ECMO is an increasingly used treatment for patients with severe respiratory failure or cardiac arrest [1]. For both, evaluation of therapeutic decisions and fundamental research on patient specific intra-device clotting phenomena, the direct visualization and analysis of clot formation in combination with a detailed flow field correlation is highly desirable and therefore an intensively followed research topic. Modelling blood flow and shear induced coagulation in MLs is challenging. The relevant geometry of oxygenator fibers and chaining threads is complex and spans several length scales. In relevant scales and regimes, blood shows several significant non-Newtonian effects. Viscosity impacts shear rate, which is important in several coagulation mechanisms. Additionally, coagulation processes are influencing fluid properties and geometry significantly. Existing approaches of previous research work are only able to consider some, but not all relevant effects and geometrical details. Due to the enormous size of the discretized geometries, highly detailed viscosity and coagulations models are not applicable. Our goal is to develop a model for combined viscosity and coagulation properties of blood flow in MLs. In our work, we compare the influence of different levels of detail of the ML geometry as well as the influence of considering realistic blood flow behavior (viscosity change by considering the local hematocrit distribution within the F{\aa}hraeus-Lindqvist-Effect) on the resulting flow field in relevant subsections of a ML. Understanding the underlying fluid mechanical processes and their influencing factors would enable the development of drugs to suppress the generation of infectious aerosol. In the proposed work, we focus on the shear-induced mechanism of aerosol generation, which is supposed to occur mostly in the larger airways during coughing. In this process, high air velocities trigger Kelvin-Helmholtz waves in the mucus film, which lines the air vessels. Through a series of instabilities, particles detach from the crest of these waves. In the proposed work, we investigate the process of shear-induced aerosol generation in idealized experiments where we vary the air-flow characteristics and the properties of the mucus fluid. Our central aim here is to deduct an empirical model of the quantity and size distribution of generated particles depending on the mucus rheology and the local shear flow. Further, we observe the wave topology to better understand the coupling between the air flow and the waves. In our experimental setup, we measure the quantity of created particles and the emerging waves simultaneously. To ensure controllable conditions, we simplify the complex flow conditions in the airways. We use a rectangular channel with the bottom wall covered in a mucus mimetic. The mucus mimetic fluid is a synthetic hydrogel developed to recreate the viscoelastic properties and low surface tensions of the mucus. Filtered pressurized air is guided through the channel to trigger shear-induced aerosol generation. After passing the mucus mimetic, the air enters into a collection chamber from where particles are sampled continuously by an aerosol spectrometer. To measure wave topology, we use planar laser induced fluorescence. For this, we stain the mucus mimetic with fluorescent dyes and illuminate a line on the surface of the fluid film with a 532 nm laser. A high-resolution camera captures the resulting fluorescent glow of the mucus mimetic. Figure 1 presents exemplary wave topology results from the experiments, employing varying air flow volume rates, mucus mimetic gel properties, and different configurations of the laser and camera. The resulting wave topologies exhibit significant variation. For the conference, we will conduct parameter studies of the particle quantities and wave topology while varying the mucus mimetic properties and the flow rate of the air. The water content determines the consistency of the soil, the shear strength, and thus also the skin friction of geotechnical deep foundations. Furthermore, the settlement behavior of structures founded on cohesive soils is significantly influenced by the pore water. Given these water content-dependent properties, it is frequently of interest to influence the water content in cohesive soil. Due to the small capillary diameters and the surface charge of the silicate layers in cohesive soils, it is possible to effectively influence the pore water of the soil using electric fields. As early as the mid-20th century, attempts were made to initiate consolidation processes using electric currents (Casagrande, 1949). Building on this, Christian Veder, the namesake of this colloquium, and his colleague Hilbert presented various approaches in the 1970s regarding the electrokinetic processes involved in landslides and their utilization for stabilization. Due to electroosmosis in the capillaries of cohesive soils or soils with a cohesive component, the direct current electric field leads to water migration from the anode to the cathode. The water content at the anode therefore decreases, while it increases at the cathode. In this way, the water content-dependent consistency and shear strength of the soil can be specifically altered (Veder \& Hilbert, 1979). Due to the strong dependence of the fine-grained minerals on the available ions, the soil is influenced by an electric field not only in its state but also in its soil physics. The investigations presented here aimed to deepen these insights and expand the range of applications of electric currents in soil. The focus was on electrokinetic pore water manipulation and its influence on the mechanical interaction (adhesion and tensile strength) between cohesive soils and solid surfaces.}, language = {de} } @misc{SpirklNeidhart, author = {Spirkl, Florian and Neidhart, Thomas}, title = {Environmental advantages and recycling potential of temporarily flowable backfill as bedding material for district heating pipes}, series = {19th International Symposium on District Heating and Cooling, 07-10. Typically, District Heating Pipes (DHP) are embedded in coarse sand with specific grain size distributions and soil properties. An alternative to this are the temporarily flowable backfill materials (TFB). These are a mixture of aggregate, binder (e.g. cement), water and, if necessary, additional supplements, e.g. bentonite. TFB can be mixed-on-site or mixed-in-plant, depending on the boundary conditions. Where possible, the excavated soil is used as aggregate. This paper will look at possible environmental advantages as part of a life cycle assessment, especially regarding the carbon footprint, if TFB is used in place of typical sand bedding. A total of 7 environmental impact factors are compared as part of a case study. As there are a multitude of variables with widely ranging impact for the calculation of the environmental impact, an additional sensitivity study was performed, to determine key parameters for the carbon footprint. In a multitude of cases, it can be shown that TFB has a smaller carbon footprint compared to sand bedding, as the number of transports can be greatly reduced and the TFB doesn't need to be compacted. These factors predominate the need of cement, which is negatively connoted regarding the environmental impact. If the excavated soil is not eligible as an aggregate for TFB, an alternative base component is necessary. Typically, mixed-in-plant-produced TFB uses sand, as the properties of TFB based on recycling materials has hardly been investigated. In order to conserve natural resources and at the same time recycle construction waste, investigations were carried out into the production and strength behavior of TFB made from different construction materials. The main goal was to mix TFB which is easily re-excavated, as per German guideline H ZFSV. This was achieved with every recycling material, but with varying amount of cement necessary. As part of a long-term study, a delayed increase in strength depending on the source material could be shown. This paper explores how ChatGPT-4 can be used to support the development of future scenarios using the Cone of Plausibility method. The most recent version ChatGPT 4.0 differs from its predecessors in that it can now access real-time data to generate its responses. This makes it an attractive tool for intelligence analysts, who are faced with the permanent challenge of having to sift through large amounts of data whilst also providing actionable products in a timely manner. Previous versions of ChatGPT were prone to errors such as making up information. But what if, using the right prompts, version 4.0 could become a useful sparring partner for developing future scenarios? In this study, we will ask ChatGPT 4.0 to generate sets of plausible future scenarios for "Russia 2035+" based on previously specified key drivers and assumptions. The LLM's potential for error is reduced because it is not working with hypotheses that it has generated itself. This could turn ChatGPT into a quick-thinking sparring partner for imagining varieties of future scenarios, supporting out-of-the box thinking and further minimising cognitive biases. To evaluate the reliability and accuracy of the results generated by ChatGPT, we will use the VV\&A concept developed by the US Department of Defence. According to this concept, credibility in an intelligence product is rooted in the verification, validation and accreditation of its analysis. This process is routinely followed by every intelligence analyst. We will have found out to which extent and under which circumstances ChatGPT 4.0 can credibly support the development of future scenarios.}, language = {en} } @misc{NeidhartCaicedoBergforth, author = {Neidhart, Thomas and Caicedo, Jos{\´e} and Bergforth, Axel}, title = {Baugrundverbesserung mittels Kunstharzs{\"a}ulen zur Nachgr{\"u}ndung sich setzender Geb{\"a}ude}, series = {Vortr{\"a}ge der 38. Ensuring manufacturability throughout geometrical changes adds to the complexity, leading engineers to rely on experience-driven iterative design changes that compromise requirements and lack reproducibility. Finite Element (FE) simulation models are employed to ensure manufacturability, albeit at the expense of high computational costs and delays in part development. To improve efficiency, a Machine learning (ML)-centered approach was proposed to ensure manufacturability. However, the limited availability of data raises uncertainty about whether a low- or high-dimensional ML approach is most suitable for drawability assessment. This work compares the accuracy of a low-dimensional, feature-based Linear Support Vector surrogate and an adapted high-dimensional PointNet model under different dataset sizes. The dataset is composed of parametrically generated, U-shaped structural sheet metal parts. We use a one-step simulation scheme and evaluate results with a Forming Limit Diagram (FLD) to label drawability. Results show the point of transition to be at about 500 training samples, from which onwards Deep learning is advantageous. Moreover, the generalizability of these models is tested on a second dataset with topologically similar components. This is to assess the potential for a geometrically more comprehensive evaluation. In a specified level of soil succession, a special kind of plant family benefits on the Fungal to Bacteria Ratio. The ability to determine this ratio in situ without complex chemical applications is part of the project Electronical Laboratory for Intelligent Soil Examination (ELISE). Several mechanical and optical tests on soil samples are covered within this Project. To analyze the fungal to bacteria ratio, samples are prepared automatically - in a defined and reproductive procedure - to generate slides for shadowing microscopy. The samples are observed by a camera, which is attached to a transmitted light microscope. The automatic analysis, done with computer vision algorithms, aims to quantify bacterial and fungal biomass in the actual sample view. Moreover, the algorithm can classify organisms according to their color and shape. To get a processable picture, several images from different focal levels must be taken through the sample thickness. Parts of each image, are in focus at the actual layer, are merged to a whole depth of field picture, by focus stacking. This produced picture is used to classify, locate and quantify - in first step filamentous organisms e.g. fungal by image sematic segmentation. The result represents an image sized mask, which indicates the class of fungi with class equivalate values at the pixel positions - covered by the organism. This information is used to calculate the fungal mass per gram soil. To quantify the bacterial biomass two approaches are implemented. For low density of bacterial existence, the individual bacteria is counted for a part of the field of view by an image detection algorithm to be extrapolate afterwards to the mass per gram soil. For high density of bacterial occurrence, specified regions of interest with only bacteria present are chosen. An image classification which has been pretrained by pictures of bacterial density patterns - previously determent by making the sample countable due to preforming sample dilutions, is done. The second option for high density bacterial count is, to automatically preform dilutions until the image detection is confidently countable.
