Up to now these three planning stages are executed isolated and without the required data exchange between each other. This separation leads to time-consuming and expensive manual re-input of geometric and semantic data. Currently, roads are designed using the traditional approach which is based on various 2D drawings. The current design process focuses on the roadway itself, additional geotechnical conditions such as the slope angle of the dam or the position of a retaining wall are not considered. To solve these problems, a new parametric and 3D-model based approach has been developed in the research project ForBAU — The virtual construction site. This new approach is based on the traditional 2D infrastructure planning process, but includes a new parameterized 3D modeling concept. Different open data formats such as LandXML and GroundXML allow data integration with both, a parametric Computer Aided Design (CAD) system and a geotechnical engineering software. An automatic update function ensures data flow without loss of information. Usage of this new approach will accelerate the infrastructure design and provide a parametric 3D-model approach to close the gap between the geotechnical and the infrastructure planning process. This paper provides detailed information about this new integration concept and gives an overview on the various implementation steps.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{JiBorrmannObergriesser, author = {Ji, Yang and Borrmann, Andr{\´e} and Obergrießer, Mathias}, title = {Toward the exchange of parametric bridge models using a neutral data format}, series = {Computing in Civil Engineering 2011, Proceedings of the 2011 ASCE International workshop ORKSHOP on Computing in civil engineering, June 19-22, 2011, Miami, Florida}, booktitle = {Computing in Civil Engineering 2011, Proceedings of the 2011 ASCE International workshop ORKSHOP on Computing in civil engineering, June 19-22, 2011, Miami, Florida}, publisher = {American Society of Civil Engineers ASCE}, address = {Reston, VA}, doi = {10.1061/41182(416)65}, pages = {528 -- 535}, abstract = {While there are mature data models for exchanging semantically rich building models, no means for exchanging bridge models using a neutral data format exist so far. A major challenge lies in the fact that a bridge's geometry is often described in parametric terms, using geometric constraints and mathematical expressions to describe dependencies between different dimensions. Since the current draft of IFC-Bridge does not provide a parametric geometric description, this paper presents a possible extension and describes in detail the object-oriented data model proposed to capture parametric design including geometric and dimensional constraints. The feasibility of the concept has been verified by actually implementing the exchange of parametric models between two different computer-aided design (CAD) applications.}, language = {en} } @article{SchorrBorrmannObergriesseretal., author = {Schorr, Markus and Borrmann, Andr{\´e} and Obergrießer, Mathias and Ji, Yang and G{\"u}nthner, Willibald A. and Rank, Ernst}, title = {Employing product data management systems in civil engineering projects: Functionality analysis and assessment}, series = {Journal of soft computing in civil engineering : SCCE}, volume = {25}, journal = {Journal of soft computing in civil engineering : SCCE}, number = {6}, publisher = {ASCE}, address = {New York, NY}, pages = {430 -- 441}, abstract = {Product Data Management (PDM) systems are well established in the manufacturing industry. Here, they form the standard solution for the central storage of all data relating to a product and the processes involved in its manufacture. Particularly the consistent management of CAD models, including sophisticated versioning techniques and access rights management as well as the integrated workflow management are attractive features for using PDM systems also for civil engineering projects. This paper investigates the technical concepts behind PDM systems and compares their suitability as a data management solution in civil engineering projects with that of Document Management Systems and Product Model Servers. Alongside a comparative study of the major PDM systems available on the market, we also present a case study involving a PDM system that has been employed for a concrete civil engineering project.}, language = {en} }
