@misc{WestnerFuhrmann, author = {Westner, Markus and Fuhrmann, Thomas}, title = {Applied Learning through Industry Collaboration}, series = {Applied Learning Conference, 2020, Singapur}, journal = {Applied Learning Conference, 2020, Singapur}, abstract = {Purpose In 1969, Germany founded a new type of tertiary education institution, the so-called "Universities of Applied Sciences" (UAS). In contrast to traditional universities, UAS are supposed to educate their students based on scientific methods but with a high degree of application orientation (Wissenschaftsrat, 2010). The goal was to generate highly employable graduates. Since then the number of UAS in Germany has risen to 216 in 2018/2019 (Statistisches Bundesamt, 2019). ~45\% of all German students start their tertiary education at a UAS (Autorengruppe Bildungsberichterstattung, 2018). UAS graduates are well perceived by domestic employers, enjoy high recruiting rates and attractive salary levels. The educational model has proven so successful that its approach and underlying philosophy has been replicated under terms such as "cooperative education" or "applied learning" in a vast number of different countries and educational systems around the globe (Altbach, Reisberg, \& Rumbley, 2011). This talk critically describes the key aspects that constitute German UAS' approaches to industry-oriented applied learning. The findings are relevant for academics, policy makers, and industry representatives to generate ideas on how to improve study curricula, policies, or collaboration between academia and industry. Method The approach taken consists of a descriptive and structured account of the key aspects that constitute the study curricula of a UAS from an applied learning perspective. By building on their own experiences as teaching professors and part of a German UAS' managerial team, the research method taken resembles an action research-oriented approach. Key Findings German UAS have numerous application-oriented learning elements in their curricula. These elements are performed inside the university like lab courses but many of these learning elements are carried out in cooperation with industry. Bachelor programs span over seven semesters. Fundamentals are taught in the first two semesters and from the third semester on, more and more application-oriented lectures and labs become part of the curricula. In the fifth semester, a mandatory internship is integrated in the study program. This internship is carried out either at companies in Germany or abroad. It is the goal of the internship that the students gain first practical experience in a real work environment. The work tasks in internship should be similar to the later professional demands and should contain a project. The students themselves are responsible for finding an appropriate job and organize the administrative aspects around the internship, thus their self-organization skills are advanced. The UAS teaching staff supervises the internships from an academic perspective. This mandatory internship has numerous advantages: students experience real industry environment and they build contacts to later employers thus forming a potential pathway to future employment. Bachelor and master courses each finish with thesis work. The majority of theses is carried out in companies under university supervision. This is a second chance for the students to accomplish a company project, to gain practical experience and to get in touch with potential employers. In addition to undergraduate and postgraduate education, German UAS do a lot of applied research together with companies. This applied research can also be the basis for the work of Ph.D students. Industry representatives are also involved when designing new study programs as consultants and give advice for accreditation and reaccreditation of programs. All these activities of German universities of applied sciences lead to a high practical relevance of education programs and to a high degree of employability of UAS graduates.}, language = {en} } @misc{SchwanzerDietrichGadereretal., author = {Schwanzer, Peter and Dietrich, Markus and Gaderer, Matthias and Rabl, Hans-Peter}, title = {Detektion unterschiedlicher Medien in Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF) mit Hilfe eines Radio-Frequenz (RF-) Sensors}, series = {Bayerische Wissenschaftsforum - BayWISS 2020}, journal = {Bayerische Wissenschaftsforum - BayWISS 2020}, language = {de} } @misc{RennerPozzobonMottok, author = {Renner, Sebastian and Pozzobon, Enrico and Mottok, J{\"u}rgen}, title = {Current and Future Efforts in Benchmarking NIST LWC Ciphers}, series = {4th Lightweight Cryptography Workshop 2020 at NIST, Gaithersburg, USA}, journal = {4th Lightweight Cryptography Workshop 2020 at NIST, Gaithersburg, USA}, language = {en} } @misc{OetjenRiegerRabletal., author = {Oetjen, Arne and Rieger, Anna and Rabl, Hans-Peter and van de Par, Steven}, title = {The role of dissonance in the sound quality perception for electric vehicles}, series = {The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America}, volume = {148}, journal = {The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America}, number = {4}, publisher = {Acoustical Society of America}, doi = {10.1121/1.5147356}, abstract = {Tonal components can be regarded as one of the most relevant components for interior sound quality of electric vehicles, especially at low speeds. Sources for these tones are for example the vehicles' drivetrains but also other technical components. Depending on the driving conditions, due to the interaction of various dominant sources, audible tone complexes can occur. Similar to musical intervals, the different frequency ratios within these complexes can result in consonant or dissonant sensations. The strength of this sensation does not only depend on the frequency relation of the tones but also on their relative levels. In this study, different musical intervals were subjectively rated in terms of their specific consonant or dissonant character. Using an adaptive procedure, sound pairs, each consisting of a two-tone signal, where adjusted to equal dissonance by varying the level of the second tone of one of the two-tone signals. Using the same paradigm, also pairs of equal vehicle sound quality were obtained. With these results, it is possible to quantify dissonance, and theinfluence of dissonance on sound quality expressed in terms of level differences of two-tone signals. These results can help to make the concept of dissonance more useful for sound-engineering applications.}, language = {en} } @misc{NeidhartHallasHinrichsenetal., author = {Neidhart, Thomas and Hallas, Martin and Hinrichsen, Volker and Tenzer, Michael and Neumann, Claus}, title = {Langzeitversuche an einer direkt erdverlegten DC GIL: Bodenmechanische und thermische Wechselwirkungen bei Bettung in zeitweise fließf{\"a}higem Verf{\"u}llbaustoff}, series = {22. Designing an antenna array is a challenging task, where simulation can help to reduce the design complexity. Simulating a complete array can be computational expensive, therefore designing the array is often broken in several task. The first goal is to design and optimize a single antenna element followed by an optimization of this antenna element while considering the vicinity of further equal elements. A unit cell approach is a feasible and easy way to accomplish this task. This approach already considers parameter such as active element pattern and radiation pattern angles. As soon as the unit cell optimization, emulating an infinite array, is finished, the real array with a finite size is simulated, especially considering edge elements and parameters such as excitation patterns or active and passive elements. Due to the high simulation effort at this stage optimization should be kept to a minimum and high performance computing might be required. Finally, a feeding network and different excitations for various beam patterns can be investigated using combined methods to reduce the simulation effort.}, subject = {Antennengruppe}, language = {en} } @misc{Herrmann, author = {Herrmann, Frank}, title = {The Use of Simulation for Manufacturing Applications}, series = {Proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Advances in System Simulation, SIMUL 2020, 18.-22.10.2020 in Porto, Portugal}, journal = {Proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Advances in System Simulation, SIMUL 2020, 18.-22.10.2020 in Porto, Portugal}, publisher = {IARIA XPS Press}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bvb:898-opus4-24899}, abstract = {This paper summarizes six presentations in a session of the track "Use of Simulation for Manufacturing Applications". Due to space restrictions, there is no buffer between the stations. The production line at Fiedler Andritz, Regensburg in Germany, can be seen as an example of such a problem class. Such restrictions reduce the set of feasible schedules even more than the no-buffer restrictions discussed in the literature in the case of limited storage. Since this scheduling problem is integrated in the usual hierarchical planning, the tardiness is minimised. Due to the high number of jobs as well as the goal of a simple algorithm, scheduling is always done by priority rules at the company site. The standard approach of using the net processing time causes poor results. A simulation of the processing time is suggested. In addition, several very relevant priority rules from the literature are modified by this simulated processing and significantly better results are obtained. This paper discusses a novel metric for indicating expertise in visual information processing. Named the Gaze Relational Index (GRI), this metric is defined as the ratio of mean fixation duration to fixation count. Data from two eye-tracking studies of professional vision and visual expertise in using 3D dynamic medical visualizations are presented as cases to illustrate the suitability and additional benefits of the GRI. Calculated values of the GRI were higher for novices than for experts, and higher in non-representative, semi-familiar / unfamiliar task conditions than in domain-representative familiar tasks. These differences in GRI suggest that, compared to novices, experts engaged in more knowledge-driven, top-down processing that was characterized by quick, exploratory visual search.
