    <title language="eng">Three essays on corporate loans</title>
    <abstract language="eng">1. Dual holdings and shareholder-creditor agency conflicts: Evidence from the syndicated loan market&#13;
We examine implications from the expansion of private equity (PE) firms into the CLO (i.e. leveraged lending) business. Due to similarities in the investment universes of CLO managers and PE firms, asset management groups running both of them frequently hold debt and equity claims of the same company. Our results indicate lower credit costs for these companies through mitigation of shareholder-creditor agency conflicts. The lower funding costs imply increased equity returns for the sponsoring PE firms. In addition, our findings suggest that PE-affiliated CLO managers benefit from informed trading in the secondary leveraged loan market.&#13;
&#13;
2. Affiliated investment bias in collateralized loan obligations&#13;
Collateralized loan obligation (CLO) managers are often part of asset management groups that also operate private equity (PE) firms. This paper examines whether these CLO managers exhibit a bias towards loans to companies sponsored by their affiliated PE firms. We find that CLO managers overweight these affiliated investments in their portfolios. Purchase level analyses reveal that the positive relationship between affiliation and investment is highly concentrated in primary market trades. Evidence suggests that the affiliated investment bias is partially explained by group-level incentives to support the funding of the PE firm’s portfolio companies. Moreover, preferential allocations by loan arrangers contribute to the observed bias.&#13;
&#13;
3. Revisions to the Basel securitization framework and their impact on CLOs&#13;
In December 2017, the European regulation on capital requirements for securitizations was comprehensively revised. This paper examines the impact of these revisions on collateralized loan obligations (CLOs). A comparison of the results of risk weight calculations for a typical CLO under the previous and revised frameworks shows an overall increase in capital requirements. The increase is particularly pronounced under the new standardized approach (SEC-SA). However, difference-in-difference analyses of credit spreads indicate no effect of the higher capital requirements on the interest rates of CLO tranches. These results suggest that the cost of regulatory capital requirements for banks is limited.

    <title language="eng">Three essays on asset management and capital allocation</title>
    <abstract language="eng">This dissertation explores key challenges and innovations in contemporary asset management through three self-contained empirical essays. Each paper examines a distinct but interrelated topic in portfolio construction, contributing to a more resilient and practically viable approach to investing.&#13;
Paper 1: The Performance of Risk-Based Asset Allocation in Downward Markets – An Empirical Examination&#13;
The first paper investigates the effectiveness of risk-based portfolio strategies – such as minimum variance, equal risk contribution, and risk parity – during periods of market stress. Motivated by the shortcomings of return-optimized models in crisis periods, the paper conducts an extensive backtest using a multi-asset dataset across several downturns. It finds that risk-based strategies consistently offer superior downside protection and more stable performance compared to traditional approaches. These results underscore the robustness of risk-focused allocations when facing uncertain or volatile markets.&#13;
Paper 2: A Performance “Horse Race”: Does Anything Beat the 1/N Portfolio?&#13;
The second paper revisits the enduring puzzle of the 1/N (equal-weighted) portfolio's performance. Despite its simplicity, previous research has shown it often rivals or outperforms optimized strategies. Using an expanded dataset and robust methodology,&#13;
this paper compares a wide range of portfolio construction techniques – including mean-variance optimization and shrinkage methods – against the 1/N benchmark. The findings reaffirm the strong performance of the naïve strategy, particularly when estimation error and real-world frictions are considered. While some optimized models perform better in specific contexts, none dominate consistently.&#13;
Paper 3: Index Tracking in Crisis Periods – An Empirical Investigation of the German DAX Index&#13;
The third paper shifts focus to passive investment strategies, specifically the accuracy and stability of index tracking during market crises. Using the German DAX as a case study, the paper compares multiple tracking approaches – such as constrained regression and relative optimization – under both normal and crisis conditions. Results reveal that tracking performance deteriorates notably in turbulent markets, with simpler, constraint-based methods offering more consistent tracking accuracy. This highlights the limitations of passive strategies under stress and points to the need for more adaptive frameworks.

    <title language="eng">From bias to balance: the influence of gender shift and implicit gender role theories on product perception, product design, and AI-advertisements</title>
    <abstract language="eng">The influence of gender bias continues to exert a pervasive impact on various aspects of our society, including the perception and consumption of products that surround us. Nevertheless, there are indications that gender roles are undergoing a process of change, albeit in a manner that is not uniform. The objective of this thesis is to examine the impact of societal gender shifts reflected on the way in which products are perceived, designed, and advertised. &#13;
Study 1 investigates the extent to which gender bias and the shift of gender roles are reflected on products’ gender perception. Moreover, it analyses the influence of implicit gender role theories on this process.&#13;
The objective of Study 2 is to determine the extent to which these phenomena manifest on product design, with a view to establishing whether designers’ implicit gender role theories exert an influence on this process. &#13;
Finally, in Study 3, the presence of gender bias in advertisements generated by an artificial intelligence is examined. &#13;
The results of the studies demonstrate that, despite the persistence of gender bias, there has been a significant advancement. A more inclusive approach to gender identity is becoming evident, as showed by the increasing number of products perceived as gender-neutral, the inclusion of mixed design elements associated with femininity and masculinity on product design, and the reduction of gender bias in AI-generated advertisements. This shift is characterised by a move away from the traditional binary concept of gender and towards a more expansive understanding of gender identity that encompasses a broader population.

    <title language="eng">Work in progress: investigating the Future of Work</title>
    <abstract language="eng">This cumulative dissertation contributes to the research stream Future of Work and focuses on alternative workplace arrangements, especially when employees rely on information and communication technologies to communicate virtual feedback. More specifically, this dissertation addresses (1) the various conceptualizations and terminologies which researchers use for analyzing alternative work arrangements since the 1970s, (2) the multidimensional nature of virtual feedback, its effects on an individual and team level as well as the underlying cognitive processes when receiving virtual feedback, and (3) the effect of feedback on performance improvement when teams receive in-person or virtual feedback. This results in the following three manuscripts:&#13;

    <title language="eng">Reasoning, investigating, and overcoming employee silence in professional service firms</title>
    <abstract language="eng">This cumulative dissertation examines the phenomenon of employee silence in professional service firms (PSFs). Although both research streams are independently well-established areas of organizational research, there has been a lack of research investigating the withholding of information, problems, or concerns in the knowledge-intensive context of PSFs. This thesis starts the academic and practitioner discourse about it and opens a multitude of further research opportunities.&#13;
The first manuscript draws on a literature-based and conceptual approach to examine the intersections of PSF and silence research. It identifies characteristics of PSFs that lead to employee silence and derives research propositions about the links between PSFs and silence. By applying a multi-method research approach, the second manuscript empirically investigates the extent to which employee silence is prevalent in PSFs. It determines PSF-specific antecedents fostering the unfavorable phenomenon and professionals' motives to remain silent. The third manuscript takes a grounded-theory approach to examine how employee silence in PSFs can be prevented or reduced. It develops overarching fields of action and concrete measures that help practitioners overcome employee silence.

    <title language="eng">Three articles on a decision support system providing individual error pattern feedback versus automated debiasing of judgments</title>
The objective of this cumulative dissertation is to mitigate cognitive bias in human expert judgments intending to increase accuracy of judgments. The latter is important as it is known to be essential for business success. The approach for this purpose is to combine the strengths of humans and machines by giving the expert feedback generated by a statistical model (the machine) based on previous errors of the expert. Based on this concept of collaborative intelligence, a Decision Support System (DSS) is developed and tested in several experiments. The cumulative dissertation consists of three articles. Article 1 and Article 2 investigate different aspects of the DSS and Article 3 merges and supports the statements thereof. Article 1 considers the impact of personal error pattern feedback on further point estimates. The error feedback is based on personal prior judgments originating from different categories, assuming that experts selectively apply the feedback and are able to reduce bias and error. Thereby it is examined, how the feedback is used to change the direction of error and to reduce bias and error. This is investigated in general disregarding categories as well as selectively regarding difference between categories. Article 1 also covers the comparison between human corrected bias and machine auto-corrected bias. Article 2 deals with experiments with the same DSS, but focusing on certainty (confidence) interval estimation and decreasing overprecision (overconfidence) and over- and underestimation biases. Here, the DSS requires users to indicate a 90% certainty interval as an answer to estimation questions. It is investigated how feedback based on own error patterns can help to reduce overprecision by broadening certainty intervals. Moreover, aiming to mitigate over- and underestimation biases, shifts of the intervals are examined. Article 3 supports the statements of Article 1 and 2 by taking into account additional experiments with a larger sample size with the same categories as well as new categories to make the results more robust and generally valid. Article 3 also includes a further analysis regarding the comparison between human corrected bias and machine auto-corrected bias.

    <title language="eng">Unveiling the digital mindset: theoretical foundations, conceptualization and scale development</title>
    <abstract language="eng">This cumulative dissertation examines an individual’s digital mindset including its theoretical foundations. While the construct receives growing attention from academics and practitioners, research is still in its infancy with limited and heterogeneous conceptualizations. &#13;
The first manuscript conducts a systematic literature review on mindset definitions and conceptualizations prevalent in the management and business literature, contributing to the clarity of the mindset construct.&#13;
The second manuscript follows a multi-grounded theory approach to systematically define and conceptualize an individual’s digital mindset, posing an essential competency in the context of digital transformation.&#13;
The third manuscript builds on this definition and develops and validates a scale (DIMI-scale) to measure the construct throughout five phases.

    <title language="deu">Die gewissenhafte Abschlussprüfung im digitalen Zeitalter</title>
    <abstract language="deu">Die Arbeitswelt der Wirtschaftsprüfer unterliegt einem dauerhaften Wandel von Regulatorik und Technik. Während der deutsche Gesetzgeber für die durchzuführende Abschlussprüfung als Hauptanker lediglich verlangt, dass diese „gewissenhaft“ zu erfolgen hat (§§ 317 Abs. 1 Satz 3, 323 Abs. 1 Satz 1 HGB, 43 Abs. 1 WPO), schildern die entwickelten berufsständischen Normapparate ein detailliertes Vorgehen. Als weitere und neue Kraft der Veränderung in der Arbeitswelt der Wirtschaftsprüfer wirkt die Digitalisierung. Mit ihr entstehen neue Anwendungen in Form informationstechnologischer (IT) Verfahren für die Durchführung von Abschlussprüfungen.&#13;
&#13;
Konfliktpotential bieten insbesondere Verfahren der regelsuchenden Systeme. Ihre Eigenschaft, Muster in unstrukturierten Datengrundlagen von selbst zu entdecken und aus diesen zu lernen, macht insbesondere die Anwendung von Künstlicher Intelligenz (KI) im Bereich der Entscheidungen des Abschlussprüfers über die Risiken wesentlicher falscher Angaben aufgrund von Verstößen („fraud“) bedeutsam (IDW PS 210/ISA [DE] 240). Sie stehen den noch häufig regelbasierten Suchverfahren von Manipulationen in den Buchungsdaten gegenüber, bei denen der Prüfer zunächst selbst auf Basis seiner Risikoeinschätzung dem System die zu analysierenden Risikobereiche vorgibt. Maschine und Mensch ergänzen sich hier bisher. Der technische Fortschritt deutet an, dass es nicht dabei bleiben muss. KI übernimmt anschaulich bedeutsame Arbeitsschritte auch auf einer persönlichen, subjektiv-bezogenen oder auch kognitiven Ebene.&#13;
&#13;
Konfliktär erscheinen vor diesem Hintergrund die personen-bezogenen, subjektiv-bezogenen Pflichten des Abschlussprüfers wie die Eigenverantwortlichkeit (§ 43 Abs. 1 Satz 1 WPO), das pflichtgemäße Ermessen und die Wahrung einer kritischen Grundhaltung (§ 43 Abs. 4 WPO). Der hier zu untersuchende Fragenkomplex mit Blick auf die fortschreitende Digitalisierung der Abschlussprüfung lautet daher: Welchen Einfluss hat der Wirtschaftsprüfer als persönlicher Pflichtenträger noch auf sein Prüfungsurteil? – und: Welchen Einfluss muss er zwingend behalten? Wann kann im digitalen Zeitalter noch von einer „gewissenhaften Abschlussprüfung“ gesprochen werden?&#13;
&#13;

    <title language="mul">Mathematische Modelle und Metaheuristiken zur Optimierung der Transportplanung von Drohnen</title>
    <abstract language="deu">Die vorliegende kumulative Dissertation befasst sich mit vier Problemstellungen der Transportplanung im Falle der Übernahme des Paket- und Medikamententransports durch Lieferwagen und Drohnen. &#13;
&#13;
Der erste Beitrag thematisiert die Fahrzeugflottenplanung und Zuweisung von Drohnen zu Mikrodepots, wenn Lieferwagen und Drohnen den Transport von Paketen in der letzten Meile übernehmen. Im Vordergrund stehen die taktischen Entscheidungen, welche Kombination von Auslieferungsformen mit Lieferwagen und Drohnen optimal wäre sowie die Ausgestaltung der Fahrzeugflotte. Die Problemstellung wird als gemischt-ganzzahliges lineares Programm (MILP) modelliert. Zudem wird eine adaptive große Nachbarschaftssuche (ALNS) eingeführt, die neue problemspezifische Operatoren beinhaltet. &#13;
&#13;
Der zweite Beitrag fokussiert sich auf die operative Tourenplanung eines Lieferwagens, welcher mit mehreren Drohnen ausgerüstet ist. Hierfür wird ein effizientes MILP entwickelt, welches ein kommerzieller Solver schneller lösen kann als vergleichbare MILPs für eine Ein-Drohnen Problematik aus der Literatur. &#13;
&#13;
Der dritte Beitrag optimiert die simultane Bestands- und Tourenplanung für die Belieferung von Krankenhäusern unter der Berücksichtigung ihrer Lagerhaltungspolitiken. Es wird analysiert, welchen Einfluss Drohnen als Vehikel für Notfalltransporte zur Vermeidung von Fehlmengen haben. Die Problemstellung wird als zweistufiges stochastisches Programm präsentiert und eine problemspezifische ALNS wird entwickelt, welche einen innovativen Algorithmus zur Bestimmung von Bestellpunkten innerhalb der Lagerhaltungspolitiken beinhaltet. &#13;
&#13;
    <abstract language="eng">This cumulative dissertation addresses four problems in transportation planning in the case of delivery trucks and drones taking over parcel and medicine delivery.&#13;
&#13;
The first paper covers vehicle fleet planning and assignment of drones to microdepots when both trucks and drones can handle the last-mile delivery of packages. The focus is on tactical decisions as to which combination of delivery methods with trucks and drones is optimal, as well as the number of trucks, drones, and microdepots used. The problem is modeled as a mixed-integer linear program (MILP). In addition, an adaptive large neighborhood search (ALNS) is introduced, which includes new problem-specific operators. &#13;
&#13;
The second paper focuses on optimizing the operational routing of a truck that is equipped with multiple drones. For this purpose, an efficient MILP has been developed, which a commercial solver can solve faster than comparable MILPs from the literature for a one-drone problem. &#13;
&#13;
The third paper simultaneously optimizes inventory and routing for clinic supplies, while taking their inventory policies into account. The influence of drones as vehicles for emergency transport to avoid shortages is analyzed. The problem is presented as a two-stage stochastic program, and a problem-specific ALNS is developed, which includes an innovative algorithm for determining reorder points within the inventory policies. &#13;
&#13;
The fourth paper covers the design of drone fleets for deliveries to pharmacies and ambulances at service by a wholesaler. For this purpose, the cost- or CO2-emission-minimal drone fleet is determined in a discrete-event simulation optimization.

    <title language="deu">Distressed M&amp;A in Emerging Markets
 unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Unternehmensbewertung</title>
    <abstract language="deu">Im Zuge der fortschreitenden Globalisierung ist mit einer Zunahme der internationalen Verflechtung der Märkte zu rechnen, die in Zukunft potenziell zu einer Umverteilung der internationalen Bedeutung der Emerging Markets führt. Um international wettbewerbsfähig zu bleiben und den Shareholder Value mittel bis langfristig zu erhöhen, sind diese Märkte für Investoren und Unternehmen aus Industrieländern nicht vernachlässigbar. Anstatt selbstständig eine (Tochter-)Gesellschaft in den Emerging Markets aufzubauen, bietet sich die Übernahme eines bereits existierenden Unternehmens in dem Markt an. Insbesondere distressed Unternehmen, die sich in finanzieller Schieflage befinden, können eine interessante Einstiegs- oder Erweiterungsoption in die Emerging Markets darstellen. Es resultiert jedoch die Fragestellung, wie distressed Unternehmen in Emerging Markets adäquat zu bewerten sind.&#13;

    <title language="eng">Customer success management as a strategic function</title>
    <abstract language="eng">This cumulative dissertation investigates the newly emerged phenomenon of customer success management (CSM). CSM has received a significant amount of attention from academics and practitioners alike. However, the body of academic literature is still in its infancy, especially when comparing CSM’s relevance to the field of relationship marketing.&#13;
Manuscript 1: Zakrzewski, K., Krause, V., Pfaff, C. &amp; Seidenstricker, S. (2023). Is customer success management a new relationship marketing practice? A review, definition, and future research agenda based on practice theory. &#13;
Manuscript 2: Zakrzewski, K., Krause, V., Eberl, D. &amp; Rangarajan, D. (2023). Dynamic &amp; proactive segmentation of post-sale customer relationships in B2B subscription settings: The customer health score.&#13;
Manuscript 3: Zakrzewski, K. (2023). Customer success management - closing a capability gap in the customer-focused structure toward customer centricity in B2B service contexts.&#13;
The first manuscript adopts a new approach to the investigation of CSM, providing a practice-based definition that distinguishes CSM from other relationship marketing constructs. By utilizing the 3 Ps framework of practice theory (praxis, practices, and practitioners), the definition of CSM as a strategic function was refined. In addition, the second manuscript utilized praxis to develop the customer health score, which can be used as an indicator for the dynamic and proactive segmentation of customers. The third manuscript builds on this functional definition to show how CSM’s organizational embeddedness can help overcome barriers to customer centricity by enabling adaptive organizational capability.

    <title language="eng">Integrated models for the selection and weighting of individual opinions and forecasts in expectation and forecast combination</title>
    <title language="deu">Integrierte Modelle zur Selektion und Gewichtung individueller Meinungen und Vorhersagen in der Erwartungs- und Prognosekombination</title>
    <abstract language="eng">In forecast combination, multiple predictions are linearly combined through the assignment of weights to individual forecast models or forecasters. Various approaches exist for defining the weights, which typically involve determining the number of models to be used for combination (selection), choosing an appropriate weighting function for the forecast scenario (weighting), and using regularization techniques to adjust the calculated weights (shrinkage). The papers listed address the integration of the three approaches into holistic data analytical models. &#13;
The first paper develops a two-stage model in which weights are first calculated based on the in-sample error covariances to minimize the error on the available data by combining the individual models. Based on the selection status of a model, the weight of an individual model is then linearly shrunk either toward the mean or toward zero. The selection status is thereby derived apriori from information criteria, where Contribution 1 introduces the selection based on the model’s in-sample accuracy and performance robustness under uncertainty.&#13;
Contribution 2 modifies the two-stage model to shrink the forecasters’ weights non-proportionally to the mean or zero. Further, a new information criterion based on forward feature selection is proposed that iteratively selects the forecaster that is expected to achieve the largest increase in accuracy when combined. &#13;
Contribution 3 extends the iteration-based information criterion presented in the second contribution to consider diversity gains in addition to accuracy gains when selecting and combining forecasters. &#13;
A one-stage model for simultaneous weighting, shrinking, and selection is finally built and evaluated on simulated data in Contribution 4. Instead of requiring a prior selection criterion, the model itself learns which forecasters to shrink to the mean or to zero, while relying on a new sampling procedure to tune the model.
    <abstract language="deu">Bei der Vorhersagekombination werden mehrere Vorhersagen durch die Zuordnung von Gewichten zu einzelnen Vorhersagemodellen oder Prognostikern linear kombiniert. Für die Festlegung der Gewichte existieren verschiedene Ansätze, die typischerweise die Bestimmung der Anzahl der für die Kombination zu verwendenden Modelle (Auswahl), die Wahl einer geeigneten Gewichtungsfunktion für das Prognoseszenario (Gewichtung) und die Verwendung von Regularisierungstechniken zur Anpassung der berechneten Gewichte (Schrumpfung) umfassen. Die aufgeführten Arbeiten befassen sich mit der Integration der drei Ansätze in ganzheitliche datenanalytische Modelle. &#13;
Im ersten Beitrag wird ein zweistufiges Modell entwickelt, bei dem zunächst Gewichte auf Basis der In-Sample-Fehlerkovarianzen berechnet werden, um den Fehler auf den verfügbaren Daten durch Kombination der einzelnen Modelle zu minimieren. Basierend auf dem Selektionsstatus eines Modells wird das Gewicht eines einzelnen Modells dann linear entweder gegen den Mittelwert oder gegen Null geschrumpft. Der Selektionsstatus wird dabei apriori aus Informationskriterien abgeleitet, wobei Beitrag 1 die Selektion auf der Grundlage der Genauigkeit des Modells in der Stichprobe und der Robustheit der Leistung unter Unsicherheit einführt. &#13;
Beitrag 2 modifiziert das zweistufige Modell, um die Gewichte der Prognostiker nichtproportional zum Mittelwert oder zu Null zu schrumpfen. Außerdem wird ein neues Informationskriterium vorgeschlagen, das auf der Auswahl von Vorwärtsmerkmalen beruht und iterativ den Prognostiker auswählt, von dem erwartet wird, dass er in der Kombination die größte Genauigkeitssteigerung erzielt. &#13;
Beitrag 3 erweitert das im zweiten Beitrag vorgestellte iterationsbasierte Informationskriterium, um bei der Auswahl und Kombination von Prognostikern zusätzlich zu den Genauigkeitsgewinnen auch Diversitätsgewinne zu berücksichtigen. &#13;

    <abstract language="deu">In Anbetracht großer globaler Herausforderungen ist in den letzten Jahren die Frage, wie mit nachhaltiger Geldanlage ein positiver Einfluss auf die Erreichung von Nachhaltigkeitszielen genommen werden kann, immer weiter in den Fokus geraten. Dieses Verständnis hat sich jedoch bei zahlreichen Anbietern von Nachhaltigkeitsfonds noch nicht durchgesetzt und auch die akademische Auseinandersetzung mit nachhaltiger Geldanlage fokussiert sich bisher vor allem auf eine Analyse der finanziellen Auswirkungen dieser Anlageform. Eine weitere Lücke in der akademischen Betrachtung ist eine ausführliche Auseinandersetzung mit der Praxis christlich geprägter Geldanlage. &#13;
&#13;
    <abstract language="eng">In view of the major global challenges, the question of how sustainable investment can have a positive influence on the achievement of sustainability goals has come increasingly into focus in recent years. However, this understanding has not yet been adopted by numerous providers of sustainability funds, and also the academic discussion of sustainable investment has so far focused primarily on an analysis of the financial effects of this form of investment. Another gap in the academic discussion is a detailed examination of the practice of Christian-influenced investment.&#13;
&#13;
Paper 1 develops the conceptual basis for the subsequent articles. Building on this, paper 2 analyses literature on the question of which investment techniques should be preferred in order to achieve an improvement in the sustainability performance of portfolio companies. Paper 3, an empirical study, uses the findings of the first two papers to investigate whether and - if so - how influencing the sustainability performance of portfolio companies is embedded in the investment policies of sustainability fund providers. Paper 4, also an empirical study, sheds light on the practice of Christian-influenced sustainability funds. On the one hand, it analyses which filters and investment techniques are used. On the other hand, part of the category system developed in paper 3 is used to determine how important improving the sustainability performance of portfolio companies is for fund providers.

    <title language="eng">The role of culture in education and innovation</title>
    <abstract language="eng">In this dissertation, I investigate how innate decision-making tools, such as culture and curiosity, affect individual economic education and innovation decisions. The cumulative dissertation consists of the following four chapters:&#13;
&#13;
Chapter 1: Culture in Individual Economic Decision-Making—A Conceptual Contribution&#13;
&#13;
Chapter 2: Individualism and the Formation of Human Capital (based on joint work with Sven Resnjanskij, Jens Ruhose, and Simon Wiederhold)&#13;
&#13;
Chapter 3: Individualism, Creativity, and Innovation&#13;
&#13;
Chapter 4: Play Stupid Games, Win Stupid Prizes? Casino-Based Evidence on Exploration Strategies and Curiosity in a High-Complexity Game (based on joint work with Alexander Patt)&#13;
&#13;
Through a combination of methods (theoretical as well as structural and reduced-form empirical work) and data sources (ranging from large-scale international data to experimentally generated data), each chapter answers a distinct but related research question:&#13;
&#13;
While the first chapter contributes to our conceptual understanding of culture in an economic context, chapters two and three are dedicated to investigating economic effects of individualism. Individualism is a polarizing dimension of culture with its emphasis on personal achievement and personal responsibility. Although individualism is an established driver of long-run economic growth, the underlying individual-level mechanisms have not been well understood. To close this research gap, I study the role of individualism in individual education and innovation decisions. Using data from an international skill assessment, the second chapter shows that individualism strongly and positively affects human capital investments. Individualism matters more for human capital formation than any other dimension of culture found in the economic literature and should, thus, be included more rigorously in the education production function. Complementarily, the third chapter reveals that individualism is positively related to individual innovativeness – which is captured by a wide range of measures from selection into creative-innovative occupations and knowledge diffusion on the job to creativity traits and patenting. &#13;
&#13;
Focusing on the exploration-exploitation trade-off that is prevalent in innovation decisions, the fourth chapter uses slot machine games to investigate exploration behavior in a natural yet controlled setting. The experimental results document that a significant group of players engage in curiosity-based exploration related to the game’s entropy. The different player types identified in the data showcase the variety of strategies economic agents use to navigate a high-uncertainty high-complexity decision environment.&#13;
&#13;
To embrace diversity in thoughts and approaches economically, an understanding of the specific role of cultural tools in economic decision making is imperative.

Beitrag 4: Kai Sandner, Sebastian Sieber, Marleen Tellermann und Frank Walthes (2020). A Lean Six Sigma framework for the insurance industry: insights and lessons learned from a case study, Journal of Business Economics 90, S. 845-878, https://doi.org/10.1007/s11573-020-00989-9 [VHB-JQ3: B].&#13;
&#13;
    <abstract language="eng">In four papers, this cumulative dissertation investigates the impact of non-tax effects of the corporate tax strategy (CTS) and a conceptual framework for process optimization on selected stakeholder groups and thus addresses current challenges of successful stakeholder orientation.&#13;
&#13;
Paper 1 shows experimentally that the CTS influences the attractiveness of a company from the perspective of potential employees and that the identified effect is moderated by personal characteristics of the applicants. Paper 2 addresses new disclosure requirements in the context of non-financial reporting, which are intended to increase tax transparency. In an experiment, investors react to the additional information on CTS in non-financial reporting. Again, the influence on the investment decision depends upon character traits of the investors. Since non-financial reporting not only addresses investors, paper 3 shows in a literature-based analysis how customers, as another key stakeholder group, react to increasing tax transparency. Paper 4 develops a conceptual framework for process optimization based on the Lean and Six Sigma methods for the service industry and shows in a case study the expected positive effect on employee and customer satisfaction.

    <title language="eng">Essays on unintended economic consequences of government interventions</title>
    <abstract language="eng">In this cumulative dissertation, I investigate unintended economic consequences of government interventions in three essays, each looking at a very specific question. The first essay examines how the introduction and enhancement of public pension systems affect demography, the second essay focuses on tax evasion via citizenship-by-investment programs, and the third essay evaluates the diversion of foreign financial assistance by powerful elites from recipient countries.&#13;
&#13;
Despite the different research questions, all three essays evolve around the issue that actions of governments almost always create incentives causing unforeseen or unexpected behavioral responses. The first essay shows that increasing pension wealth creates incentives to save less for old-age in the form of own children, the second essay documents that policy instruments that increase the detection probability of tax evasion create incentives for evaders to find new ways to circumvent the law, and the third essay shows that foreign assistance creates rent-seeking incentives.&#13;
&#13;
The results collected in the dissertation have implications for economic policy: Government interventions must be informed by an understanding of how well policies and programs produce (or contribute to) their desired outcomes. The results of all three essays presented in this thesis demonstrate that unforeseen or unexpected behavioral responses to government interventions can lead to economic outcomes or side effects that are divergent or contrary to the intentions of policymakers. These unintended economic consequences can significantly lessen the effectiveness of the policy or render it unsustainable. The first essay illustrates that the fertility effects of public pensions can erode the contribution base and, thus, the sustainability and political acceptance of a PAYG pension system in the long-run. The second essay shows that loopholes that have been found by evaders can lessen the deterrence effect of tax information exchange mechanisms, undermining their effectiveness to curb tax evasion. The third essay demonstrates that aid capture can prevent resources from being spent on their intended use, rendering foreign assistance less effective.

    <title language="eng">Consumer responses to automated mobility offerings</title>
    <abstract language="eng">The overall aim of this cumulative dissertation is to contribute to a better understanding of both antecedents of the usage of automated mobility offerings and outcomes that individual consumers experience from such usage. The dissertation contains three distinct papers:&#13;
&#13;
Paper 1: Janotta, F. (2022), “Making emergent technologies more tangible - Effects of presentation form on user perceptions in the context of automated mobility”&#13;
&#13;
Paper 2: Janotta, F. &amp; Hogreve, J. (2022), “Ready for take-off? The dual role of affective and cognitive evaluations in the adoption of Urban Air Mobility services” &#13;
&#13;
Paper 3: Janotta, F.; Hogreve, J.; Gustafsson, A. &amp; Lervik-Olsen, L. (2022), “Will automated mobility contribute to consumer well-being? The role of mindfulness interventions in the context of automated driving”&#13;
&#13;
Each paper addresses a specific prevailing research gap in the literature related to automated mobility offerings, focusing on different use cases of automated mobility. Paper 1 investigates the effects of different presentation forms of automated driving on consumers’ perceptions, thereby addressing the challenge of effectively visualizing emergent automated technologies and making them more tangible to respondents in the context of empirical research, thus providing a methodological basis for the further investigation. Paper 2 investigates antecedents of consumers’ adoption intentions of autonomous passenger drones, specifically focusing on the dual role of affective and cognitive considerations in the formation of usage intentions. Paper 3 investigates outcomes of consumers’ usage of automated mobility offerings, focusing on the use case of automated driving and its effects on individual well-being of consumers.
    <abstract language="deu">Das übergeordnete Ziel dieser kumulativen Dissertation ist es, zu einem besseren Verständnis sowohl der Einflussfaktoren beizutragen, die eine Nutzung von automatisierten Mobilitätsangeboten begünstigen sowie mögliche Folgen aufzuzeigen, die sich aus einer Nutzung solcher Angebote für den einzelnen Konsumenten ergeben können. Die Dissertation umfasst drei Artikel:&#13;
&#13;
Beitrag 1: Janotta, F. (2022), “Making emergent technologies more tangible - Effects of presentation form on user perceptions in the context of automated mobility”&#13;
&#13;
Beitrag 2: Janotta, F. &amp; Hogreve, J. (2022), “Ready for take-off? The dual role of affective and cognitive evaluations in the adoption of Urban Air Mobility services” &#13;
&#13;
Beitrag 3: Janotta, F.; Hogreve, J.; Gustafsson, A. &amp; Lervik-Olsen, L. (2022), “Will automated mobility contribute to consumer well-being? The role of mindfulness interventions in the context of automated driving”&#13;
&#13;

    <title language="eng">Trading in the shadows</title>
    <abstract language="eng">1. Credit supply externalities of a secondary loan market&#13;
We analyze the primary and secondary market for leveraged loans over the period from January 2010 to January 2020. Our findings indicate a trading channel of credit supply contraction. Nonbank lenders that are active loan traders decrease their credit supply relative to banks when the secondary market becomes cheap and expected profitability of loan trading increases. Direct evidence from collateralized loan obligations, the largest nonbank lenders, is consistent with the interpretation that credit is crowded out by nonbanks responding to profitable opportunities in the secondary loan market, rather than with a demand-based interpretation. The results suggest that the existence of a secondary loan market might have negative spillovers to the real economy, a possibility overlooked thus far.&#13;

2. Do investors care about climate change risk – even if nobody looks? Evidence from the private market&#13;
This paper contributes to the discussion about the regulation of private markets by taking climate change into the equation. It aims at filtering out factors of public awareness and regulation to see how investors behave on private markets, where “nobody looks”. We analyze changes in leveraged loan index prices and trades that can be associated with changes in climate risk awareness during the Paris Agreement and the French Energy Transition Law in 2015. CLOs, the largest players on the leveraged loan market and barely regulated or publicly observed institutional investors, do care about climate risks – just not the way climate activists would hope for: They further invest in brown firms and even increase their inventory when the overall prices of these decline as a response to the Paris Agreement. The effect reverses in face of more concrete regulatory threats of the French Energy Transition Law.&#13;

3. Value and momentum in private debt: Trading strategies for leveraged loans&#13;
This paper applies empirical asset pricing literature on the leveraged loan market by analyzing short-term (one-month) value and momentum strategies. We apply portfolio sorts on aggregate industry and country excess returns for four different panels in the US and Europe with almost seventy years of combined data. This novel approach of aggregating leveraged loans ensures tradability as investors can choose from available facilities within an industry or country portfolio. Sorting countries into terciles of HIGH, MEDIUM, and LOW according to value and momentum results in annualized credit excess returns of long HIGH-value portfolios from 548 bps to 1,040 bps; and long HIGH-momentum returns from 429 bps to 1,358 bps. Annualized Sharpe ratios span 0.93 to 1.45 and 1.11 to 1.64, respectively. These profits are neither compensation for default risk nor liquidity provision.

    <title language="eng">Demystifying pairs trading</title>
This thesis contributes to the literature on algorithm-based hedge fund strategies with new insights into pairs trading to further demystify the rule-based trading strategy. Thereby, I closely follow the popular trading approach of Gatev, Goetzmann, and Rouwenhorst (2006). After introducing the methodology, the return calculation, and previous academic work, three research questions are investigated to extend the current knowledge of researchers and practitioners about the trading strategy.
