Affective Responses to Auditory Signals of Young Adults

  • This paper investigates the affective impact of synthesized auditory signals designed for user interfaces, focusing on the categories of auditory information, warning, and emergency signals. Building upon a previously published framework, the present study systematically explores how amplitude envelope parameters and tonality influence emotional perception along the valence–arousal dimensions. Using the modular synthesis, twelve function-specific stimuli were created and evaluated by 27 participants. The use of major versus minor tonalities did not yield consistent or statistically interpretable effects on emotional perception. Based on the survey results, it is assumed that the number of bursts within a certain time determines the value of the valence: The shorter the bursts, the lower the valence. It is assumed that modulating the fundamental frequency tends to a higher arousal.
