic fields that are generated in real MPI scanners have distortions and, therefore, model-based approaches often lead to inaccurate reconstructions and may contain artifacts. In order to improve the reconstruction quality in MPI, more realistic MPI models need to be derived. In the present work, we address this problem and present a hybrid model for MPI that allows us to incorporates real measurements of the applied magnetic fields. We will explain that the measurements, that are needed to setup a model for the magnetic fields, can be obtained in a novel calibration procedure that is independent of the resolution and which is much less time-consuming than the one employed in measurement-based MPI reconstructions.We will also present a discretization strategy for this model, that can be used in context of algebraic reconstructions. The presented approach was validated on simulated data in [1], however, its evaluation on real data is a topic for future research.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">Regularization of Inverse Problems with Translation Invariant Frames</title>
    <abstract language="eng">In various fields of applications, inverse problems are characterized by their sensitivity to data perturbations which can cause severe reconstruction errors. Hence, regularization procedures are employed in order to ensure stability and reconstruction quality. To overcome limitations of classical approaches such as the filtered singular value decomposition (SVD), frame based&#13;
diagonalization methods have been studied in the recent years, e.g., wavelet-vagulette (WVD) decomposition. While these methods can be well adapted to the problem at hand, it is well-known, that the lack of translation invariance in multiscale systems can cause specific artifacts in the recovered object. Thus, to overcome these drawbacks we use the translation invariant diagonal frame decomposition (TI-DFD) of linear operators. For illustration, we construct a TI-WVD for one-dimensional integration operator, and confirm our theoretical findings by numerical simulations.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">On the application of adsorber plate heat exchangers in thermally driven chillers</title>
    <abstract language="eng">The effect of both heat and mass transfer characteristic lengths (HTCL, MTCL) of two different adsorber plate heat exchangers (APHE), for application in an adsorption chiller, on the adsorption and desorption kinetics is investigated. Three representative test frames (TF1-TF3) are prepared to examine small-scale adsorbent samples of the microporous silica gel (Siogel of Oker-Chemie, Germany) applying the volumetric large-temperature-jump methodology at different operating conditions. Based on the obtained kinetic data, an analytical model has been developed to predict the specific cooling power (SCP) and the coefficient of performance (COP) of a single-bed adsorption chiller comprising the studied APHEs. It turned out that, within the tested range of HTCL and MTCL, it can be concluded that, the adsorption kinetics are mainly influenced by the MTCL, while the desorption kinetics are dominated by the HTCL of the adsorbent domain. Applying Siogel as loose pellets inside a newly introduced APHE results in of 423.3 and 182.7 W⋅kg−1, at the evaporator temperatures of 15 °C and 5 °C, respectively. Herein, the condenser and adsorber-end temperatures amount to 30 °C and the desorption-end temperature to 90 °C. The corresponding s amount to 0.50 and 0.40, respectively, which represent quite promising results for further design optimizations.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">Regularization of inverse problems by filtered diagonal frame decomposition</title>
    <abstract language="eng">Inverse problems are at the heart of many practical problems such as image reconstruction or nondestructive testing. A characteristic feature is their instability with respect to data perturbations. To stabilize the inversion process, regularization methods must be developed and applied. In this paper, we introduce the concept of filtered diagonal frame decomposition, which extends the classical filtered SVD to the case of frames. The use of frames as generalized singular systems allows a better match to a given class of potential solutions and is also beneficial for problems where the SVD is not analytically available. We show that filtered diagonal frame decompositions yield convergent regularization methods, derive convergence rates under source conditions and prove order optimality. Our analysis applies to bounded and unbounded forward operators. As a practical application of our tools, we study filtered diagonal frame decompositions for inverting the Radon transform as an unbounded operator on L2(R2).</abstract>

    <title language="eng">Determination of the optimal power ratio between electrolysis and renewable energy to investigate the effects on the hydrogen production costs</title>
    <abstract language="eng">Green hydrogen via renewable powered electrolysis has a high relevance in decarbonization and supply security. Achieving economically competitive hydrogen production costs is a major challenge in times of an energy price crisis. Our objective is to show the economically optimal installed capacity of electrolysers in relation to wind and solar power so swift and credible statements can be made regarding the system design. The ratio between renewable generation and electrolysis power as well as scaling effects, operating behaviour and development of costs are considered. Hydrogen production costs are calculated for four exemplary real PV and wind sites and different ratios of electrolysis to renewable power for the year 2020. The ideal ratio for PV systems is between 14% and 73% and for wind between 3.3% and 143% for low and high full load hours. The lowest hydrogen production costs are identified at 2.53 €/kg for 50 MW wind power and 72 MW electrolysis power. The results provide plant constructors the possibility to create a cost-optimized design via an optimum ratio of electrolysis to renewable capacity. Therefore, the procedures for planning and dimensioning of selected systems can be drastically simplified.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">Improvements for building-performance simulations by a comparative finite-element method analysis</title>
    <abstract language="eng">This paper presents a method to improve building-performance simulations (BPS) by the comparison and analysis of different approaches based on finite-element method (FEM) models. The lumped parameter method (LPM) is used in several BPS programs and tools. It has the advantage of fast computing times and comparably good accuracy for thermal and energy loads. With the help of detailed FEM simulations, it is possible to further improve the degree of detail and accuracy while maintaining the high simulation speed.&#13;
&#13;
In this work, we compare time-dependent results for local temperatures in a generic reference room within a given periode of time. In a second step, the differences between the models with respect to various physical effects are analyzed and used to introduce additional equations into the LPM model in order to improve its accuracy. Thus, we discuss potentials for improvement for BPS and demonstrate a method of a practical implementation.&#13;
&#13;
The results show minor differences of less than 0.1 K for radiation and heat transfer, so their level of detail in BPS is appropriate. In these terms, no improvements were pursued within the work. However, the FEM simulation is capable of calculating the internal convective heat transfer and thermal bridges more accurately due to the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and the geometrically precise representation of the FEM model. Here, deviations of up to 1 K in room temperature (convective heat transfer) and up to 0.5 K in wall temperatures (thermal bridges) were pointed out.&#13;
&#13;
By improving the LPM with equations obtained from the FEM, these deviations can be reduced to less than 0.2 K, which is a considerable improvement in accuracy.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">On the significance of accelerator enriched layers in wet-mix shotcrete</title>
    <abstract language="eng">The application process, which gives shotcrete its name is a robust and established method, dating back to the beginning of the 20th century. Since then, the spraying process has been significantly enhanced. However, during the last decades no major technical changes have been made. In this study the wet - mix shotcrete process including the dosing of accelerator was investigated. For this, we monitored the concrete and accelerator pressure with 5 sensors in the pumps and pipes, and analysed the accelerator distribution in the hardened shotcrete matrix. The recorded pressure fluctuations clearly indicated that the pumping of the concrete with a double-piston pump led to flow pulsations. The pressure along the accelerator pipes, controlled by a peristaltic pump, was not steady either. However, the accelerator flow pulsation had a higher frequency than that of the concrete flow. This misalignment led to changes in the accelerator to concrete ratio during the spraying process. The impact of these incongruent concrete and accelerator flows on the resulting hardened shotcrete was visually analysed with the use of 0.02 % uranin as fluorescent tracer added to the accelerator. The tracer distribution showed that changes in the accelerator/concrete ratio led to the formation of ‘accelerator layers’, layers with higher accelerator concentrations in the hardened shotcrete. These layers show differences in chemistry, mineralogy and open porosity compared to the rest of the shotcrete matrix. The presence of accelerator enriched layers can have detrimental effects on the shotcrete properties, especially affecting the durability and mechanical performance. In consequence, we recommend a revision of the shotcrete process to eliminate these inhomogeneities.</abstract>

    <title language="deu">Strategien zur Implementierung der Kreislaufwirtschaft beim Bauen mit Beton</title>
    <abstract language="deu">Beton ist das am meisten verwendete Baumaterial weltweit. CO2-Emissionen, die bei der Zement- und Betonherstellung an-fallen, müssen reduziert, Produktionsmethoden verbessert und Betonzusammensetzungen angepasst werden. Zudem steigt die Nachfrage nach Beton, während fossile Brennstoffreserven und die Verfügbarkeit von mineralischen Rohstoffen abnehmen. Hinzu kommt, dass bei der Betonherstellung neue mineralogi-sche Phasen entstehen, was ein echtes Recycling erschwert. Die Implementierung kreislaufkonformer Strategien wie der Verlängerung der Nutzungsphase ist ein wichtiger Hebel, um Umweltwirkungen im Bauwesen zu reduzieren, und erfordert die ganzheitliche Betrachtung des Bauwerks. Besonders großes Potenzial liefern hier die digital vernetzte und modellba-sierte Planung sowie die darauf aufbauende robotergestützte Fertigung der Bauteile, mit der sich leicht lösbare Verbindun-gen, einfach rückbaubare, multifunktionale, flexible sowie bzgl. Dauerhaftigkeit optimierte Strukturen ökologisch und kosten-effizient generieren lassen. Technisch wären bereits viele Pro-jekte in der Praxis umsetzbar, allerdings müssen hierzu die rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen verbessert und bürokratische Hürden abgebaut werden. Dieser Beitrag hat das Ziel, das Be-wusstsein für den nötigen Wechsel von der Linear- zur Kreis-laufwirtschaft im Betonbau und den korrespondierenden Daten zu erhöhen und dem Planer einfache Grundsätze für den Ent-wurf, die Ausschreibung und Umsetzung mitzugeben, um jetzt schon einen wichtigen Beitrag zum verantwortungsvollen Um-gang mit immer knapper werdenden Ressourcen zu leisten.</abstract>

    <title language="eng">Learning the shape of female breasts: an open-access 3D statistical shape model of the female breast built from 110 breast scans</title>
    <abstract language="eng">We present the Regensburg Breast Shape Model (RBSM)—a 3D statistical shape model of the female breast built from 110 breast scans acquired in a standing position, and the first publicly available. Together with the model, a fully automated, pairwise surface registration pipeline used to establish dense correspondence among 3D breast scans is introduced. Our method is computationally efficient and requires only four landmarks to guide the registration process. A major challenge when modeling female breasts from surface-only 3D breast scans is the non-separability of breast and thorax. In order to weaken the strong coupling between breast and surrounding areas, we propose to minimize the variance outside the breast region as much as possible. To achieve this goal, a novel concept called breast probability masks (BPMs) is introduced. A BPM assigns probabilities to each point of a 3D breast scan, telling how likely it is that a particular point belongs to the breast area. During registration, we use BPMs to align the template to the target as accurately as possible inside the breast region and only roughly outside. This simple yet effective strategy significantly reduces the unwanted variance outside the breast region, leading to better statistical shape models in which breast shapes are quite well decoupled from the thorax. The RBSM is thus able to produce a variety of different breast shapes as independently as possible from the shape of the thorax. Our systematic experimental evaluation reveals a generalization ability of 0.17 mm and a specificity of 2.8 mm. To underline the expressiveness of the proposed model, we finally demonstrate in two showcase applications how the RBSM can be used for surgical outcome simulation and the prediction of a missing breast from the remaining one.
