Macromolecular Colloquium – Freiburg, Germany - February 12-13, 2026
- Elisabeth Schamel from the Technische Hochschule Nürnberg and University of Potsdam, for her poster "Bio-Based Epoxy Resins as Substitutes for Fossil-Based DGEBA: Structure-Property Insights".
Research summary: Bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (DGEBA), which is used in 90% of epoxy resins, relies on fossil feedstocks and toxic bisphenol A. Promising alternatives are aromatic, low molecular weight natural substances. Different bio-monomers were synthesized and crosslinked with amines. Investigations of these thermosets showed properties comparable to or better than DGEBA-resins, with high Tg up to 300°C. Structure-property-relationships revealed a lowering of Tg due to a methoxy group.
