Copyright law

The Act on Copyright and Related Rights (German copyright law – Urheberrechtsgesetz, UrhG) shall apply without limitation for documents that are offered via data networks in electronic forms.

The following shall apply in particular:
Single copies (e.g. copies and printouts) may only be made for private and other personal use (Section 53 UrhG). Creation and dissemination of further reproductions shall only be permissible subject to the explicit consent by the author.

The user shall be responsible for adhering to the legal provisions and can be held liable in case of misuse.

If, in turn, you use external image material in your own work, this shall also be subject to copyright law. It is mandatory to provide image credits that can unambiguously be assigned to the image and to obtain printing permission (cf. VG Bildkunst) in this respect). This is facilitated in practice as the Verwertungsgesellschaft Bild-Kunst grants photographic rights for thesis projects for many copyright holders. More detailed information is available on the website Dissonline.de, an online information portal for digital higher education theses.

Licences regulate the rights of use for your publication. By allocating licenses, you can determine who may disseminate, alter or modify your publication or use it in any other way and subject to which conditions.

Irrespective of which license you choose for your work, the copyright of your publication remains with you. It is an inalienable right and can only be transferred to third persons through inheritance (Section 29 UrhG). As the author, you can decide whether your work shall be published at all and who shall be entitled to use it subject to which conditions. Further information on this topic is available in the guidelines published by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the dbv on the topic of copyright law in science and research: "Urheberrecht in der Wissenschaft".

The copyright law shall also serve as a basis for remunerations of the VG Wort. More information is available here.
