Changes in the pore structure of the material need to be considered due to external influences and associated transport processes. The expansion behaviour of concrete and mortar during freeze-thaw attacks, combined with de-icing salt agents, is crucial for both internal and external damage. It is essential to determine and simulate the expansion behaviour of these materials in the laboratory, as well as detect the slow, long-term expansion in real structures. This study measures the expansion of mortar samples during freeze-thaw loading using a high-resolution hand-held 3D laser scanner. The specimens are prepared with fully or partially saturated pore structures through water storage or drying. During freeze-thaw experiments, the specimens are exposed to pure water or a 3\% sodium chloride solution (NaCl). Results show contraction during freezing and subsequent expansion during thawing. Both test solutions exhibit similar expansion behaviour, with differences primarily due to saturation levels. Further investigations are required to explore the changing expansion behaviour caused by increasing microcracking resulting from continuous freeze-thaw cycles. A numerical analysis using a 3D coupled hygro-thermo-mechanical (HTM) model is conducted to examine the freeze-thaw behaviour of the mortar. The model accurately represents the freezing deformation during the freeze-thaw cycle.}, language = {en} } @article{Linner, author = {Linner, Thomas}, title = {Special issue: Implementation-Oriented Construction Robotics}, series = {Construction Robotics}, volume = {7}, journal = {Construction Robotics}, publisher = {Springer Nature}, doi = {10.1007/s41693-023-00100-y}, pages = {1 -- 2}, language = {en} } @incollection{KrausObergriesser, author = {Kraus, Michael A. and Obergrießer, Mathias}, title = {Digitale Transformation im Bauwesen - Grundlagen zur k{\"u}nstlichen Intelligenz und deren Anwendung im Wohnungsbau}, series = {Mauerwerk-Kalender 2023: Instandsetzung, Erdbeben, Lehmbau}, volume = {48}, booktitle = {Mauerwerk-Kalender 2023: Instandsetzung, Erdbeben, Lehmbau}, editor = {Brehm, Detleff and Schermer, Eric}, publisher = {Ernst \& Sohn, a Wiley Brand}, address = {Berlin}, isbn = {978-3-433-03374-6}, doi = {10.1002/9783433611142.ch12}, pages = {275 -- 308}, abstract = {Dieser Beitrag f{\"u}hrt die im Mauerwerk-Kalender 2022 begonnene Reihe zur digitalen Transformation der Planung im Bauwesen weiter. The lumped parameter method (LPM) is used in several BPS programs and tools. It has the advantage of fast computing times and comparably good accuracy for thermal and energy loads. With the help of detailed FEM simulations, it is possible to further improve the degree of detail and accuracy while maintaining the high simulation speed. In this work, we compare time-dependent results for local temperatures in a generic reference room within a given periode of time. In a second step, the differences between the models with respect to various physical effects are analyzed and used to introduce additional equations into the LPM model in order to improve its accuracy. Thus, we discuss potentials for improvement for BPS and demonstrate a method of a practical implementation. The results show minor differences of less than 0.1 K for radiation and heat transfer, so their level of detail in BPS is appropriate. In these terms, no improvements were pursued within the work. However, the FEM simulation is capable of calculating the internal convective heat transfer and thermal bridges more accurately due to the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and the geometrically precise representation of the FEM model. Here, deviations of up to 1 K in room temperature (convective heat transfer) and up to 0.5 K in wall temperatures (thermal bridges) were pointed out. By improving the LPM with equations obtained from the FEM, these deviations can be reduced to less than 0.2 K, which is a considerable improvement in accuracy.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{NeidhartGoemmel, author = {Neidhart, Thomas and G{\"o}mmel, Roland}, title = {Spreizverformungen von Erdd{\"a}mmen auf S{\"a}ulen und Pf{\"a}hlen - Betrachtungen zur Spannungs- und Verformungskompatibilit{\"a}t}, series = {7. Thereby, state-of-the-art software solutions attempt to streamline the design and production processes accordingly. However, most digital workflows lack in terms of adequate sequential data preparation, agglomeration, and interfacing capabilities for consecutive design phases. These issues result in long, tedious correction loops, a wide range of software solutions and extensions to mitigate the issues. In addition, many digital workflows do not consider or integrate construction, production and machine relevant data holistically (respectively geometry and semantics). In this context, the production relevant data in from of human-centered work process data referring to digital human models (DHM), derived human abilities, safety and ergonomic criteria are often neglected. However, this is essential to interface the construction, human and machine relevant data in a holistic manner. This paper therefore proposes a DtP-workflow which is intended to solve some of the issues by interfacing relevant software solutions incorporating construction, production (including DHM and more) and machine relevant data in a holistic manner using a Building Information Modeling (BIM)-approach (based on the IFC schema). In concrete, various performance tests are used to classify existing or to approve new materials, to compare concrete compositions or to determine causes of damage in existing structures. The challenge of such test methods is to accelerate natural (very slow) mechanisms to determine the material performance precisely within a short time. However, the attack on the material must not be unrealistically intensive, but must represent reality, just in fast motion. The performance tests used to demonstrate the freeze-thaw resistance of concrete employ a 3\% NaCl solution, with literature data ranging from 1\% to 10\% showing that low concentrations can result in higher surface scaling. In this paper, mortar and concrete specimens are tested at 0, 1, 3, 6, and 9\% NaCl solution following the CDF procedure (DIN CEN/TS 12390-9:2017-05). The results are discussed against the background of the existing literature and show that the damage is critically dependent on the pore system and thus also on the effect of the micro-ice lens pump. They serve as input to engineering models to predict the durability of structures under real environmental conditions. The natural resistances have to be determined in time-consuming experiments, since the processes in nature are very slow. This is particularly important for new materials where long-term experience is not yet available. Thus, accelerated testing is required. Only that way new materials can be evaluated regarding their durability and subsequently be used in practical applications. For carbonation, a new R3 accelerated test method is presented in this contribution. An automated carbonation pressure chamber was developed. It consists of a pressure vessel, automated in such a way that it can apply gas overpressure of various intensities up to 8 bar to mortar and concrete samples. Simultaneously, it can control and regulate the ambient CO2 concentration from 0 to 99.5\% in a fully automated and continuously variable procedure. Experiments were carried out with varying combinations of gas overpressure at CO2 concentrations of 3 vol.-\% to achieve the most time-efficient carbonation of mortars and concretes. Automation and robotics have the potential to play a key role in the development of circular construction by increasing productivity, reducing waste, increasing safety, and mitigating labor shortages. Starting with a brief synopsis of the history of construction robotics and the concept of robot-oriented design, this article presents exemplary case studies of research projects and entrepreneurial activities in which the authors have participated that have contributed to the advancement of concrete construction. The activities of the authors have systematically led to spin-offs and start-ups, especially in recent years (e.g., CREDO Robotics GmbH, ARE23 GmbH, KEWAZO GmbH, ExlenTec Robotics GmbH, etc.), which shows that the use of construction robots is becoming an important part of the construction industry. With the use of automation and robotics in the built environment especially for concrete construction, current challenges such as the housing shortage can be addressed using the leading machinery and robot technology in Germany and other parts of the world. Since then, the spraying process has been significantly enhanced. However, during the last decades no major technical changes have been made. In this study the wet - mix shotcrete process including the dosing of accelerator was investigated. For this, we monitored the concrete and accelerator pressure with 5 sensors in the pumps and pipes, and analysed the accelerator distribution in the hardened shotcrete matrix. The recorded pressure fluctuations clearly indicated that the pumping of the concrete with a double-piston pump led to flow pulsations. The pressure along the accelerator pipes, controlled by a peristaltic pump, was not steady either. However, the accelerator flow pulsation had a higher frequency than that of the concrete flow. This misalignment led to changes in the accelerator to concrete ratio during the spraying process. The impact of these incongruent concrete and accelerator flows on the resulting hardened shotcrete was visually analysed with the use of 0.02 \% uranin as fluorescent tracer added to the accelerator. The tracer distribution showed that changes in the accelerator/concrete ratio led to the formation of 'accelerator layers', layers with higher accelerator concentrations in the hardened shotcrete. These layers show differences in chemistry, mineralogy and open porosity compared to the rest of the shotcrete matrix. The presence of accelerator enriched layers can have detrimental effects on the shotcrete properties, especially affecting the durability and mechanical performance. In addition, the degree of conservatism needs to be well balanced to avoid unnecessary investment of resources in replacement or retrofitting. This contribution considers the experience gained in recent years in parallel with some ongoing standardisation work in relation to Eurocodes and the next edition of the fib Model Code for new and existing concrete structures. The current state of the art of partial factors for the assessment of existing structures is explored and the differences are assessed based on a comparison between (i) the use of recommended fixed partial factors as provided in many national and international codes, (ii) adjusted (flexible) partial factors derived for the individual case under consideration, and (ii) reliability-based verification. In this study we investigate the effects of the spraying process, setting accelerator addition and mix design on the microstructure of real-scale dry- and wet-mix shotcrete and hand-mixed and sprayed accelerated pastes. A newly proposed deconvolution analysis of the pore size distributions, measured by mercury intrusion porosimetry, offers increased precision in determining the critical and median pore diameter parameters. In total >50 samples were analysed. Results show that the dry-mix shotcrete exhibits a shift towards coarser pore sizes (∼100-1 μm) than wet-mix shotcrete. Combinations of different supplementary cementitious materials are favourable for producing wet-mix shotcretes with refined pore structures.
