Deep rolling (DR) is particularly attractive since it is possible to generate, near the surface, deep compressive residual stresses and work hardened layers while retaining a relatively smooth surface finish. In the present investigation, the effect of DR on the low-cycle fatigue (LCF) and high-cycle fatigue (HCF) behavior of a Ti-6Al-4V alloy is examined, with particular emphasis on the thermal and mechanical stability of the residual stress states and the near-surface microstructures. Preliminary results on laser shock peened Ti-6Al-4V are also presented for comparison. Particular emphasis is devoted to the question of whether such surface treatments are effective for improving the fatigue properties at elevated temperatures up to ∼450 °C, i.e. at a homologous temperature of ∼0.4T/Tm (where Tm is the melting temperature). Based on cyclic deformation and stress/life (S/N) fatigue behavior, together with the X-ray diffraction and in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations of the microstructure, it was found that deep rolling can be quite effective in retarding the initiation and initial propagation of fatigue cracks in Ti-6Al-4V at such higher temperatures, despite the almost complete relaxation of the near-surface residual stresses. In the absence of such stresses, it is shown that the near-surface microstructures, which in Ti-6Al-4V consist of a layer of work hardened nanoscale grains, play a critical role in the enhancement of fatigue life by mechanical surface treatment.}, language = {en} } @article{NosterScholtes, author = {Noster, Ulf and Scholtes, Berthold}, title = {Bauschingerefekt und mechanische Zwillingsbildung der Magnesiumlegierung AZ31}, series = {H{\"a}rterei-technische Mitteilungen : HTM ; Zeitschrift f{\"u}r Werkstoffe, W{\"a}rmebehandlung, Fertigung}, volume = {58}, journal = {H{\"a}rterei-technische Mitteilungen : HTM ; Zeitschrift f{\"u}r Werkstoffe, W{\"a}rmebehandlung, Fertigung}, publisher = {Hanser}, pages = {322 -- 327}, language = {de} } @incollection{GebhardtLinner, author = {Gebhardt, H. and Linner, Thomas}, title = {DIN Arbeitsausschuss „Alternde Gesellschaften" : Einleitung}, series = {Arbeit und Altern : Eine Bilanz nach 20 Jahren Forschung und Praxis}, booktitle = {Arbeit und Altern : Eine Bilanz nach 20 Jahren Forschung und Praxis}, editor = {Richter, G{\"o}tz}, publisher = {Nomos}, isbn = {9783748909378}, doi = {10.5771/9783748909378-445}, pages = {445 -- 450}, language = {en} } @article{SuezerogluMelchiorsGassmannPalmie, author = {S{\"u}zeroglu-Melchiors, Sevim and Gassmann, Oliver and Palmi{\´e}, Maximilian}, title = {Friend or foe? The purpose of this paper is to advance this area of research by examining how the use of external patent attorneys influences the patent filing strategies of firms and what impact firms? level of experience with the exclusive use of in-house resources has on filing strategies. This study, thus, provides insights into the strategic dimension behind patent filing, a process which is affected by patent attorneys? work and decision-making processes.Design/methodology/approachThe econometric analysis is based on a patent database of 922,553 patents which is combined with an EPO patent database covering applications from 1990 to 2010. The authors test the hypotheses for this study using patent indicators addressing the impact of in-house firm experience vs the use of external patent attorneys on firm?s filing strategy.FindingsThis research finds empirical evidence that external patent attorneys? work has an effect on patent scope, international scope, and patenting speed. Moreover, it can be shown that external patent attorneys have a positive impact on most filing dimensions, such as patent scope, international scope and the Patent Cooperation Treaty option, whereas the level of in-house firm experience has a negative impact on most filing dimensions. This implies that external patent attorneys seem to pursue a ?maximization approach? while experienced firms seem to pursue a more differentiated approach to filing patents, for instance, drafting narrower and more focused patents.Practical implicationsThe study suggests that effective filing strategies require an integrated approach between diverse IP stakeholders. More particularly, filing strategies should be communicated and aligned between all actors, including external patent attorneys in order to achieve the targeted patenting output.Originality/valueThe current study develops a patent filing typology, which accounts for patent attorneys? decision options. The fierce rejection of 1st generation design methods in the early 1970s resulted in the postmodernist attitude of "no methods", and subsequently, after more than a decade, in the strong adoption of scientific methods, or "the" scientific method, for design research. The current situation regarding methodology is characterized by unproductive dualisms such as scientific methods vs. designerly methods, normative methods vs. descriptive methods, research vs. design. The potential of the early (1st generation) methods is neglected and the practical usefulness of design research is impeded. The suggestion for 2nd generation methods as discussed by Rittel and others has hardly been taken up in design. The "Communicating (by) Design" conference seeks to investigate developments in the sphere of research by (or through) design. While our main concern originates in architecture, other design disciplines are also of interest. The conference will investigate one of the central challenges for the designbased researcher, namely that of communicating. Communicating here may be understood as a set of processes, activities and events, which take place on different levels in designing - from individual, inner dialogues, through the issue of naming and defining terms to a more general problem of the representation of design knowledge - in order to articulate a set of intentions and values to an audience (which may be oneself ). Exploring aspects of defining, framing and sharing within design, the role of listening will also be raised, as the attitude that constitutes connectivity and allows conversation. The relationship between theory and practice, or "creative" and "critical" modes of inquiry, will also form an important theme of discussion, with a view to drawing the contours of new "hybrid" research practices. The order-disorder phase transition from a c(4 {\~A}— 2) to a(2 {\~A}— 1) of the bare Si(001) surface shows a transient decrease of the intensity of the c(4 {\~A}— 2) spots which recovers on a time scale of a few hundred picoseconds indicating the excitation of the phase transition. As an example we will present TLS results for the dynamics of step fluctuations on Si(001) [1]. In the first method, a Ga ' -focused ion beam in situ to the growth chamber is used to create local regions of enhanced Ga ' concentration and surface topography. It is shown that at low ion doses ({\^A}/10 14 cm (2), implanted Ga causes local nucleation of Ge clusters upon the implanted region. At higher doses (]/10 15 cm (2), a complex surface topography localizes nucleation of Ge clusters. This approach can be used to seed complex patterns of Ge clusters with diameters of tens of nanometers and positional accuracy of sub-100 nm. These configurations are kinetically limited structures that exist over a range of compositions, growth temperatures, and growth rates, but which are destabilized by strain relaxation (e.g. by the introduction of misfit dislocations) and by growth conditions which provide high adatom surface mobilities. Milk-run systems generally enable frequent deliveries in low lot sizes with short lead times and low inventories at the points of use. Thus, stable and reliable system operation is crucial to avoid delays and material shortages. In industrial practice, milk-run trains usually share resources, for example, loading areas and technology and use the same tracks, leading to dependencies between routes and possible traffic jams and blockages, which significantly affect cycle times and may lead to instabilities in the system. We present a simulation model to analyse in-plant milk-run systems with a focus on typical traffic situations. We describe its application to a large industrial case study in detail and derive recommendations for designing routes with low risk of delays.}, language = {en} } @article{KlankHagedornHolthausetal., author = {Klank, Michael and Hagedorn, Oliver and Holthaus, Carsten and Shamonin (Chamonine), Mikhail and D{\"o}tsch, Horst}, title = {Characterization and optimization of magnetic garnet films for magneto-optical visualization of magnetic field distributions}, series = {NDT \& E International}, volume = {36}, journal = {NDT \& E International}, number = {6}, publisher = {Elsevier}, doi = {10.1016/S0963-8695(03)00012-4}, pages = {375 -- 381}, abstract = {Rare-earth iron garnet films with in-plane anisotropy grown on (111)-oriented substrates can be used as magneto-optical indicator films for visualization of magnetic leakage fields in nondestructive evaluation. It is shown that the presence of a strong in-plane magnetic field allows one to extend the dynamic range of the out-of-plane field imposed by the uniaxial anisotropy field HA. Methods: Human umbilical veins (HUV) were frozen in Euro-Collins/1M DMSO at -1°C/min and stored in liquid nitrogen. Stress-strain relationships of fresh and thawed veins were determined in an uniaxial tension-testing rig. HUV endothelial cells (HUVEC) were seeded onto denuded HUV under static conditions and grown for 3d. Luminal surfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. Calcein-stained cells were seeded hyperconfluently to determine the cell retention capacity of fresh and cryopreserved veins. Results: The stress-strain relationships of HUV followed a biphasic pattern typical for natural vessels. Neither the failure stress (2.71±0.36 vs. 3.25±0.97 N, n=3) nor the displacement required to achieve failure (9.73±0.9 vs. 7.43±2.07mm, n=3) were altered by cryopreservation. The burst pressure was estimated as approx. 1000mm Hg within the limitations of the uniaxial model. HUVEC seeded onto denuded HUV formed patches (at 9E3 cells per cm2) or an almost confluent endothelium (at 3E4 cells per cm2) within three days. The capacity to retain seeded HUVEC of denuded HUV was not altered by cryopreservation (1.15±0.08E5 vs. 1.26±0.14E5 cells per cm2, n=6). Conclusions: The burst pressure of HUV seems to be sufficiently high for the human arterial circulation and is not altered by cryopreservation. HUVEC can establish a confluent endothelium on denuded HUV. Therefore HUV appears to be a suitable storable scaffold for vascular tissue engineering.}, subject = {Nabelvene}, language = {en} } @article{SchuezDraegerRichteretal., author = {Sch{\"u}z, B. and Dr{\"a}ger, D. and Richter, Stefanie and Kummer, K. and Kuhlmey, Adelheid and Tesch-R{\"o}mer, C.}, title = {Autonomie trotz Multimorbidit{\"a}t im Alter - Der Berliner Forschungsverbund AMA}, series = {Zeitschrift fur Gerontologie und Geriatrie}, volume = {44}, journal = {Zeitschrift fur Gerontologie und Geriatrie}, number = {Suppl.
