In terms of content, BVM focused on the computer-aided analysis of medical image data with a wide range of applications, e.g. in the area of imaging, diagnostics, operation planning, computer-aided intervention and visualization. During this time, there have been remarkable methodological developments and upheavals, on which the BVM community has worked intensively. The area of machine learning should be emphasized, which has led to significant improvements, especially for tasks of classification and segmentation, but increasingly also in image formation and registration. As a result, work in connection with deep learning now dominates the BVM. These developments have also contributed to the establishment of medical image processing at the interface between computer science and medicine as one of the key technologies for the digitization of the health system. In addition to the presentation of current research results, a central aspect of the BVM is primarily the promotion of young scientists from the diverse BVM community, covering not only Germany but also Austria, Switzerland, The Netherland and other European neighbors. The conference serves primarily doctoral students and postdocs, but also students with excellent bachelor and master theses as a platform to present their work, to enter into professional discourse with the community, and to establish networks with specialist colleagues. Despite the many conferences and congresses that are also relevant for medical image processing, the BVM has therefore lost none of its importance and attractiveness and has retained its permanent place in the annual conference rhythm. Building on this foundation, there are some innovations and changes this year. The BVM 2021 was organized for the first time at the Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Regensburg (OTH Regensburg, a technical university of applied sciences). After Aachen, Berlin, Erlangen, Freiburg, Hamburg, Heidelberg, Leipzig, L{\"u}beck, and Munich, Regensburg is not just a new venue. OTH Regensburg is the first representative of the universities of applied sciences (HAW) to organize the conference, which differs to universities, university hospitals, or research centers like Fraunhofer or Helmholtz. This also considers the further development of the research landscape in Germany, where HAWs increasingly contribute to applied research in addition to their focus on teaching. This development is also reflected in the contributions submitted to the BVM in recent years. At BVM 2021, which was held in a virtual format for the first time due to the Corona pandemic, an attractive and high-quality program was offered. Fortunately, the number of submissions increased significantly. Out of 97 submissions, 26 presentations, 51 posters and 5 software demonstrations were accepted via an anonymized reviewing process with three reviews each. The three best works have been awarded BVM prizes, selected by a separate committee. Based on these high-quality submissions, we are able to present another special issue in the International Journal of Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery (IJCARS). Out of the 97 submissions, the ones with the highest scores have been invited to submit an extended version of their paper to be presented in IJCARS. As a result, we are now able to present this special issue with seven excellent articles. To achieve this goal, a safe, efficient, and cost-effective SARS-CoV-2 testing system for schools in addition to standard hygiene measures is necessary. Methods: We implemented the screening WICOVIR concept for schools in the southeast of Germany, which is based on gargling at home, pooling of samples in schools, and assessment of SARS-CoV-2 by pool rRT-PCR, performed decentralized in numerous participating laboratories. Depooling was performed if pools were positive, and results were transmitted with software specifically developed for the project within a day. Here, we report the results after the first 13 weeks in the project. Findings: We developed and implemented the proof-of-concept test system within a pilot phase of 7 weeks based on almost 17,000 participants. After 6 weeks in the main phase of the project, we performed >100,000 tests in total, analyzed in 7,896 pools, identifying 19 cases in >100 participating schools. On average, positive children showed an individual CT value of 31 when identified in the pools. Up to 30 samples were pooled (mean 13) in general, based on school classes and attached school staff. All three participating laboratories detected positive samples reliably with their previously established rRT-PCR standard protocols. When self-administered antigen tests were performed concomitantly in positive cases, only one of these eight tests was positive, and when antigen tests performed after positive pool rRT-PCR results were already known were included, 3 out of 11 truly positive tests were also identified by antigen testing. After 3 weeks of repetitive WICOVIR testing twice weekly, the detection rate of positive children in that cohort decreased significantly from 0.042 to 0.012 (p = 0.008). This study investigates the effects of process-related irregularities, heat and surface treatment on the morphology, mechanical response, and expansion behavior of 316L stainless steel stents produced by laser powder bed fusion and provides a methodological approach for their numerical evaluation. A combined experimental and computational framework is used, based on both actual and computationally reconstructed laser powder bed fused stents. Process-related morphological deviations between the as-designed and actual laser powder bed fused stents were observed, resulting in a diameter increase by a factor of 2-2.6 for the stents without surface treatment and 1.3-2 for the electropolished stent compared to the as-designed stent. Thus, due to the increased geometrically induced stiffness, the laser powder bed fused stents in the as-built (7.11 ± 0.63 N) or the heat treated condition (5.87 ± 0.49 N) showed increased radial forces when compressed between two plates. After electropolishing, the heat treated stents exhibited radial forces (2.38 ± 0.23 N) comparable to conventional metallic stents. The laser powder bed fused stents were further affected by the size effect, resulting in a reduced yield strength by 41\% in the as-built and by 59\% in the heat treated condition compared to the bulk material obtained from tensile tests. The presented numerical approach was successful in predicting the macroscopic mechanical response of the stents under compression. During deformation, increased stiffness and local stress concentration were observed within the laser powder bed fused stents. Subsequent numerical expansion analysis of the derived stent models within a previously verified numerical model of stent expansion showed that electropolished and heat treated laser powder bed fused stents can exhibit comparable expansion behavior to conventional stents. Separating waste has become natural for urban populations, as recycling is ecologically necessary. However, the separation also leads to a continuously increasing number of containers which are logistically unmanageable without computer-aided collection scheduling. Regensburg recently introduced a new program for the collection of biological waste, which extends the private collection of such waste by a few hundred public biological waste containers. Computer support was pretty basic so far, i.e. the collection times were recorded and the routes were sporadically rescheduled manually in an Excel sheet. We show that much shorter waste collection routes can be found automatically using a dynamic version of the classic Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm for shortening the collection routes. Moreover, we sketch an loT (lnternet-of-Things) approach to "lntelligent Waste Containers" which we equip with ultrasonic sensors monitoring the fill levels, which allows us to skip poorly used containers during the collection and reposition them on demand. By means of a computer simulation with online visualization, we illustrate that our optimized and dynamically adapted collection routes lead to significant time savings. Grid application programmers have to take into account several complicated aspects: distribution of data and computations, parallel computations on different sites and processors, heterogeneity of the involved computers, load balancing, etc. Grid programmers thus demand novel programming methodologies that abstract over such technical details while preserving the beneficial features of modern grid middleware. For this purpose, the authors introduce Higher-Order Components (HOCs). HOCs implement generic parallel/distributed processing patterns, together with the required middleware support, and they are offered to users via a high-level service interface. Users only have to provide the application-specific pieces of their programs as parameters, while low-level implementation details, such as the transfer of data across the grid, are handled by the HOCs. HOCs were developed within the CoreGRID European Network of Excellence and have become an optional extension of the popular Globus middleware. The latter includes technologies developed within CoreGRID for simplifying Grid programming: the Grid ComponentModel (GCM) and Higher- Order Components (HOCs). Components support developing applications on the Grid without taking all the technical details of the particular platform type into account (network communication, heterogeneity, etc.). The GCMenables a hierarchical composition of programpieces and HOCs enable the reuse of component code in the development of new applications by specifying application-specific operations in a program via code parameters. When a programmer is provided, e. g., with a compute farm HOC, only the independent worker tasks must be described. But, once an application exhibits data or control dependences, the trivial farm is no longer sufficient. Here, the power of loop parallelization tools, like LooPo, comes into play: by embedding LooPo into a HOC, we show that these two technologies in combination facilitate the automatic transformation of a sequential loop nest with complex dependences (supplied by the user as a HOC parameter) into an ordered task graph, which can be processed on the Grid in parallel. In this paper, we consider the combination of Higher-Order Components (HOCs) with the Fractal component model and the ProActive library. HOCs are parallel programming components, made accessible on the grid via Web services that use a special class loader enabling code mobility: executable code can be uploaded to a HOC, allowing one to customize the HOC. Fractal simplifies the composition of components and the ProActive library offers a generator for automatically creating Web services from components composed with Fractal, as long as all the parameters of these services have primitive types. Taking all the advantages of HOCs, ProActive and Fractal together, the obvious conclusion is that composing HOCs using Fractal and automatically exposing them as Web services on the grid via ProActive minimizes the required efforts for building complex grid systems. In this context, we solved the problem of exchanging code-carrying parameters in automatically generated Web services by integrating the HOC class loading mechanism into the ProActive library.}, language = {en} } @incollection{GorlatchDuennweber, author = {Gorlatch, Sergei and D{\"u}nnweber, Jan}, title = {From Grid Middleware to Grid Applications}, series = {Future Generation Grids}, booktitle = {Future Generation Grids}, editor = {Getov, Vladimir and Laforenza, Domenico and Reinefeld, Alexander}, publisher = {Springer Verlag}, address = {Berlin}, isbn = {978-0-387-27935-0}, doi = {10.1007/978-0-387-29445-2_13}, pages = {241 -- 261}, abstract = {This paper deals with the problem of application programming for grid systems that combine heterogeneous data and computational resources via the Internet. We suggest that this gap needs to be closed in future-generation grids and propose a novel approach to bridging the gap by using Higher-Order Components (HOCs) — recurring patterns of parallel behaviour that are provided to the user as program building blocks with pre-packaged implementation and middleware setup. It discusses relations between sociological and economic aspects of migration and outlines the influence of social capital on migration decision-making and chain migration processes. There have been various attempts to measure these effects through empirical migration research, and this article focuses on two such studies. The first example concerns an investigation of migration intentions among Bulgarians in the 2001 Bulgarian census. The second is return migration in the household context of Italian migrants in Germany, based on data from the German Socio-Economic Panel. The main finding is that social capital at the place of destination has positive impacts on emigration intentions and return migration, whereas social capital at the place of residence has negative impacts on return migration.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{Haug, author = {Haug, Sonja}, title = {Migration Networks and Migration Decision Making}, series = {Workshop der Migration Research Group, Hamburgisches Welt Wirtschafts-Archiv, 13.06.2005}, booktitle = {Workshop der Migration Research Group, Hamburgisches Welt Wirtschafts-Archiv, 13.06.2005}, language = {en} } @article{HaugRuehl, author = {Haug, Sonja and R{\"u}hl, Stefan}, title = {Remigration von Zuwanderern in Deutschland}, series = {Geographische Rundschau}, volume = {4}, journal = {Geographische Rundschau}, number = {6}, publisher = {Westermann}, address = {Braunschweig}, issn = {0016-7460}, pages = {26 -- 33}, subject = {R{\"u}ckwanderer}, language = {de} } @article{HaugRuehlBabkavonGostomski, author = {Haug, Sonja and R{\"u}hl, Stefan and Babka von Gostomski, Christian}, title = {Migranten als T{\"a}ter und Opfer von Gewalt und Kriminalit{\"a}t}, series = {Bew{\"a}hrungshilfe. Research based on official statistics has to deal with different data sets on migration and foreign population resulting in different numbers. Developments in official statistics concentrate on the improvement of data quality. The census 2010/2011 or the projected central population register are important issues, e.g. in respect of sampling and weighting of migrants in surveys. The concept of migration background in the microcensus is a mayor enhancement in population statistics and has become widely accepted. It is recommended to implement questions on migration background in the census 2010/2011 too. The most important accessible data sets in the field of empirical integration research are the microcensus and the German Socio-Economic Panel; there is still untapped potential for analysis in this area. The supplementation of large surveys with a migrant sample is an appreciated trend. Most important challenges for empirical migration and integration research are the development of sampling methods for migrant population (including onomastics and topomastics), studies on new and small migrant groups, research projects in the country of origin, longitudinal migrant surveys and the development of measurement instruments.}, language = {en} } @techreport{Haug, type = {Working Paper}, author = {Haug, Sonja}, title = {Interethnische Kontakte, Freundschaften, Partnerschaften und Ehen von Migranten in Deutschland}, organization = {Bundesamt f{\"u}r Migration und Fl{\"u}chtlinge}, abstract = {Die vorliegenden Daten zeigen, dass die soziale Integration durch vielf{\"a}ltige und auch intensive Alltagskontakte und Freundschaftsbeziehungen zwischen der Bev{\"o}lkerung mit und ohne Migrationshintergrund gekennzeichnet ist.
