We differentiate the determinants of this post-adoption decision for IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS. In contrast to traditional universities, UAS are supposed to educate their students based on scientific methods but with a high degree of application orientation (Wissenschaftsrat, 2010). The goal was to generate highly employable graduates. Since then the number of UAS in Germany has risen to 216 in 2018/2019 (Statistisches Bundesamt, 2019). ~45\% of all German students start their tertiary education at a UAS (Autorengruppe Bildungsberichterstattung, 2018). UAS graduates are well perceived by domestic employers, enjoy high recruiting rates and attractive salary levels. The educational model has proven so successful that its approach and underlying philosophy has been replicated under terms such as "cooperative education" or "applied learning" in a vast number of different countries and educational systems around the globe (Altbach, Reisberg, \& Rumbley, 2011). This talk critically describes the key aspects that constitute German UAS' approaches to industry-oriented applied learning. The findings are relevant for academics, policy makers, and industry representatives to generate ideas on how to improve study curricula, policies, or collaboration between academia and industry. Method The approach taken consists of a descriptive and structured account of the key aspects that constitute the study curricula of a UAS from an applied learning perspective. By building on their own experiences as teaching professors and part of a German UAS' managerial team, the research method taken resembles an action research-oriented approach. Key Findings German UAS have numerous application-oriented learning elements in their curricula. These elements are performed inside the university like lab courses but many of these learning elements are carried out in cooperation with industry. Bachelor programs span over seven semesters. Fundamentals are taught in the first two semesters and from the third semester on, more and more application-oriented lectures and labs become part of the curricula. In the fifth semester, a mandatory internship is integrated in the study program. This internship is carried out either at companies in Germany or abroad. It is the goal of the internship that the students gain first practical experience in a real work environment. The work tasks in internship should be similar to the later professional demands and should contain a project. The students themselves are responsible for finding an appropriate job and organize the administrative aspects around the internship, thus their self-organization skills are advanced. The UAS teaching staff supervises the internships from an academic perspective. This mandatory internship has numerous advantages: students experience real industry environment and they build contacts to later employers thus forming a potential pathway to future employment. Bachelor and master courses each finish with thesis work. The majority of theses is carried out in companies under university supervision. This is a second chance for the students to accomplish a company project, to gain practical experience and to get in touch with potential employers. In addition to undergraduate and postgraduate education, German UAS do a lot of applied research together with companies. This applied research can also be the basis for the work of Ph.D students. Industry representatives are also involved when designing new study programs as consultants and give advice for accreditation and reaccreditation of programs. Associated with this, the consideration of energy-related emissions is becoming an additional point of interest for decisionmakers in both, economic and ecological terms. Based on an extensive systematic literature review, the study at hand presents a multicriterial scheduling problem that addresses tardiness, energy consumption and energy-related emissions in production scheduling. A model is introduced that takes into account job release dates, multiple machine states, a power demand threshold as well as time-varying emission conversion factors. Multiple case studies are analysed and the effects of different technological implementations as energy onsite generation and energy storage systems are evaluated. Furthermore, several price mechanisms regarding energy procurement and emission trading are discussed. Moreover, by coupling the optimization model to a discrete event simulation model, we are able to compare the model results to real case scenarios. First computational experiments have demonstrated that the model and its extensions can effectively reduce the environmental impact associated with production while simultaneously considering corresponding economic objectives. Even if only specific companies were originally affected, shortages and delays rippled along the supply network. The established approach to deal with disruptions is to utilize safety stock and capacity to compensate for fluctuations in uncertain quantities like customer demand. This approach is tried and tested for small fluctuations. To address larger disruptions, like the above given, very high safety stock and capacity would be needed, which would lead to unnecessarily high costs. Resilience has often been viewed as an expensive capability that drives costs. Recent studies however advocate for the development of lean resilience concepts, creating new capabilities, which enable resilience and can deal with large fluctuations, reimagining resilience from the perspectives of efficiency and value creation. This contribution identifies gaps in current research and establishes structural deficits of approaches discussed in the literature regarding supply chains. Firstly, the need for rigorous, quantitative definitions of resilience and relevant disruptions is justified. Then, a stochastic model for aggregate production planning that includes capabilities to compensate for such large fluctuations along several dimensions is proposed. Lastly, this model is then applied to a case study pertaining to a realistic supply chain under the risk of large scale disruptions and the results of this approach are evaluated.}, language = {en} } @misc{PaetzelSchlesingerPricopetal., author = {Paetzel, Maike and Schlesinger, Philipp and Pricop, Mircea and Comaneci, Radu and Baumann, Timo and Menzel, Wolfgang}, title = {Inkrementelle und zustandsbasierte Verarbeitung in einem hybriden Sprachdialogsystem}, language = {en} } @misc{AltenbuchnerHaugMohretal., author = {Altenbuchner, Amelie and Haug, Sonja and Mohr, Christa and Scorna, Ulrike and Weber, Karsten}, title = {The impact of nurse advisors and online advice services on treatment adherence in multiple sclerosis (MS)}, series = {7th Joint European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis - Americas Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS-ACTRIMS), 25.-27.10.2017, Paris}, journal = {7th Joint European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis - Americas Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS-ACTRIMS), 25.-27.10.2017, Paris}, language = {en} } @misc{MohrAltenbuchnerHaugetal., author = {Mohr, Christa and Altenbuchner, Amelie and Haug, Sonja and Scorna, Ulrike and Weber, Karsten}, title = {Der Einfluss von pflegerischer Fachberatung und Onlineberatung auf die Therapietreue (Compliance) bei der Behandlung von Multipler Sklerose (MS)}, series = {Forschungswelten 2018. 9. Such restrictions reduce the set of feasible schedules even more than the no-buffer restrictions discussed in the literature in the case of limited storage. Since this scheduling problem is integrated in the usual hierarchical planning, the tardiness is minimised. Due to the high number of jobs as well as the goal of a simple algorithm, scheduling is always done by priority rules at the company site. The standard approach of using the net processing time causes poor results. A simulation of the processing time is suggested. In addition, several very relevant priority rules from the literature are modified by this simulated processing and significantly better results are obtained. A quick reverse engineering of the software will show that no cryptographic authentication is used for the OTA updates, and therefore a pirate GSM BTS can be used to obtain remote code execution. Thereby, it has become possible to apply advanced computer graphics technology even in low-cost embedded appliances, such as car instruments. Yet, to come up with an efficient implementation, developers have to put enormous efforts into hardware/problem-specific tailoring, fine-tuning, and domain exploration, which requires profound expert knowledge. If a good solution has been found, there is a high probability that it does not work as well with other architectures or even the next hardware generation. Generative DSL-based approaches could mitigate these efforts and provide for an efficient exploration of algorithmic variants and hardware-specific tuning ideas. However, in vertically organized industries, such as automotive, suppliers are reluctant to introduce these techniques as they fear loss of control, high introduction costs, and additional constraints imposed by the OEM with respect to software and tool-chain certification. Moreover, suppliers do not want to share their generic solutions with the OEM, but only concrete instances. To this end, we propose a light-weight and incremental approach for meta programming of graphics applications. Our approach relies on an existing formulation of C-like languages that is amenable to meta programming, which we extend to become a lightweight language to combine algorithmic features. While their use easily maps to rasterization-based frameworks, they pose a significant challenge for ray tracing environments. This is due to the fact that incoherent access patterns require storing or caching fully tessellated and displaced meshes for efficient intersection computations. In this paper we use a two-tier hierarchy built on a scene's patches. It relies on compressed and quantized bounding volumes on the second tier to reduce the size of the BVH itself. Based on this acceleration structure, we propose a quantized, compact approximation for leaf nodes while being faithful to the underlying patch-geometry. We build on recent advances and present a system that shows competitive performance regarding run-time speed, which is close to full-resolution pre-tessellation methods as well as to previous compression approaches. Despite its success in many applications there is no satisfactory convergence analysis: only local convergence can be shown for batch mode under some restrictions on the hyperparameters, counterexamples exist for incremental mode. Recent results show that for simple quadratic objective functions limit cycles of period 2 exist in batch mode, but only for atypical hyperparameters, and only for the algorithm without bias correction. We extend the convergence analysis to all choices of the hyperparameters for quadratic functions. This finally answers the question of convergence for Adam in batch mode to the negative. We analyze the stability of these limit cycles and relate our analysis to other results where approximate convergence was shown, but under the additional assumption of bounded gradients which does not apply to quadratic functions. Against this background, this paper analyzes the complex nature of cultural distance and its multi-faceted effect on ITO success. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH This paper builds upon extant literature on culture on the national, organizational and team level, conceptualizes its effect on relationship quality and ITO success, and hypothesizes a model on potential moderators and management techniques to offset culture-induced challenges. It then evaluates and refines the model by means of an interpretive qualitative research design for an in-depth single-case study of ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE (P7S1), a leading European media company that reconfigured its IT sourcing model three times in 10 years. FINDINGS The results from interviews with top managers from client and provider organizations represent one of the first integrated views on the critical importance of cultural compatibility on multiple levels, provide manifold examples for its complex effect on ITO success, as well as moderators and potential management techniques to promote ITO success. RESEARCH LIMITATIONS/IMPLICATIONS This paper contributes relevant empirical insights to the growing body of literature on culture and its underestimated role in ITO success. It builds on tentative theory that is confirmed and refined. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS The paper helps in substantiating the complex and intangible nature of culture and demonstrates means for its effective management. Query optimisation, which concerns problems that typically need to explore large search spaces, seems like an ideal match for the known quantum algorithms. We present the first quantum implementation of join ordering, which is one of the most investigated and fundamental query optimisation problems, based on a reformulation to quadratic binary unconstrained optimisation problems. We empirically characterise our method on two state-of-the-art approaches (gate-based quantum computing and quantum annealing), and identify speed-ups compared to the best know classical join ordering approaches for input sizes that can be processed with current quantum annealers. However, we also confirm that limits of early-stage technology are quickly reached. Current QPUs are classified as noisy, intermediate scale quantum computers (NISQ), and are restricted by a variety of limitations that reduce their capabilities as compared to ideal future quantum computers, which prevents us from scaling up problem dimensions and reaching practical utility. To overcome these challenges, our formulation accounts for specific QPU properties and limitations, and allows us to trade between achievable solution quality and possible problem size. In contrast to all prior work on quantum computing for query optimisation and database-related challenges, we go beyond currently available QPUs, and explicitly target the scalability limitations: Using insights gained from numerical simulations and our experimental analysis, we identify key criteria for co-designing QPUs to improve their usefulness for join ordering, and show how even relatively minor physical architectural improvements can result in substantial enhancements. Finally, we outline a path towards practical utility of custom-designed QPUs.}, language = {en} } @article{KaessStrahringerWestner, author = {K{\"a}ss, Sebastian and Strahringer, Susanne and Westner, Markus}, title = {Practitioners' Perceptions on the Adoption of Low Code Development Platforms}, series = {IEEE Access}, journal = {IEEE Access}, publisher = {IEEE}, issn = {2169-3536}, doi = {10.1109/ACCESS.2023.3258539}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bvb:898-opus4-59170}, pages = {30}, abstract = {Organizations are under increasing pressure to develop applications within budget and time at high quality. Therefore, multiple organizations adopt Low Code Development Platforms (LCDP) to develop applications faster and cheaper compared to traditional application development. However, current research on LCDP adoption lacks empirical grounding as well as a deeper understanding of the importance of adoption drivers and inhibitors. We conducted semi-structured interviews and a Delphi study with seventeen experts to address these gaps. As a result, we identified twelve drivers and nineteen inhibitors for adopting LCDPs. We show that the experts have a consensus on the most and the least important drivers and inhibitors for LCDP adoption. Yet, the ranking of the drivers and inhibitors between the most and least important is highly context dependent. For some drivers and inhibitors, the experts' ranking is similar to academic literature, whereas, for others, it differs. In conclusion, the study at hand empirically validates drivers and inhibitors for LCDP adoption, adds six new drivers and six new inhibitors to the body of knowledge, and analyses the importance of these factors.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{BaumannPaetzelSchlesingeretal., author = {Baumann, Timo and Paetzel, Maike and Schlesinger, Philipp and Menzel, Wolfgang}, title = {Using Affordances to Shape the Interaction in a Hybrid Spoken Dialogue System}, series = {Elektronische Sprachsignalverarbeitung 2013 : Tagungsband der 24. For example, the act of asking a question affords to the recipient thepossibility of answering. In the system we present, the observable act of maneuveringaffords the possibility of controlling a motion. Our system thus uses the affordanceprinciple to shape the interaction: to trigger the usage of instructions that are easyto understand and process, the system gives immediate visual feedback to afforduser commands that can then be reacted upon. This tightening of the interactionloop requires an incremental processing paradigm to allow fast reactions and to beable to alter ongoing system actions. Our system is a hybrid of incremental andnon-incremental processing components, combining conventional, state graph-basedprocessing, which has the advantage of widely available toolkits and well-understooddialog management, with incremental dialog processing which allows for the tightfeedback loop that provides for quick reactions. We tested our approach in a smalluser study and found that users used simpler and setting-independent commandsmore often and were more efficient when faced with the affordance-based version ofour system.}, language = {en} } @book{Baumann, author = {Baumann, Timo}, title = {Incremental Spoken Dialogue Processing: Architecture and Lower-level Components}, publisher = {Bielefeld University}, isbn = {9783848200221}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:hbz:361-25819101}, pages = {176}, language = {en} } @misc{Grossmann, type = {Master Thesis}, author = {Großmann, Christoph}, title = {Extending SQL for Machine Learning}, address = {Regensburg}, doi = {10.35096/othr/pub-6059}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bvb:898-opus4-60595}, school = {Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Regensburg}, pages = {92}, abstract = {As machine learning becomes ever more popular, the question of how to enable it on ever more platforms becomes more important. This thesis explores the extension of SQL and extension databases for machine learning. For this purpose, a framework for extending the Exasol database for machine learning is created. This framework uses the existing support for scripting languages and the in-database file system of the Exasol database to integrate existing machine-learning libraries into SQL. Currently, only Scikit-Learn was integrated. The focuses of our framework are simplicity, usability, smooth integration in SQL, and expressive power, while runtime efficiency and speed are only secondary focuses. Further benefits of the framework are reduction of communication overhead, increased data security, simplification of data synchronization, and the usage of core database strengths. Compared to other in-database machine learning approaches, Apache MADlib and Oracle Machine Learning, our framework most likely has inferior speed and efficiency, while having the advantage of using well-integrated and tested libraries. This thesis also provides an overview of related work on extending SQL and databases for machine learning. Furthermore, future directions for our framework are discussed.
